Disk Utility not recognizing externals correctly

I have two external hard drives that are connected through a USB 2.0 hub. One is called "Photo Store" and the other is called "Photo Store Backup". When I load them, they both show up on the desktop properly. However, when I load Disk Utility, things show differently. They show as separate physical drives, but with the same name and all the same information (UUID, etc.). At the same time, it still shows the drives on the desktop properly.
What can I do to fix this?

My fix was to just reformat one of the drives. That changed the UUID which was conflicting between the two drives.

OS X Disk Utility not recognizing Seagate 3TB drive in dock
Been scouring the webs and can't quite figure this one out.
I just purchased a Seagate 3TB drive intending on using it for Backup.
Ended up plugging it into a dock and couldn't get it to show up in Disk Utility..
Interesting enough, I plugged this into an HP laptop and it displays just fine.
    Anyone know the solution?

  • Copy of a CD (created by Disk Utility) not recognized by Windows or Linux

I created a copy of AutoCAD 2005 (not pirating it... just wanted a backup copy of the install CD).
I used Disk Utility (File > New > Disk Image From Folder) to successfully create a DMG file on my MacBook. I could mount the DMG and browse all the files on it.
I then burned a CD (Disk Utility > select DMG > click burn), which mounts fine on OSX. However, my Windows and Linux boxes will not recognize it (while they recognize the original CD just fine).
I tried again, this time setting the file format to DVD/CD master. It made a CDR file, which I burned to CD. Got the same result: Windows and Linux don't recognize it while OSX does.
So instead I burned the files to a CD ala drag and drop using Finder. This time the CD was recognized by Windows and I used it to install AutoCAD.
However, my understanding is that doing it this way won't work for a bootable CD, so I'd like to figure out why Disk Utility wasn't able to make an exact copy.
Any thoughts? Problem with copy protection? Problem with the CD's file system?

Yeah OS X's Disk Utility doesn't burn using the ISO 9660 file system while Finder does (I could swear I made a copy of an MS Office CD with Disk Utility, but maybe I'm remembering wrong). Anyway, Disco (a program I got in a MacHeist bundle) will make an exact copy of CDs. Anyone looking for a free solution, check out LiquidCD and burn, which may have the ability to copy Windows CDs (appears to be on their lists of features, but I haven't tried them myself).

  • 'No' symbol on start-up, disk utility not recognizing internal drive

    Need a little assistance.
Two days ago I was using the Macbook and it froze. Restarted and I was hit with the international no symbol. I've also gotten the blinking file folder at times when I've tried the holding down of various buttons on start-up.
I put a Hitachi 750 gb harddrive in last fall, it has been working fine up until now.
I do not have the system disk for Snow Leopard on hand, so until I can get it from my Dad, I decided to check on the system disk I actually have from the laptop purchase in 2007.
This allowed me to get to the start-up disk and disk utility area. I could not find my external harddrive in the list for a start-up, and it is the back-up using Time Machine. I also could not get the internal harddrive to be found in the utility so I could do a repair. It did seem to recognize that there is a drive, but not the actual named portion of it that contains the info.
I removed the internal and put it in an external case: my netbook recognizes that there is hardware, but does not let me access it. I attribute this to the fact that the drive is formatted for Mac and the Windows machine can't recognize the data.
My next step was to see if my old iMac would recognize the internal as an external, but since I don't know where the keyboard is and it is running an early version of OS X, figured it won't do me much good.
What is my next step? Will the Snow Leopard disk make a difference? Or is the reaction with the older system disk going to carry on the same way with Snow Leopard?
I was going to buy a Macbook Pro, but not for over another month, so I'm hoping I can figure something out with this and make it last a little longer.

I hooked my internal as an external up to my Mom's Macbook Pro and it recognized my HD. I'm thinking it is something internal with the hook-up, which is awesome, because maybe I can actually fix it!!!!  Any thoughts?

  • Disk Utility not recognizing connected disks half the time

About half the time i run Disk Utility all i get is the Disk Utility window that's blank on the left side where my connected drives should be and in the main area of the DU window is the message "Gathering disk information" will a spinning wheel type thing under it. The only way i can quit DU is by forcing a quit. I don't have any idea why this happens so much. I've run repair permissions and repair disk from the install disk. No problems detected.
    Any ideas?
    thx

disk utility can only repair directly attached drives. it can not work on network drives like Time Capsule. but you can try repairing the sparse bundle itself. drag it to disk utility's left pane, select it there and choose "repair disk".

  • Disk Utility not recognizing Time Capsule Disk?

