Direction of mouse wheel rotation

I can not figure out which direction the mouse wheel has rotated from a "MouseWheelEvent" object,
towards or away from the user? I have used JSE1.4.
can anyone help? thanks!

thanks a lot for the quick answer, indeed this is documented in the method detail of "getWheelRotation()" in JSE1.4 API doc, I should look API documentation much more thoroughly, some basic mistake from me, sorry!
Best regards

  • Can decouple the scrolling direction for trackpad and mouse wheel?

    Hi,
When you set the trackpad to scroll inversely using the "moving the frame" methophor, the mouse wheel behaves the same. But if you go to the mouse setting to set the wheel to scroll according to the direction of the finger, it affects the trackpad settings too... Can these two be decoupled?

Apple does not normally read these forums.  You can tell Apple your thoughts:

The scrolling thing is not a "bug" so you'll want to get as many people to complain so that Apple includes an option in a future update.

  • Scrolling/mouse wheel improvments (VTE-like) in urxvt

I like urxvt a lot, but there's one little thing that always annoyed me, especially since I used to use XFCE's terminal which, like (I assume) all VTE-based terminals, behaves differently.
Like pretty much all other emulators, urxvt supports using the mouse wheel to scroll in the terminal's buffer; But, unlike some others, that is all it does.
Other (VTE-based) terminals, when running an application that uses the "secondary screen"(*), will disable their scrollbar, and instead you can use the wheel to interact with said application. For example, when in `less` or `man` you can scroll around using the mouse wheel. And it's a really nice thing, because it feels very natural (to me, at least).
(*) not sure whether this is the "official" term or not, but at least that's how it's called in urxvt.
And it is the one thing that always annoyed me about urxvt: even in such applications, the mouse wheel will simply scroll through urxvt's own buffer. So I finally decided to grab the source code and have a look, and lucky enough it turned out to be pretty easy to change things.
Introducing a new option: secondaryWheel (ssw)
Yeah, that name might not be the best, but it goes along side secondaryScreen (ssc) - which is obviously required for this to work at all - as well as secondaryScroll (ssr) - with which, IMHO, it is somewhat related. So, there you go.
What this new option does, is pretty simple: when using the mouse wheel, if you're on secondary screen then no scrolling will occur, and instead some (3, to be exact) "fake" keystrokes will be sent to the running application. So, a wheel up will have the same result as pressing the Up key three times, and wheel down will do the same as pressing 3 times the Down key.
Easy enough, but that does the trick: now when running `man`, `less` or any other application that uses the secondary screen, you can use the mouse wheel to move around (or whatever said application would do, if you pressed the Up/Down keys). It should be noted that I'm not sure this is actually how things are done in VTE-based terminals - I never checked - but this does the job, so it works for me.
This is just another option (disabled by default), so you can either use it from command-line (ssw), or specify it in your .Xdefaults using it's long-name: secondaryWheel
Like I mentioned earlier, I believe this option is related to secondaryScroll, as in it works best if you disable it, while enabling secondaryWheel
That way, not only can you use your mouse wheel to scroll around in those applications, but whatever you do here will not "mess up" your scrolling buffer (on primary screen). That's how I use it, and I really like it that way.
    Less blah, more download
The modified source code is available on this BitBucket repository. Note that it not only features this patch, but also this great one from rlblaster.
Or, you can also simply use this PKGBUILD.
Note: The PKGBUILD includes both patches, and also uses different compilation options (than the official package) to disable utmp/wtmp support and tabbed support. This is mainly because I don't use those, plus I beleive that utmp/wtmp doesn't actually work anyway (it would require setuid to be set, which isn't the case in the official package. Though, I did include the required lines (commented out) in the PKGBUILD; should you want to use it, you can simply uncomment them, and don't forget to change the options as well).
And of course bug reports, suggestions or any other form of constructive criticism is very much welcome.

Sorry for the necro-bump, but I found this thread while troubleshooting an issue with scrolling in urxvt.
This is the precise patch I was looking for, but the link to PKGBUILD in the OP's post is broken.
Here is the direct link to the AUR package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rxvt … -scrolling
Also this patch is great. I moved over from Gentoo who includes this patch in the rxvt-unicode ebuild so I never really knew about it.
Moving to Arch caused some frustration as this patch wasn't included and I had no idea what was wrong.
Anyway, this package is great and I hope it's maintained forever and ever (or for as long as I use urxvt).

  • Mouse wheel stops scrolling page, and sometimes refresh does not refresh the correct tab, but the first one in the window.

I have 27 firefox windows open with a grand total of 141 tabs.
Some times the input is directed to the wrong window. I will click refresh and it will refresh the first tab in a window, but not the tab I am on. Apparently this also happens when I try and use the mouse wheel or the up and down arrow to scroll a page.
Some times it works correctly on 1 window, but when I switch to another scrolling stops working.
Usually rebooting the computer helps, but I should not have to do that.

