Disc Permissions for Vista (Boot Camp)

Hello everyone.
I installed Vista using Boot Camp today (I know, it's Vista, but oh well). Everything went well when I installed everything. Vista actually runs quite nice. However, I want to transfer files from my Mac HD to my Windows HD partition. So, in Leopard, I try to drag and drop files to the partition, but it does not allow me to do so because of disc permissions on the Windows HD. The permissions are set to 'read only'. Is there anyway I can change this in Vista or Leopard? I have googled and tried everything in regards to permissions and access controls, however everything only affects 'Sharing' (for example, it will let me do it over a network from another computer, but it won't let me transfer files over the partition on my iMac).
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciate. Thank you so much!

Well, how do you want to change the Windows drive on your Mac desktop? renaming it? deleting it?
You won't be able to write to the Windows drive if it's formatted NFTS. There are third party applications like

that will allow you to write to your NFTS formatted volume.

I think it depends on the OSX version. Leopard (10.5) has the first bootcamp software and is compatible with a G4 most of the time. The problem is that you cannot install windows on a G4. You would probably have to bootcamp linux or something like that. A non- intel mac will not allow you to install windows via bootcamp. Only a VM solution compatible with the G4 could allow you to run XP as a virtual machine. It would be far slower than a bootcamp install.

Driver issue FIXED in Vista / boot camp with new, unibody macbook pro!!

Hay people, I found a fix for the freezing issues with Vista running in Boot camp with the new, unibody Macbook pros. The driver for the 9600M Gt is no good if you install it from the Apple 2.1 version driver disc (Mac osx disc)for some (most) of us.
I needed to go to Nvidia's site and download the one from DECEMBER 08. If you click the "download drivers" tab on the site, scroll past the current driver it wants you to look at (go to the near bottom of page), click the archives, and input your OS version. Also input "Gforce" and "M" series when needed. It will give you a choice of two drivers. DO NOT CHOOSE THE FEB 09 Driver. Thats the BAD driver for most of us. Choose the DECEMBER 08 driver. Download and enjoy. Be sure to roll back the VGA driver (or the current driver) first before you install this. It should work.
I've been through the ringer with this for weeks now and have even tried to take my MBP back to swap for a new one. Apple wont have any of that so I thought I was SOL. Not quite. This DOES work for me with Vista. It also works for Windows & if you have it handy.
By the way, I am posting this for people who HAVE HAD THE FREEZING problems, not for people who haven't. Apparently there are some out there who are running Vista just fine on their unibody MBS's. Most of us are not.

This never worked. I sold that machine and got a new 17" unibody. IT, by the way, works just fine. I KNEW it was that **** 15'. It took 30 more seconds to boot up I found out also.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter not working under Vista (Boot Camp).

I'm facing a very serious issue with MacBook Pro Unibody running MS Vista under Boot Camp: using the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter to hook a projector is 95% impossible because the only resolution available is 640x480 or sometimes 800x600. No solution came from the adaptor firmware update, still same behavior: connecting the external projector/monitor toggles 640x480 resolution with no more choices available. Just 5% of attempts on selected projectors gave me access to the complete resolutions list.
This is having a serious impact on my job where I do need both Mac&Windows running natively and with external display capabilities, please I'm looking for some feedback from users facing the same problem or someone who had an official answer on this issue from Apple. Do avoid posting about using modded display drivers please: I know they exist but the adaptor should be working with original ones.
I can understand Apple does not support MS Vista issues but this seems to be a hardware/driver one.
I'd like to point out I'm using a clean Vista installation with Apple drivers (from the Leopard DVD) and I've run Vista (same version, same gfx drivers etc) under Boot Camp on my previous MPB (with integrated DVI output+adapter) on hundreds of different projectors with never a single problem.

I'm having the same problem. When I try to connect to the switch in our conference room (connecting both a flat panel display and/or a projector, both with much higher native resolutions), all I get is 640x480. This is a huge problem to using bootcamp, and I really need to get this to work. I was able to get a higher resolution 1280x800 on a separate, portable display, so I'm wondering if people have the problem with standalone projectors or only with projectors connected to some sort of switch, in my case an Extron MPX423A. I have also tried this in both Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows 7 RC1 (32-bit), with the bootcamp drivers and the latest NVidia drivers, and the behavior is the same all around.

