Disable 1 CPU core to save battery power?

Would disabling one of two CPU cores in energy saver make the battery last longer?
Energy saver features no longer make clear what is happening. When using the slower 9400 GPU is the processor also throttled?
It would be nice to be able to see if this is the case and manually throttle the processor if it is not.
Activity monitor should show when cpu's are disabled and or throttled.
CPU Disable/Throttle Settings should include option to come back online if processor use reaches throttle limit for a period of time, or only when certain programs reach the throttle limit for an extended period of time. like photoshop in a large batch operation or final cut in project render.
This request has been sent to Apple Feedback.

The facility to turn off a core is mainly for use by developers who need to test their software under different conditions as well as to be sure the software will work on single-core machines. It's not really intended for use as an energy saving technique.
Remember that if you switch GPUs you must then restart or log out for it to take effect. I'm not sure which of those you are supposed to do since I don't have one of the new machines. I think the info is in your user manual.
Check your Energy Saver preferences to be sure you implement settings that will preserve battery power such as sleeping the drive on idle, putting the screen asleep quickly when not in use - two or three minutes, and putting the computer to sleep after a short period of non-use - five or ten minutes. Enable the option to dim the screen and turn down the screen's backlight as much as you can stand. These all help to extend battery operation.
You really should not need to disable one of the cores as the built-in speedstep should throttle down the processor when idle or when the processor doesn't require full power.

  • Is there a way to disable a CPU core to save battery on the Twist?

That thing overheats even when it's on low power (stepping on lowest). Can we disable a core to make it less hot?

With Intel i3/i5/7, the cores are already being automatically disabled. So it /shouldn't/ be necessary or result in any battery gain or temperature descent...
Do you have working cases indicating otherwise?

  • Satellite M100 - Does a disabled firewire port saves battery power?

    Hey everybody
I do not need IEEE so..
If I disable firewire in device manager will it turn it off and will it help to save battery power?

    Hi Dmitrij
I doubt that disabled firewire port will help you to save battery power.
If you want to save the battery power you should check the Toshiba Power Saver settings and options.

  • Disable CPU core in Solaris 10

    Hi,
can anybody help me to disable cpu core in solaris 10. my server is Sparc T4-1 server (1 physical processor with 8 core 64 threads). I am able to disable threads using psradm, but not sure about disabling core.
    thanks
    Sajith.P.V

You can disable a single core in solaris using "psradm -f <cpu id>"
    man page for psradm
The psradm utility changes the operational status of proces-
sors. The legal states for the processor are on-line, off-
    line, spare, faulted, and no-intr.
An on-line processor processes LWPs (lightweight processes)
and can be interrupted by I/O devices in the system.
An off-line processor does not process any LWPs. Usually, an
off-line processor is not interruptible by I/O devices in
the system. On some processors or under certain conditions,
it might not be possible to disable interrupts for an off-
line processor. Thus, the actual effect of being off-line
might vary from machine to machine.
A spare processor does not process any LWPs. A spare proces-
sor can be brought on-line, off-line or to no-intr by a
privileged user of the system or by the kernel in response
to changes in the system state.
Example 1 Setting Processors to off-line
The following example sets processors 2 and 3 off-line:
    % psradm -f 2 3
Example 2 Setting Processors to no-intr
The following example sets processors 1 and 2 no-intr:
    % psradm -i 1 2
Example 3 Setting Processors to spare
The following example sets processors 1 and 2 spare, even if
either of the processors was in the faulted state:
    % psradm -F -s 1 2
Example 4 Setting All Processors on-line
    % psradm -a -n
Example 5 Forcing Processors to off-line
The following example sets processors 1 and 2 offline, and
revokes the processor bindings from the processes bound to
    them:
    % psradm -F -f 1 2

  • How to save battery power

How can I save battery power on my iPhone5. When I go to work I keep my phone in a drawer at that time it seems to lose power very fast. Any other time the power is fine.

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
If cellular reception is minimized when placed on a drawer, more battery will be used trying to maintain cellular reception with or without making any calls. If not being used during that time, enable Airplane mode on the iPhone before being placed in the drawer.

  • HOW TO DISABLE CPU behavior when no battery inside macbookpro ?

I realized, when i do not have the abttery inside the macbook, what i do not fotne, to save chargecycles, that my cpu wil not go above 1ghz. i observed this with the use of the coreduotemp application, wich can be free downloaded and monitors temperature and cpu speed of your macbook. i wrote to the developper, and he confirms that observation, so it is not an software bug.
First, i invite you to test this on your macs and report, and secound i would like to have a solution, i bought this mac for power, not for slow power.
maybe someone knows how to disable this behavior, thx

If your MBP is consistently running at 80°C or higher, there is probably a problem with it... My machine idles around 54°C (when connected to an external monitor -- less without) and maxes around 75°C when the processor and GPU are being pushed (i.e. video intense gaming).
Additionally, the MBP's battery is not Lithium Ion -- it is Lithium Polymer -- and is designed to be used IN the laptop. You are worrying about nothing (or next to nothing); even if your theory is correct, you are perhaps talking about a 5% decrease in the overall lifespan of the battery...if you think that is worth the possibility of data loss, then I guess running without the battery is for you...
However, you will not be able to disable the down-throttle of the CPU speed.

