Disk Utility Mount Volume

Trying to mount a particular volume (john) in disk utility using Applescript. Just got the script to open disk utility. What language is necessary to mount this particular volume?
thanks

This is a slightly messy situation, particularly as code seems to work differently with 10.4.6 and 10.4.11
Long story short: I've been using the do shell script command for this on 10.4.6 for some time, with an issue related only to diskutil unmount (not mount) -- see discussion of this below.
I only recently upgraded to 10.4.11 and SEEM to be seeing different behavior, but I don't have time to explore that right now.
In any case:
1) Niel is correct in that disk utility isn't scriptable beyond basic commands
2) Using the shell (or do shell script), I've been using the disk identifier, rather than the disk name. You can find the disk identifier by highlighting the disk of interest in disk utility and then selecting "Get Info". The disk identifier will be in the form (example) 1s3.
[3) BTW, you don't need a tell block for do shell script. Dispense with the "tell app "Finder"/end tell"]
4) Try this:
do shell script "diskutil (un)mount disk1S3" -- using, of course, the correct identifier, and it doesn't matter that the disk is an external one. And, of course, delete "(un)" if you are mounting the drive.
5) This will probably work for you, but I'm finding at the moment that identifying the drive by name rather than disk identifier is NOT working consistently in 10.4.11.
6) You will probably find that the "mount" command is fast but that the unmount command has a delay of some 20 seconds +/-. This happens also with 10.4.6, and there is no apparent workaround with "do shell script." HOWEVER, if you use terminal more directly, via AppleScript," that unmount delay disappears -- at least in 10.4.6. My quick tries in 10.4.11 seem to reveal a new issue (later).
To take the more direct approach, try code like this:
tell app "Terminal"
do script "diskutil unmount disk1s3 -- NOT do shell script
quit saving no
end tell
The downside of this is that a Terminal window opens (however briefly). In 10.4.6, the "quit saving no" line promptly got rid of the window after the drive had unmounted but, in 10.4.11, the Terminal app seems reluctant to quit. I need to investigate this more.
OKAY, now you're left with the problem of using the disk identifier, which changes on every re-boot of the computer. The scripts I wrote in the past actually get the disk identifier associated with each drive name -- but these are long scripts with some pretty messy code, and you probably don't want to get into that sort of thing. On the other hand, it seems to me that I've successfully used the /Volumes/(drive name) approach in 10.4.6, so this may be another instance of 10.4.11 acting differently.
If you want, try some of the suggestions above and post your findings -- I think I'll be looking at this more with respect to the apparent 10.4.11 issues.

  • Disk Utility Reports Volume Check Failed

I've been having some trouble with one of my two internal hard drives, so by mistake I ran Disk Utility from the Panther install disk on my PowerPC G5 running 10.4.10...I didn't realize until after I'd run Disk Repair that it wasn't the Tiger install disk I was using.
The Disk Repair Utility from the 10.3 install disk reported an "Invalid Leaf Record Count(it should be 41 instead of 210)". It also said that "2 HFS Volumes Repaired, 1 Volume Could Not Be Repaired". This was particularly puzzling since there were only two partitions on that internal hard drive. What was this other Volume it referred to?
Upon realizing that I was using an old CD, I ran Disk Utility from the Tiger install disk, and got a report "Invalid Catalog Record Type. Volume Check Failed."
Can anyone shed any light on what this all means, and how I can fix it?
    Many thanks in advance!
    -Zina

Thanks, abrody, for your reply. First, I ws lucky in that there was no indication other than Retrospect reporting a problem with this, the client machine, so all data was available and the system seemed to be working fine (other than the error report).
Here's what worked for me: I ran Disk Repair (from the Tiger install disk)on all 4 partitions on my second internal HD, and came up with a clean report. I erased one of the partitions and, using SuperDuper, I cloned the system partition from the troublesome partition on the other internal HD. Then I ran Disk Repair from the install disk again, on the cloned partition, to be sure I didn't carry over the problem with the clone. It came up clean.
Then I erased the troublesome system partition and cloned the system back over from the trouble-free partition clone.
I ram Disk Repair again from the install disk, just to make sure everything came up with a clean bill of health, which it did.
But I'm going to keep a close eye on this internal HD, since I think it's possible it's failing. I always back up all my data every night, so at least I'm covered there.
Again, thanks so much for your reply and help.

  • Problems with Disk Utility & Mounting DMG!! Help!!

Hey guys, im a fairly inexperienced mac user anyways I recently bought a IBOOK G3 with Tiger 10.4 and i'm having major issues with Disk Utility and installing applications.
The issues with D.I are that it loads up then I get the error message "Disk Utlity started but a background process needed in Disk Utility didn't start properly. Please quit and restart Disk Utility. And when I do restart it, i get the same error over and over.
Also my second problem is whenever I try to and install DMG files I get the error: "Broken Pipe" and sometimes "Device Not Configured"
I've tried searching for resolutions for each problem but they both involve the other functioning! I'm really at a loss, i've tried using programs like pacifist to reinstall my original files etc and they haven't seemed to help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you xxx

Hi Kellie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
Report if there were errors please.

