Dis-advantages of not using Teststand source control feature.

I'm in the process of creating a Workspace file for our project, primarily because we want to use the Teststand Deployment Utility.
Included in this process is the choice to use Teststand's source control features.
So far we have been using Microsoft's Source Safe application directly to provide source control with no problems.
But now, having tried to incorporate Teststand's source control feature, which utilises Source Safe, I find myself getting bogged down in a tedious and time consuming process which I feel will eventually cause more confusion and errors than it prevents.
If we choose not to put the files in Source Control when the Workspace file is created, do we run the risk of problems at a later stage ?
Thanks.

Hi Gary,
there's no "risk" as such, however by not useing some sort of source code control or configuration management, you are making a definite commitment that you will not roll back to a previous version, and you'll be doing your own backups, and making sure that if several people require access to a particular file at the same time, that only one person is going to be allowed (by agreeing to it) to modify the file.
There's nothing that says you have to go through the TestStand sequence editor and the other workspace and projects to do the source code control.
If you prefer, then use Visual Source Safe as a stand alone interface, and check out the files by hand to your local drive, and then work on them, and then check them back in once you're finished.
Of course, you have to make sure that your relative and absolute paths are correct when you do check out the files.
By going through the TestStand sequence editor to check in and check out files, it's more convenient for most people, since they don't have to dive around two environments (TestStand and VSS) to get to the point of being able to modify a file, or even find out if someone else is modifying it.
Hope that helps.
Thanks

  • Visual Studio 2013 slows down + crashes when using Source Control features.

I have spent two full days trying to resolve this issue but no luck so here we go,
I have created a project using Visual Studio Team Foundation Server plug-in in the past. Later on I switched to
    Microsoft Git Provider.
Now when I connect to that project in the Team Explorer and double click on the solution to work on it locally it somehow changes the plug in to Microsoft Git Provider automatically and of course I can't
Commit/Commit and Push since I receive following error in the Team Explorer,
An error occurred. Detailed message: Failed to open directory 'C:/Users/.../AppData/Local/Application Data/'
Manually changing the plug-in to the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server
results in a broken Team Explorer as below,
With Settings leading to an empty pane, and also a warning in the Team Explorer's Changes page telling me the message below if I click on Pending Changes...
Microsoft Git Provider is not the current Source Control plug-in. Change Plug-in
And manually selecting the solution from Solution Explorer, right click and
Add Solution to Source Control, leads to never ending hour glass and (Not responding) visual studio.
    New Projects
Creating a new project is straight forward, unless I "Add to Source Control" is checked. If so, again never ending process if Microsoft TFS plug-in is selected in the tools and eventually me Ending the Visual Studio task. And a VERY long process
(40+ mins) if I have chosen Microsoft Git but that finishes successfully rather.
New TFS project from Team Explorer
If I create a new project in my Online Web Studio
Click on Open with Visual Studio Link => Opens and connects to a my newly created TFS in team explorer.
Clicking new in Team Explorer under Solutions to create a new solution and bind it to this Repo
leads to straight crash of Visual Studio and restarting attempt of VS.
So I really can't use Source Control from visual studio other than cloning GitHub's existing repo's on Visual Studio and Committing my current Microsoft Git managed projects.
    I have attempted
Repairing Visual Studio (no luck in results)
    Devenv.exe /setup (no luck)
Trying to scrap the SCC info on my solution then at least it won't get picked up by source control then I can Check it in as a new project. (no luck and the solution picks the Microsoft Git upon opening it by clicking on the .sln file.) I have followed
these steps in this stack overflow answer.
And lots of mucking around like removing my workspaces almost Thousand times and putting them back, binding and etc.
I am really stuck on this and it's holding me back from staring a new project (which is problematic using Adding to Source Control) and unfortunately is dependent on the old project (which is developed under Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Plug-in which
    is throwing tantrums)

    Hi Mehradzie,
Based on the description, seems you're working with Git team project in Visual Studio Online(formerly Team Foundation Service). I'd like to know whether you mean Visual Studio Git command tool as the plug-in, and if you're trying to create solutions/projects
with Visual Studio and add them to the created Git team project.
From the screenshot, you're not connect to the Git team project by using Team Explorer. To work with Git team project locally, you can follow the instructions as below:
Connect to Git team project by using Team Explorer, after that you might install Git tools if you connect to the team project for the first time
Clone the remote Git repository to a local git repository and set the path to local git repository
Create a solution and select Git source control, also saved to the local path of the local git repository
Select your branch, and then click "Changes" and Commit the changes
Click "unsynced commits" and push the commit to remote git repository
You can also refer to the links below for more information about getting started with Git in Visual Studio Online.

  • The project file is not bound to source control, but the solution contains source control binding information for it.

