Disc Drive Mounting Problem causing haywire issues...

I've been having an issue that has gotten progressively worse and would appreciate the community's experience to figure it out...
I repair the disk permissions regularly, keeps things backed up and updated...sourcing what the actual problem could help me figure out if it's a preferences issue or something more to the core of my OS that would require a clean install...so here's what I know.
Originally a few smaller applications (such as firefox and a media server app) started to hang, eventually freezing the computer. Mounting and ejecting external drives started to hang as well. If I went to restart or shutdown, the process would hang until I pulled out the firewire cables of my external drives. That seems to be the real heart of it, as soon as I pull out the external drives it has no issue. Anyone heard of that or know which core file I would need to replace?

By pulling the cable on your external disks while they are still being used you have probably corrupted them to the point where they are cause you problems. My starting point to fix your system would be to repair your disks including the system disk. I am not talking about repairing permission here. I am talking about repairing the directory structure for them. To do the system disk you need to boot from another disk. I suggest booting from the install DVD for you Mac. Let us know the results of that.

  • Weir drive mounting problem

I am posting here because I have the same problem in two identical duel G5 towers running OS 10.5.7, so it's not a hardware issue, I don't think.
When I install a second SATA had drive into the second bay it will not mount at start up, nor is it visible to disk utility. I have tested with 4 different drives with GUID and AFP.
I have reset the PRAM, but did not help.
    Any ideas gratefully accepted.
    Thanks,

"Repair Disk Permissions" from Disk Utility may help.
Also, cmd-opt-n-v (Clear NV RAM) may help as well.

  • CD Stuck in iMac Disc Drive, Mechanical Problem

I, surprisingly, could not find a good solution for this on Google because of the vast number of people with software-related disc jams and bad tutorials.
I put a Windows 2000 recovery disc in my Mac so I could test to see if I could make a disk image from it and mount it as a real CD...anyway, I should have known that the HP-made disc would get stuck in my drive. It felt kind of strange as if it was the wrong thickness.
Now, I cannot eject it nor can I see the disc trying to be ejected due to the flaps on the drive blocking it. I tried feeling around with a credit card, but there was a metal bar blocking the disc. If I try to eject it, it keeps trying over and over again but can never eject it.
I'm looking for a hardware-related way to get this out. I know about the "click on bootup" and "force eject" methods, but those will not work.

I can't recall exactly what I did to make the credit card work that first time. About 1/3 the way from the edge of the slot (top of the slot on my iMac), you can feel some mechanism that's closed normally. When you go to eject the disc you can feel that mechanism open and you can hold it open using the card. I recall it took a lot of fiddling to get the thing to pop out, so I can't say exactly what I did. You can try to use the card to sort of coax the disc out or push it up or down, depending on which way it's having trouble ejecting...
Sometimes you can see the disc poke out a little only to do back in. In those times I've thought about getting a pair of tweezers to grab it, but usually didn't end up having to. Could be a two-person job.
If nothing works, before taking it to a shop I'd try opening the bezel. I don't know how or why but that really did the trick for me last time I went through this.

  • [Solved]IDE Drive mounting problem.

Hey all, I've got an annoying problem with one of my IDE drives.
Basically I just can't get it to mount, during boot up I get a few errors:
    end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 0
    ata2: EH complete
    unable to read partition table
Corrupt partition table, simple enough? I wish. I can mount the drive without error in both my Windows and Ubuntu 7.10 install. Which leads me to think it dislikes using the PATA driver or whatever the change was in later kernels.
The really puzzling part is that I can wipe the drive and create a new partition with parted, then mount it manually and copy data to it. But as soon as I reboot I am back the start, getting I/O errors and can't mount.
A couple of guys on IRC were saying to rmmod the pata drivers and modprobe the ide ones, but I have no experience with either of those functions. And from what I can see there is like 15 different IDE drives I could choose from, so have no idea what I should be doing.
    Any help is appreciated.

Well as insane as this seems to me, removing the jumper on drive and making it cable select fixed it...