  • Duplicate Pannning With Mouse Wheel Down + Mouse Move to Pan Vision Image

I am trying to duplicate an image panning operation using the middle mouse scroll wheel depressed while moving the mouse.
Code is pretty simple, but pan occurs in opposite direction of normal pan and opposite to direction of mouse.  I have tried a number of options to try to reverse this but none successful.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks for looking.

    Hello!
From testing the code, it behaves as I would expect? The default behavior for pan is to sort of "drag" the image to you. If you want the opposite behavior, you could manipulate the output of Last Mouse Position.

  • Mouse wheel is erratic

    Hi,
I am having more and more difficulty with the mouse wheel on Mac OS X 10.7. When I try to use it for scrolling in Firefox, nothing happens. After a few attempts, Firefox starts scrolling in the wrong direction, then after a few seconds, scrolling direction comes back to normal. Sometimes, scrolling with the wheel stops altogether, mainly in the Finder, sometimes in Firefox. I am using an external Razer Taipan mouse. I just cannot use the trackpad, as I run the Mac with the display lid closed to use my external monitor in full 1080p resolution. Will I really have to purchase a 70$ external trackpad from Apple to use this machine? This is a real nonsense as trackpad are harder to use for me and that device would be just for this dumb Mac. I have a Dell touch screen: Mac OS X doesn't recognize it as well. It seems that no mater what I will try, it will NEVER work! Any idea?

I'm experiencing the same mouse behavior on my iMac with a wireless and wired mouse.  With all of the events closed in the Photo mode there is no scrolling in either direction. Event the double arrows at either end of the window don't work. I can drag the scroll bar down and up with the mouse.
However, I found if I opened all of the events (Option-click on one event triangle) and then closed them all I can scroll down slowly as one would expect and the scroll arrows worked.  But the upward scroll is all the way to the top in one fell swoop.
If I close iPhoto and reopen the scrolling is broken until I open and close all of the Events in the Photo mode.
Send a bug report to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Scrolling mouse wheel

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to make a movieclip scroll with the
mouse wheel with a slowdown (makes the movie clip look like its
slowing down) function so that with one scroll of the wheel the
movie clip will move down then slow down and with another scroll it
will go down further etc...? I can get the scroll wheel working
with the slowdown function but what im finding is flash wont
recognise the mouse wheel after one 'turn' of the mouse wheel. In
other words i can scroll once and no more.
I have attached the code. The code is all on one frame in the
_root timeline and 'panel' is the movieclip to be scrolled...
    Any help would be great....

thanks _name for your help, although i didnt have any luck
with doing it that way. I have made a bit of progress though, i can
get the mouse to scroll the movieclip (panel) in one direction with
a friction function attached so once scrolled it goes from faster
to slow to stop, the main problem is i cant get it to do the same
thing when scrolled in the opposite direction (i have put a
function in there to act as a 'stopper' to stop the scroll. Anyone
    have any ideas about this?
    cheers for any advice offered...

  • Combo Box Indicator: mouse wheel bug or feature?

Both ring indicator and slide indicator works fine even when the mouse wheel property is enabled.
But user can change value of the Combo Box indicator at runtime.
Shouldn't it be disabled, by default, just like for the keyboard?  After all, it's an indicator.
I know I can disable the mouse wheel feature.  It should be disable by default.
Or is there any use of this feature?

    Mouse Wheel bug.vi ‏12 KB

I think what you are seeing is a minor bug introduced by the lack of a "Combo Box Indicator" on the palattes.  You must drop a control then change direction and there appears to be no built in mouse support property written on direction change leaving you with the default mouse wheel support for a control.  Since this is a "windows only" property there might not be an easy way to write the property on direction change without querying App.OS target.  And then what do you do on targets that do not have support for the property?  Change the behavior?  THAT would confuse just about everyone who works with multiple OS's
    The work arounds:
Use the key navigation page and pay attention to mouse wheel support for indicators
Add your own combo box indicator to the controls palatte with the right mouse wheel support
Write a VI Analizer test for "Indicator with mouse wheel support"
In Short;  this seems like one more thing that can easily trip up a developer.  A VI Analizer test for this could help save us from ourselves.  Consider uploading yours to the VIA Enthusiasts group

  • Mouse wheel value update

    Hello everyone
I am trying to get the value from "mouse scroll" changed by mouse wheel. The attached code is very simple and seems to be right wired, but it's not working properly. If you run the VI and scroll up and down  mouse wheel, you will see that sometimes the value is updated on the indicator, sometimes don't. If you keep using the mouse wheel always on the same direction (i.e. up), the value on the indicator starts to increase but not after every single roll of the mouse wheel. Seems like a lack of sync between the while loop execution and the mouse wheel usage.
Any ideas how to trigger the loop just after mouse wheel usage? I have to sync them.
    Thanks

