Disable browser plugins
Is there a way in html/asp/javascript to disable the browser plugin and force a pdf to be opened in Adobe Reader instead? I dont want my customers to be able to save the pdf I send them, only to be able to print it. I have tried setting the security options in the pdf but the Chrome and Firefox plugins seem to be able to defeat them. If I open the pdf in Adobe Reader I can print it but not save it.
Thanks for any help that you can give me.
OK, so their PDF viewer ignores the locking of my PDF. Let's explain a bit more about what I'm doing so you may be able to guide me.
I don't possess Adobe Acrobat. My PDF's are of musical scores and are produced by some 3rd party software called PDFCreator, which works in conjunction with my music software (Sibelius).
I have tried to 'lock' the PDF using an online PDF editor called CutePDF Editor. Using this I disabled everything in the Security section, Printing, Changing, Copying, etc. and set a password for the document.
However, when I open the PDF I can still save it, even though printing is disabled. On the other hand I have received PDF's from other sources, like bank statements etc, which definitely have saving disabled whatever method I choose to view them, so the question is, must I assume that this is something which is only possible if I have Adobe Acrobat?

Adobe Reader Browser Plugin - How to disable right click print
Here is some background to my question
I'm using Adobe Reader 9.2 and have configured to use the Adobe Reader Active X browser plugin.
which has the effect of launching pdf's within the IE browser rather than launching the full client. This is all working fine
I have a requirement that I need to lockdown certain menu items (for the purpose of this example, lets say "SaveAs" and "Print") and toolbars which I have also done successfully using folder level javascripts. For example I have created a HideMenuItems.js file and placed this in the "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Javascripts", here is a snippet of the file which relate to hiding / removing the SaveAs and Print items
app.hideToolbarButton("Print");
app.hideToolbarButton("SaveFileAs");
app.hideToolbarButton("Save");
These work fine and hide the Print and Save toolbar buttons from the Adobe Reader Browser plugin menu.
As an aside If I wanted to hide the same icons from the full adobe reader client I could use app.hideMenuItem("Print");
So this all works fine and I'm happy so far. Now, with these settings in place I launch the pdf within the browser, although save and print buttons are now hidden and I cannot add them back, I can still RightClick anywhere in the pdf and get the context menu, from there I can select print.
What I'm after is a way to either
(i) Selectively remove menu items from the right click context menu, and therefore remove the print option e.g something like app.[hideRightClickMenuItem]("Print") would be great but I dont know what that method is called.
or
(ii) Disable the RightClick context menu altogether for Adobe Reader Browser Plugin
Not bothered what the solution is whether its a reg hack - HKCU / HKLM / or javascript line I can add to my HideMenuItems.js, But basically I want to lock down the ability for the users to select print button from all sources including "CTRL + P",
Or if this is not possible let them hit CTRL P or right click print, but then not display the Adobe Print Dialog.
Basically the printing of the documents in handled by our web app sending a silent print to the adobe application which again works fine, I just need to prevent the users from being able to initiate a print from within the pdf when displaying the pdf in a browser.
Having searched around there is an API called AVAppRegisterForPageViewRightClicks which is supposed to prevent right clicks, But I dont know how to use this, or whether it can be used within my HideMenuItems.js file, tried many different syntaxes but to no avail.
Does anyone have any experience in this? Adobe - do you have any suggestions ?
Cheers
WillHi thanks for your response, yes it seems this API is availalbe but there are no examples of how to use it. You mentioned its available in Adobe reader and Adobe Acrobat plugins. Well I'm using the Adobe Reader Active X Browser Plugin so how would I use this API to restrict the Browser plugin.l
I am not a developer writing my own custom plugins, I simply want to use the out of the box adobe reader product, specifically the Active X browser plugin, but I need to be able to customise and restrict what the user is able to do.
The reason I need to do this is that we publish IE on a citrix server which users access to launch this highly secure web based application. The sensitive data that they view is in the forms of PDFs which are viewed by the Adobe reader browser plugin within the browser. The web application controls who can save, export, print etc, so I need to be able to lock down the Adobe Reader Active X browser plugin so that the user cannot initiate save, and print functionality from within the viewed pdf. I've done this successfully by restricting the menu and toolbar items but it is still possible to right click on the viewed pdf and click select print from the context menu. This would cause us a big security flaw, which would result in users that are only supposed to view being able to click print.
I published a desktop (locked down) and published IE (locked down) all successfully with GPOs so the users cannot do anything they are not supposed to do, however Adobe reader it seems cannot be easily locked down and this is a problem as I might have to start looking at viable alterantives. Surely a simple requirement as this could be acheieved with relative ease.
In an ideal world there would be an available GPO template (.ADM file), which could be used to centrally manage these type of settings. I dont even mind writing an ADM myself, I've written many before, but for example what I need is the appropriate registry entries and how they are used to lock down / restrict certain functions so that I can write such an .ADM file.
I dont mind how I achieve this, I just need a way to do it. So if using the API AVAppRegisterForPageViewRightClicks would achieve this, can someone please tell me how I can implement something that would use this API to restrict the right Click Print options for example.
The sort of answer I;m looking for would be
Create a file, paste in this code, place the file is this location xxxxx, this is a per machine fix so will affect all users
or
Edit the regstry and make this HKCU change xxxxx - This is obviously a per user fix so use normal methods to get this into every users profile.
or
Open up the file in this location xxxxxx and add AVAppRegisterForPageViewRightClicks = AlwaysDisable (or whatever the syntax is)
Thanks for you help
Cheers

