Digital frequency converter

Hi,
I have an rotation table which is equipped with an encoder. The encoder is sending about 737 pulses each time the rotation table does one complete turn. If the rotation frequency is, let say, 10 turns/second the encoder will by sending pulses at a frequency of 7370Hz. I need a way to convert this pulse train by another pulse train at lower frequency. For the example at hand here I would like to divide the pulse train frequency by a factor of 7.37.
Also, the rotation frequency may change in realtime but the conversion factor (7.37) will remain the same.
Is there an easy way to do this? I currently have a PCI-6601board, how could I use it for this application?
Thanks

I don't know a simple way to do exactly what you describe with hardware.  Here are a couple things you *can* do using 1 or 2 counters (most multifunction boards have 2).  Not exactly what you're after, but maybe one or the other will work good enough?
1. You can use 1 counter to divide down a TTL signal by any integer >= 4.  You would define your pulse train using units of "Ticks" and then specify the integer #'s of ticks for high time and low time.  (The minimum allowed value of ticks is 2.)  You would also have to specify the external encoder signal as the counter's "timebase source" signal.
2. You can achieve nearly any fractional division factor by using 2 counters.  One will measure the incoming encoder freq, the other will generate an output that is some arbitrary fraction of the other.  However, the output won't change instantaneously with the input, nor can it be expected to track every nuance of the input variation.  You have to perform software calls to sample, then calculate, and finally update the output freq.  Note that the output pulse train can have its freq changed on-the-fly without stopping.
Another tip for option #2:  measure your input frequency with continuous sampling.  Then you can setup DAQmx Read properties to request that you read the most recent N samples.  That way each time you request data, the call will return immediately with the freshest available data.  You can then do any needed filtering or averaging on these samples to determine the most representative input freq.
Don't have time to explain all details of terminology above.  Search the forums and you'll probably find quite a bit of help.  You can include my signature ("Kevin P") in the search because I've been involved in past threads using many of these terms such as "timebase source", "units of Ticks", "on the fly", "most recent samples".

and a digital video converter -
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php
i don’t want to mirror my ibooks monitor, but create an enlarged preview screen in fce
    can my ibook do this?
i also have another problem. The Canopus converter uses firewire, and i only have one firewire port.
To add, i want to upgrade from a usb2 external hard drive to a firewire! just because i've recently read that it will work better as a scratch disk.
i seem to have too many devises and not enough ports.

    About the first question:
    - the Apple Video Adapter allows to use an external TV screen in place of your iBook screen. I have it but never use it since my video (iMac 20") is far better than a TV screen.
    - a Digital Video Converter, instead, converts DV video into analog video and viceversa. In your case you could plug the DV end (firewire) to your iBook and the analog end to a TV set, and use it to "Print to Video" the Canvas of FCE during editing or previewing.
The main difference is that in the 1st case all you do on the iBook appears in the TV screen, in the 2nd case only the canvas output of FCE (or iMovie if needed).
To edit video use the 2nd solution only; this has the advantage to show in real time, during editing, exactly the final result of your movie (colors, interlacing problems, etc.).
You might have another option: most digital camcorders include a video converter and can be used in place of a stand alone Video Converter; if your digital camcorder allows it, use it in place of the Video Converter.
About your second question, if you switch to a firewire external drive you should be able to daisy chain your camcorder (or digital video converter) to the external drive, so the single firewire port on the iBook should be enough. Just be careful, I know some combinations of camcorders/hard drives don't work well together when daisy chained... Not my direct experience, but I read it in these discussions.

  • Digital frequency measurement

    Hi,
I'd like to measure the frequency of a digital input signal with my PXIe-6358.
I have found examples and codes like  Help » Find Exampels » Hardware Input and Output » DAQmx » Counter Measurements » Digital Frequency » Meas Dig Frequency-Low Freq 1 Ctr.vi
    and
    http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-6271
however the problem is that this digital signal connects to one of the pins of the port0.
Is there an efficient way to measure the signal frequency directly from port0?
    Thanks.

