Disconnect/Reconnect Media (replacing low res stock)

I have a handful of stock video in a my project.  I have been using the watermarked preview files from the stock media site, and now I have my purchased non-watermarked files that I need to replace in my edit.
What is the easiest way to do this?
FCP7 I would simply swap them out by "reconnecting media" and point it to the new file and it would connect to it fine since it had the same duration.
I can't seem to figure out the best way to do it here.
Thanks in advance!

You should be able to relink, so that the library clips point to the new files - assuming both versions have the same type of video and audio in them.
Where is the media stored? Inside the library? Or on a separate folder?
If the watermarked versions are on a folder and not inside the library (what is called "external media") you need only delete them - which will cause the clips to appear as offline (a red rectangle with a yellow warning triangle). Then just use the Relink command and point a folder containing the new versions.
If they are inside the library, then you need to basically do the same thing. The clips will be inside a folder called "Original Media" inside a folder for the event, inside the library package. The easiest way to locate them is to control-click in the browser and choose "Reveal in Finder". Then you can delete them as before - but since you'll be changing the contents of a library in the Finder, you should make a backup of the library just in case.
If you have created optimized or proxy media using the trial versions, you'll need to delete that as well (File->Delete Generated Event Files... or File->Delete Generated Library Files...)

  • Replace low res footage with high res?

Can anyone tell me or is there a tutorial that shows how to take low res preview footage and replace it with the high res files for final output? In my case the high res file names have slightly different numbers. Is there a way to just change them to match the preview footage and be done? Doesn't seem to work for me. Tried relinking with no luck. I get: "Incompatible file. The original file and new file have no shared media range.Relinked files must have the same media type, same frame rate, and similar audio channels as the original files, and must be long enough to cover all the clips that reference the files." Seems like this shoould be a slam dunk!

I was using archival footage and only had low res previews to work with. Now that the project is approved I can buy the  actual footage and complete for output. Is this different from replacing watermaked low stock footage with unmarked high res? Should I have set up the time stamped low res as proxie? Please don't tell me I'm back to square one.....

  • Replacing low-res images with hi-res images

I have an animated image sequence I created with low-res downloads for client approval. Now that they approved the images I want to replace the low-res with hi-res versions but keep my sizing, etc. Is there a way/command to accomplish this without having to resize every image?
    Motion 4.
    Thanks
    -Scott

well the easy way to just replace the images is to either click on each of the images in the media tab and then click on replace media, navigating to your hi-rez versions. Or perhaps even easier would be to name all the hi-rez versions identically to the low rez ones and then in the Finder put the hi-rez ones where the low rez ones are. Of course you will still have to resize the high rez ones, but its easier than replacing each on in the timeline.

  • Replacing low res album artwork in mini player

Here's a slightly neurotic question for the iTunes album art lover community....
I like the new miniplayer in iTunes 11.04 very much. The problem I've discovered is that much of the album artwork I once added to iTunes 10 and which looked fine in the defunct cover-flow, now is too low res in miniplayer.
I've gone back and chosen the artwork over again - usually on the fly when a song comes up in the mini-player - I drop the new artwork onto the miniplayer pane, and bing - the album artwork now looks great.
The problem is that the artwork only seems to be replaced for the one track of the album. All other tracks of the same album have the same low res artwork associated with them. Wouldn't it make sense for the artwork to replace for the entire album with this simple move?
Does anyone know why this is or if there is a good workaround for it that does not involve me stopping my workflow and right clicking to "get info" on the track and replacing artwork for the entire album?
    Thanks!

  • Reconnecting media / Replacing media?

I would like to replace an audio clip in my time line (a cd tune imported as 44.1KHz) WITH the same audio clip but that is 48KHz.
I wouldn't like to loose the volume changes I made on the time line, so I thought there must be a way of just replacing the media, so that all the key frames wont be affected.
Is this possible to do and how can it be done? Thank you for your help.

Your best bet would be to convert the file using QuickTime Pro or iTunes BEFORE importing it into FCP, but since you already have it there, import the 48khz clip and place it somewhere on the Timeline. Next, copy the 44.1khz clip. Right-click on the 48khz clip and choose "Paste Attributes" from the contextual menu, then select 'Levels' from the dialoge window. It should paste the levels from the clip you copied onto the new clip. And finally, replace the old clip with the new one at it's proper place in the Timeline.

  • Switching to low-res photographs

Hi everybody. I'm working with a project with about 500 stills. I need to reduce the size of about half of them. The ones that need resizing are scattered across the project, in various bins, and they need to end up in those same bins when I'm done. (As media, they're scattered across four hard drives.)
Since I need to keep the original hi-res versions on our hard drives, I'm thinking that if I use reconnect media, I would have to tell Final Cut to choose the new low-res version FOR EACH PHOTO (an ignore the old hi-res versions), one by one. Is that right? Or is there a way to get FC to connect to all the new low-rez photos in one fell swoop, ignoring the pathways to the hi-res versions, but preserving the pathways to the hi-res photos that weren't changed?
My plan at the moment is to reveal each still in finder, resize the ones that are too big, import the new low-res stills, one by one, place in proper bin, and once each one is in place, delete its full-res doppelganger. (we're going to keep a hi-res version of the project as a back up, BTW). This will also be cumbersome, but at least I'll be able to follow each still from downsizing to re-entry back into the project, crossing bins off as I go, and I won't have to make a list of every still I downsized and try to deal with them later in reconnect media.
But maybe I'm missing something. Any advice would be appreciated.

