MDT 2013 Fails to Format or Partition disk on Surface Pro 3

I have been trying to image a Surface Pro 3 using MDT 2013 and have been unable to get past the Format and Partition portion of the deployment.  At first I would get an error that it was unable to format or partition the drive and then after that it
just reboots after trying for so long.  I am able to image any other device with the same task sequence and have no issue just having an issue with the Surface Pro 3.  Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance.
I am getting the error FAILURE (5210)
ZTI Error - Unhandled error returned by ZTIDISKPART: Object required (424)

I think our problem is also hardware failure although without re-imaging a working surface pro 3 I can't be sure.
I tried what imfusio suggested in this thread.
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d31384bc-4e96-4a5b-a400-637bd6006d81/failure-5456-unable-to-determine-destination-disk-partition-and-or-drive-surface-pro-3?forum=mdt
Unfortunately the deployment failed with the same ZTI Error - Unhandled error returned by ZTIDISKPART:
Object required (424)
I then rebooted into WinPE and ran diskpart, I could see the two volumes (EFI and OSDisk). I then tried to format the OS disk volume using diskpart. I got a paramater is incorrect error and the disk was no longer visible with a 'list disk' command. So it's
like the format is putting the disk offline. I'm going to try restore one of these surfaces, apply all firmware updates then re-image. If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas.

  • SCCM 2012 OSD Fails After Formatting and Partitioning Disks

    Hello,
The problem is that when I deploy the task sequence to a computer, it loads to WindowsPE properly, then continues to formatting the hard disk and partitioning. After it has finished partitioning it then goes to the applying
the operating system portion of the task sequence. Finally it errors out with "...Image has failed with the error code (0x80070002)...". What is left on the WinPE is two log files in the SMSTSLog directory, smsts.log and wpeinit.log. Neither of these
seemed to show anything blatantly obvious to me, but I'm sure there is still some funny things happening.
This is my first time posting to a help forum of any kind so any constructive criticism is very welcome! Thanks for helping in advance, since SCCM has probably been the most challenging software I have had to setup. I
    definitely need the help.
Apparently I can't just throw in all of my logs at once, so I shortened the smsts.log and removed the wpeinit.log. So just say if you need them I guess.

  • MDT 2012 U1 LTI Format incorrect partition

    Hi, everyone:
I recently  update for xp to Win7 use MDT 2012 Update 1. Everything looks can be, but except for some individual strange question.
    Details are follows:
The original xp partition C: is Primary partition, also system disk; other is extended partition, including D and E drive.
After performing MDT task sequence (disabled "format and partition disk" step for only format C:),  this machine D drive formatted and put wim applied to the D drive.
On xp running wmic results are as follows:
     C:\>wmic path win32_diskpartition get bootable,bootpartition,caption,description
    Bootable  BootPartition  Caption                Description
              FALSE          Disk #0, Partition #0  Extended w/Extended Int 13
TRUE      TRUE           Disk #0, Partition #1  Installable File System
    diskpart:
    DISKPART> list part
      Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
      Partition 1    Primary             24 GB    32 KB
      Partition 2    Extended           125 GB    24 GB
      Partition 3    Logical             49 GB    24 GB
      Partition 4    Logical             76 GB    73 GB
Finally, I found that if  the disk 0,partition #1 is C driver, the task  sequence will fail.
    Anyone have a solution?  Thanks.

espero y te ayude estas opciones dentro de MDT

  • Deployment to an UEFI enabled system using a custom Format and Partition Disk Task does not work

    Hello all,
I know that MDT 2012 Update 1 has the necessary intelligence to create the GPT partition etc. when the Gather Process detects that the system is UEFI enabled. However i wanted to configure the Format and Parition task myself, so i copied the default one,
disabled it and just added a new one with the following configuration.
    Disk Number 0
    Disk Type = GPT
    i then added
EFI, Partition Type = EFI, 500 MB, file system FAT32
    MSR, 128 MB,
    OSDisk 40 GB, PRIMARY
i then start the Win8 x64 Task Sequence , it formats the disks, it applies the image, but then when it reboots i cannot boot.
What am i doing wrong here ?