How can I Disable XI Plugin for Firefox?
I have disabled the plugin on the Firefox plugin page (Tools>Add-ons), but it re-enables. I have changed the two .dll files to .dxx. Tools>Options>Applications does not show .pdf. I also tried to disable from within Reader's options panel with no success. I really don't want anything to open in my browser. Can anyone help?
Firefox by default uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin. If you haven't manually changed that, it is not an Adobe Reader issue.

How to save toolbar state in browser plugin?
How do I get the Reader browser plugin to save the toolbar state?
I'm using Adobe Reader XI as a browser plugin in Firefox. I've set it to disable Read mode by default. I like to have several tools at my disposal, so I right click the toolbar and show all the page display tools that I like. When I quit and load a new PDF in the browser, the toolbar state is lost and I have to show all my favorite tools again. This gets annoying when done repeatedly throughout the day.
The native Reader program saves toolbar state. Why not the plugin?Toolbar entries for the desktop and browser instances are different, so what you assign in one won't update the other. That's because a lot of things aren't allowed in the browser plugin. You can't directly manipulate the toolbar options in the browser instance of Adobe Reader XI, they're factory-defined.

How do I disable the plugin check at Firefox Version 18 or higher startup?
This thread carries on from a discussion about How do I disable the plugin check at Firefox startup? As clearly Tylerdowner did not like my previous message and so would like me to obviously start a whole new thread to find out what’s going on.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/938821
Tyler: I am still looking for support and so are the other 83 people who have this problem. Hence why I am here, not to have to start another thread, not to have a go at you or just to run around further to get a clear, straight forward answer. I am now back to running Version 12 (which, has not solved the problem), with up-to-date plugins which are all supported.
Don’t fob us off, PLEASE HELP. Unless I am very much mistaken, this is the place we are meant to find help, right? Not to be completely blown off because somebody says something you don’t like. Perhaps someone better suited to this will help. I’ll follow on from then with MY problem from Tyler’s final comment as it is highly relevant:
Tylerdowner: Rumor Control, if you are running Firefox 18 with up to date plugins, then you are having a different problem than this thread is about. This is for Firefox 3.6 users who have old plugins, not those with updated software.I should also add this info for all to see clear as part of my question (can be seen in More system details too):
I liked that version, was the first ever FireFox browser I tried and because of it made it my number 1 browser. There have been a heck of a lot from 3.6 to 18 though I think we’d all agree. Progress can and often is messy, but worth it.
Which is fine except mine, a different version, up-to-date plugins – and I’ve still same problem as these guys. It’s exactly the same even for me who has updated: How do we get rid of the Plugin Check Screen every time we start FireFox? I know I am up-to-date – as it tells me every single time!
I agree everyone should be up-to-date with the software and this may very well be the case that solves a lot of people with lower versions – yet I can say I updated from version 12 to the latest 18, spent the time getting half a dozen different updates as it wanted (all of which are supported according to the link you provided) plugins and yet I am still having the same problem as users with 3.6 and older plugins! Went back to version 12.0 and I am getting the problem since installing version 18.
Therefore from the fact I’m still getting the popup every time telling me everything is updated and safe, which is lovely to know, still doesn’t change the fact it won’t go away! Not a major problem but it is getting tedious now every single time.
Like I say I am willing to wait and see if this gets fixed anyway which to be fair, FireFox seem to do a lot better than the competition. If it doesn’t though I’d still rather go back to an older version just to be rid of it! But not even that is now working to be gone of it! It’s gotten that ridiculous for me now too!