I just recently purchased a macbook air ( 1.86, 128gb ssd) and I've been extremely happy with it. I was wondering if people have noticed that the fan is always running when using Vista but not in OS X?
Is there a solution?

I have the same machine with Vista running via Boot Camp and Fusion. Although the fan does run more frequently than when running Mac o/s, it certainly doesn't run "all the time" as you report.
Note, however, that I only use Vista for occasional browsing with Explorer and to run one app for which there is no Mac alternative; could be that it's the app you're running that makes the fan more active?

Windows Vista Boot Camp - No Audio (sound)

Hi Guys,
I just got my father's Macbook Pro he bought last year for christmas, and I was already excited how I could actually have both Mac and Windows on one laptop (as I need Windows for making music in Fl Studio). Now the problem is, that there is no Sound coming out of the MBP when in Windows, and there is the infamous red light coming out of the Headphones Jack. I'll explain everything I did in steps so that you get the idea. So first of all, I started with the Bootcamp Partition and Installation. Since I lost my Mac OS X (or tbh my father lost it ) I was happy to see that I could actually download the 'support software a.k.a. Drivers' directly before the installation. Well, guess what, It didn't work because the 'support software was not available'. Anyways, I proceeded with the Installation as if I had the CD and Drivers ready. Everything went fine, after booting to Windows I installed Bootcamp and the drivers (Since I found someone posting the .Iso file of the contents of the MAC OS X CD I lost, so I downloaded it.), I was excited to see that every button on the keyboard worked and also the trackpad worked almost flawlessly.Now after the Installation, I did some Windows updates, and then I wanted to listen to some Music, and suddenly I realized that my Sound isn't working! And the Jack started to Glow Red.
So I went online, in search of the problem. I found various 'fixes' for the problem, such as installing a Cirrus Driver (well that didn't work, as it said that my windows is in Slovak and that's not a supported language... what the ****?), then I tried to install Realtek Drivers - didn't do anything (although I didn't uninstall the old ones, because I wasn't sure how exactly to do that.)... Well I think it might be helpful if I'll just summarize what 'fixes' I tried:
Update to Boot Camp 3.1 - Didn't work
Update to Service Pack 1 or later. - Updating to Service Pack 1 and then 2 got rid of the red light, when there is no sound output, as soon as I try to play something it's back on, glowing like a Christmas Tree
Try to wiggle a toothpick in the headphone jack - amazing fix, isn't it? Well I actually found out that It worked for some people, and since I'm desperate, I tried it... As expected, it didn't work.
Install Realtek Drivers - as mentioned above, didn't work...
Install Cirrus Drivers - Slovak Language not 'supported'... right.
Update Boot Camp to latest update - Didn't Work...
Install a 32 Bit Version of Windows - I didn't mention this, I had first a 64 bit version of Windows 7 Installed, and the sound didn't work as well. As there was some problem with the Boot Camp installation, I tried to reinstall to 32 Bit, But used Windows Vista instead, because I heard Windows 7 Is 'not yet supported' or something..
Make sure the Speakers are 'preset' as a default device in the Sounds Control Panel - It Already was preset -.-
'Rage Plug' the computer and hope for the best...? Yeah.
Can anyone finally tell me how to fix this, I am desperate, tired, angry and all the other negative emotions you can imagine right no, because I spent hours on this, looking up millions of forums, in which there was no answer for me!!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have to download the drivers. To download them, press X key while your Mac is starting to start into Mac OS X, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the steps to download them. You will have to burn them onto a DVD or USB drive, so you will be able to install the drivers on Windows. Then, it should work fine.
If you can't download them in Boot Camp Assistant, download the drivers from this website > http://www.cafe-encounter.net/p682/download-bootcamp-drivers The links are from Apple and that's safe to download and install

Windows Vista Boot camp will not show video card

Im running a macbook pro in windows vista 32 bit boot camp mode. Every thing works fine except that the device manager only shows the VGA adapter and not the Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT I have equiped. I cant find any drivers for this card. Is there any way to get Vista to use it properly?