This may be more of a SQL Server Management Studio question, but I couldn't find a SSMS forum...
I've got a database solution that contains several projects.  They're just to keep track of changes to stored procedures, triggers, views, etc in a few databases I maintain.  There is a problem with two of the projects though.  No matter what I do, I can't seem to get them bound to source control right.  When I open the solution, I get:
The project file is not bound to source control, but the solution contains source control binding information for it.
With two options, use solution binding and remove solution binding.  If I keep the solution binding, everything works fine.  But it's really annoying to have to deal with every time I open the solution.  If I remove the solution binding, the projects are now unbound again.  If I try to fix them (using the change source control or Add Selected Projects to Source Control options under the File->source control menu), I just end up in the same situation.  I've even tried deleting the projects and re-creating them from scratch, then re-adding them to VSS.  If I open the solution files in a text editor I can see the SCC tags in every project, but these two.  Since I can't manually add the tags, and Management Studio itself only seems to want to bind them the wrong way, I'm getting really frustrated.
Can anyone point me toward a way to bind these so they work like the rest?

However, that does not appear to be the ONLY cause of the problem.  I am a single user and only using TFS2010 and SSMS2008R2.  My issue is that I wanted a solution file for each project so that they could managed independently, and a super-solution
file that contained all projects, so that I could perform system-wide searches and cross-checks.
    I solved the problem by:
    1. Choosing the option to use solution binding, then
    2. Adding another project to the solution.  This forced the re-write of the solution file.
    3. Adding another script to the project.  This forced the re-write of the project file.
    4. Checking in all changes.
    5. Deleting the new script and the extra project,
    6 Checking in all changes.
This appears to have solved the problem.

  • Why not use Jsp for  control in MVC2 ?

    hi
i am rajendra , i am preparing interview FAQ, so please give me my Que. Ans.
    1) we are using servlet for control in MVC2 Module, then why we can not use
    Jsp for control in mvc2
    2) if we used jsp for control in mvc2 then what is disadvantage compare to if using servlet for control in mvc2
Please give me ans. as soon as..
    Thanks.

Are you preparing a FAQ for others or are you just cramming before an upcoming interview and someone gave you a set of questions? It looks more like the latter to me.
If you haven't actually written any MVC based code, you won't be able to snow the interviewer. It's better to just relax, get a good night's sleep and impress them with your willingness to learn, your fit with the team and whatever real accomplishments you have to show.
If you really want an answer to this I suggest that you try writing an MVC2 system using JSP for the controller, which is possible, and then try doing the same in a servlet, or better yet using a framework like Spring MVC or Struts to provide the servlet for you and let you concentrate on your application.

  • How do I use Perforce Source Control on a substituted drive

    Hello all,
I am wrestling my way through using perforce as an integrated source control package in Labview.
The path has many potholes but seems possible.
    My latest challenge:
    Substituted Paths.
In a professional source control environment there are many users with many views/workspaces and it is good proactice for each one to have a unique name [user][machine][branchname][myprojectstructure]
Labview is notorious for requiring fixed, absolute paths due to the way .vi's remember their callers, my previous practice using IBM/Rational clearcase was to substitue ("subst B: ." ) the project root [myprojectstructure] to another drive, say B: for example.  This makes Labview is happy as the paths are now fixed, the developer is happy as they don't have to check out a miriad of files.
This practice is widespread in the embedded software development world and isn't exactly innovative.
    Perforce
Clearcase integrated into Labview works seamlessly, you just point the path to the substituted drive and all is well.
    Perforce, not so much.
The setup options within labview whilst being intuitive and easy to use, don't appear allow this method.
Does anyone know how to do the equivalent in Perforce?
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks John,
I will see if this works
I hadn't thought about substituting the drive first and then populating the workspace.
I can see that this implimentation requires discipline,
There is a significant danger of refreshing the wrong workspace and trashing modified files.

  • Can teamcenter community be used for source control?

I have this new tool called teamcenter community and I'm trying to see how well it will work with source control for labview. I haven't learned how to use it fully yet, but when I try to open a vi get the error message:
The document could not be opened for editing. A windows SharePoint Services compatible application could not be found to edit the document.
I'm using 8.5. Is this a feature that was added to a more recent environment.
Is this feature a possiblity? So far I've been able to use it to manage file, but haven't had success with folders.

    Steve:
Unfortunately, teamcenter isn't supported in LabVIEW (past or present). A full list of supported clients is located in this KB. While it may be possible to use other clients, there hasn't been any testing done with them, so they may very well not work with LabVIEW.

  • Using VSS Source Control via RoboHelp

Is there a way to connect RoboHelp directly to a local VSS
database in order to use the same Source Control database as the
    rest of the dev. team?

    Hi Sevans,
Indeed there is. You can plug the source into a library (this
will need to be set up by the VSS administratory) BUT just to be
clear, Robohelp does not integrate with VSS directly like some
development tools, it has its on Source control program for that
Robohelp Souce Control. You will need to follow some basic
practices to ensure that you source remains robust. Are you talking
about using VSS just to pull in the source OR to allow multiple
authors to work on the same project?

  • How to not use a Mackie Control device

Is there anyway to make Logic not adding a Mackie Control device automatically, or anyway to bypass one that is added?
Why I'm asking is because I want to use V-Control, which uses the Mackie Control protocol, on an iPad to control MIO Console and still use Logic Remote. No Logic however always automatically add a Mackie Control, even in the same session that I delete it. Since I still want to use Logic Remote and a Korg nanoKontrol bypassing all controllers isn't helpful.
    Thanks!

