Disk drive no longer opens on PowerPC G4

was trying to "wipe" it, as getting ready to recycle. did i erase something I shouldn't have? now i can't start it from cd, or any other way.

First line indicates that Disc will not work on your Mac, you have one of these...
Mac Server G4 733 (Quicksilver) PowerMac3,5   1 Mac Server G4 800 DP (Quicksilver) PowerMac3,5   1 Mac Server G4 933 (QS 2002) PowerMac3,5   1 Mac Server G4 1.0 DP (QS 2002) PowerMac3,5
And if you're up for a challenge, might try this if you do not have the original Discs...

  • Dv9ooo series dv9925nr notebook no audio, disk drive no longer works

so i purchased this notebook brand new some years ago from best buy but right after my warrenty went out the audio would not work, then it could not even find the audio hardware installed, shortly after the disk drive no longer worked, so i stopped using because hp wouldnt do nothing about it, well i recently decided to look up the problem and read there was a lawsuit regarding this, i mean we spent 1000.00 for this laptop where 300.00 ones lasted longer and worked better, i have not bought a hp product since because i feel they dont stand behind their products, but i read the amd ones were being replaced, so is hp going to be able to still stand behind that and fix mine too, and what is the issue with it??

    Hi @Lookin4help ,
I have sent your issue for review and do check your private message when a HP employee reaches out to you in regards to this one.

our Bank import file is equal to the format described in DMEE TC eversy single line matches exact.

Hi Laurynas, we are running the same migration  process  as you mentioned and have the same problem with the FF_5 transaction.
Have you figure out something to correct this problem?..
    Thank you in advance

  • Disk drive no longer mounting

Hmm. Last night I took the QT upgrade and somehow during the 'optimization' process after it installed, a whole bunch of the unix files went walking - over a dozen files in the /sbin/ folder, including the mach_init (oh joys!).
Thankfully I have a second system running and I put the damaged HD into an external USB sled and copied the files back into the correct folder.
The system now boots and launches fine but I cannot get it to recognize the disk drive. The drive powers up but doesn't mount. I've run through all the system tricks to get it to do so, but it will not. I have a feeling that there may have been more files that got lost than I could get an accounting of.
Where else would I look to find and copy missing binaries for the disk drive? Not knowing this level of the code so well - I don't relish pecking and poking through everything all day - I don't really know where to hunt.
Much thanks to anyone who can get me on the right path.
    Deb.

Outstanding! I'll start with those five.
The first two I've already gone through and matched up files. I was missing a 'mount_cd9660' file - found that by sorting through with a list view.
    Houston, the Eagle has landed!
Now that I think of it, earlier on Sunday, I had a glitch while OnyX was running a maintenance and it locked-up. The system recovered, but I think you're right, in that the QT upgrade unmasked the problem.
Beyond that, it's been running rock-solid, and I run DiskWarrior every month or so.. but this is kind of cool, in that I'm getting to see the hierarchy of the unix system.
    Thanks!
    Deb.

  • Imac runs slower and disk drive no longer supported

I am not tech savvy.  I am writing this for help.  My 2009 imac has been upgraded each year.  Now that I have Yosemite, things run slower. I thought keeping current was a good thing, but now I realize it might not be. Also, why has apple discontinued support of the disk drive for iphoto, idvd, and iweb. I loved using those items and creating things. Now my only option for saving photos is to put them on a flash drive.  I was told there are apps, but I don't know which ones. I never knew that things would be discontinued and not usable.  There should be a warning  to dummies like me who don't know that apple gives then takes away.  I thought each upgrade made things easier, safer, and better.  Guess that is not the case.    If anyone can tell me what to do so that my disk drive will work with iphoto, let me know.  Also, any easy to follow steps are greatly appreciated as I am a "simple" user.  Thank you.

You need to upgrade iPhoto to 9.6.
I don't use iWeb, but IDvd runs fine for me. Yes, Apple has discontinued support for them, but that was several years ago.

  • Disk Drive won't open: Root Cause

I've seen several posts here and elsewhere on why the DVD/CD drive won't open/eject on the Mac Pro or Macbook. Pressing the keyboard button doesn't eject it, and neither do any terminal commands. After banging my head against a wall I found the cause: VMWare Fusion had "mounted" the DVD-drive so the Mac thought the drive was terminally "busy". If you have Parallels, the same may be happening to you as well.
P.S. I suspect a similar thing may be happening with my external hard drive, which I have set up as my Time Machine drive. I periodically get a message that Time Machine encountered an error but no details. The drive may be hijacked by VMWare when Time Machine tries to access it...