How to disable Java Plugin on a few thousand Windows PCs?
We have installed Sun Java 2 SE Runtime Environment 1.4.0 on all our Windows NT4/2000 Workstations. The installation was performed by InstallShield Silent as described on the following page: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/guide/plugin/developer_guide/silent.html
Now we want to change the following Java Plugin setting to disable the plugin for the Internet Explorer:
"Control Panel / Java Plugin 1.4.0 / Browser Tab / Microsoft Internet Explorer" = disabled
Because this we have to do this on a few thousand PCs we cannot do it manually. We are looking for a possibility to do this by a unattended or silent setup. Does Sun recommend a special procedure for doing this? Or does someone know the necessary registry or file changes? We've tracked the changes but we couldn't find a working solution.
(We are using Microsoft SMS for software distribution and have the tools to make registry or file changes.)
Thank you and regards
SvenI Remembered that the JRE is simply doing a re-direct on the MSJVM key using "Treat As. So I did a MS Sysdiff to capture the changes. OFF.DMP and ON.DMP were created. OFF.dmp shows that there are basically 4 registry changes. I created the following cmd file to delete the 4 registry keys: Watch out for the word wraps....
echo off
REG DEL "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_SUN" /FORCE
REG DEL "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\SUN_JAVA_2" /FORCE
REG DEL "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501}\TreatAs" /FORCE
REG DEL "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Plug-in\1.4.0\UseJava2IExplorer" /FORCE
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_SUN"
IF %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 ECHO Successfull!
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\SUN_JAVA_2"
IF %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 ECHO Successfull!
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501}\TreatAs"
IF %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 ECHO Successfull!
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Plug-in\1.4.0\UseJava2IExplorer"
IF %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 ECHO Successfull!
This successfully works by removing the registry entries and therefore not redirecting IE to use the JRE. Then the NEQ or "not equal to" can be used to verify it and log your errors and report back to you as you so desire. OK, use EQU to find out if it fails because it is found.... We do this kind of thing as admin but user rights seem to work. If you wanted to you could create the OFF.DIF file and run sysdiff /apply /m OFF.DIF. Remember not to change anything but the uncheck & apply so you don't capture MRU and other user keys. I digress... Here are the complete ON.DMP and OFF.DMP text files line compressed for space.

StageWebView disable Flash Plugin
Hello everybody,
I am developing an App with Adobe AIR for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
In some part of the application I use a StageWebView to display HTML-Content.
Unfortunately within the HTML-Content there is flash-content and its performance is bad.
Therefore we disabled rendering of Flash content by adding "<application android:hardwareAccelerated="false"/>" to the AIR-Discriptor file.
But this options only prevent rendering/visibility of flash-content and actually does not disable the use of the plugin within the StageWebView.
Also if I changed under Android browser settings the usage of plugins the behavior is the same.
The native android browser behaves the right way.
Is there any posibility to really disable the plugin in StageWebView?
Regards,
JanThe difference you're seeing is that iOS does not allow Flash plug-ins, even through StageWebView.
(sorry, can't help you on how to turn off the plug for Android) -
Annoying! SP Browser Plugin for Mac Chrome
Hello Experts
Has anybody successfully managed to remove the exasperating notice that appears at the top of OSX Chrome everytime you load a page in SP?
It says "Could not load Sharepoint Browser plugin"
It's not fixed by disabling the presence feature like many claim - I'm thinking this is a master page fix, bit not sure where to start.
Any guidance would be brilliant.
Thanks
ChrisHi,
you can remove this message if you add script to the master page that overwrites the following javascript functions.
function ProcessImn() {}
function ProcessImnMarkers() {}
The origin is that SharepPoint tries to load the presence information that are not available in Chrome.
The other workaround is that you use SharePoint with Safari instead of Chrome. If you have Offfice 2011 for Mac installed. Then you have the extension for SharePoint installed. This only asked you once if you like to trust the plugin and you won't get the
message again.
You will also find the Web Extension in Safari if you go to:
Preferences
Security
Manage Web Extentsions
SharePoint Browser Plug-in
Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Stefan