I found what I was looking for: In the Control Surface Setup window, under New, it's possible to turn of Automatic Installation.
    Sorry for the bandwidth.

  • Visarc generates dirty project using SVN source control

    Hi,
I've read in different topics some issues related to the visarc file, but unfortunately, none of them helped me out. I was wondering if any of you came across this issue and found a solution or workaround to it.
The problem relates to a LabVIEW project which opens dirty, as you commonly say, under some circunstances. Below I will explain some of the problems I encountered as I tried to track this problem down.
    1. I'm running a large LabVIEW Run-Time project using a PXI with several FPGA - cRIO.
    2. I found that when opening the project file, this is perfectly clean and no asterisk shows in the title bar. I close the project and no saving is needed.
    3. I open the project again and I open a sub-VI which contains the following code:
    4. Straight away, the file visarc shows up under the Dependencies tree of the Real-Time PXI and the asterisk shows now on the title bar of the project (not the VI).
    5. The VI closes without needed to be saved but the project says that an item was added, removed and added, and it has to be saved (as soon as I close the subVI above, the visarc file dissapears from the Dependencies section).
    6. What I do next is to add this file visarc (located in Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2012\resource) to the project under the PXI tree. I then save the project and close it.
    7. I open the project again, and it keeps being clean (not dirty, as you say).
    8. I open the same sub-vi than before and everything keeps being clean and no saving is needed neither on the sub-VI nor the project. Everything goes smooth in my local computer from now on.
However, the issue that I can not resolve follows:
    9. We are two people working on this project, and we're using SVN as source version control. Everything works fine in my computer, but when my partner update the files on his computer, the project opens dirty as soon as it opens (only the project, the sub-VI is no needed to be saved).
    10. My partner just save the project and close it, and it becomes clean straight away in his computer. The files which are saved are the aliases file (I expected that), the labview project file, and the LVLPS File of the project.
This issue will happen again as soon as any of us downloads the SW committed by the other.
I hope any of you can help me out with this issue. Any suggestion or idea are welcome.
Thank you very much in advanced.
    Best regards,
    danidpr

As far as I know, the resource manager does not support version control. If you map the version control folder to a local folder, you can use that in RoboHelp. But I'm afraid that any changes in the resource manager files will require you to manually check them out first. This is how I'm doing it anyway.

  • I can not use  camera switch control of accessibility. Ios8.1

hi, i have iPad Air with Ios 8.1  but i want to use my camera for siri or something...

When you open your camera app, does it say "HDR on" at the top?
HDR photos are better quality but take up much more space.
Also, go to Settings>photos and camera.  Scroll down to "keep normal photo".  Is it on?  This feature saves a normal copy and an HDR copy of every photo you take.
I bet your friend has this feature turned off along with the HDR as well.

  • Modload: undefined symbols 'memcmp' - though was not used in source.

    hello all,
I'm getting this error - undefined symbols 'memcmp' - while trying to load my kernel module. FYI, the 'memcmp' was never used in the source code. I'm using Solaris 8 running 64bit kernel on sparc with latest 8_Recommended patches installed. Am using GCC 3.1 from SunFreeware.com as the compiler.
Has anyone here encounter similar problem? Or have any pointer? Any thought would be apreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I think, gcc believes that a standard ANSI-C environment / library is available, so that gcc
is allowed to generate code that calls standard ANSI-C library routines.
Try to compile the driver with the gcc option "-ffreestanding", so that gcc doesn't make any
assumptions about the available runtime environment.

  • Anyone using source control AND cloud sharing?

Hi. I'm curious if anyone has any experience or tips to share about a RoboHelp environment that uses BOTH source control and cloud sharing.
My company uses perforce. I'm purchasing a couple copies of TCS5, one for me in California, one for writer colleague in Europe. I'd like to use Perforce for version control/backup, but use Dropbox for RH asset sharing and sync. Is this workabout? I'm guessing that the Dropbox/sync mechnism won't work if one or both of us has not checked out a file that needs to be (automatically via sync) updated. ("Not checked out" = file is in read only state.)
If RH automatically checks files in/out of perforce in order to complete a cloudshare sync, that would be most cool!
Thanks in advance for your ideas!
    -Kurt

    Hi Kurt
Have you tried the scenario with RH 11?
It should automatically check-out the file or should prompt for it based on the settings Tools -> Options -> Version Control
I tried with Robo Source Control and SharePoint. And it is working for me. Check-in has to be done mannually.
Please try and let us know the result.
    Thanks

    hi, smercurio…
i've tried your way. but it doesn't work. :-(
but your idea helps me. i've tried some times and it's OK now.  thank you. :-)
here are my steps. ( is it right? )
    1. start LabVIEW.
    2. Tools >> Options >> Source Control.  select source control provider name as my microsoft VSS.  no error message.
    3. Then set my source control as None. a warning dialogue popup, "You have selected not to use any source control provider". Yes to continue.
    4. exit LabVIEW
    5. edit LabVIEW.INI. delete the part of source control. ( like the attached picture).
    6. Start LabVIEW. and reset the source control as normal.
      Bingo! it's OK. :-)
