Disk commands

I'm looking for some command line commands to do the following.
1. See what disks are attached to the system.
2. How to navigate to an external disk. Do you need to mount it first and if so, how?
3. How to tell how a disk has been formatted as well as how the partitions have been formatted.

Well, I've done this before with other posts and have been chastised for giving too much detail. So, I figured I start with some basic questions and work from there. However, if you feel the details are necessary (and you think I'm working backwards with my questions), here goes.
Ok, this is my goal...
I recently purchased a new external HD with the intention of addressing a couple of issues and problems. First, I wanted the ability to run backups of both my iMac and my MacBook. Currently, I've simply been running backups of the laptop to my iMac. Unfortunately, this filled up my iMac within a week of starting Time Machine (this problem was already addressed in another post and explained to me). So, I turned it off and removed the rather large backup file (which, BTW, took over 2 days to empty the trash). Secondly, my MacBook is dangerously full (one third of which consists of my wife's iPhoto library (> 45GB)), and I need to store off some data to free up the disk.
So, with that said, my plan is to do the following.
1. Attach an external HD to my Airport extreme and access it from both computers.
2. Create 3 partitions (one for backups from the Macbook, one for backups from the iMac, and one for storing common data to be accessed by both systems).
3. Use the common data partition on the new HD for accessing a common iPhoto library as well as other libraries (such as iTunes, etc) and data/documents. Yes, I realize you cannot access the same library from multiple computers at the same time.
4. Taking step #3 one step further; since all common data will be located on the external HD (and accessed directly from the two computers), use the disk space on the individual computers for keeping backups of the common data on the external HD. This will not be done using Time Machine since that is primarily for backing up your entire system in case of a catastrophic failure. It will be done with some shell scripts that will keep the common data in sync (via cron jobs utilizing rsync, etc.).
Now, when I first got the external HD, I plugged it into the Airport Extreme via USB. Although AE could see the disk, my iMac could not. So, I remembered reading that the disk may need to be formatted for the Mac. With that in mind, I wanted to know exactly how the disk was currently formatted. So, I plugged it directly into the iMac (via USB), and then needed some commands to see exactly what the disk looked like. This was the reason for my initial questions. I figured that if I bombarded everyone with a bunch of details, I may never get any answers. Also, I'm the kind of person that likes to get as much detail as possible before I dive in and start doing things like reformatting HD's (which is irreversible). Besides, if my plan doesn't work, I still want the option of returning the unit and getting my money back (which I'm not so sure I can do once I reformat it). Anyway, I guess I just wanted to start off with some simple questions and work from there.
Do you think this plan is achievable, or do you have any suggestions as to what may be a better way to go? Thanks for your input.

  • Using Disk Utility's Repair Disk Command with Time Machine

I'm trying to figure out whether or not I can use Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on a Time Machine volume. Time machine is taking a very long time to finalize its backups. I don't know if there are directory issues that need to be addressed or if it's due to the very large size of the directory. I've been using Time Machine on this computer since last January and the Time Machine directory takes up over 7 GB of disk space! It's so large that DiskWarrior will no longer work on that volume. DiskWarrior has a limit of 4 GB. I can't be the only one in this situation. I don't want my Time Machine backup to get hopelessly corrupted and then have to start agin. I'm trying to be proactive about correcting any issues before they become serious.

    Jon
So far I haven't a clue as to what is wrong, so until a person stumbles in here with one, maybe you could amuse me with as to how you figured how much space the "catalog" is taking. I surely see nothing funny going on my system, although my Time Machine volume is smaller than yours and I might not be looking in all the right places.

  • How can I recover files from a hard disk that I erased using the Erase Disk command in Disk Utility?

    Thanks for your help!