    Hi Krivan
Port zero is a digital input output.
To mesure input frequency using digital input
lines. There is an example on haw to do this using two counters in DAQmx.
You will also have to define the port as input as
well this can be done in MAX in the test panel tab.

  • Audio Digital Analog Converter bit resolution

Hello ! i´m looking if I can use IPHONE to make my investigation project. Someone of you know which is the audio Digital Analog Converter bit resolution for a normal audio conversation? 13bits? thank you very much

MonoPrice.com has a digital to analog converter for around $25 although it looks like it is on back order. I would give them a call anyways. Don't get fooled by their prices, they are fast and cheap but good and the place to buy all your audio and video cables. I wired up my sisters entire home theater for less than a quarter of what I payed for my first HDMI cable which I didn't pay much for either.

  • Digital Frequency Measurement for cRIO

    Hi,
I'm new to LabView, and I'm having problems setting up a VI for frequency measurement. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Task: I am using a cRIO with a digital I/O module (NI 9403). My goal is to connect the sensor that I am using (a MAXIM 6576 temperature sensor with period/frequency output in the form of a square wave) to the cRIO and have a VI measure and output its current frequency or period.
I've tried working with the Count and Period.vi, but when I tried to compile I found out the 9403 module does not support SCTL. I also looked at a thread that was posted in 2009 (http://forums.ni.com/t5/Counter-Timer/beginner-stuff-cRIO-digital-frequency-measurement/td-p/826656/... that discussed a similar problem, but when I tried using the Host VI I got the multiple error messages saying "Function not supported in current target". This happened even when I tried using the original Count and Period (Host).vi with no modifications (but the original Count and Period (FPGA).vi works just fine).
I don't know how to approach this problem - should I be using FPGA or Scan Interface mode? Are there any basic examples of frequency measurement or digital counters that do not involve NI data acquisition devices? For a basic counter, how would you set up the VI so that it could measure the period or frequency based on the counter values?
Thanks a lot for your help!
    Andrea

    Hello,
A great place to get started when using a cRIO is the NI CompactRIO Developer's Guide.  It will explain both Scan Mode and FPGA.  The difference between them comes down to the functionality and what you would like to complete in the program.  The simpler of the two is Scan Mode but you have more functionality with FPGA.
We offer a lot of good examples in our NI Example Finder by going to Help >> Find Examples.  In here you can narrow the examples by hardware or just browse to different categories.  We do have a counter example that will work with the NI 9403 you can get to the example by going to Hardware Input and Output >> NI Scan Engine >> Module Specific >> Digital Input >> “Digital Line Input – cRIO.lvproj.”

  • PCI-6280 (M-series) digital frequency measurement

    Hello,
I am trying to use a PCI-6280 board with NI-DAQmx and C++ to measure the frequency of an approximately 36kHz external digital clock source.
I have been playing with the "Dig Freq-Low Freq 1 Ctr" example in the NI-DAQmx ANSI C examples directory, trying to get it to work. All I have gotten so far is error -200474 -- "Specified operation did not complete, because the specified timeout expired" -- in response to the call to the DAQmxReadCounterScalarF64() function.
I think I am connecting the external clock source to the wrong input terminal.
I am connecting the external clock source to pin 37, which the documentation says is the Ctr0 source terminal. I have also tried the other Ctr0 terminals (gate, aux, and out) and no luck.
What am I doing wrong? Where should I connect the input signal so I can successfully measure the digital frequency?
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks,
    Markus Svilans.

    Hi Markus,
In order to measure frequency you need to connect your signal to the GATE of the counter (in your case this is pin 3). All counters use the Gate to take time measurements (for example period and frequency). Here is a good resource on this.
    Hope this helps!