  • MDT 2013 + create 5 recommended UEFI/GPT drive partitions

    Hi
My end goal is to deploy a custom x86 image to a UEFI device (tablet) using a USB stick. It is likely that my .wim file will be >4GB, but for now, I'm just trying to get the process working with a standard OEM <4GB .wim file.
As per this post, I have performed steps under sections 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 MANUALLY, by booting the tablet using a WINPE 5.0 USB and running
    1) diskpart /s E:\CreatePartitions.txt
    and
    2) E:\ApplyImage E:\Images\ThinImage.wim
Q: Above worked perfectly and it's exactly what I'm looking for.  How do I incorporate 1) + 2) into MDT, or do I simply attempt to replicate the code from 1) + 2) under "Format and Partition Disk" under PreInstall\New
    Computer only step?
Any advice or pointers would be really appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

Recovery images, that's a different story.
First option is to increase the size of the System partition to the desired size:
    BdeDriveSize=5000
Otherwise, the best solution I've seen is to build the standard MDT partition configuration using the default MDT "Format and Partition" step. and *THEN* shrink the partition to the desired size. Yes Shrink.
The other option is to increase the size of partition 1 from
See Mike's post on WimBoot for the example script LTIApplyWim.wsf script that shows how shrinking works.

  • Task Sequence Windows Server 2012 format and partition issue when using MDT2012

    Hi all,
Currently I'm working on a task sequence to deploy a Windows Server 2012 image. We've integrated MDT2012 Update 1 in SCCM2012 SP1 and created a default 'Server Task Sequence'. This task sequence deploys the install.wim to a server which has multiple disks
    attached.
We've configured multiple format and partition disk steps to create the following partition layout:
Disk 0: 499MB BDEDrive (do not assign drive letter) + 40GB OSDisk
    Disk 1: 40GB Programs
    Disk 2: 40GB Data
    Disk 3: 25GB User
When the task sequence is finished I've noticed the drive letters assigned to the disk are not correct. In some cases the BDEdrive gets drive letter D assigned, sometimes drive letters are assigned starting with E, thus skipping drive
    letter D.
The smsts.log files show an error when it's re-assigning drive letters after booting into Windows. Looks like an error in the DiskPartScript.txt.

It seems this error is caused by the first 'Format and Partition Disk' step before the 'Use Toolkit Package' step which is part of the default Server Task sequence. When I disable this Format and Partition step and create the partition manually
all looks ok showing no errors in the smsts.log file.
I've solved this by replacing the first 'Format and Partition Disk' step by an Powershell command which formats and partitions the disk.
    Anyone seen this behavior?

I have a similar problem when I install windows on some clients. Have you found any explanation for the behavior?

  • MDT 2013, D: Wim not applying after update from MDT 2010 to 2013

Updated MDT from MDT 2010 Update 1 to MDT 2012 Update 1, uninstalled WAIK, Installed MDT 2013, and then ADK, Upgraded all Deployment shares along the way, and now the extra drive (D:) Wim will not apply to Drive, i have tried two different ways to handle
the said action, the first was using the Unattend.xml, adding the  DataImage Action, the other was using an Imagex command from the MDT task sequence. neither is applying the Wim, before the upgrade this worked. has any one else had this issue?
    Thank you,

I moved from MDT 2010 to MDT 2013 and its just not working, i have tried a few different methods, the old way we used the
Unattend.xml and placed a install order and that always worked, but now i am trying to use Imagex and its not applying the wim, when i get in the image the D:\ (Second Drive) is missing files.  Now here is the weird part, if i re-run the task sequence
the D WIM is applied, but that's counter productive. i will apply my TS.xml information.

  • Surface Pro 2 freezes briefly - storachi and disk error

    Hello tech net
I am running a surface pro 2 with windows 8.1 (updates current as of 3 days ago), 4 GB RAM, 64GB HD.  For the last several months the device will freeze up for about 5-10 secs multiple times per hour, and then resolve on it's own.  During that
time task manager shows the disk is at 100% and event viewer will display 2 Warnings: an storachi (129) and a disk (153) error.  This is in addition to a service control error (7000) that happens multiple times per second but doesn't seem to
affect performance.  These freezes happen when plugged in, on battery, SDXC card installed or not, wi-fi or not, and no particular program running. It even happens when I'm not using the device if I go back thru event viewer.  The 100% on disk is
not associated with any increase in process or app activity.  Most of the time there are a couple 0.1MB/s demands like outlook, explorer or service host running but nothing that looks unusual when it spikes and freezes.
I am not a tech person and my online search for help has yielded a wide variety of solutions to this problem that didn't seem to be reliable fixes and sounded a little beyond my usual capabilities.  Anyone know if this is fixable or do I need to send
    the device back?
    Thanks!