Windows users keep getting prompted about java version being insecure and are advised to disable the plugin. They then complain that java based websites no longer work. Can I disable / prevent this warning feature. And can I re-enable java plugin via command line or script? I need to do this on a large scale and various versions of firefox. Right now I will need to abandon firefox if I cannot easily resolve this. Yes I realize updating to latest version of java is a solution... but this will take too much time now and how long before another security fix for java and then I will have to update yet again.
Tylerdowner, to say that Firefox 3.6 is no longer supported is not an answer. Apparently, the so-called block deployed for the Mac OS X version of Firefox, created to deal with a vulnerability in Oracle's Java, has now crept into the Windows version. Moreover, it is blocking the latest version of Java, which was not intended according to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741592. The official text of the block follows:
Java Plugin has been blocked for your protection.
Why was it blocked?
Outdated versions of the Java plugin are vulnerable to an actively exploited security issue. All Mac OS X users are strongly encouraged to update their Java plugin through Software Update, or disable it if no alternatives are available. For more information, please read our blog post or Oracle's Advisory.
Who is affected?
All Firefox users who have installed the Java plugin, JRE versions below 1.6.0_31 or between 1.7.0 and 1.7.0_2.
What does this mean?
Users are strongly encouraged to disable the problematic add-on or plugin, but may choose to continue using it if they accept the risks described.
When Mozilla becomes aware of add-ons, plugins, or other third-party software that seriously compromises Firefox security, stability, or performance and meets certain criteria, the software may be blocked from general use. For more information, please read this support article.
Well, whoever wrote the code to block the Java plug-ins specified above screwed up, since it is blocking even the updated Java plug-in.
I have an enterprise with many computers, and we had deployed Firefox as our browsing platform. Based on the latest decisions at Mozilla, new version numbering, forced release cycle, and almost all add-on vendors just walking away from the maintainence nightmare created by this decision, I guess it's time to move over to the Dark Side and adopt Google Chrome. -
Most answers tell me how to update firefox or how to fix it, how to make the plugin check work or tell me some workarounds. That´s why i think Mozilla has no interest to let the people disable the plugin check, because it got implemented for a reason.
But the whole thing is not about computer science. It is about psychology, respect and the free will of the people.
At first i get annoyed by this plugin check, then i want my revenge. I want to disable the plugin check! I do not want to make the plugin check work. I do not want to install a new version of firefox. I do not want to update my firefox and i do not want to fix my firefox. In fact i want a (virtual) sledge hammer to destroy my firefox - just a little bit regarding the plugin check.
But one feels treated like a child, that has to be protected from it´s own decisions.
That´s when i feel annoyed the second time around.
So, if mozilla doesn´t grant me the choice to disable the plugin check at will, i am only free to decide which browser i´m going to use.@ the-edmeister
I´d like to apologise if you felt offended by my question. That was not my intention. Within my explanation i tried to describe the feelings of an unexperienced user like my father (77 years old). Because i felt the answers given so far were evasive. Everybody recommended to update or fix firefox respectively the plugin check, but no one seemed to answer the question if one can disable the plugin check completetly.
I just wanted to know if there is some kind of censorship that blends out answers inconvenient to mozilla. Thank you! -
i disabled flash plugin.
now i open site - http://www.coursesmart.com/9780495797494/2
page contains images. When i click on print preview button, i cant see anything.... also i tried all pdf plugins and extensions, but none help to convert/print page in pdf. please help. how can i print whole page to pdf?Doesn't work in Google Chrome either.
Looks that the page has a lot of protection measures (context menu is disabled) and DIVs that overlay each other, so it is possible that the print routine only sees an empty DIV and not the image or the real page.<br />
That big image consists of two parts as you can see via Tools > Page Info > Media and the inspector. -
How do I stop downloaded MP3s playing in the QuickTime Browser Plugin?
I have a number of websites created in Flash, which are used to promote musicians and bands in Bristol, UK. I use Flash because it allows animations, music players, background music, and all the other features ideal for promotional websites.
We offer MP3s for free download so our fans and followers can own some of our tracks.
Up until last week, a link directly to an MP3 would launch the "Save As..." download dialogue, allowing users to save the files to their PC.
However, since installing QuickTime 7, when you click on a link to an MP3 it now launches a nasty little embedded Quicktime player, which you can't save from or do anything useful with.
This is absolutely useless as I already have streaming audio and a built-in music player in my site, and I can now no longer offer MP3 downloads. I don't want to have to start zipping my MP3s or anything hideous like that, does anyone know a way that I can stop this happening?
I can't expect visitors to my sites to do anything, so I need some way of changing the URL so that it doesn't trigger the QT plugin.
Would really appreciate some assistance as this has effectively ruined the most significant part of most of our websites.
Thanks