  • Adobe Digital Negative Converter

I talked with someone a couple months ago about what I could download to be able to open up RAW images onto my Lightroom 3. I need a converter
Everything worked, but now I am trying to do the same thing to another "user" on my laptop and am having an awful time trying to find the right one that is compatible for my computer. I tried downloading the exact same one (Adobe Digital Negative Converter 7.1) that I am using for my account on my laptop, but it won't let me.
    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!
Also, Adobe must hate me because it logs me out of my account like every five minutes.
I have a Windows and my camera is a Canon Rebel t3 and t3i.
    PLEASE HELP ME!

    Hi,
Typically you just use the latest version of the DNG converter ... have a look at this Julieanne Kost video about DNG and using the converter. When Do I Convert  RAW files to DNG? « Julieanne Kost's Blog
For installation I guess that you just need to install one copy using the Admin account as that will mean all users can access it.
BTW Rebel t3 and t3i were supported in Lightroom v.3.4.1 you can download that version (or preferably v3.6) from Adobe - Lightroom : For Windows

  • Import from digital video converter

I am new to Mac and very new to iMovie.
I have a mac Mini with OSX 10.4.11 and am using a DAC 200 Digital video converter to import video from a VCR (converting old tapes of the family) via Firewire.
I turned on the Video converter and the camera import window opened automatically. I recorded the tape (about 2 hours) and clicked DONE at the end of the tape. iMovie then automatically generated thumbnails. This took about 45 minutes. When done, the imported video was only 42 seconds long. I repeated the process and the resulting video was only 1.9 seconds.
What did I do wrong? I looked at all the settings and nowhere did i find something which seemed to be responsible for limiting the video length. How do I get the full video?
and how do I prevent the automatic thumbnail generation?
    Many thanks
    Mark

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Firstly I don't know anything about your converter, but wonder if it comes with any software or gives any indications of what format it converts the analogue to. It seems rather strange that it would take 45 minutes to create thumbnails for 42 seconds of video, take a look at your events folder (by default its in home/movies) and look for the actual imported files, check to see if they are really only 42 seconds long.
imovie 08 is a very new product and can be a little quirky, ensure you are following instructions for your converter and pay particular attention to doing things in the right order.
If you continue to have problems you could try capturing your video in imovie 6 or in QT pro.

  • Measuring digital frequency

    Dear,
I am working on a test stand that will be used for fatigue tests for a suspension, chassis etc. De vehicle components will be charged by hydraulic cylinders. These hydraulic cylinders are controlled by an AO and DO module (NI9263 & NI9401). Feedback is given by load cells. These load cells are connected with AI module (NI9201). When a cylinder reaches a certain force (certain amplitude load cell NI9201) the cylinders stops pulling and will make an outward movement. This signal is 0 when outgoing and 1 when certain force is reached. A green led starts to burn (signal is 1) when the force is reached. Now I want to count the amount of times that the signal is 1 so that I can make a security system that will limit the amount of ingoing and outgoing movements of the cylinders. Can you help me?
    Kind regards,

    Dear,
I am still unable to count the digital frequency. The signal from the load cells (0 or 1) can not be added to the digital frequency block diagram that was sented by Bas van Dijke. Which wires do I have to connect? I also have tried to manipulate the signal from the load cell, but this didn't work either. Can you look at the attached VI?

  • No Bluray Audio ....BluRay HDMI'd to TV, TV audio to Digital/Analog converter: No audio to receiver

I have a new Sony BluRay connected to a Toshiba 32C11OU TV via HDMI.
Have TV audio going out through digital audio out (optical) > digital/audio converter (RCA) > to stereo receiver to play on sound system.

  • Best Analog-to-Digital Video Converter?

What's the best and most inexpensive analog to DV converter for importing video from a VCR onto my eMac?
I'm using iMovie 4 if that makes any difference...

    Faedo,
    Cheapest ways:
    1. Do you have a DV camera? If you do and it has "digital in" then you can take the output from your VHS player, route it through the camera and into your PC. The manual would explain if it is a feature.
    2. Secondly, search ebay for Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge. This is a hardware converter that takes the analogue and does the conversion for you.
    Good luck.
