Directory/file ownership problem - restore Arch defaults?

A recent screw-up while changing from ext3 to reiser left everything on my system owned by tomk:users. (Clever me - if anyone needs a HOWNOTTO on this, I'll be glad to provide the embarrassing details  :oops: ) Anyway, I chown'ed everything except $HOME to root:root, and it all seems to be running fine. However, I am of course aware that there are various other users and groups on the system, presumably for good reason. Where can I find out what should be owned by these users/groups? I reckon leaving everything root:root is probably not a good idea, right?

Thanks bardo (and cactus in the other thread). I ended up using cactus' suggestion, but in three stages, to solve the local package issue. First
pacman -Q | cut -f1 -d " " | tr "n" " " > install.list
then edit my own package names out of install.list, then
pacman -Sy `cat install.list`
Clunkier, certainly, but I felt happier that way - and that's what it's all about, isn't it?

  • Glibc update refusing to proceed. File ownership problem

    So, I'm attempting to update glibc, and everything has been cleared out of /lib except the glibc libraries. According to "find /lib -exec pacman -Qo -- {} +" everything inside /lib is owned by glibc, but /lib is unowned. When I attempt to update, I receive the error: "glibc: /lib exists in filesystem"
    How can I fix this?

    So I read the wiki about the upgrade with /lib and glibc conflicting and I ran into such confliction during the second step.
    pacman -Su
    After running the first command listed, I get back:

  • Netatalk, samba + osx file ownership problem

    I am having a few problems with file permissions.
    We a file server serving nfs v4 - and an ubuntu server which mounts it that runs netatalk v3.0.1
    Seems that when a file is created via a NFS client, then modified by the
    afp server, the perms go a bit screwy.
    for example....
    fred creates test.doc in the 'store' share, on a client with nfs it has these permissions
    -rw-rw----   1 fred     testgroup       12 Dec 12 11:30 test.doc
    When John edits it with a mac mounted via afp or smb it changes it to:
    -rw-rw----   1 john    testgroup      12 Dec 12 11:32 test.doc
    So test.doc when modified by a client with an afp or smb mount now belongs to john

  • File permission and ownership problem

    I am trying to resolve some file permission and ownership problems that are left over from using Migration Assistant to set up my iMac from an older iMac. In a terminal session when I use the ls -l command I'm getting a file/directory owner of 504. Sometimes the group is admin and sometimes the group is also 504. I think this is because the owner of the file on the old computer is not present in the new one but I want to be sure before I just change the owner and group.

    The following should give you an indication->
    id -un 504
    or you could try->
    dscl . list /Users UniqueID | grep 504  && echo "User exists" || echo "User does not exist"

    Open Disk Utility. Click once on the external drive left-most icon (not the indented volume name/icon); what does it indicate for Partition Map Scheme? Also, do you have an Intel Mac or a PPC Mac?
    Now click "Verify Disk" and see if it finds errors or if it reports "ok."
    What I am hoping (this is something of a long shot) is that there will be errors found on the disk that Disk Utility can repair and then your data will be properly associated with the file names and headers. "Verify" simply reports back on the state of the file system and can do no harm; only when you click on "Repair" will it actually try to repair anything. You might want to report back first on the results of "Verify" before trying to "repair."
    By the way, this Verify (or Repair) procedure can take ~ hours for a large disk that is mostly full. I did this recently on an external Time Machine drive that was 1.5 TB in size and 2/3 full and it took ~ 3 hours.
    If severe errors are found on that disk, something stronger than Apple's Disk Utility might be called for, such as Disk Warrior. Hence better to report back here before roceeding with any "repairs."
    The type of error I am hoping you might have is in the file system that relates the filenames and their header (and file sizes) to the locations around the disk where the actual data inside the file are located. If that file system gets damaged, your computer will have trouble finding the actual data that goes with each file. Hence getting zeros when you should have gotten data. Sometimes this can be fixed, sometimes it cannot. Often it can. If the problem is caused by a physical problem with the disk, the likelihood of recovery is low. If the problem is with the file system/mapping to the data on the drive, it very well might be fixable.
    Have you had any power failures, system freezes, improper or disorderly computer shutdowns, etc. or unexpected dismounting of the backup drive anytime since you have been using it? Have you ever gone into that external backup drive in the finder and changed any of the files on it yourself, or has it only been touched indirectly through Time Machine?