  • Disk Utility reports 'Volume could not be repaired'  Now what?

Disk Utility reports that my internal HD cannot be repaired (I tried booting to the installation CD as-well-as a Superduper image with the same result). Here is the complete dialogue:
    Verify and Repair disk “iMac_HD”

    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.

    Checking multi-linked files.

Unfortunately the backup image has the same problem, so no use restoring the internal HD from it. So what do I do now? I read on a forum that the 'illegal name' error is caused by Photoshop CS, but didn't see a solution. Help!
     20" Intel iMac (2.0GB RAM, 256MB VRAM, 500GB HD)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I get this error occassionally too. In those cases I take my original install dvd, put it in, reboot and hold the c key.
It then starts an install (don't worry, it won't do anything). When the install screen appears, in the top menu you can select Disk Utility.
Repair the disk from there, it will probably manage now. I guess something is interfering with Disk Utility when all of OS X has loaded.
Once the disk is repaired, verify/repair permissions, exit the program and reboot (don't hold and press c this time around).
    Hope this helps.

  • Disk Utility: invalid volume file count & directory count

My MacBook OS X version 10.5.8 has ran quite slowly occasionally but I think that's due to the fact I've had it for almost 5 years. But then yesterday it kept on freezing every few seconds so that it was impossible to do anything. I then left it overnight and in the morning cleared the safari cache and kept rebooting it which eventually stopped it freezing so often. But now certain applications such as iTunes keep quitting before they even open properly and applications that do work still freeze every so often. So then I ran disk utility and verified the disk which came up with this:
    "Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 759557 instead of 759584)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 157930 instead of 157903)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
However the 'repair disk' button is dimmed so I can't click on it. Then when I typed in my problem on the help bar it said I need to use the installation disk to be able to repair this but I don't know where this disc is, so was wondering if there are any ways of fixing this without needing a disc?

was wondering if there are any ways of fixing this without needing a disc?
    No.
You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782?viewlocale=en_US
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.

  • If leopard won't boot from dvd, use disk utility mount to partition

wanted to share a way that i successfully installed os 9, tiger, and leopard on 1 hard drive. first of all, leopard was the only installation that i had difficulty with. it would not boot off the original dvd, no matter if i held down the 'c' key or the option key, so this is what i did after a lot of reading on the internet to try and troubleshoot this issue.
First thing i did was partition my internal hard drive in 3 partitions using disk utility. the 3rd partition was around 9gb. I installed os9 first on the 1st partition, i then installed tiger on that same partition. then i put in my leopard dvd, and opened up disk utility. and clicked on "restore", and dragged the dvd image as the "source", and chose the 9gb partition as the destination, and clicked on restore. then, i changed the "startup disk" to start from the 9gb where i just restored the image, and rebooted, and went through the leopard setup and chose the 2nd partition as the place to install. this should work with the dvd, or if you made an image from the dvd. I hope this helps someone else whose dvd won't boot, because it was very frustrating after you purchase a faster processor, and faster video card so that your system meets the requirements, and then the dvd won't boot.

Two ways. Use another computer to restore the install disc to one of those ext HD. Then, use it to boot the other machine. Get an ext CD/DVD reader and use it to read the install disc and boot the machine. However, if both the HD and optical reader are kaput, then a trip to an Apple repair station is in order.

  • Disk Utility says volume needs repair, tests failed. Now what?

What exactly does this mean? Unfortunately, I bought this TiBook from a classmate, and he didn't have his Tiger DVD, so all I have is 10.0 and a 10.1 upgrade. Do I have to use this to re-install?
    Thanks!
    Jim

    Hello James:
Since you do not have the Tiger DVD you have a few choices (none particularly good). You should ALWAYS have the software install DVD - I am not sure what will happen when you run repair disk from an older software install CD/DVD. You will be unable to reinstall Tiger unless you have the proper DVD. I would return the iBook and get my money back from your classmate unless that person produces the proper software.
Incidentally, if Apple's repair disk (run from the CD/DVD) is unable to repair problems, DiskWarrior is the next option. DW is the 'gold standard' of directory repair, but it is pricey at about $90.