  • External hard drive mounting problems :(

I've been using a Western Digital My Book Pro 500GB drive on my G4 (mirror door) with OS X 10.4.8 via FireWire 400 for a long time now, works great. It looks like this:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=242
When I try to connect it to my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.4.6) via FireWire 400 or USB 2.0, it recognizes the drive, even mounts it (according to Disk Utility), but it does not show up in Finder. It's totally unusable. The icon in disk utility when the drive is mounted, is not a drive icon. It's just like a blank document icon. When I unmount the drive, it shows the drive icon.
It also does not connect to my wife's PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.8.
    What I've tried:
    - I've tried connecting the drive via USB and Firewire
    - I've tried shutting down the laptops, and re-booting.
    - I've tried zapping the PRAM on them while booting back up.
    - I've tried shutting down the hard drive, turning the drive on, waiting, and then connecting the drives again.
    - I've tried to access the drive via terminal, and it does not allow me to CD into the drive. It says "permission denied"
    - I've tried verifying the disk
    - I've tried repairing the disk.
    - I've tried Disk Rescue II 1.1 (which allows me to "recover files" but it's a lengthy process, esp for 250GB I have on it, that you have to restore to another hard drive)
Is this a permissions problem? I don't get how come it works with one of my Macs flawlessly, but the other two doesn't allow me access to it.
MacBook Pro Core Duo, G4 PowerMac, PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry, so much I forgot to include that I've done. I forgot some people are dumb and don't use A/C adapters or use FAT32 drives on there Macs.
I re-formatted it a long time ago using Disk Utility Mac OS X Extended Journaled on my G4 Tower (mirror drive door) with Apple Parition Map. I didn't zero it out, but it was brand new FAT32 drive from Western Digital, and nothing was on it when I reformated it to HFS.
I didn't think the problem was Intel chip related, since it doesn't work on the G4 PowerBook either. I'm unfamiliar with GUID parition map vs APL.
Can Intel Macs read off an APL external drive OK?
I'll look into Disk Warrior and see what it thinks.

  • CD/DVD drive mount problems

for some reason Arch refuses to see/mount my CD/DVD drive, I have a Sony PCG-F350 laptop (PII 366, 192 Ram, CD/DVD combo drive), I think I have the fstab configured properly, any suggestions?
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cd iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/floppy/0 /mnt/fl vfat user,noauto 0 0
    /dev/discs/disc0/part2 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/discs/disc0/part1 / reiserfs defaults,noatime 0 0
And thanks in advance, you guys are always a great help!

    Simply create /mnt/cd yourself...
sudo mkdir /mnt/cd (or use root console instead of sudo).
    Also, replace the fstab lines
    /dev/cdroms/cdrom0     /mnt/cd   iso9660   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    /dev/cdroms/cdrom0     /mnt/dvd  udf       ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    with
    /dev/cdroms/cdrom0     /mnt/cd   auto   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
or even, if you use udev and not devfs,
    /dev/hdb    /mnt/cd   auto   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
or, if you use udev/dbus/hal at startup, delete the lines completely and let fstab-sync autocreate them (the new mount point will be under /media ).

  • Installing itunes on my pc using windows 7 makes the disc drives disappear

does anyone have a fix for this? I'm using a pc with windows 7, used to be able to uninstall itunes and the drives would reappear, now that doesn't work so I have no disc drives. Have tried everything (my computer friend has, for me) including a new disc drive - same problem. AM ready to buy a new computer, but searches indicate the problem may occur with a new computer as well.

Click here and follow the instructions.

  • How to create a virtual disc drive?

I need to get my computer to treat an ISO image as if it's a physical optical drive. I've tried mounting it via loop devices, which is very useful, but it's not enough (basically, I need programs to be able to find it as a device, not a mounted filesystem). Any ideas?

You could create an empty file with dd like this:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=disk-image count=40960
That will create a 20 MB file
Then you can format it with a file system:
    /sbin/mkfs -t ext3 -q disk-image
Tell it to proceed even if it is not a block specific device.
Mount it and you have a virtual disc drive.
    mount -o loop disk-image fs
    I borrowed this from here:

  • Disc drive causing problems

I've recently bought an iBook and have noticed that the disc drive is scratching the top of the discs when ejected. Has anyone else had this problem and is it something worth getting back to Apple about?

    Hi Emma,
    Welcome to the discussions.
You have posted in a section that is for the "Clamshell" type iBooks (G3). It might be better for you to post your issue in the iBook G4 section. That way you have a greater chance of someone more familiar with your model of iBook seeing your issue and responding to it.
    Cheers!

  • When connected via USB, my Ipod Classic 160GB mounts as a disc drive, then changes to a white drive.  When iTunes automatically opens, it crashes trying to mount and/ or sync.  When it times out, my only choice is to restore, but that doesn't fix problem.