Hi I'm receiving the following error message from Time Machine:
"The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I am able to access the Time Capsule's hard drive via Finder, and can see the sparsebundles there, but when opening Disk Utility the Time Capsule does not appear on the left sidebar along with other hard drives (such as that of the iMac and an external USB drive).
I've gone through restore and factory resets, this message continues to come up...any suggestions?
    thanks

  • Disk utility not recognizing HD

    Hi,
I have a G4 PowerMac with two 80 GB hard drives. When I boot up the computer, it boots up from the primary drive and runs fine. At this time, both my primary and my secondary drives are accessible and visible.
However, when I boot up the computer using either the Tiger or Leopard DVDs and then run Disk Utility, it only recognizes my secondary hard drive and not my main hard drive.
Also, if I quit Disk Utility at this time and tell it to re-start, it asks me which drive to boot from and the only option is either the DVD or the secondary hard drive. It just doesn't even see my main hard drive. I have to eject the DVD and re-boot for it to boot from the primary drive again.
    Any advice?

I can see and use the hard drive only when I boot from it. When I boot from it, it is on my desktop, in my System Profiler, and visible under Disk Utility.
When I boot from DVD, the drive is not visible anywhere - not in System Profiler and not in Disk Utility.
I booted the computer using the HD and did a "Verify Disk". It gave me several errors and one in red that told me I needed to do a disk repair. I did a disk repair by booting the computer into Safe Mode (which performs a disk repair automatically). Then I rebooted regularly (from the HD) and went into Disk Utility and did another "Verify Disk". This time it verified successfully. I also repaired permissions successfully.
    However...
when I booted from DVD, the drive was again invisible.

  • Disk Utility Not Recognizing Hard Drive - PLEASE HELP!!

So, I just bought this Power Mac G4 from a friend to run my Digidesign hardware. I turned it on this afternoon to install the Apple software for the wireless mighty mouse. When I turned the computer on, the second hard drive was not present in Finder, and I could not locate it in Disk Utility.
I have two hard drives present in the computer ... the 120gb main hard drive and this 2nd internal 80gb hard drive. I'm not very "tech savvy" with the comptuer outside of running protools ...
Does anyone know what the problem could be? Or is it likely that the hard drive just fried??
    Thanks,
    Justin

When two hard drives are attached to the same data ribbon cable, connected to the same IDE controller, one drive must be configured as "master," and the other drive configured as "slave." This is accomplished by placing a plastic jumper (sometimes two jumpers) across a specific pair (or pairs) of pins on the back end of the drive. If the manufacturer didn't apply a label to the drive with jumper designations, the user manual or manufacturer's web site will have the info needed for that specific hard drive. The drive connected at the end of the ribbon cable should be configured as master, and the drive connected to the middle connector as slave. If the 80 GB drive isn't mounting, it's probably configured the same as the 120 GB, so check both drives.

  • Disk Utility Not Reporting Space Correctly

I often add very large files to my system before compressing them, sending them to clients, and then deleting them. This process leaves me constantly thinking about how much disk space I have free. Disk Utility, and an Apple approved app called DaisyDisk (space visualization) typically help me accompish this. Sadly, as of this week I seem to have a problem. When I went and looked the other day Disk U was telling me that 250gb of my 320gb drive is in use. This seemed high to me, but to be safe I thought I'd delete some files I didn't need. After deleting a bunch of videos, and a backup of my Main Identity (19gb) from my system, I'd assumed I had freed up about 24gb, but when I went back into Disk U it was still showing the same 250gb in use. Yes I rebooted my system, and made sure the trash was empty. As I investigated further I did a get info on all 6 folders on the MacHD and they added up to about 170gb. That seemed more realistic, so I did a get info on my MacHD and again it showed the same thing 170 in use and 148.something available. Note: I have no partitions on this drive. But yet, still when I go to Disk U it seemed to be stuck at only 64gb free. Today when I went and looked again I am still seeing the same amount in use and free on the MacHD get info, but on Disk U now I am seeing 108 free and 211 in use. Why the difference? I would think Get Info was pulling from the same place as the mac disk utility.
    Would appreciate any insight!

  • "This disk is not recognized by this computer"

I have a FireWire LaCie external disk, that suddenly stopped working.
Did some copying of files and then I discovered some folder were missing.
Then I restarted and got the message "This disk is not recognized by this computer. I did choose Igonre and when I run Disk Utilty I get this message:

    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

What shall I do? I'm panicking, since there are life-important (almost) files on the disk.
I have Data Rescue II - do I dare to run the program, or shall I take the disk to a company??

Bought the Data Rescue II, have restored most of the files. I think so, at lest. Many orphans, but at least they do have their names intact, and I have a pretty good idea where to put them. I only hope that the PSD files are intact too, all my video assets are on Beta and can be re-captured if needed.
    Tanks for your tip!
It's the SECOND failure today - first I replaced an existing folder with an empty one and copied another 40 GB of files to the disk. Not much to rescue there...
And then this happens. Not having a good week so far.