True but a DVD is a lot less expensive than the cost of commercial recovery software. TestDisk is also free but it is a set of Terminal programs.
Yes, it's not for GUI only using folks.
Free Linux alternatives are awkward. First, you have to download a Linux ISO and burn it to a DVD. Then boot the live demo and install Linux. That requires first partitioning the hard drive.  And, on and on. It's nice if you already have a Linux installed.
Linux doesn't have to be installed. It can be loaded into RAM for the duration of the recovery.
Even if PartedMagic can be downloaded with a bootable Linux system it must still be burned to a DVD.
Any computer can be used to burn the ISO to disk, which makes it attractive in that regard.
Once PM is burned and booted off of it's loaded into RAM and flushed upon a reboot.
But the data recovery software in PM requires familiarity of the command line. That's it's drawback unfortunately.
However one can transfer files that were not deleted using this method.
...using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
Those "bootable cd's" of Data Rescue, File Salvage, and TechTool are probablly using Linux as it's a free OS.
Apple won't allow their OS to be used, Microsoft charges a huge license fee. So that only leaves Linux.
The user likely won't know that they are using Linux when using the bootable recovery disk, all they see is the recovery GUI.
Data Rescue is likely best downloaded, installed and run from a familiar OS X installed on a new HFS+ formatted external drive, then option booted from.
This would be faster than waiting for bootable disks to arrive in the mails. One has to use a exteranl drive anyway larger than the drive being recovered to hold all the potential recovered data.

    Hello,
By default, the Oracle Inventory directory is not installed under the Oracle Base directory.
This is because all Oracle software installations share a common Oracle Inventory,
...The Oracle Inventory should be shared by all Oracle installations on the Server. So its location is unique.
However, you may have several Oracle Base directories.
Oracle Base is the root directory of the Oracle installation and may change from one major release to another one. However, the same Oracle Base may be used for several installations:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e17163/glossary.htm#g998168
Also, by default OUI suggest you the Oracle Base directory. In general you have something like "/u01/app/oracle". But you are free to set the Oracle Base directory you prefer.
    Hope this help.
    Best regards,
    Jean-Valentin

    Hello I have a iMac with 3.4 GHZ intel core I7, memory 16 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, and OS X 10.9.4 Software.
I have problems when I try to copy or modify any file from my MAC to MY PORTABLE DRIVE/DISQUE (external hard disk).
my external hard disk have the next features:
    brand: Seagate
    4TB
I do not know if I need some software such as: paragon or I need to configure my MAC,
    Please help me..
    Thanks a lot

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • MDT 2013 Fails to Format or Partition disk on Surface Pro 3

I have been trying to image a Surface Pro 3 using MDT 2013 and have been unable to get past the Format and Partition portion of the deployment.  At first I would get an error that it was unable to format or partition the drive and then after that it
just reboots after trying for so long.  I am able to image any other device with the same task sequence and have no issue just having an issue with the Surface Pro 3.  Any help would be great.
    Thanks in advance.
I am getting the error FAILURE (5210)
ZTI Error - Unhandled error returned by ZTIDISKPART: Object required (424)

I think our problem is also hardware failure although without re-imaging a working surface pro 3 I can't be sure.
I tried what imfusio suggested in this thread.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d31384bc-4e96-4a5b-a400-637bd6006d81/failure-5456-unable-to-determine-destination-disk-partition-and-or-drive-surface-pro-3?forum=mdt
Unfortunately the deployment failed with the same ZTI Error - Unhandled error returned by ZTIDISKPART:
    Object required (424)
I then rebooted into WinPE and ran diskpart, I could see the two volumes (EFI and OSDisk). I then tried to format the OS disk volume using diskpart. I got a paramater is incorrect error and the disk was no longer visible with a 'list disk' command. So it's
like the format is putting the disk offline. I'm going to try restore one of these surfaces, apply all firmware updates then re-image. If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas.

Dead in the water- the computer had a system recovery disk - all the exe and bat files on the disk do not lead to any restore ractivity- but by doing either  the f8 or f10  we WERE ABLE to get to a system retore screen - no date options so assumed this was to original set up however, when it started it ran slow and after a few hours stopped with an error messsage with less than 30% restore completed. The message states something like this assume not found  Multi(0) Disk(0) rDisk(0) Partision2\windows\system32\KDcom.DLL  then repeats all but the last which changes to other  files NTOSKRNL.EXE   HAL.DLL ETC