IMac 24" Vista Boot Camp Video Display Problems

Just recently, as of Christmas 2007, I have had a new alumninum 24" iMac. Great machine! One annoying problem (really annoying) is under Boot Camp's Vista OS. I have a valid Vista Home Edition installed and operating quite fine.
Here is the issue:
After running in the Vista partition for more than an hour unattended (screensaver is set to blank or any other), the display is all distorted and wavy.
I have seen people mentioning video issues, and I have reinstalled Leopard BootCamp drivers, manually installed drivers as advised by others on this forum, yet nothing works. I keep getting the same ol' problem.
To explain in more detail: The screen is very pixelated and color gradients (i.e. standard Windows Vista wallpaper looks like an ugly histogram graph). When it's usually very smooth gradients of color, it's very sharp and distinct "smearing" appearance. Text and icons look terrible too!
As any tech support person would say: "Just reboot!"
Sure, rebooting clears the issue and it looks great again. Just give it an hour or two and the same ugly discoloration is back.
Anyone out there having issues with this in Vista? Of course Apple really promoted their new iMacs to run Windows under bootcamp (but they won't support it). Poor marketing if you asked me (it is their hardware).
Under the Leopard partition, I have not seen any issues with this display resolution. Leads me to believe it is for sure a windows driver issue. I have fiddled with just about all of the ATI Radeon HD drivers but cannot come up with a solution.
Any help, or updates on the drivers that may solve this would be greatly appreciated.

So, after three days with new drivers, I may have found an ATI driver package that might be working.
Here is what I downloaded and installed:

I installed the package and by default set the ATI graphics card driver as an "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT" - so far so good!
I will keep you updated if this ends up not working, but so far no smearing screens and gradient issues within Vista (32-bit) Home Edition on my iMac.
Just thought I would share - again, Apple was unable to help. On my own.

OSX not listed in Vista Boot Camp Control Panel as a Startup Disk

When I go to the Boot Camp Control Panel in Vista, OSX is not listed as a startup disk option, only Windows is. Also if I right click the Boot Camp icon in the tray and choose "Restart in MAC OS X" that does not work.
Vista Ultimate is installed on a separate physical disk on my Mac Pro. In OS X both operating systems show up as target disks. Both show up as an option when I hold the option key when rebooting.
AppleCare had me re-install BootCamp in vista from the OSX cd and then run the Apple Check for Updates program (none found). This had no effect.
So this mainly just an inconvenience. This inconvenience prevents me from using non apple keyboards as they don't have an option key or enable be to program the keyboard to the same. And since I have some minor apple blue tooth keyboard/mouse problems under Vista, I would like to be able to use another keyboard/mouse.

I have the same problem not seeing OS X as a startup or restart option in Boot Camp. I'm using Vista 64 in Boot Camp on a 2008 Mac Pro.

A weird Vista/Boot Camp issue

OK, this one seems backwards to me. My XP Boot Camp installation failed after 4 months of relatively trouble free operation. Parallels started flaking out about a month ago, so I started to use Fusion. Long story short, I blew away the partition and installed Vista Enterprise instead. All seemed to go well, and I successfully set up the Parallels VM using the Boot Camp partition. However, I can no longer boot into Boot Camp Vista. It hangs every time at the dotted progress line (or whatever it's called). I've tried repairs via the Boot Camp install process and have reinstalled the Boot Camp Drivers - to no avail. The strange thing is that I am still able to get into the Vista partition using Parallels. In fact, it works great! What would cause the Boot Camp startup to fail that wouldn't also affect Parallels? Very perplexing.
I used to be a Mac hater, then I softened up and accepted them. Now, I hate PCs and Macs. One is just as frustrating as the other.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ask or look on Parallels forum.
The upgrade to Leopard and BootCamp 2.0 has bitten more than a couple, almost "out of the blue" just like you.
Vista Recovery Console or Environment would be one. Boot from Vista DVD and see if it can repair the partition.
The latest Parallels for Leopard are pretty much "test this for us" in some cases.
There are problems with Fusion 1.1 (beta) along with Leopard, too. I don't like the way Fusion degraded my BootCamp graphics (Nvidia Vista 64-bit) to "generic" and some other issues so I am waiting for these VMs to mature.
Also, I'm guessing that there aren't a lot of people using Enterprise or that have access to it. Business and Ultimate, yes. And Apple doesn't officially support x64 (though it seemed to install better this time around).
Don't beta test or adopt a new OS or anything.
I keep Vista on its own drive and it works quite well (user error: installed Norton SystemWorks).
XP failed. Parallels flaked out. Fusion died an early death. All have some common elements.

Would it be possible to run MS Windows VIsta with Boot Camp? or we will be only able to Install XP SP2. Thanks!