Intel P4 2.8Ghz, 1.5Gb Windows XP Pro SP2Ah, well, it was worth a try, but since you're clearly not actually reading my post - I'm using FLASH, as I clearly stated so you cannot right click.
As for the QT Mime settings, what you are saying is woefully inaccurate, and once again you aren't reading what I am writing. Quicktime is not the default player for MP3s on my PC. And as of two days ago there was no QT MP3 browser plugin either. I installed Quicktime because I have to have it to play MOV files.
By installing QT the program arbitrarily (that means it did it without any involvement or permission from me) took ownership of MP3s in the browser only. I know how MIME settings work, and I made absolutely sure that QT did not get it's hands on any of my filetypes. However, there is NOT an option to stop it playing MP3s in a browser, and it most definitely happened without my say so.
There clearly isn't an answer to this, I'll either have to put my MP3s in Zips or use some elaborate code to generate a nasty HTML page so that you can (retch) Right Click, Save As. All this because the QuickTime player has made changes that it had absolutely no right to.
Never mind, I'll find another way. But first, I'm uninstalling Quicktime forever.

My forward and back buttons are greyed out after update to Firefox 8. Tried to move to 9 beta, but same behavior. Back and Forward also greyed out in right click menu.
Attempted to fix by updating all plugins and extensions, then disabled all plugins and extensions, and then tried to start in safe mode. Nothing worked. You could have backed up your profile folder. If you did, [[Recovering important data from an old profile]] can help :)

Acrobat 9.31 / Browser Plugin - Printing Color PDF as Black and White?
I have an interesting issue for the masses. For a couple of our users (it encompasses both Windows XP x64 and Windows 7 x64), they are having an issue where when they attempt to print a PDF directly from Acrobat's browser plugin (in this case, IE8 is the browser), and attempt to print a color PDF to a color printer, the PDF comes out in black and white.
Here's some other consistents:
* Printing to a network printer, using the print driver Canon C5180-H1 Ver.2.0JM. The problem spans across two different print servers (we use a different one for XP clients and 7 clients, but the driver is the same)
* When the user clicks on "Print As Image", it does work (but doesn't look quite as good)
* When the user saves the PDF to a file and then opens it in the full Acrobat 9 Pro application, it does work (but this is a bit annoying)
Can anyone suggest some other things I should check and/or reasons that this might be happening? I'm at a total loss to explain it but will happily accept suggestions on ways to fix it.
Thanks!Following up to see if anyone has some solid ideas on how this might be happening.
Thanks!
