Disappearing Frame files during PDF generation

I am running FrameMaker v6.0p405 on Windows XP SP3. I use a FrameScript to generate a book and save it as a PDF. On random occassions, during the generation process Frame displays an error that a file is missing. Upon check of the folder location of the file, the file is gone. This happens randomly... not one specific file or book. I see reference to this problem in the Forum archives and also with a google search with no resolutions.
The FrameMaker files are on a network drive which is backed up using Sonic Wall. Could the backup system be causing this?

Hi, Larry,
We've periodically had folks report that actually saving FM files across a network (as opposed to just copying/moving after the files have been created and saved locally) can cause erratic difficulties, as can an "overactive" backup system, so there may be two culprits at play.
Could your script be modified to save the book & chapters locally and then move it to the network?
Perhaps other folks might chime in with some suggestions.

  • Handle WSDL data connection timeout during PDF generation

I have created in LiveCycle Designer XDP template. In template i defined WSDL Data connection. For data loading i call xfa.connectionSet.WsDataConnection.execute(0).
For PDF generation i created LiveCylce process and use generatePDFOutput component.
If WebService works output service generates document with all data - OK.
If i turn off webservice and run process ouputservice generates PDF document with empty fields. Is where any possibility to raise execption to calling process if WSDL connection timeouts or gives SOAP fault error in response?
I want catch web service errors in process and do not generate PDF if some webservice used in PDF template is not accesible during generation.

    Hi Martin,
We are experiencing the same issue with SAP/Vertex. Can you let me know how you resolve this? Did you change the SAP gateway timeout parameter? If so, which one is it?
Your help on this is greatly appreciated.

I am displaying pdf from my application and when the pdf document is found, it is displaying properly. Only problem is when the document is not found i want to display the jsp with an error message to the user. I am using IE and IE has a bug that it calls the servlet twice to display pdf. Please refer to this forum and IE bug info.

Now during the first call to the Servlet i have set the response ContentType
response.setContentType("application/pdf");I want to change the content type back tp "text/html" before displaying the jsp with the error message. How should i do that. I tried to change the content type by doing response.setContentType("text/html"); in the servlet. But this is not working. I am still getting the same error. which is a diagol box in Acrobat saying "File does not begin with %PDF~"

  • Converting Frame files to PDF adds carriage return in code snippets

Our writing group is using FrameMaker 7.2 with Acrobat 9. The documentation we write includes code snippets. Conversion from Frame to PDF adds a carriage return to the end of any line of code. This causes any snippet containing a wrapped line to be incorrect if it is copied and pasted directly from the PDF.  Does anyone knopw if there's a fix for this?
    Thanks,
    George

    Dear Alexander,
    Thanks for the reply.
In this I am using the FM 'CONVERT_ABAPSPOOLJOB_2_PDF'. I have checked the settings from SPAD that is also same in both servers for particular output device. But the patches are diffrennt in both the servers, the server from which layout is not coming properly having the high level patches in compare to the other server(which is working fine).

  • How to Monitor the size of log file (Log4j) During its Generation.

i have made a program using log4j technology. Now i want to know that is there any method that i can restrict the size of the log file. for example if the size of generating log file exceeds the restricted size then it should be placed in backup and a new file should be automatically generate and remaining contents should be written in that file.
is there any method that can monitor the size of file during the generation of that (say) log file.

  • How can I speed up PDF generation?

I am working on 2 manuals in Frame 10, unstructured. I have installed all the latest FM patches. The smaller manual is 270 pages with 200 graphics inserted by reference. It takes 2.5 hours to "Save as PDF." The larger manual is 500 pages, 250 graphics and takes 3 hours to "Save as PDF".
I have converted graphics to smaller .jpg files. I have freed up as much space on my PC as possible - it has 4GB memory and 300 GB hard drive space available, dual processor with i3 chip. I delete Temp files and reboot before creating PDF.
If I turn off graphics (Esc+v+v), the PDF is created in just a few minutes.
What else can I do to produce a complete PDF with graphics in a reasonable amount of time?

I am a lone writer working on a single PC. No network drives. I open all files in the book before creating PDF.
Many of the graphics are product photos - how to assemble, etc. I was provided with .psd and .jpg versions. Originally inserted the .psd ones, but then consultant advised us to use the .jpg instead. PDF generation is extremely long either way. Also had numerous huge .tif files that I saved to much smaller .jpg.
Manuals will be localized and printed. What type of graphics are advised in this case - for good print quality and efficient PDF generation?

Are the Frame files and/or the imported objects coming from network servers? If so, you might get a speed up by saving to manual to the local machine prior to printing, and printing to PostScript, where the .ps file is on the local machine. Then Distill separately (if you have the full Acrobat product). Distilling separately* at least frees up Frame for that part of the rendering. I have converted graphics to smaller .jpg files. From what? And I wouldn't have bet that using JPEG would help. The files may be smaller, but they still need to be filtered for export to Ps or PDF, and if they are raster, they may be subject to further processing during PDF generation based on the subsampling specified. You might try sending the objects as EPS (which requires minimal processing into Ps), and you might try making sure that raster images are already at the desired dpi, and require no further downsampling in the rendering flow.

  • Help: PDF Generation Problems in Reports 3.0

    Hi Techies,
We are generating PDFs from Oracle Reports 3.0
The PDF generation is fine in some datbases.
But in some database, when the records are more, during PDF

Can any one please clarify whether the error is due to memory
constraints on the system or if it has something to do with

Do note that the reports are running fine, when the report has
    less number of records.
Any suggestion/tip is awaited at the earliest.

