Disappearing junk messages

Repeatedly and consistently, over the past several months, upon launching Mail, the message count beside the Junk mail folder will show some number. Upon clicking on the Junk folder, the number will either be reduced by some number or will be wiped to null. It appears as if the Mac thinks there are junk mail messages one minute and then wipes them the next. I'm afraid that this strange behaviour is an indication of a virus. I've searched the message boards but not found anything that resembles this problem.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

It's not a virus. It's not a trojan. There are several trojans for Mac (not "thousands" as there are for a competing platform/architecture) and when they've surfaced for Mac, they've gotten a lot of press, especially from people that use the competing platform/architecture and enjoy dissing ours.
I've seen message count issues with IMAP before but once you activated the applicable mailbox it updates itself to the correct value. Annoying, and I don't recall whether rebuilding the mailbox fixed it or not (Mail menubar > Mailbox > Rebuild), as I haven't had this bother me since upgrading to Leopard. Don't have POP accounts so can't speak to that.
Highlight individual account inboxes, junk box, etc., in order to rebuild. Can't do multiple accounts or multiple folders at the same time, have to do them one folder at a time.

  • Mail not saving sent messages, not moving Junk messages

Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of trouble with OS Mail. I've set it up to use an IMAP account, and have set my preferences such that Mail should save all my sent messages in the Sent folder (I assume the Sent folder on my computer, not the one on my IMAP server). Regardless, neither my IMAP server's sent folder nor my computer's sent folder contain any messages that I've sent, and I have confirmed that these messages have in fact been received by the recipients (therefore successfully sent). I am unsure of how to resolve this issue, as there is no obvious setting change for me to persue. I just received this computer (new) a few days ago, so I wouldn't expect this problem to be due to disk maintenance/management, etc.
Also, I have noticed that Junk messages remain highlighted and in my inbox. I changed my prefs to have these messages be placed in my Junk Mail folder. Mail asked me whether I wanted to apply that preference to older messages marked as junk that have yet to be put in the folder; I indicated yes. Nothing happened, and the Junk Mail folder remained empty (until I manually moved the messages to it). Any ideas?
I have searched the forums for related issues and could only find problems that had an associated error message with it; my issue is different in that there are no error messages; Mail is simply ignoring my preferences. Thanks in advance,
    Vic

In OS X Mail, this sent folder appears as a subdirectory
(sub "mailbox"?) under my "Inbox" mailbox along with
other folders that are mapped on my IMAP account.
This means you haven't set up your account properly. You probably should set Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix to INBOX, or something like that.
After putting the right string in the IMAP Path Prefix field, either the IMAP folders will appear somewhere else in Mail (i.e. not as subfolders of Inbox), or your problem will have already been fixed. Let me know what happens.
I should probably mention (just realized) that in my
account settings, my outgoing SMTP server is set to
be my ISP's server (which is different from my IMAP
    provider).
I wonder if, by selecting "save messages on server"
I am saving these messages somewhere on my ISP?
Mail should still save the sent messages where you've told it to. It's Mail, not the SMTP server, that stores the sent messages. The SMTP server has no bearing on this, but it was a good idea to consider that possibility, nevertheless.
When I uncheck this option, perhaps my mail will
be stored on my local computer instead?
Yes, that's what would happen, but don't uncheck that option if you really want your sent messages to be stored on the IMAP server, or do it temporarily, so that Mail does at least save them somewhere until we fix the problem, but I believe I already know what the problem is.

  • TS5185 Hi After I have report a junk message I coudl not get Imessge from other iphone. and could not send any message in blue color but green which need to pay for.

Hi After I have report a junk message to 7726, I coudl not get Imessge from other iphones. and could not send any message in blue color but green which need to pay for. Does Apple blocked my imessage ? I have checked the setting. imessage is on.
    Thanks,

Make sure that your date and time settings and time zone are accurate (Settings - General - Date and Time). Reset your phone to 'Set Automatically' and then try signing in again - this worked for me.  My date/time settings were not automatic (candy crush cheats!!).

  • Adware - does it exist on a Mac? - Too many junk messages

I'm trying to find out if it's possible that adware exists on a mac. It seems as though if I leave Mail open, I get an influx of junk messages. How do I find out if this nasty thing exists? How do you get rid of it?