Duplicate the originals in the Finder, somewhere very safe. Once they are backed up, go back into FCP, do a find for all the images you want to adjust so they are in a single browser window, then select all and say open in editor. (Make sure you have the program you want to use for image editing defined in the FCP preference.) Then, resize all the images and save them. Don't save as, you already backed up the originals. Just save. Once finished, go back to FCP and all images should reconnect. It might give you a warning that some aspects of the files have changed. Say ok. You also are going to have to resize them in the timeline. If you are going to have them all at 100%, tell FCP to reveal them in the timeline, and press cmd-opt-v to remove attributes, and check off Basic Motion. That will reset the size, rotation, and center.

  • Can you edit in Low Res then conform to High Res

A producer told me she wanted to edit in Low Res, then do an online to replace the sequence with High Res media.  I haven't done this since I started using Final Cut:  I've edited in High Res all along.
Is it necessary?  And how would it be done?  Many thanks for any knowledge you can share.

ProRes 422 is a mastering codec. It's is a format that you do convert many camera formats into. But it is a full resolution mastering codec. Tutorial?  No...but the manual:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/usermanual/#chapter=2%26section=2% 26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:TempBookID-ReplacedWhenAssociatingWithMessierRevision-4 4032FMT-1008869

    https://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/professionalformatsandworkflows/i ndex.html#chapter=10%26section=3%26tasks=true
How did he deal with all that video? Well, he had HUNDREDS of hours...adding up to 54TB. So he had to work on the project in sections, with 12TB loaded at a time.  It was tricky, but far less tricky than offline/online would have been. Less time consuming too...all the time to convert ALL of that footage to offline resolution, long time.
You're iMac is plenty powerful for ProRes. My 7 year old MacPro could deal with it fine, and your machine is more powerful.

  • Odd Reconnecting Media Behavior

Apologies, one more question. When I use the "Reconnect Media" option in the browser to have an image or clip point to a different file, that change is not reflecting in FCP, the Viewer, Canvas and Timeline are all still showing the old file. What is odd is when I use the "Reveal In Finder" option is the image/clip is pointing to the new file. So it looks like the change of the file is applied, but it is not showing in FCP. Why would FCP show the old file, but both "Reconnect Media" and "Reveal In Finder" be pointing to the new file.
    As always, thanks!
    lance

I have actually had this happen on my system a couple of times. Since upgrading to FCP7, haven't seen it. It was an intermittent thing that I never completely diagnosed.
My solution was to rename the new file slightly (Map.pct to MapX.pct) and then drag the newly renamed file from the finder into the bin. Click on the new clip in the bin, hit command C to copy it. Then click on the clip you want to replace in the timeline, hit option V and deselect everything but content, and paste the new content in. You now have your new clip into the sequence without disturbing anything.
This is/was not a solution to the problem, but rather a way to keep the edit going.
    Good luck!

  • Powerbook G4 12 " display is low res and faint

    Dear Gurus of such things,
My Powerbook G4 12" display goes into some kind of low res and faint display after restarting. After days of this, it will suddenly become high res and clear again, for no reason that I can tell. It also recovers after my Powerbook has been connected to a projector.
Is there some way to fix this poor display after restarting without connecting it to a projector?

  • Mavericks: Screen Sharing Resolution changed to low-res

I just updated my two slave macs (Mac Pro, Mac Mini) to Mavericks (main mac still on 10.8.5), and when I do screen-sharing by connecting to each, suddenly I'm getting each slave mac in a square screen at low-res -- 1280x1024. THere are no other options to return these to full 1920x1080-sized windows.
Some other forums recommended a free app called Display Menu that puts a screen resolution in the upper menu bar, but when I select 1920x1080 as the resolution for the sharing window (which it has always been), I get a black screen in that window and the only fix is to turn off the slave mac manually, and when it comes back on and I reconnect to it, it reconnects with the square 1280x1024 monitor window.
It used to be that I got the 16:9 screen share window and I could scale/resize it by dragging corners but that option is gone.
Anyone know how to get that old 1920x1080 resolution back in my screen-shared windows?
    Kerry

Ok so the solution was to user a different VNC client in Ubuntu. "Vinagre" allows you to view your remote session scaled to any size you like. It will however retain the dimentions of your MacBook screen.
One thing to be aware of is that when authentication your VNC session (entering your username and password) Vinagre only allows you to enter a password of 8 characters max. So if your password is longer then 8 characters you will have to shorten it to user Vinagre... A bit annoying but at least it works.
    Techy notes:
It is actially the VNC server Vino that Vinagre uses that is enforcing the password length limit. So if using an alternative client that uses Vino as it's VNC server this limit will apply for that client also.
Even though you are scaling the client session down VNC sends the host's full resolution so you will still transfer a lot of data over the network.