  • Disappearing graphics in CMYK PDF output from Frame 12.0.3

(I thought we already had a thread about this, but I can't find it!) - but I've just run into the same problem with Frame 12 that I've read about other people having.
I have Frame 12, fully patched. With a book file selected (and all my chapter files open), I do File > Save as PDF,
choose the settings I want on "PDF Setup for Selected Files" dialog, and off I go.....
Those settings include the CMYK radio button.
I don't get any error messages, but loads of items are missing (blank) in the resulting PDF - mostly graphics, but also some coloured table border, text, all sorts of stuff really.
If I select the RGB radio button instead, everything is present (although I want a CMYK PDF!!)
What is going on? Is CMYK PDF generation just broken in Frame 12?
I seem to recall someone saying an imported .AI graphic was the culprit in their case, but my graphics are mostly all just PNG or PDF.

    > ... corporate branding asks for some text and table borders to be in a Pantone colour, and whilst Frame can pass Pantone colours unchanged into a PDF if you hide them inside an EPS graphic, it can't do it for text or coloured lines.
It's close to a lost cause no matter how you do it, due to FM having deminimus color management.
Pantone colors from Frame end up downstream as just uncalibrated CMYK values, unless the object's color definition is tagged with and accompanied by the "PANTONE 123x" whatever string into the .ps of .pdf workflow (and the target app or system officially supports Pantone, and many RIPs do).
Even so, for end user convenience printing on Windows, the PDF content is still going to pass through the Windows GDI, which, despite furious CMYK handwaving by Mr.Bill's Minions, is still an RGB engine. You say, but the color printers are using CMYK inks! Yep, you get yet another color space conversion if the print path isn't Ps or native PDF.
What we've done is to figure out what the our entity colors are in sRGB space, and do all colors in RGB. BabelColor is a useful app for this task, as are one or more freebie web pages that provide sRGB equivalents for Pantone colors (but usually omit the word "pantone" entirely on their site, lest a rainbow of lawyers descend).
We then tell the distill process to tag images for color management, using IEC 61966-2-1:1999. This actually results in RGB values in EPS files with embedded profiles matching RGB colors generated by Frame (for graphics objects).
Getting Frame TEXT color to match as well aggravates the problem. You can get Distiller (and perhaps PDF rendering settings generally) to "tag everything for color management", but this turns black text into composite black, exploding the file size and slowing printing (and in the specific case of sRGB, is black still really black?). If print is your only target, and you can manage the black issue, this might be a solution (or just use some other color space, like Adobe RGB). Another possibility, where color text is limited, is to import it as EPS text from Illustrator.
There might be aftermarket tools for what's really needed, which is "tag all color objects for color management".
This is an area where some tool other than FM is usually indicated. InDesign has color management. I've never been able to figure out if Frame's ostensible DTP competitor has CM. Frame will never get CM, we are told consistently.

Nothing in the Acrobat 8.x product family is compatible with Windows 7 (or any contemporary OS).
The Acrobat 8.x product family passed into End of Support way back -- (November 2011).
The current release of Acrobat (XI) is compatible in Windows 7.

Created PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, but HELP fields disappear when I save FCDT file to PDF. Please help. Thanks!

I am not aware of a field type "Help" within a PDF form. I do not see it as a form field that can be added in the form edit mode.
Forms Central forms do not support all the features of Acrobat forms.
Are you talking about the "Tool Tips" or a hidden field that only shows when one enters a field and is hidden upon exiting the field.

FM 12: How do I create a .ps file of a book? (errors prevent PDF generation)

There's probably a graphic on one of your pages that is causing a postscript division error (i.e. divide by zero?) See also: PostScript error offending command div
As Jeff suggests, track down the errant graphic to see what's wrong. If you print to file, you should get an idea of roughly where in the docs the error occurs by watching the print thermometer display.

  • Live cycle ES2 can covert Frame maker file into PDF??

    Hi All
    good day!!
I have read that live cycle can covert farme maker files into pdf .
is it true . we are using live cycle ES2 and we are going to upgrade FM 8 (unix) to FM 11 .
can we convert frame maker files into pdf using Live cycle ES2????
    you response highly appiciate!!
    thank you
    ramesh babu

Possibly, but ES2 is only specified to convert FM7.2 & FM8 files. FM11 might work, but you would have to test it and it's most likely not supported by Adobe in this mode. See: http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/pdfgenerator/formats.html
If you only need to create PDF output from existing FM files, then Datazone's DZbatcher or Omni Systems fmbatch (part of the mif2go product) utilities may suffice.

  • One font turns bold and one disappears on export to PDF?

    Hello
Why is it that when I'm export a particular InDesign file to PDF, one frame of text (which has the exact same font and style as other text in the document) ... turns bold?
There is another, different font too, which completely disappears!

Like I said, the entire document uses the exact same font throughout without glitches, so there is no logical reason for a little bit of it (at the bottom of one page) to suddenly just decide to be "bold" when it's set to regular like the rest of the Lucinda GrandE!
The font looks a little tiny bit bold in Indesign, so that must be where the problem began..(but why?)
I included two pictures, as requested. One, shows how it is in InDesign, and the second as it is in the PDF, which appears much bolder.
I didn't have a "pdf export dialogue box", which keeps coming up in my research... just File-->'Document Presets' or 'Adobe PDF presets'
I have mine set to 'print quality'
InDesign (bottom line of text looks bold, but it is set to regular)

PDF (here it looks even bolder)