Mouse Wheel Value Update.vi ‏10 KB

    Mike
I got your Vis and did some modifications to adjust them to my code and everything is working like a charm. But I would like to understand what's going wrong with my code (the one that I attached on the first message of this thread). I did a very very very simple code that was supposed to do the jog, but it is not working. As I roll the mouse wheel the value on the indicator does not update in sync with the mouse wheel (sometimes it updates, sometimes don't). If I have my code working I can put it inside an event structure on the timeout case and use:
Mouser Enter array - feed timeout with 10ms
Mouse Leave array - feed timeout with -1ms
    Anyway, thanks for your code.
Please, help me to understand what's wrong with mine.
Aested, my VI works on my computer too, but the value on the indicator does not update in sync with all movements of mouse wheel.
    Thanks

  • My mouse wheel went crazy.

I was using fluxbox and firefox, then I installed gnome yesterday.  Now my mouse wheel "jumps up and down" when I try to scroll webpages.  It even does it if I am using fluxbox.  Or using the rox filemanager.
My /etc/X11/XF86Config hasn't changed since the 4-4-2004, and of course has the lines:
        Option "Protocol"    "IMPS/2"
        Option "Device"      "/dev/psaux"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
It is "active", it just jumps back the opposite direction I scroll in.  I can't scroll webpages, just makes them jump up and down.
Any ideas whats going on with my mouse?  It's a Kensington USB optical mouse.  The only thing I can think of is that installing Gnome and all its little pieces screwed something up.

whol wrote:It's a Kensington USB optical mouse...
I have a USB optical mouse as well.  Change your "Device" option and "Protocol" option.  The entry you should have is:
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse0"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/usbmouse"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
    EndSection
I think you just had some bad combinations of settings.  "/dev/usbmouse" is just a symlink to "/dev/input/mice", but make sure you are using the "ImPS/2" protocol as well.  My scroll works in every application.  Hope that helps.

  • 2.1 bug: navigation snapback using mouse wheel in Library

Running 2.1 under WinXP, I get this behavior intermittently:
When using the mouse wheel to advance from one image to the next in the Library module, the focus will snap backwards from the currently selected image to some previous image. It will not snap back to the immediately previous image, but to an image 2 or 3 positions earlier.
When this behavior appears, it persists, even after closing and restarting LR ... and most recently even after rebooting WinXP.

Could be a mouse driver thing, a LR thing, an OS thing.
For more direct control that doesn't slip, use arrow keys.

  • Logitech mouse wheel stopped working

    Hello,
I had this mouse for a long time. It's a Logitech Cordless Optical mouse connected to a Linksys KVM (I share with 4 different computers). Last week the mouse scroll wheel stooped working. I tried another Logitech mouse (G9) to directly to the USB of my Mac and the mouse wheel scrolls fine.
Now the problem's the old mouse wheel works fine on my other computers. I tried turning the KVM off, resetting the IR unit, and of course rebooting my mac. Nothing worked. The odd thing is, if I connect the old mouse directly to the Mac, it works OK.
I really hate the G9. I'd rather stick with my current mouse, but I need the scroll wheel. Any ideas?

Your profile lists one of the computers as "Hackintosh." Because OS X is licensed for use only with Apple branded computers & the Discussions Terms of Use prohibit discussing illegal uses of software, & equally importantly because we have no idea of how running a hacked version of OS X on non-Apple hardware might be a part of your problem, we cannot help you.
    Sorry.

  • Mouse wheel stop working after upgrade

Hi. After upgrading my Leopard to 10.5.8 the mouse wheel stop scrolling window content, like web pages. I'd open the mouse control panel and there is a zooming feauture. It's working like this: moving wheel back makes a fast zoom, and moving ahead makes a slow zoom. Both directions make more zoom (slow and fast) and there is no going back but deactivating before desktop reach my nose.
So I beleive the system is getting wrong the resources of my mouse. Where can I setup this?
Oh, it's a Microsoft Wireless mouse.

Yes! I'd install the software pack of the mouse for Mac OS X that adds a control panel at Sistem Preferences and I take control - and the wheel came back!
But it's not easy finding it in Microsoft.com (in my case: .br). You got to start by hardware products and follow support links, system, etc..

Often I close tabs using middle mouse button which is also the wheel. When I point cursor on the tabs, wheel accidently rotates and I close wrong page tab.

You can't disable the tab scrolling with the mouse wheel AFAIK, so you need to use other means to close the tab.<br />
You can close the current tab with the close X on the tab or one close X at the end of the tab bar or use the keyboard with Ctrl+W.<br />
Not selected tabs can only be closed via the right-click context menu as an alternative.
Otherwise you can try to set the minimum width of a tab to a larger value to have more room with the scrolling.