  • File can't be copied -- no errors found on disk

    Hi everyone!
I'm having a problem with a disc connected connected to my mac mini -- i doubt this really has to do with the mini itself, but i couldn't find a more appropriate forum.
the mini is a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo running Tiger 10.4.11 with 1GB RAM. I have 300GB disk connected via FireWire and 2 1TB disks (one is about 1 year old, the other one only 2 months) connected via a hub on the USB-2 port.
Now all of this works fine. But recently I've tried to copy a 350MB video file from one of the 1TB disk to the other one using the Finder, and it doesn't work: the Finder copies up to 320MB, then keeps trying for a while, and finally displays an error message:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "video01.avi" could not be read or written (Error code -36)"
I've tried to copy the same file to other disks or over the network, and no luck -- so it really has to do with the source disk. Copying it using ditto shows an I/O error.
When playing the video file using e.g. VLC, the video freezes after 39 minutes -- which corresponds to the 320MB.
However, I've run Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" command, as well as DiskWarrior "Check files", and both say the disk is OK and doesn't need repair.
Does anyone have any idea what I could do to repair that disk? Getting the file isn't so important (though I'd be glad if that could be done), but I'm afraid the problem might occur again if I don't do something now. Is there another utility I could try, which would perform a real physical check of the disk? Would formatting help (wouldn't be too good, as the disk is about half full, but well)?
Thx a lot for your help!

  • Can't repair Macintosh HD in Disk Utility (extended attributes)

    Hi all,
I have a Retina Macbook Pro with one of them new fancy SSDs in it. I'm running 10.9.3 all up-to-date and am a bit computer-savvy, but I'm more than puzzled by what my Mac has been doing as of late.
When trying to install Windows via Bootcamp, I ran into an error message in the Partitioning step of the process. I hopped into Disk Utility, figuring I could simply partition from there (something in me trusts Disk Utility more than the Boot Camp Assistant). Partition failed!
I then executed the "Verify Disk" command in Disk Utility, only to be told I needed to restart from the Recovery Partition and use the "Repair Disk" function of Disk Utility then. Log of this whole event is at the end of this post, but the offending line seems to be
    2014-06-12 20:59:30 -0400: Checking extended attributes file.
    2014-06-12 20:59:30 -0400: (It should be 15783744 instead of 14437995)
I then restarted and followed these instructions. "Verify Disk" found no errors, nor did "Repair Disk." I rebooted, only to be met with the same problem!
Is there some sort of lower-level command I can use to repair my disk if I boot in Single User mode or something?
    Thanks,
    Nathan

I tried soft-booting by holding the shift-key down just as a trouble-shooting idea and I was able to verify and the drives were working well. However, when I restarted in normal mode I was not able to verify or repair.
What is my G4's problem? Why does it need to use that secondary drive in order to operate? What do I need to do to fix it?
    Any suggestions?

  • Irregular behavior entering sleep + iMac freezes in verify disk

My iMac (Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.4.10) is having some sleep issues. When iChat is running and I put it to sleep, it makes the iChat disconnect sound several times (and in a very scary way), and only then goes to sleep. When I wake it, a gray screen appears for a second, and only then the machine comes back.
I ran the Verify Disk command in Disk Utility, and the Mac froze, forcing me to shut it down through the power button. I then booted from Install Disk 1, and ran a verify disk command from there. It showed no problem, so I booted back to my main drive, and the sleep issues continued. I tried to run Verify Disk again(form the main drive), and the mac froze again.
The only thing I changed was deleting some .plist files from iChat, since it kept disconnecting.
I really have no idea what to do next. I would really appreciate if someone could help me to solve this isuue.
    Thanks,
    Omer.

In order for iChat to stay connected and running the computer needs to stay awake, when you go to the drop down menu and select sleep it puts both the (Display and Computer) to sleep.
On that note there are two thing you can do:
    1. Quit iChat befor sleeping the computer from the drop-down menu!
    2. Leave the computer awake and only sleep the display, how you ask?

  • Question on adding LUNs to disk group

    GI version :11.2.0.3.0
    Platform : OEL
I need to add 2TB to the following disk group. Each LUN is 100gb in size.
    100gb x 20 = 2 Tera Byte. Which means I have to run 20 commands like below
SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP DATA_DG1 ADD DISK '/dev/sdc1' rebalance power 4;Each ALTER DISKGROUP...ADD DISK command's rebalance takes around 30 minutes to complete.
So, this operation will take 10 hours to complete.
    ie. 20 x 30 = 600 minutes = 10 hours !!!I have a 3-node RAC. Can I run ALTER DISKGROUP...ADD DISK commands in parallel from each node ? Will ASM instance allow
multiple rebalance operations in a single Disk group ?

