Are you running Apache?
Try checking your
Options -indexes
value.
If you have that set, try setting it to
Options All
Check this site for more info

Hope it works!

  • Apache giving a Directory index forbidden by rule: /Users/me/Music/iTune

    I am trying to configure Apache to display my iTunes folders so that I can download them to my Playstation 3. The Playstation 3 either gives me a network error, or a "Directory index forbidden by rule: /Users/me/Music/iTunes/" in Apache. The network error on the PS3 seems to occur when Bonjour (?) rewrites the system name (I have entered the IP address) to "george-smiths-computer.local", since the playstation 3 doesn't know how to find this address.
    My rules in httpd.conf seem to be OK, so the second Directory error doesn't make sense:
    Alias /iTunes/ "/Users/me/Music/iTunes/"
    <Directory "/Users/me/Music/iTunes/">
    Options +Indexes MultiViews
    AllowOverride None
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
    </Directory>
    If I put index.html in the directory apache will find and display it, but still no directory index.
    I have a workaround by copying the files to /usr/share/httpd/icons, which DOES show the index:
    <Directory "/usr/share/httpd/icons">
    Options Indexes MultiViews
    AllowOverride None
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
    </Directory>
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi--
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    I played around with Apache and came up with a couple of things to look at. I can get it to give me the Directory index forbidden by rule: /Users/me/Music/iTunes/ error in the log if I mess up the Directory block by forgetting to put a quotation mark at the head of the block:
    <Directory /Users/charlie/Music/iTunes/">
    Also, I can get Apache to show me the 403 error if I have the case wrong on a directory in the path. In other words, if I did "Me" instead of "me" (assuming the home directory really is "me", I get a 403 error. But, strangely enough, it doesn't log it in the error log. So take a real close look at your paths in that directive (I'm assuming you didn't just copy and paste them out, since "me" seems like an unlikely user name).
    The "redirect" to the Bonjour name is more likely a result of content negotiation. I'd guess you're asking for the directory without a trailing "/" character. When that happens, Apache does a redirect to the same directory, but adds the trailing "/". You should be able to get around this by always specifying the "/" in the URL. You might also want to look in the Apache Docs at both the ServerName and UseCanonicalName directives.
    For example, if you don't care about redirects always working sensibly from outside your network (i.e., the Internet), you could always set the ServerName directive to the IP address of your server inside the LAN. And you could turn off UseCanonicalName, too. That would keep it from trying to use the Bonjour name to construct URLs in situations where it does these redirects.

    P.S.--Make sure you back up your http.conf file before you do a lot of hacking at it, just in case. You can always copy in the default, but it's a hassle if you've already done some successful customization...

  • Directory index forbidden by Options directive:

    Trying to setup a secure website. The folder is located in the users folder under sites. This is what the log file says and when you go to the address you get forbidden. Completely lost and new to this.

    Hi
    I solved it. The issue was that I have server.app installed and did not realize that I must use
    /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf
    instead of
    /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
    once I made those changes everything worked as it should.

  • Apache 2 & OSX 10.5 - Stop Directory Indexing

    Hi,
    I'm running a home-based web server on 10.5 and by default directory indexing seems to be on. That is, if you hit a directory on the web server with no index page in it then Apache returns a list of the files in the directory. I'd like to turn this off but don't know how.
    I think this used to be called fancy indexing under Apache 1.2 and there was an option for this, but in my private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf file this option no longer exists. An ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Pat

    You'll have to edit /etc/apache2/httpd.conf in the text editor of your choice. Assuming "path/to/WebserverDirectory" is where you want to turn indexing off, add the lines
    <Directory "path/to/WebserverDirectory">
    Options -Indexes
    </Directory>
    Every subdirectory will have indexing turned off. You can enable indexing for subdirectories with
    <Directory "path/to/WebserverDirectory/subdirectory">
    Options Indexes
    </Directory>
    When you're done editing, save your changes and turn Web Sharing (in the System Preference) off and then back on. Make sure to empty your caches when reloading in your web browser.

  • Default page when no directory indexing

    Hi,
    I disabled directory indexing on the appserver. But now, for subdirectories of the docroot just a plain white page is displayed. Is it possible to have a custom page shown there?
    If so, how?
    Grtz

    I've been searching for weeks for a way to turn off directory indexing! How did you do it?
    thanks!

  • Accessing realm returns "Forbidden" error

    We host other people's Web sites. Each customer has access to their Web folder via AFP. Within their folder, we want to have a password-protected folder that has their Web log files. Coming from WebSTAR, we know about realms, so we set one up via Server Admin. The customer has browse/author permission, and our group has the same. Problem is, I keep getting a Forbidden error when I try to access the protected folder. The way Apple documents realms, it sounds like they're intertwined with WebDAV, so I enabled WebDAV, but still no go. The following is in the site's conf file:
    <Directory "path-to-protected-folder">
    <Limit GET HEAD OPTIONS CONNECT POST PROPFIND PUT DELETE PROPPATCH MKCOL COPY MOVE LOCK UNLOCK>
    Require user customer-user-name
    Require group our-group-name
    </Limit>
    AuthName "realm-name"
    AuthType Basic
    </Directory>
    It looks good to me, as far as I understand it. Can anyone point me in the right direction to getting past "Forbidden"? Thanks.
    Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Try Camelot's suggestion, and if that doesn't do it,
    take a look at error_log (/var/log/httpd/error_log)
    and see what it says, and post the relevant
    messages.
    The appleauthmodule is active. The error log had one line related to my access attempt:
    [Mon Feb 20 12:30:22 2006] [error] [client 66.241.88.36] "Directory index forbidden by rule: /Library/WebServer/Documents/Sites/chas/stats/"
    I seem to remember getting this error while evaluating OS X Server a while back, and it was a file or folder permissions problem. In the path name in the error log line above, folders Sites, chas and stats all have read and write permissions for group webadmin (which contains our staff users and user Web), and no permissions for Everyone. The latter is to keep Web customers from being able to access each other's folders. With a browser, accessing Web pages works fine, but trying to access the stats folder gives the immediate Forbidden error. Do you see anything in these permissions that seems suspicious?
    Also, in Terminal, run:
    apachectl configtest
    apachectl reported OK syntax for all config files. Thanks for your help.