My disk utility not work like it used to, it does not show up a disk when I put it in the drive. And I can't copy to disk anymore. Another thought is to check System Preferences/CD's & DVD'S, and check your selection nuder "When you insert a blank CD" (or DVD).
Running Disk Utility from the install disk, and repairing permissions is also another possible fix.

  • Ipod Classic Re-Formatted In Disk Utility Not Being Recognized

I last posted about this question 4 months ago on this forum and still havent received an answer that works. My Silver Ipod Classic 80GB was used to update the OS on my computer. Foolishly I partitioned the disk on it using disk utility and updated my computer. After i tried to erase the partition the ipod stopped being recognized as an ipod on my mac running OSX. It is recognized as a hard drive. I formatted it with Mac OSX extended Journaled in disk utility and nothing seems to work. When i plug it in itunes auto starts and pops up but the Ipod simply doesnt show up in the side bar. I have tried it on all different macs and windows computers and it still wont be recgonized on the mac. On the windows machine i am able to reformatt it so it works with a PC but when i plug it into a mac itunes autostarts and it still isnt recognized as an ipod

  • Can't download flash player - 'Disk image not recognized'

    MAC OS X
    10.6.8
2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
I'm trying to download and install the lastest adobe flash player but having a little problem. It downloads without any problem but when I come to double click it it comes up with the following warning/error message.
The following disk images couldn't be opened. Reason - Not Recognized
I have no idea why this has suddenly come up.
I've complete uninstalled Adobe flash player and tried to reinstall it but it still hasn't worked.
I've also tried to open the 'install_flash_player_osx.dmg' file in Disk Utility but it says its 'Unable to attach'. One thing I have noticed is that the Disk write status is - Not mounted, read only
I'm not sure what this means. If someone could help me out I would appricate it very much.

Not certain what other issue may be the cause of the symptom(s) you've stated above, but there is a link to try & get an Adobe flash player plugin for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 through this page. Also note the comments by users there who relate experience, and an apparent link to a recent beta version(?)
    https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/4783/adobe-flash-player
While other system maintenance may need to be done for the computer to see any update correctly, there also is a chance the file may not be the proper one. Several exist at the Adobe site, some are not compatible.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Disk Utility no longer working correctly

I did a search and couldn't find a similar problem, so here goes.
    I'm running OS 10.4.11 on a G4 PPC Dual 1.25 GHz.
I've done the regular updates the last several weeks:
    QuickTime-7.5.5
    iTunes- 8.0
    Xserve RAID Driver Update- 1.0
    Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 7- 1.0
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update- 2.2
    Security Update 2008-006 (PowerPC)- 1.0
    Security Update 2008-007 (PowerPC)- 1.0
Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update- 1.1
    iTunes- 8.0.1
    iPhoto Update- 7.1.5
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update- 2.3
    Safari- 3.2
    iLife Support- 8.3.1
    iTunes- 8.0.2
    Safari- 3.2.1
Since the updating of the above, when launching Disk Utility, I get the spinning beachball as it tries to find my hard drives. It spins and spins and spins, but my drives don't show up.
Sometimes logging out and back in and then restarting will make DU work ok, but that can't be normal. It should work on each launch.
Is anyone having similar problems? Anyone know what the cause and solution may be?
Thanks in advance for any help, and Happy Thanksgiving!

    Hi,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Or, Might give a try with Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • External Hard Disk SUDDENLY NOT RECOGNIZED!

The mac is suddenly no longer recognizing my external hard drive. I have called apple support, but the only solution they suggest is for me to bring it into an Apple store for a repair... Unfortunately I don-t have the time right now to go to an apple sotre, and I was wondering if any of you out there had a solution,
ISSUE: External Drive (Buffalo Ministation 1TB) no longer recognized by mac.
    INFORMATION/TESTS:
    - PRAM AND SMC rests were done, but this made no change.
    - Safe boot and login with another account didnt change anything
    - Disk doesnt appear on disk utility
    - Did another update of OS X 10.8.2
    - The external drive works fine on other macs and PCs so the external drive it self is fine.
    - All the USB ports are fully funcitional with other USB sticks and External hard drives.
    PROBLEM:
I believe and so does the apple care, that the computer is no longer supplying sufficient power to the external drive in order for it to run.
    Does anyone know a fix?
OR, is it possible that a hard disk, which has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 capabilities, suddenly stops working on USB 3.0 ports but continues working on a USB 2.0 port? I have no other USB3.0 ports in my hands in order to test the device!