    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asmdiskgrps.htm
Oracle ASM can perform one disk group rebalance at a time on a given instance. If you have initiated multiple rebalances on different disk groups on a single node, then Oracle processes these operations in parallel on additional nodes if available; otherwise the rebalances are performed serially on the single node. You can explicitly initiate rebalances on different disk groups on different nodes in parallel.
Why do you need to run 20 of these commands??
Can you not just add 20 of the disks in one go:
    ALTER DISKGROUP DATADG ADD DISK
    '/devices/diska5' NAME disk1,
    '/devices/diska6' NAME disk2,
    '/devices/diska7' NAME disk3,
    ...etc
You shouldn't need to manually rebalance as Oracle will automatically do the rebalancing when the configuration changes unless you want to use a non-default value of power as defined by the ASM_POWER_LIMIT parameter. You can run the above command with a rebalance option as well if you you need to do so.

  • How do I setup the scratch disk on a 2nd internal drive?

I am having difficulty setuping up a scratch disk on a 2nd internal hard drive for final cut pro X. When I go to file/import the second drive is not visible. Any ideas....
    Thanks!

I had the same issue with my iMac and 2 internal disks: system & applications on 256GB SSD, another 2TB internal hard disk that was meant to store media, and Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 just wouldn't see my 2TB internal disk. Only the SSD would appear in the Event Browser.
I solved it by checking read/write permissions on the hard disk. I have 2 users: one with admin rights which I used to initially set up the iMac and install software (including FCP X), and another user with standard rights for everyday use (including FCP X production).
My 2nd user only had read permissions on the 2nd internal hard disk. I selected the disk, Command-I, changed permissions to read/write, and when I launched FCP X again, both volumes would show up now. Issue solved!
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows cannot be installed to this disk... but HDD works

Hi All, I have an issue with the internal SATA HDD in my Pavilion dm4t laptop (PR #: XQ1313AAR). The drive is working, when connecting via external USB enclosure is recognized by the PC, can read/write data, format partitions etc… When plugged in as internal HDD of the laptop, BIOS does not recognize it. When booting from Windows Installation Disk, the drive (and its partitions) are recognized, but I get the following message when trying to select a partition to proceed with Windows install: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller is enabled in the computer’s BIOS menu. Used external USB enclosure again, connected to a working PC and using TestDisk, I deleted the partition table (by zero writing it several times), then created a new MBR. When connecting back as internal drive, it is now recognized by BIOS and in the Windows installation screen, I can actually select a partition on the drive to install Windows on; the installation actually runs, but as soon as I get to the point of having to restart the PC during the installation process, upon restart the drive is not recognized anymore… When I remove it, and repeat the same steps with TestDisk, it once again works, can start Windows installation, but it fails upon restart. I have already read numerous forums on the topic, have tried various drive utilities. I also saw in one of the forums a suggestion to enable AHCI for the SATA controller, but the laptop BIOS is extremely limited and does not have that option. Please help!!! Have been without a working laptop for several weeks and is driving me crazy. Saving any data on the drive is not needed – I have recovered all data from it that I need. So my only objective is to restore the harddrive to fully working state and be able to install OS on it (Windows 7, 64-bit)! Thanks in advance for any help!

I've tried many things already, spend countless hours on this and still no luck  What seems to get me at least a step closer:- Boot using Windows 7 Install DVD-Go to Repair Computer and open Command Prompt-Run DiskPart, Clean the disk-After restart am able to create partitions on the disk through Windows 7 Installation and install Windows-As a last step of Windows install, it reboots the system, and upon reboot drive is not recognized - goes again into booting from DVD and starting Windows installation from scratch... When following the installation steps, this time it does not allow to go through with the installation stating that "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." When in diskpart and using Detail Disk command, I see that disk is NOT bootable. Could that be causing the issue and how can it be solved?