Not much information here to go on. Can you supply the bdd.log file. Copy to a public share like OneDrive, and share the link.
Typically any problems with format and partition have to do with the storage driver. Are you using the latest ADK from Microsoft? As Surface Pro 2 only supports Windows 8.x, you should *only* be using uEFI mode and GPT.
THe default MDT Task Sequence will do the right thing, *however*, if you change the settings in the "FOrmat and Partition Disk" step, you are then responsible for the settings from then on.

  • Locked Install Disk, Fails to Erase or Partition

For starters, I was having issues with the logic board/graphics of my 2007 Macbook Pro, (Model # A1226), currently running Mac OS X 10.8, (Mountain Lion). I managed to find a replacement logic board which I successfully installed. The laptop ran much smoother on OS X 10.7 (Lion) and that's what I've been trying to downgrade to, and that's where my problem continues.
I've got a downloaded install image on a usb stick, the file is "InstallESD.dmg". At some point, I was having issues with every option and did a recovery/restore of the hard drive from the usb stick. Surprisingly, at startup it brings me to the "Mac OS X Utilities" options which shows Lion being available as an install option, however after that point of selecting it, I get the message that the disk is locked. That is most likely because I restored the hard drive from the usb drive containing the bootable installer.
Whenever I try to partition or erase the drive, I get a "Fail to Erase" or "Partition Fail" message through Disk Utility. Even if I do a Cmd + R and try to reboot from the Recovery Disk for 10.8.5, (putting me back into Mountain Lion), I still get a "Locked Install Disk" message leaving me nowhere but stuck.
Ideally, I'd like to get back to Lion. I'm fine with erasing the hard drive, I have all my necessary files backed up, just not through Time Machine. I've also got what I thought was the bootable copy of Lion on the USB drive, but when I try to boot from there, the laptop is in a constant loading cycle with the apple logo replaced by one of those "no" symbols, (circles with the diagonal line), so I assume I didn't set it up correctly as a boot disk.

  • [Solved] Failed to format flash drive after recent update(3/6/2013)

    Hello,
I'm experiencing failure at formatting my flash drive to ext2,3,4, fat32(or possibly any possible format).
This happens after the recent system update which includes filesystem, I wonder if that's the reason.
    So I followed the instructions here : https://www.archlinux.org/news/binaries … ervention/
and I start to fail at formatting my flash drive using mkfs, while mkfs on live CD 2013.05.01 works perfectly.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I once had a very odd occurrence that - being an isolated incident - I still don't really understand.  But it seemed no matter what I did I could not erase data from a flash drive.  I'd dd from /dev/zero, reformat, put it on a different computer, and it'd indeed be empty.  But then when I plugged it back in to my computer it showed up as populated with a bunch of files that used to be on it.
It seemed like there must have been a filesystem created on my own harddrive that was being mounted to the mount point when the usb drive was detected - so what I was seeing wasn't really on the usb, but was on my drive.
I don't know if it is possible to accidentally format a mount point rather than a device - I would think it should fail, but I can't help but wonder if something like that is going on: when the usb is plugged into your machine, the locally created filesystem is being mounted, but when you plug the usb into another computer, it's obviously not there.
Some steps that may avoid whatever could cause this:
    1) reboot to have a fully fresh start.
    2) make sure any automounting utilities are disabled
    3) partition/dev/sdX and format /dev/sdXn as usual
    4) sync, to ensure all disk io is flushed.

  • Keep extra partition on deployment with MDT 2013

    hello all,
I am using MDT 2013 to make the
deployment of some workstations in the company,
however they all have an extra
    partition (D: \),
doing some testing I noticed that the
    MDT does clean the entire
disk, not just on the C:\ drive.
Is it possible to get the MDT format
    just drive the system keeping
    the extra drive (D:\)?
    Thank you.

if you are just replacing the OS, then I recommend the "Refresh" scenario. Refresh will take an existing Machine and refresh it to a new OS version, persisting the existing partition configuration.