I have three accounts in "Mail". My main source of mail is with my Mac Account. My two other accounts are: One with my ISP (Bresnan Cable), and the other is with gmail.
I have never gotten junk (spam) in my Mac Account or my gmail account. I used to get about thirty or more junk messages every day in my ISP Account until I went to their web mail site and I changed my preferences to "only accept mail from a list". A list that I made from my address book and previous recipients. Now, I do NOT get any junk mail - fingers crossed!
A suggestion: Do not fill out surveys on the internet! That usually starts a chain reaction of spam.

  • I keep getting the same junk messages and can't get rid of them permanently. Any suggestions?

Please help - I keep getting the same junk messages and can't delete them permanently. Same thing happens in the Trash folder. Anyone have suggestions?

  • It stopped sending mail and moving messages between folders, junk messages stopped being moved.

Recently, Thunderbird stopped sending mail and moving messages between folders, junk messages stopped being moved.

Further notes (different user, same problem):
    * This is a problem that started in Thunderbird 32
    * This involves both automatic (filter) moves and manual moves
    * This includes use of keys and hotkeys (the delete key, for example)
    * Restarting Thunderbird does seem to "reset" the problem... for a while. I notice the problem most when either I've been away from the computer/program for a while or when waking a laptop computer from a sleep or hibernation state.

  • How to not "read" Junk Messages In Lion Mail?

In the new setup in Lion Mail, the left column now has the subject line and first couple lines of the message.
To create any kind of action with the message, I have to select it.  It then appears on the right and is seen as opened mail.
For most messages, this is okay, but for junk mailing (foreign entitities wanting money etc.), I don't want to open it but I do want to delete it.
Does anyone know how I can delete without "selecting" the message and automatically opening it or do I just have to use the alternate older view of Mail that is provided?

I second this... Some emails I don't want to see at all. (i.e. Prince SoNSo has left me a gazillion dollars, all I have to do is reply...) Is there and edit button in the new mail as similar to the one used on portables?

  • Disappearing GMail messages with Apple Mail for iPad

I'm using Mail for iPad to access my GMail account. When I organize messages into different folders using Mail, I often find that some of those messages simply disappear, unless I search for them. This happens regardless of when they were sent (they're not older messages cached on the server).
As an example, a message I received Sunday was placed in a folder. When scrolling back through that folder, the message does *not* appear anywhere, not between the Monday and Saturday messages. However, if I search for that sender, the message *does* appear and says it was received on Sunday, as it was.
I wish I understood why this is happening, as it doesn't seem to make much sense. Thanks for any help!

I have each device to leave message on the server.  We have it set up this way so that my wife and I can see all the mail that comes into our own devices.  Then we can delete off each device as desired.  I go in to the server once a month and delete old mail.
So to recap:  My wife's macpro uses apple mail.  it retrieves the mail from the server; but leaves it on the server.  However, though the email is still on the server, the other devices cannot retrieve the email.  it is like the email is old email that your device has already uploaded; but it hasn't uploaded to the other devices because my wife's mac opens the inbox on server first.
I know that this sounds confusing.  it did not always work this way.  for a long time any of our devices could open the inbox on the server, retrieve the messages and leave the email on the server inbox for the other devices.  this issue is new.

  • Scrollbar disappears; error messages when quitting

This latest version (3.0.4) of Safari is buggy. I'd appreciate any suggestions:
    1) My scrollbar periodically disappears. I have to quit Safari to have it reappear again. Someone suggested that it might be because I have Acrobat Reader installed on my machine. But I never had this problem before this version emerged from buggysville.
    2) When I quit this version of Safari, I sometimes get an error message saying it quit "unexpectedly." It doesn't interfere with my functionality, since I already quit Safari, but it's annoying nonetheless. Any suggestions?

If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard widgets etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.0.4.
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the latest Java update.

  • Z3 / Z3 Compact Chat service disappeared in Messaging App

Hi there. Since the latest lolly update, the "chat service" has disappeared as an option from the stock messaging app. The one where your texts were coloured yellow if they were being sent over the internet rather than an SMS. This is very frustrating, as I was just extolling the virtues of this feature to my wife who has the Z3C, I have the Z3. She raves about What'sApp you see. Now "Chat" is gone! It's not even in the settings menu as "enable chat service" anymore... Have deleted data from app etc to no avail. Any ideas folks? Many thanks. It has gone from both our 'phones BTW.