  • Opitons +indexes for /Users/*/Sites

    I want to enable directory listings (i.e., Options +Indexes) for folders served from users's home folders.
    The following is a list of things I've tried, all result in a Error 403 to the browser, and an entry in /var/long/apache2/error_log similar to: "[Tue Feb 01 22:30:16 2011] [error] [client $ip] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /Network/Servers/$server/Users/$user/$dir/
    - Selecting 'Folder Listing' in Server Admin under Web > Sites for the server.
    - Selecting 'Allow All Overrides' on the same page and adding "Options +Indexes" to a .htaccess file in the directory where a listing is desired.
    - Adding a directory section to /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and/or /etc/apache2/sites/0000any_80$server.conf similar to:
    <Directory "/Users/*/Sites">
    Options +Indexes
    AllowOverride All
    </Directory>
    autoindex_module and userdir_module are enabled and working as far as I can tell. Files from /Users/*/Sites are being served as desired. I have restarted apache after making changes both with `sudo apachectl graceful`, and via Server Admin.

    can you please explain how you fixed this... i would like directory listing available for my account.

  • How to allow users to change password

    I have enabled users to change their passwords in the Server.app for the Default Site with SSL, and who can access is a group of individuals.
    When I load up the Server site, I am presented with
    a Login to which I then add my username and password and I am then presented with
    Welcome to OS X Server
    OS X Server makes it easier than ever for the people in your organization to collaborate, communicate, and share information.
    I Choose My Settings and the site is redirected to /changepassword of which a page comes
    Forbidden
    You don't have permission to access /auth/ on this server.
    The Directory /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/auth/ exists with the corret permissions.  This is an empty directoy tho
    Apache Logs:
    Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/auth/
    I cannot get this to work.  WIki's are turned on but that doesnt work either.
    If I Launch /wiki, I am prompted to login, to with I do, and i just get a blank web page
    Apache logs:
    File does not exist: /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/__collabd
    This is on a new install of OSX server
    Any Suggestions?

    Hi,
    On the landing page at the bottom it should say "change password".
    That brings you to a forbidden page?
    On my server I do not have the /auth/ folder in my default site, but my changepassword page does work.
    Can you check if going to https://127.0.0.1/changepassword does work? It will give an SSL error.
    Then it might be DNS related conflicting with another router/server in your network
    Or... charge $ 5 per user to change his or her password personally
    Goodluck!

  • While clicking Responsiby forms not opening no error in oracle apps r12

    Hi DBAs
    After RMAN cloning while clicking responsibilities forms are not opening. We are having two nodes servers. One is Admin & CM node another node is Forms & Web entry server.
    Thanks
    DBA

    In Apache log below having below error
    Directory index forbidden by rule: /u01/oracle/R12/apps/apps_st/comn/java/classes/This error can be ignored -- How To Avoid Error In Apace Error Logfile - Directory Index Forbidden By Rule [ID 1385785.1]
    Again i am running adcfgclone after changing apps password.Why do you have to run adcfgclone after changing the apps password? The cloning procedure is to run adcfgclone and make sure it completes successfully on all tier nodes, then change the apps password and run AutoConfig.
    Have you added the application URL to the trusted sites list from the browser?
    Can you find any errors in the application.log file?
    Thanks,
    Hussein

    Any suggestion about these errors?

    Welcome to the forums !
    Does your application function normally without errors ? If so, these messages can be ignored.
    Pl see MOS Doc 422419.1 (R12, 12.1.1 - How To Enable and Collect Debug for HTTP, OC4J and OPMN) for specific settings that can cause these messages to be recorded in the logs.

  • Ruby on Rails on OSX Server

    Has any one built or have instructions for installing Ruby on Rails on OSX Server 10.4?
    Do these instructions still apply:
    http://hivelogic.com/narrative/articles/ruby-rails-mongrel-mysql-osx
    And can it play alongside Apache if you use Mongrel as the web server?

    I have been trying for the last couple of weeks to get Ruby on Rails running on OSX Server as well. I followed the instructions on the site you refer to. The whole installation proceeds just fine, I can run my RoR sites locally by running scripts/server, but when trying to access the web site I get a 403 error and the log says "Directory index forbidden by rule".
    I have followed directions from other sites regarding: installing and activating the fastcgi module, setting access rights to various folders and files, modifying the httpd.conf file to allow overwrite all and access to indexes,... No progress. I still can't get the RoR site to work.