  • MDT 2013 - Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = -2147467259 0x80004005

I'm attempting to deploy an image that I have recently captured with MDT.  I was able to capture the image without any problems and after capturing, it booted up properly.  But now when I go to deploy the image using a Standard Task Sequence it
errors out.  It does boot into WinPE and gets to the installing operating system portion then spits out the following 8 errors:
    (5624):2: Run ImageX: /apply "\\PDC31089\DeploymentShare$\Operating Systems\Win7_BUP_1-31-14\Win7_BUP_1-31-14.wim" 1 C:

Code 0x80004005After I receive the error messages if I attempt to restart the computer and allow it to boot up it just comes up with:"An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system"
I have tried the following to resolve this issue:
Create a new deployment share with only network drivers added and the one .WIM that was captured with MDT as well as one Task sequence.
    Update to MDT 2013
Update Deployment share and completely regenerate Boot images
Tried starting deployment from within Windows by mapping the drive and executing litetouch.vbs
Also tried starting deployment using USB boot disk
I'm running out of ideas and seem to keep getting the same 8 error messages.  It's very aggravating and am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction.

I came across this post recently. I am having the same string of errors suddenly when I try to deploy any image from my MDT 2013 server now. Previous images now fail to install soon after the Inject Drivers task sequence at the Install Operating System sequence.
Each time I try to deploy an image(have tried several each with different task sequences), I get the same 7 errors.
    The errors produced are:

  • Use the default format and partition step to format disk0 partition 1 in multiple disks sutiation

As we know,we need to disable the default format and partition step in ts to let mdt deploy os on C and leave the other partitions stay safe when there is only one disk on pc,and the way of installing operation system is logical drive letter store in a varible.
But what if there are 2 disks on pc,and for a record the disk 0 is always the OS disk, don't need to confirmed this. How can we modify the format and partition step to format only C on disk0 under this condition?then lead the mdt to do the rest deployment
    by itself.
    Thanks

You are pushing up against the design limits of MDT, and the more complex and/or arbitrary the disk configuration the harder it is for MDT to perform installations.
If you want to maintain the *existing* disk configuration, and just update the OS present, then the recommended course of action is to run MDT from *within* the OS (cscript.exe
\\server\deploymentshare$\scripts\litetouch.vbs), not from WinPE. When you do this, it's called a "refresh" scenario. MDT can capture the user files via USMT, and it knows which
partitions to use, because it's launched from within the OS itself.
Disabling the default Format and Partition step has other unintended consequences.

  • How do I make NTFS format for partition in disk utility ?

Hi, how would I format a external hard drive partition to NTFS for windows ? There's no option in disk utility. Only MS-DOS ( FAT ) , ExFat, free space, Mac OS extended- journaled, Mac OS extended, journaled case sensitive.
The other partition would be mac os extended journaled . Does it have something to do with partition scheme ? I'm running mountain lion .

    ok i wasn't clear,

I want to make a backup of my windows partition and mac partition on my macbook pro retina on to ONE external hard drive.
Ok, so you have OS X and Windows in BootCamp on your Retina MBP.
You want to make a backup of both to one drive and this is what you should do.
Get another powered external drive slightly larger than your internal boot drive.
Use Disk Utility to format this external drive with a GUID partition table and two partitions each slightly larger than your MacintoshHD and BootCamp partitions
The first external partition formatted OS X extended journaled (MacintoshHD2) and the second one exFAT (WindowsBootcamp2) The OS X parittion is first at the top.
Download these two programs, Carbon Copy Cloner and Winclone 3.
Use CCC to clone the OS X MacintoshHD to the MacintoshHD2, and use Winclone 3 (runs in OS X) to backup Windows BootCamp to WindowsBootCamp2.
The OS X clone on the external drive is bootable if you hold the option key down while booting the computer.
The Winclone 3 partition on the external drive is not bootable, it's a backup only as Windows is copy protected and will invalidate itself if it ran.
    Warnings:
Don't use CCC to clone BootCamp, it's not designed for that and won't restore to run Windows.
There is no software that can do both parittions at the same time and be bootable or restore properly to a different sized drive or restore the RecoveryHD partition. Some have tried with some other softwares and have problems with lost drive space.
Both partitions have to be cloned/backed up seperatly as there is some intelligence involved and the user needs the option to adjust partition space.
Also, backup your files in Windows (and OS X) to a regular external exFAT drive that was formatted on the oldest Windows machine your going to connect to, OS X doesn't do exFAT correctly so Windows can't read it. The exFAT partition using Winclone likely won't be readable by a Windows PC.
    Most commonly used backup methods
    .Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's
Again, you can't run Windows from a external drive, it's copy protected and takes the hardware id's into that, so it's essentially worthless to use NTFS on the external WindowsBootcamp2 partition.
All you need is a partition format that can handle over 4GB sized files, and exFAT is ideal and free to use. FAT32 can't handle 4GB+ files and is being phased out.