    Is anyone having the same type of problems I'm having with Lion. I have a new MacBook Pro, received 7 weeks ago, preinstalled with Leopard 10.6.7. I didn't migrate anything from my old iMac, wanted a clean install from the Apple Store. While there, I asked for the upgrade to Lion 10.7, however their system was down.
    I  installed it myself, wirelessly about a week later, and Apple emailed me a receipt. Now, I've had to call support directly last week when I lost Mail, Address Book, was unable to open Preview or iTunes, among other problems. Seemed fixed after a session that baffled even the store tech.  Now I am unable to download or install the recent Mac updates for Lion, from the App Store, could not install Adobe Reader, etc. Messages range from 'A network error has occured - Check your Internet connection and try again' to 'The Installer is damaged and cannot open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions.'  All fail and I'll probably have to call Apple again. I am frustrated beyond words.  Logs 'Install's runner tool is not properly configured as a setuid tool', domain errors, 'attempt to write a readonly database, and on and on. I have barely done a thing on this computer except search online for help with these problems. Safari gives me a 'You are not connected to the internet' too often. Diagnostics disagrees. I do see wi-fi problems in the forum. Disk and permissions were fine at the beginning of the earlier problems, checked first by support tech. I'm not sure if support tech even knew. I was just happy they were fixed. Anyone have these download and/or install problems after a 'clean bill of health' so to speak, only a week ago?

  • Problem Restoring a File

    When I tried to restore a file, part of the folders would be restored fine, but then I got this message:
    "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “Research”."
    (Note: "Research" is the name of the file I was restoring).
    What can I do to fix this?
    Jan

    Well, it's been a while, but maybe anyone can still use the solution to your problem:
    The reason for the error message is that the Disk Utility needs to checksum scan the source in order to restore it on a medium like a USB stick. It can do that only if the source image is mounted read/write. Unfortunately, some images are read-only, and although there is an option to convert the images, a read-only image cannot be converted to a read/write image.
    The solution is to make a new image, copy the contents of your original image there with "cp -a <source> <target>", and then you can use that new image to restore to the usb key.
    Aaaand done...

I've installed open-vm-tools from the repository, created the /etc/arch-release file and appended the daemon open-vm-tools to rc.conf as mentioned in the wiki. But every time I open the virtual machine I'm greeted with the warning:
    The VMware Tools resume script did not run successfully in this virtual machine.
    If you have configured a custom resume script in this virtual machine, make sure that it contains no errors.
    You can also submit a support request to report this issue.
    I don't even know where the resume script is and I'm pretty sure I haven't customized it. But as the machine boots correctly, I tried continuing and sharing a folder with the host.
    I've set to share my Windows desktop in VMware player, set as "Always enabled" and with name "desktop". I tried mounting this folder adding the following line in /etc/fstab:
    .host:/desktop /home/boppreh/desktop vmhgfs defaults 0 0
    and the following commands
    mount -t vmhgfs .host:/desktop ~/desktop
    and
    mount -t -v -o rw .host:/desktop ~/desktop
    Those two commands print the message "Could not add entry to mtab, continuing".
    All of them result in the same weird behavior: whenever I try to access the ~/desktop directory, I get kicked out back to Arch's login screen. I tried piping the output of those commands to a file, so I could see the error, but it never writes anything. It happens when I cd to the directory, or a simple ls.
    So what's going on here? Is there any problem with the default resume script? Maybe open-vm-tools requires some kind of graphical access but didn't bother to tell? Did I do something wrong or forgot any step?

    Solved the problem with the "resume script did not run successfully" warning by using the systemd specific configuration: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … systemd%29
    The shared folders still kick me out, though, even after following the Shared Folders instructions in the wiki for systemd. When running the mount command the folder is added correctly to /etc/mtab, even though the "Could not add entry to mtab, continuing" warning persists. I just tried cd-ing in the mounted directory as root, and it seems to work. Running commands as "sudo" doesn't help, I have to su first and then navigate to the directory to see its contents. Changing the permission of the folder didn't help either.
    I'm thinking of just serving the files in a webserver. This is way too much work and by the number of strange problems it looks like I'm not supposed to be doing this.
    Edit: exploring the shared folder as root works, but coping the files hangs the entire machine. Yeah, I'm going with the webserer alternative for now. If anyone has experienced this problems before, please share your ideas.

  • Problem booting Arch after first install on MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
    I've spent the past month intermittently trying to install Arch on an old MacBook Pro with a broken screen running in clamshell mode (I've reformatted, clean installed OSX, and run pacstrap around 20 times now). I was originally trying to install Debian, but the Arch Wiki was so good that I switched. The issue has been the same anyway.
    Every time I try to install, I get stuck at the bootloader stage, where I need to make the installation bootable. It doesn't matter what bootloader method I use, since I've tried:
    Boot from /boot partition with GRUB
    Boot from separate HFS+ GRUB partition
    Boot from Apple EFI System Partition (ESP) with GRUB
    Boot with rEFInd
    Boot with rEFInd installed to the ESP
    Arch itself works fine, but when I go to boot from rEFInd's autodetected vmlinuz-linux from 128MiB ext2 partition, I get the same error message I've gotten with every other configuration:
    :: running early hook [udev]
    :: running hook [udev]
    :: Triggering uevents...