  • Screen Saver Built in Pictures are Low Res

I just purchased this 30" Cinema Display. Really like it a lot. I wanted to use the Beach or Forest screen saver. All the pictures are low res. Is there a way to get HD picts to replace those for a great looking screen saver. The originals are very grainy. I didn't install the software in the box as I don't believe with the new systems you need to. I am hooking it up to a MacBook Pro.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Bennie

The size of the photographs used in the Beach, Forest, Cosmos, etc., slideSavers is 1024*768 and is obviously so on my 23" ACD, let alone a 30".
Interface Lift has some great hi-res wallpapers.
In the past, I've copied the Beach.slideSaver (/System/Library/Screen Savers) to the desktop, right clicked on the copy to "Show Package Contents", burrowed down to "Resources" to find the photos, trashed those jpegs and replaced them with my own. You can rename the slideSaver to *.slideSaver, copy it back to the folder from whence it came (authenticate) and/or to /Library/Screen Savers and you now have hi-res slideSavers of your choice.

  • ID CS 4 exporting PDF books with low-res graphics

I've been exporting ID CS 4 documents to PDF with absolutely no problems, but today I created a book containing multiple documents, and I'm running into a snag when exporting.
If I open a single document and export as PDF, everything is fine. All the images in the document are rendered in high resolution.
If I open a book containing that very same document as well as another document, then I export the book as PDF, many, but not all, of the graphics in the original document are rendered in very low resolution. See image below.
Why? I didn't change a single thing in the dialog box for exporting to PDF.
I did several tests and it appears that if I open all the documents which comprise the book, all the images in the exported PDF are high resolution as desired. However, ultimately I want to create a book with 120+ documents, and there's no way I can keep them all open in memory without ID crashing. Yes, I suppose I can open a subset of the documents, export them, then combine the PDFs in Acrobat, but that's a cludge workaround.
Surely ID CS4 should be able to properly export as PDF a book containing a lot of documents with images, but damned if I can figure out what's causing these low-res images to appear.
If anyone has a solution, I would be very grateful if you'd share it with me.

I don't have a lot of files to test with, but I have one book that has about a dozen component files and around 200 images that's still in CS4. I just tried and export withthe docs closed here, and ID opened them all, as expected, exported, and reclosed them. I see no signs of image degradation, but these are not scaled images -- they were all converted to the correct profiles and scaled in Photoshop and then re-linked during the editing process, and I run Windows, and I'm only at 6.0.5 because this book has a number of Illustrator charts that I spent hours getting right in the first edition and I didn't want to risk them changing, so it may be an apples to oranges comparison.
The last thing I have for a suggestion to try would be a manual prefs replacement (so you can put your current set back when it turns out to be irrelevant). See Replace Your Preferences
Other than that, I'd say you may have found yourself a bug, and there's not a chance in the world that it will ever be fixed for CS4.

  • Album artwork-how do i get rid of old low res images and get new artwork?

Before apple introduced the new artwork download, I spent ages searching the internet for album sleeves and copied them to itunes, but the quality of the images in some cases was very bad. I am trying to replace this artwork with the downloadable high quality images but I can't work it out. I have tried going to the itunes folder in the music section of the finder and deleting all album artwork and then starting a new album artwork download, but all my old crappy low res pictures turn up again after I have done it. Any clues please? I am sure I am missing something.
    thanks

Select all the muisic you want to remove artwork from.
    Right click - Get info.
iTunes willask if you wan tot edit info for multiple items at once. Click OK.
ONLY tick the box next to Artwork then Apply.
It should delete all artwork in those songs.

  • Strange Reconnect Media Problem

I recently moved my computer to a new residence and had to disconnect my external media drives from my computer. When I started up FCP yesterday, I found, not surprisingly, that all my clips were disconnected from their media files. So, I proceeded to try to reconnect them. Just as a test, I selected one video clip file in my browser and hit reconnect media. But when I did this, the only "file" that showed up in the list was the character ". Just the quotation mark. So, I am unable to reconnect " to any file, because I have no file named ". The strange thing about this is that if I close this project (which is a close copy of another project) and open the original project, all my files show as connected to their media. For a variety of reasons, I don't want to use the original project file. I want to use the copy. Any ideas why this project (which I've used for 6 months with no problems) is suddenly not connecting to the media but instead is giving me quotation marks?
    Thanks!

I echo the posters above. This is a major bummer Apple! How is this fixed? In my scenario, I started a project on my raid, had to pull in clips from a network drive , which ended up becoming offline. When it was placed online again, the clips had to be reconnected, and instead of there being clip names for these in the reconnect media window, there is only " any attempts to get around this either by selecting multiple clip names or single ones are met with "
Any help would greatly be appreciated!!