OK, the version of the Messaging app we both have is 28.1.A.1.4. Wife's Z3C still shows SMS after each text, and settings screen shown the Chat Service options. Mine doesn't! Here, have a look...

  • Disappearing outgoing messages?

I seem to have a problem with my iPad and iPhone, iPad 1 and iPhone 3GS, both running 4.3.2.  I can receive and usually send messages ok, but sometimes when I press 'send' the message just disappears.  Not saved in outgoing, drafts or anywhere.  I have not been able to identify when this happens, because it is not frequent (nor is my use of my iPad or iPhone to send messages), but surely if there is a network problem then the message should be stored for later transmission in an outgoing mailbox.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Really appreciate your assistance! My hosting people are being no help at all. I'm very familiar with "edit server list" - have been there often. It is my hosting person who tells me their logs show that none of the various emails I failed to receive on the first sending - for which I expand the headings and forwarded to him - have ever reach their server and therefore something's going wrong "out there" and they're not responsible. He even just suggested I sign up with gmail for my email service since I've been so much trouble to him. I've had an email address on my own server for ten years now - [email protected] - and don't want to change it!
I corrected the terrible instructions I got from AppleCare and reversed my incoming and outgoing server settings to audaud.com for regular email and to mail.aracnet.com SMPT for my two personal email addresses I want to send thru Aracnet. (and am paying them to forward them to the audaud.com server). However, when I just tried to reply to an email I received to [email protected] I got a warning I never saw before: (Thought I could attach a screenshot of it but can't seem to) It says "cannot send the message using the server audaud.com." Yet a few minutes later I sent an email to several of the writers for my site and it was sent. The settings were the same!
My hosting people told me to use Port 26 for sending but they refuse to tell me which port to use for INCOMING mail (using POP). Maybe the port settings are fouling me up, but why do they cause problems only part of the time? I don't use SSL.
Doesn't everyone receive via their email client "all the emails that get to the server?" Again: any directions on deleting the non-working import of the Eudora Address Book and doing it again properly with Eudora Mailbox cleaner?

  • Disappearing sent messages

    Dear all,
I have had .Mac e-mails intermittently fail to appear in the Sent mailbox after sending them. My desktop Apple Mail client is configured to save sent messages.
While I have not done a systematic study of the problem, the issue seems to occur when the e-mails contain file attachments.
Has anybody else encountered this difficulty? It seems to have started after Apple upgraded their .Mac services, although I reinstalled my system around that time, so it's anybody's guess as to what happened.
    Many thanks in advance!

    Greetings,
You should try rebuilding your Mail index:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Got o Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file, and remove the folders for your three IMAP accounts.
    3. Restart Mail and wait for the index to rebuild and for Mail to download your mail again.
    4. Check to see if the problem remains.
If the problem is solved and all your mail is intact, you can delete the IMAP account folders you removed earlier.

  • My songs disappeared- get message "could not be used because original file could not be found?

how can I access my songs?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Mail issues--disappearing outgoing message text and...

OK ... I am just a bit irritated. I have encountered a few problems lately with Mail where it acts as if the smtp server I use won't accept the connection and/or password (that is 100% correct). Sometimes the problem goes away on its own. But that was just what led to my primary problem today is.
I put together a rather lengthy email - took about 30 minutes to compose, that was of some importance. I click send...
After about a minute, I see the problem above telling me to pick a different outgoing mail server. Ummm.. no. The smtp server is working fine, and I tested it on another machine to be sure. So back to my iBook. I click "try again later".
Well, it tries again a bit later - and get the same notice. But I also see something about my email has changed --- it is BLANK! All of that work - gone. I did not edit it, nor did I delete the email's content myself. It somehow vanished into oblivion when it was sitting waiting to try again. I didn't even use this machine in the time in between.
I'm none too happy. Is this a new Microsoft-like "feature"? I know, I'm being sarcastic - but I am a bit frustrated. I switched to Apple Mail from MS Entourage because I was trying to walk away from MS software. It seems that the problems I have been having with Mail (and also Safari) have cropped up after the last few security updates and application updates.

    Hi Michael,