  • Locked Install Disk, Fails to Erase or Partition

For starters, I was having issues with the logic board/graphics of my 2007 Macbook Pro, (Model # A1226), currently running Mac OS X 10.8, (Mountain Lion). I managed to find a replacement logic board which I successfully installed. The laptop ran much smoother on OS X 10.7 (Lion) and that's what I've been trying to downgrade to, and that's where my problem continues.
I've got a downloaded install image on a usb stick, the file is "InstallESD.dmg". At some point, I was having issues with every option and did a recovery/restore of the hard drive from the usb stick. Surprisingly, at startup it brings me to the "Mac OS X Utilities" options which shows Lion being available as an install option, however after that point of selecting it, I get the message that the disk is locked. That is most likely because I restored the hard drive from the usb drive containing the bootable installer.
Whenever I try to partition or erase the drive, I get a "Fail to Erase" or "Partition Fail" message through Disk Utility. Even if I do a Cmd + R and try to reboot from the Recovery Disk for 10.8.5, (putting me back into Mountain Lion), I still get a "Locked Install Disk" message leaving me nowhere but stuck.
Ideally, I'd like to get back to Lion. I'm fine with erasing the hard drive, I have all my necessary files backed up, just not through Time Machine. I've also got what I thought was the bootable copy of Lion on the USB drive, but when I try to boot from there, the laptop is in a constant loading cycle with the apple logo replaced by one of those "no" symbols, (circles with the diagonal line), so I assume I didn't set it up correctly as a boot disk.

  • WS2008 R2 - Invalid dynamic disk

I have a software RAID5 array in Windows Server 2008 R2.  5x4TB drives.  After clean shutdown all the disks in disk management are listed as invalid.  When I try to reactivate any of them I get this error message: This operation is not allowed
    on the invalid disk pack.
What can I do?  I've searched high and low and can't find a solution.

    Hi,
Based on research, it seems a bug that Dynamic disk(s) comes back as INVALID after taking offline, or following reboot.
This bug surfaces when the size of a record in the LDM matches exactly the size of a block on disk. In this situation, volmgrx incorrectly flags the record as incomplete. After reading the whole database, volmgrx will clean all incomplete records. That’s why
we end up with an empty volume record and with a plex that’s not referenced by a volume.
In this repro, we have a record for a volume that’s bigger than 2TB, has a 3 digit number and has no drive letter (which means attributes are stored in the record). Because of this, the record size was exactly 68 bytes, which is the size available in the block
    after all the headers.
If the effected Windows 2008 R2 server is Non-DPM server, we must re-create the volumes manually and restore from backup.
If the server is a DPM 2007 server, all of the dynamic disks in the DPM storage pool will be inaccessible. To avoid having to rebuild the DPM server from scratch, you can use the following procedure to clean (wipe out) the dynamic disks and recreate the DPM
replica and recovery point volumes while maintaining the rest of the DPM 2007 configuration.
WARNING: This procedure is non-reversible, and will result in ALL replica and recovery point volumes to be permanently lost. Verify with the customer that he has a >2TB volume configured before proceeding.
    1) Run diskpart.exe - and issue a "list disk" command - and see which disks show the status of INVALID
    2) Select one invalid disk at a time and issue a CLEAN command to wipe it out and make it a RAW disk again.
    3) Select one disk at a time and convert to GPT, then Dynamic.
    4) Exit diskpart.exe
5)Now add the same disks to the DPM storage pool under the management tab - disk tab.
    6) From command prompt - run the following command to remake the DPM volumes - this may take hours...
    dpmsync -reallocatereplica
    7) AFTER Dpmsync completes, re-run diskpart.exe and save the output of the "list volume" command.
NOTE: Make the DOS window so if has a height of 9999 before running list volume - then copy the contents of the window to notepad.
    8) Search the output of list volume and locate any volumes are larger than 2000 GB (2TB) - note the mountpoint path.
    9) From command prompt - run mountvol.exe >mountvol.txt - then open the mountpoint.txt using notepad. Search for the path for the >2GB volumes to get the volume {Guid}
    10) Use mountvol.exe to assign a drive letter to that volume.
    mountvol E: \\?\Volume{bf14e9ca-d929-11dd-8f76-806e6f6e6963}
    11) Repeat steps 7-9 for ANY and ALL volumes that have a volume numbers above 99, and exceed the 2TB size.
It is now safe to reboot and not experience the dynamic Invalid status for the dynamic disks. If the customer creates any more dynamic volumes that exceed 2TB - they MUST assign a drive letter or they will experience the same issue.
    12) Run Consistency checks for all the data sources to get the DPM server back into a consistent state and continue protectecting the production servers.
    I hope this helps.