  • Disk Utility Won't Mount SparseBundle

I am experimenting with SuperDuper clones and Time Machine, both of which have created .SparseBundle images of system drives.
If I boot from Leopard Install Disc and run Disk Utility (which I would have to do if the system drive failed completely), , I can't restore from the sparsebundle -- it has to be mounted first. But if I go File>Open Disk Image, the Sparsebundle is grey and I can't do anything with it.
Now, I've tried Disk Utility from a regular working system, and I have the same problem. Except in this case, I can drag the sparsebundle into the sidebar of Disk Utility, and all I have to do is double-click it and it mounts, allowing me to restore (i assume, I haven't actually tried it yet.)
How am I supposed to restore from a sparsebundle (which SuperDuper recommends for 10.5, 10.6 users)? SuperDuper's user guide skims right over this point.
Why can't Disk Utility mount the sparebundle image, when I know that it can, if only I'm able to drag it?
    Sigh
    Thanks.

Use the option, restore from a TM image. AFAIK, that's how you do it w/TM. I've not used SD! in years, so you should ask at ShirtPocket. BTW, I highly doubt they're recommending images over bootable backups, which you can test without restoring, but I've been wrong before.

  • Greyed out Volume Format box in Disk Utility 10.4.

    Hi,
i'm trying to open up more space on my hard drive by doing a full erase. Available space is about 6GB on a 80GB drive. Running OS X 10.4.11. on a Mac Book Black. Want to install 10.6. SL.
In Disk Utility the Volume Format box is greyed out. It's set as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    How can i change it?
    Thanks for any advice.

OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Upon completion select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

  • Is it normal for an external HD to blink its light and still be visible in Disk Utility, after it's been Ejected?

After Eject, the drive disappears from Finder, stops spinning and its light starts a slow blinking pattern, but in Disk Utility the volume appears greyed-out and unmounted while the HD is still visible (not greyed-out). If you try to re-eject it from there nothing happens... Disconnecting the HD's USB cable after a normal Eject (from the Finder), does not prompt any type of "incorrect ejection of volume" messages.
Other drives that I tried, only differ in the activity of their light post-ejection - some stay still, others blink.
Just for reference, when I eject a USB Pendrive from Finder, it disappears completely and stops blinking.
Is this normal OS X behavior?

    ForeignerMullet wrote:

This is probably normal. Some drives blink when being written to/read from, while others blink unless read/write is occuring.

If this is just for a few seconds, that's normal. If it's permanent, it's not.

    Normal/good.

    See above.

Normal; a flash drive has no source of power and could not possibly keep blinking.

    What should I do?

To add to my former post...
Applejack a free (ie donationware) program fixed my Filesystem, directory and Volume structure problem! YAY! I found the program and a good review of it at Macfixit after I was googling around about the Flash Plugin problem. BTW that was fixed also...
I am SOOO Happy! The other recommendation by a lot of the gurus on this site was to purchase DiskWarrier which cost 100 buckeroos! Sounds good but APPLEJACK is free!
You do need to go into single user 'root' mode which is a scary place for non-pros to be. But it was simple to do and very fascinating to watch it work. You do have a choice whether to have the fixes done in 'auto' mode or interactive which does each step separately. MacFixit suggested to do it on the interactive mode at least the first time. So I did.
It found all kinds of garbage and WAY more stuff like corrupted files etc. It sequesters them so you can take a looksee before trashing them...nice. And it was able to repair permissions that diskutility could not. I did a repeat of the 'verify disk' etc and got a clean bill of health.
Now I must go back and donate a few bucks and send a thank-you to the developers of Applejack! I hope this helps another freaked out Newby like me! Ciao!

If you get this error and you have not already restarted your computer, open you sharing preferences and make sure you ahve not set the everyone group to 'no access'. If you have change it and retry to run the permissions repair. If you have already restarted you will need to startup using your install DVD and then open terminal. In terminal type the following to fix your permissions.
    chmod 775 /Volumes/'Macintosh HD'
This will change your permissions and you should be able then to get past the grey screen.
    Hope this helps someone.

Hi everyone, I believe my permissions are the problem.
I let someone change permission settings to share music files on their hard drive and mine and another mac (3 in total) yesterday. I seemed to work. I can't remember if I then shut down my mac or just closed it. Anyway last night I was trying to organise the music files and burn them to dvd. I also tried change the permissions as some of the files were read only. I though it worked. It seemed to be burning and the screen saver came up, I clicked to exit screen saver and it just went to black and back to screen saver and i couldn't go any further. I had to hold down the power button to turn if off.
I tried to turn it on and now it's stuck on start up gray screen with the loading wheel thing? just loading forever.
I used disk utility, verified volume and repair disk are ok, but verify permissions and repair permissions, I get an Error message "the underlying task reported failure on exit"
I opened terminal and typed in what tryjezus1 said,"chmod 775 /Volumes/'Macintosh HD'" and pressed return. Not sure if I should have pressed return or if I should have just closed the window?. Anyway I'm still stuck.
I only have the mac since march so I believe I still have phone support, but if anyone can help I'd like to try and sort this out myself.