    [etc.]
    When the Arch .iso live CD boots, it gets the first uhci_hcd errors, and then just moves on with:
    :: hook [memdisk]
    :: hook [archiso]
    [etc.]
    Here are the contents of my refind.conf file (/boot/efi/ESP/refind/refind.conf) (I omit all the standard comments):
    timeout 0
    scan_all_linux_kernels
    [The example menu entries - all disabled]
    menuentry "Arch Linux" {
    icon /EFI/refind/icons/os_arch.icns
    "Arch Boot"
    loader /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options "root=/dev/sda7 rw rootfstype=ext4"
    And my refind_linux.conf (/boot/refind-linux.conf):
    "Boot with standard options" "ro root=2b121a89-aeb9-430a-8e6c-a05b79f08427"
    "Boot to single-user mode" "ro root=2b121a89-aeb9-430a-8e6c-a05b79f08427 single"
    "Boot with minimal options" "ro root=2b121a89-aeb9-430a-8e6c-a05b79f08427"
    My custom menu entry for Arch doesn't work either (I'm still researching exactly why). I've been quite confused by different posts all over by different people on how to configure the manual refind.conf stanzas. I also tried a direct to root menu entry, where I tried the files as /boot/vmlinuz-linux, etc.
    The error I always get here is the same:
    Starting vmlinuz-linux
    Using load options "[same as above]"
    Invalid loader file!
    Error: Not Found while loading vmlinuz-linux
    I've installed GRUB as well, just to be sure. Although I haven't moved it to any other partitions or 'blessed' it in OS X. (I have blessed the HFS+/EFI partitions when I used GRUB.)
    Just FYI, I've used the following pages as guides:
    My primary guide: Cody Littlewood's installation procedure for a MacBook Pro
    The Arch Wiki MacBook Page, which was useful but a bit confusing and self-referential on the Bootloader section
    The rEFInd website, by Rod Smith. I've read it fairly extensively (including an interesting comparison of SodaStream flavours)
    A Gentoo Wiki page with a rEFInd example
    The LFS GRUB chapter, and surrounding material
    And I've largely read the Arch Wiki Beginners' Guide, Bootloaders page, GRUB page, GRUB EFI examples page, UEFI page and EFI Stub Loader page.
    There have been others, but it's been a while since I read them. I've been trying to make this work for a while.
    I've also looked at some other posts on similar subjects:
    A post on the Arch Linux subreddit matching my (previous; with GRUB) situation, but not fixing my problem
    An Arch forum post, of which there have been others, but google seems to have changed my search results.
    EFI-Booting Ubuntu on a Mac, by Rod Smith
    The Debian MacBook Pro page
    A post about booting Debian without rEFIt
    Again, there are more, but I can't find them all just now.
    I've looked EVERYWHERE for a solution.
    My question is, does anyone have any ideas on how I might make my computer bootable?
    Almost forgot; I've run
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    successfully (I get the two driver warnings that seem to be standard).

  • Why have my system preferences all been restored to default?

    Hi,
    Yesterday my iMac was really playing up, it was writing to the disk, being really noisy and overall not responding much. So after failing to reach the Apple Menu to shut down, I just held the power button on the back of my Alu iMac until it switched off (not slept). This morning I awake, and turn my computer on, log in. Everything seems fine, but, the default Dock is shown, spaces are inactive and all my System Preferences have been restored to defaults, therefore I imagine the System Preferences file or something was corrupt when I force shut down the computer, meaning it started afresh. I have a time machine backup (hallelujah for time machine!) so I can retrieve a certain file and replace it if needs be.
    Could anyone give me instruction on how to get my System Preferences back the way I had them?
    Thanks.

    the system writes to various preference files when you quit applications or shut down normally. It does it by first deleting the old preference file and then replacing it with a new one. In the event of a crash or a hard shutdown it sometimes does the former but has no chance to do the latter. in that case that preference file is created with default values on restart.
    It sounds like you have several problems with your computer and several pref files may have been involved. You might consider restoring the whole preferences folder from the library in your home folder (not the one at the top level of the hard drive). However, this might not fix all the problems if your system was seriously misbehaving. I would do a full system restore from TM from some time point before the problems started. to do that start from the leopard install DVD and once past the language screen choose "restore from backup from the Utilities menu at the top.

  • How to find corrupted file causing problem with FCP?

    I couldn't use Log and Transfer of FCP 7.0.3 for AVCHD from Canon Vixia.
    By starting from different user account Log and Transfer worked which means I have a corrupted file in the directory of original user account causing the error of Log and Transfer. What will be the easiest way to find the corrupted file?
    Milan

    If the new user acct test allows you to work with the software, it usually means a dead pref file. The easiest way to deal with these issues is to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager software (free) to delete the preference files in FCP.
    Open it up and look under the FCP settings in the Advanced tab. It gives you the option of selectively deleteing the various pref files associated with the app.
    First back up all your FCP prefs then start deleting them one by one. Once you figure out which one is the problem, restore all the others.