  • I just got an iPhone 5 64 gb model and the battery drains extremely fast even after tweaking the phone to save battery power anyone else having the same issue!?

Should I take it to the apple store?

    Try these steps as needed.
    1. Reset iPhone (no data loss): Press both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.
    2. Restore in iTunes using a backup (no data loss)
    3. Restore in iTunes as new (without  using a backup)
Backing Up, updating, and restoring your iPhone and iPod touch software

  • Under battery power supply Tecra A7 works slowly

I have a notebook TECRA A7, and I have some problem with the battery. When I don't use alimentation AC, the notebook gets too slowly with programs like Netbeans.
How can I solve this problem?

    Hello
To save battery power and allow longer notebook usage Toshiba has designed Toshiba power saver tool. As you can see there are few different power profile available. If you use battery power supply it will be automatically switch to Normal profile and there is CPU speed set to lower level. You can change it manually and set to maximum performance.
NetBeans software is not known to me but it is possible that notebook runs slowly if software needs more CPU power.

  • Saving battery power

Hi Is there any you can switch things off that you don't use on the iphone 3gs to save battery power?

Yes. You obviously haven't read the User Guide (link in iPhone Safari) and I suggest you look up how to enable/disable settings in the iPhone. This support article will give much info on optimizing battery life:

  • Battery power saveage

ok i was wondering, so when im in a game/app and i hit the sleep/wake button (without going to home first) and the screen goes black, and then when i turn it back on the game/app is still running, so my question is is that i no putting it to sleep saves battery power but is it using any extra battery power to keep the app/game still running while its still on sleep mode? this is because i always find myself having to wake it up and shut the app down and then put it to sleep agine.

What is your Cycle Count? If it's less than 300, you are likely eligible for a free replacement from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
If you have more than 300 cycles, your battery is getting old and you will need to buy a new one. Typical life of a Li-based battery is 400-500 charge cycles.
    Hope this helps...

  • PPro not using all cpu cores evenly

    Hey Guys!
I've been recently trying to optimize my laptop to get better performance.
    I have a Lenovo Y550P -
    i7 Q 720 1.60 GHz
    8GB Ram
Nvidia GT240m video card (1gb ram)
    64 bit windows 7
    500 gb 7200 RPM HDD
I know this is not the ideal setup, but it is what I have.
I have a massive amount of GoPro footage to process, and was having issues shuttling at 1/4 resolution.  I made some tweaks such as:
    removed windows visual effects
    enabled hard drive write buffering
disable CPU core parking (laptop thing)
various tweaks to the services.msc file
"enabled" my video card for cuda =)
This has greatly improved my shuttling for 2x and 4x.  however when I watch the performance monitor I notice it uses CPU cores 4 & 7 significantly more than the other cores.  CPU usage only reaches about 40% during shuttling, yet stutters.
Here is a screen capture of resource monitor on disks:  I'm currently reading the footage from an external USB 3.0 drive (F), scratch disks are set to internal (C).
Here is a screen capture of CPU resources, notice how cpu core 4 (start from 0) has higher usage.
Is there something I can improve on my setup to make my system more efficient, or is all this just because of the HDD bottleneck?  Any advice on improving my limited systems performance would be appreciated.
    Thank you for your time!

    Sorry, here are the images!

  • MSI 870A-G54 (FX) CPU Core control unlock setting error

    Hello,
My motherboard MSI 870A-G54 (FX) has strange issue: CPU Core unlock option is not working properly. I've switched in BIOS  Cell Menu the setting "CPU Core Control" - Enabled, and after the restart, there is error message about RAM chek - till 3325 MB instead 16 GB, and after that windows7 Ultimate x64 tries to load, but unfortunately displays the Blue Screen of Death. After disabling CPU Core Control option windows start normaly. Also after using MSI LiveUpdate5 and installing BIOS Code unlock Technology 1.0.106, I got the following message: Error Message
    PC Hardware details:
    CPU - TripleCore AMD Phenom II X3 Black Edition 720, 2800 MHz (14 x 200), Codename:Heka, Core Stepping: RB-C2
    16GB (4x4GB) Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G
VGA Sapphire Radeon HD 4830, Codename: RV770
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64, SP1
    BIOS   V17.18
I'll be glad to have some of your ideas how to handle it...

I also have an X3 720BE. Mine will not unlock, some do not... it's not a built in feature on 'All' CPU's.
That said.. I have owned mine since the beginning of AM3. It has been a great CPU with 3 cores. I have had OC settings at or above 3.4GHz stable.
If you search you can find a lot of OC information. This was an early release AM3, and a lot of owners, forums, test websites etc.. have information available. I still use it in my HTPC.
Owners who have been able to 'unlock' thier CPU's do get extra core(s).. but it's not as stable. I would rather have a stable, able to OC CPU than an unlocked one that can't obtain the OC stable numbers. It's a mind game.
    Good Luck

  • Use a single core at a time to save battery?

Is it possible to only use a single processor core at a time to save battery?

    echo 0 >> /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/online
    echo 0 >> /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online
Only use one of them at a time...
Not sure if it would save power though.