VMware can grab USB devices too. It's a good idea to make sure your VM's aren't set to attach the cd/dvd drive automatically when they start.

  • Disk drive doesn't open

The tray doesn't open when I press the button on the keyboard, instead it makes noises. It also isn't closed completely and when I try to close it, it won't move. How can I fix it, or do I need a new drive?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you open the white door in the dome using a finger nail first does the tray still struggle?

  • Disk utility doesn't open, trash works incorrectly.

After updating to 10.7.3 I have noticed that Disk Utility no longer opens. It pops up into the utility bar for a few seconds, bobs up and down a couple of times, then disappears. The next time I click on Disk Utility I don't even get that much of a response. It just doesn't open. No error report, no pop ups saying that it can't be opened - Nada. I can't use disk utility AT ALL anymore. I've tried Zapping my PRAM, but that's about it.
The other thing I've noticed is that any time I put something into the Trash Bin it automatically tells me that it will delete the item - it doesn't sit in the trash bin like it used to until you manually delete it. The only time I can get it to behave normally is when I am using an external drive and I put something from the external drive into the trash bin.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

So I've been trying to open some Microsoft Word Documents and it says it can't be opened because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. What do I do about this?

    Workarounds:
    1.  Restore the OS X that you formerly used to run Word 2004;
    2.  Partition your hard drive or attach an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) so that you can "dual-boot" into Microsoft Word 2004;
    3.  Upgrade to Word 2011 or use an alternative program; or
    4.  The solution I use: Install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels 7 or 8:

I upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion and now my Canon Pixima MP500 will not open because PowerPC apps are no longer supported! Has anyone experience this problem?

Correct. Applications designed to run on the old PPC Macs (which Apple stopped making in 2005) cannot run on Mountain Lion.

  • IPhoto library on external hard drive will no longer open

I'm hoping that someone will be able to point me to a simple solution to my problem...
I'm running iPhoto 9.6 on a  MacBook Pro (Retina, 13 inch, mid-2014).  The OS is Yosemite 10.10.1.  Because the flash storage is only 250GB I have my main iPhoto library (146GB) on a partition of an external 1TB Lacie Rugged drive.  The external hard drive also has partitions for Time Machine Backup and SuperDuper Bootable Clone.  I have a separate, much smaller iPhoto library on the MBP which contains recent photos.
Yesterday I failed to reconnect my MacBook Pro to the power source when I put it back on my desk.  The result was that the battery went below 5% and the MBP turned itself off and also ejected the external hard drive (some time after I reconnected the power cable there were dialog boxes on my screen informing me that each of the three partitions had been ejected incorrectly).  I waited until the MBP was fully charged before I tried to open my 'main' iPhoto library on the external hard drive.  I received a message that the library would have to be upgraded to work with the computer (very odd, because it had already been upgraded last October when I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and has been working without any real problem ever since then).
After some hours when the only message on the screen was 'Rebuiding Thumbnail Caches' I pressed Cmd+Option+Esc I saw that iPhoto was 'Paused'  - that message subsequently changed to 'Not Responding'.  I 'Force Quit' iPhoto but the iPhoto library will not open at all from the external drive.
As a test I quit iPhoto and re-started using the Option key and chose to open the iPhoto library which is on the internal drive and it opened without any problem.
I recall that it used to be possible to fix this sort of thing (perhaps not) by trashing the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file, however, I don't seem to be able to find it :-(
I'm really at a loss as to how I should approach this problem and I would be very grateful for any suggestions that can be offered.
    Cheers
    Tricia

    Further update ....
I downloaded and installed iPhoto Library Manager and then chose Library - Rebuild Library.  Unfortunately, when it had finished the result was 0 images in any file or folder.  I checked the log (which is incredibly long) but here's the beginning of it which seems to indicate that the problem is that an essential file is missing -

As mentioned in an earlier post I do have another iPhoto Library on my 2008 MacBook.
Can someone advise the best way to proceed?  I'm thinking that I should erase the partition of my external hard drive that is called Pictures and then connect the external hard drive to my 2008 MacBook and simply drag and drop the iPhoto Library to the Pictures partition.  IIRC, that's the way I moved the iPhoto Library last October when I bought my new MacBook Pro which didn't have enough storage for me to be able to store my iPhoto Library on the MBP.  I could then reconnect the external hard drive to my MBP and the iPhoto Library should reappear, shouldn't it?
Looking forward to more input ...

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.