I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 3.06 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.   I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5.2.  I'm not sure when the trouble started but I attempted a restore when the iPod would not play correctly.  It would start to play a file and get stuck on 0 seconds.  If I put the iPod on shufle, it will stall on 0 seconds for 15 seconds or so and then move on to the next track and stall again and so on.   Seemingly randomly, it will play a few tracks but eventually start skipping again.  This will continue until the battery is depleted which is fairly quick since the drive is constantly spinning.
My 160GB iPod Classic after restore attempts now is up to date with 2.0.4. and of course, nothing works as it should and I would say the skipping issue is worse than ever.
When I connect with any of three USB connectors, the iPod mounts to the desktop as a grey/silver disk drive picon exactly like the Macintosh HD picon.   Then Finder will stall for a few minutes- spinning pinwheel.  Somehow, the dock is never affected and I am able to open other applications like Safari or tab through open windows- just no action on the desktop.  Eventually, iTunes automatically opens and Finder becomes responsive again.  At this point the grey drive picon on the desktop becomes a white drive mount picon, but the iPod does not mount in iTunes, yet.  At some point, the iPod attempts to sync, iTunes crashes with the spinning pinwheel and eventually times out and I am prompted to restore the iPod again.  Once restored,  the iPod properly mounts under devices in iTunes and, as I have done this several times, even occasionally changes to the regular iPod picon on the desktop.
I have restored several times going as far a completely deleting iTunes from my iMac, downloading the latest directly from Apple.com, and attempting to restore again, but to no avail.
I have even used the disk utility to verify and/or repair my Macintosh HD and iPod.
It seems lots of folks are going through this ordeal.  Has anyone had any success in fixing the issue, even if only temporarily?

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Disc Drive Problem

    Hi guys,
I got a problem with my macbook pro disc drive. I accidentally changed the Dvd Region Code five times and now I only can play American Dvd's anymore and no European ones. And I was told that the only way to correct this problem would be by replacing the disc drive. Does anyone know how much that averagely costs?
    Thanks

You might also try a Yahoo/Google search as there may be a "hack" you might be able to use, otherwise an Apple Super Drive is around $75 (US) or you can get a 3rd party one for around $35 (US).
Just do a search for the best reviews and compatibilities of the drive you purchase.
Depending on what year/model you have there may be another issue of accessing it to remove/replace it.
By the way the MacBookPro forums are here.

  • I replaced my hard drive and used time machine to boot from but it installedthe unrepaired disk permissions of the faulty previous drive would this cause problems on my new drive?

I replaced my hard drive on macbook pro and used time machine to boot from but it also installed the unrepaired disk permmissions of the other drive, would this cause problems to my new drive?

Can you remember what the permissions problem was that you had before? You may need to reinstall OS X from scratch and not reinstall anything from your Time Machine backups. To be on the safe side you should reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, as well. Then only restore from your backup your document/data files.

  • CD/DVD Disc Drive Issues

I'm having trouble with my CD/DVD disc drive.. it won't load a disc, CD nor DVD. I put it in the slot, but it doesn't catch and get pulled in. Has anyone experienced this problem and found a fix? I'm hoping that the motor isn't dead!
    Thanks,

It may just be time to replace your SuperDrive. Take it into an Apple Store for diagnostics and if they tell you that the SD has bitten the bullet (which they do sometimes) then you should have it replaced.
    Sorry,

  • SL won't mount via USB disc drive

    Hi there
I am desperate to load SL. My internal disc drive is broken so I use a Ritmo external trouble is I pop in the SL disc and it does not recognize there is a disc there. I have popped in other discs with no problems... tried to find it through disc utility not there.... I copied the SL disc on my PC to a thumb drive and popped it in but the format did not work..... how am I going to get SL onto my Macbook! Any help appreciated......

One way are another you are going to need to find a Mac that will read the disk. If you can gain access to an appropriately equipped Mac or PC for each, then you still have these install options:
    1. Use [firewire target disk mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661].
    2. Use the [remote install method|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/21219.html].
    3. Clone the installer DVD to an external drive; attach it to your machine; and install using the clone.

  • After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted. Anybody else with this major problem?

After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted.
I have tried resetting my Mac's PRAM but the problem still remains.
Even USB memory sticks are unmounted efter a few seconds.
Anybody else with this major problem?

I have the same problem, although mine has not been solved by ESET update, finder settings, PRAM & SMC resets or anything else.
Don't get it, my external hard drive still works on both my housemates computers - one macbook pro (with snow leopard) and one dell, just not on mine with mountain lion.
    Any ideas for me guys?