Not sure if Boot Camp works yet, but those enterprising coders narfa and blink over at OSx86 Project have got Vista Working with their XOM (XP On Mac) solution (http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/12/boot-camp-can-run-vista-too/)
Shouldn't therefore be too hard to make it work with Boot Camp.

I/O errors with some discs in XP with Boot Camp Please help.

I wasn't sure which forum to post this problem in. I've also asked this question in "Using your Intel-based iMac". It fits in a few categories, so I apologize if I've gotten it wrong.
I tried to install a game (Last Half of Darkness, 2005) yesterday, and with about 1/3 of installation complete, I got this message: An error occurred while trying to copy a file: I/O error 23. I had my choice of abort, retry or ignore. After the 1st error message I chose retry. After a bit more of the installation I got another error message: I/O 1117. I then tried to ignore, that didn't work, so I aborted. I tried to install a second time, and even tried a second copy of the same game, then tried to install the 2007 sequel to Last Half, same error messages. After each attempt at installation, I could not get the drive to eject the disc. I eventually did by restarting in OSX. My iMac is 13 months old. In November I had a similar problem with another game, this one from about 2004. In that case, the game installed, but froze a few minutes into playing. Because I couldn't play, and couldn't eject, without a great deal of time and "spinning" noise, I took the computer to the Apple Store to have them look at it. I figured that if it was 2 months from being out of warranty, I should get it fixed right then. Of course all the messing with it they did showed no drive problems. All other CD or DVDs, either commercial or homemade, music, video or games have installed and run just fine.
An internet search found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891894 I did everything except the clean boot install, and contacting the manufacturer. After changing the transfer mode per these instructions, I could get all of 2/3 of the way through installation before the error messages popped up.
All drivers are up-to-date according to Windows automatic update and Apple update.
This is my 4th Mac, so I have little experience with PC/Windows. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what I can do to install and play these games? Any help greatly appreciated.

I have followed each of the steps listed in the link above with no success.
Prior to adding the extra drivers I was able to start the Windows install process up to reformatting the "Windows" Bootcamp drive. After that the computer would go through some instal processes and eventually restart. After the restart the screen would go black. The black screen lead me to the Apple Support link above dated March 5 2015. After going through steps listed in the link above, I get an error message stating that the D:\Sources\instal.win. file cannot be located. I am forced to restart the computer at that point and theWindows install process attempts to start again but always ends up at the same point.
Note: I am installing windows 7 Pro from a DVD. I scanned the AutoUnattend.xml file and noticed that it refers to "Windows 7 ULTIMATE" but not "Pro" or any others that I could see. (see below). Could that be part of the issue?

Here is an over-simplified explanation of WIM and CLG files. Assume your DVD Media contains

The File .wim will contains a compressed image which contains File [1...5].
The W7-Ultimate .clg will have 5 entries, with all set to 'Y'.
The W7-Professional .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','Y','Y'.
The W7-Home Premium .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','Y'.
The W7-Home Basic .clg file will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','N'.
This allows a single .wim Image file on the DVD media to be used to install any of the 5 flavors of Windows. When you enter your product key, the Installer knows what specific W7 variant you have the key for and will tell the WIM to extract the specific files the installer needs to be extracted.
The following line
<cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ULTIMATE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
is telling that a retail product key will be entered, which should go look for this specific .clg file (from the five you already have on disk). You can test if it will work for you by changing this line to the following

If it does not work, the other issue can be related to device discovery. Typically A: and B: device names are reserved for Floppy Drives. C: is your internal HDD.
D: can either point to the Optical drive, or the USB. The normal convention is that the removable media is named from Z: backwards. Y: and Z: are usually used for Network drives, so X: should be your USB. First try with the change to "Professional". If it does not work,

Finally yesterday i get my iMac 20, but with 10.4.10 installed. Now i want to install Boot Camp to install WindowsXP.
My question: I really need to make a partition to install Windows on a disk and the MacOSX in the other partition ???

LATE post - for those who come after:
Boot Camp REQUIRES a single, JOURNALLED HFS+ partition (created after midnight on a full moon's wane...*grin*...It's very Particular...) as a starting point - so you better give it one.
In response to junihh's other point: Parallels can be told to use the BootCamp partition as it's very own HDD so, my suggestion would be (as I happen to agree with you): DO IT that way and get the best of all worlds... you can STILL can use the windows from PC as independent window, like a Mac window.
