DiskManagementTool / system.volume.unmount authentication problem

I have an OS X server that has both SCSI and SATA external drives. I have found that a non-Admin user cannot unmount or eject a drive without an administrator password, as the Finder is requesting access to system.volume.unmount. There is a fix to this by modifying the /etc/authorization file, as inelegant as that may be.
My problem is that mounting a SCSI (or SATA drive) in Disk Utility appears to require administrator access to 'make changes to DiskManagementTool' for the same system.volume.unmount right. The only workaround I've found so far is to make the unprivileged user a member of the Administrator group. This is far from ideal, and a major security problem.
Has anyone else found this problematic and seen a fix for it?
Thanks!

    Hi Tracy,
Have you changed something on your SharePoint 2007 environment recently before this issue occurred?
This issue may be related to Alternate Access Mappings settings like the following similar post, if you have configured AAM, you can check if this issue happened to some URLs, if it's the case, please add the problematic URLs as a Publish URLs for the default
zone for your web application, and also add these URLs as trusted locations, then check results again.
If above doesn't work, please enable ULS log on verbose level to get more useful log errors which time are corresponding to the errors occur.

    Web Service Authentication problem
Posted: Jun 17, 2005 3:32 PM        Reply      E-mail this post
    Hi
I have created a portal service and exposed this service as a webservice. I am consuming this webservice in webdynpro. Portal service contains 2 simple methods putdata() and getdatat().
When i access the webservice i am getting the following error.
"javax.xml.rpc.soap.SOAPFaultException: The User Authentification is not correct to access to the Portal Service com.sap.portal.prt.soap.GlobalData or the service was not found"
My Enterprise portal server is configured for SSO to back end R/3 system. I have checked for portal service availability and it is fine.
My Webdynpro and Portal are running on different machines. EP is running on AIX with SP11.
    Any help please.
    Regards
    NagaKishore V

    Hi Shahab,
Can you reproduce the issue if you create 2 applications. One that exposes a secured web service and the other one the one, consumes the web service? This would help to isolate the issue and move forward in case is a bug.
    Thanks,
    Juan Camilo

  • Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - Cluster Sharded Storage - VHDX unexpectedly gets copied to System Volume Information by "System", Virtual Machines stops respondig

We have a problem with one of our deployments of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with a 2 node cluster connected to a iSCSI SAN.
    Our setup:
Hosts - Both run Windows Server 2012 Standard and are clustered.
HP ProLiant G7, 24 GB RAM. This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
HP ProLiant G5, 20 GB RAM. This is the secondary host that and is intended to be used in case of failure of the primary host.
We have no antivirus on the hosts and the scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off.
    iSCSI SAN:
    QNAP NAS TS-869 Pro, 8 INTEL SSDSA2CW160G3 160 GB i a RAID 5 with a Host Spare. 2 Teamed NIC.
    Switch:
DLINK DGS-1210-16 - Both the network cards of the Hosts that are dedicated to the Storage and the Storage itself are connected to the same switch and nothing else is connected to this switch.
    Virtual Machines:
    3 Windows Server 2012 Standard - 1 DC, 1 FileServer, 1 Application Server.
1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Exchange Server.
All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
    Updates
We have applied the most resent updates to the Hosts, VMs and iSCSI SAN about 3 weeks ago with no change in our problem and we continually update the setup.
    Normal operation:
Normally this setup works just fine and we see no real difference in speed in startup, file copy and processing speed in LoB applications of this setup compared to a single host with two 10000 RPM Disks. Normal network speed is 10-200 Mbit, but occasionally
we see speeds up to 400 Mbit/s of combined read/write for instance during file repair.
    Our Problem:
Our problem is that for some reason a random VHDX gets copied to System Volume Information by "System" of the Clusterd Shared Storage (i.e. C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\System Volume Information).
All VMs stops responding or responds very slowly during this copy process and you can for instance not send CTRL-ALT-DEL to a VM in the Hyper-V console, or for instance start task manager when already logged in.
This happens at random and not every day and different VHDX files from different VMs gets copied each time. Some time it happens during daytime wich causes a lot of problems, especially when a 200 GB file gets copied (which take a lot of time).
    What it is not:
We thought that this was connected to the backup, but the backup had finished 3 hours before the last time this happended and the backup never uses any of the files in System Volume Information so it is not the backup.
    An observation:
When this happend today I switched on ShadowCopy (previous files) and set it to only to use 320 MB of storage and then the Copy Process stopped and the virtual Machines started responding again. This could be unrelated since there is no way to see
how much of the VHDX that is left to be copied, so it might have been finished at the same time as I enabled  ShadowCopy (previos files).
    Our question:
Why is a VHDX copied to System Volume Information when scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off? As far as I know, nothing should be copied to this folder when this functionis switched off?

Please only answer our question and do not offer any general optimization tips that do not directly adress the issue! We want the problem to go away, not to finish a bit faster!

    Hallo Lawrence!
Thankyou for youre reply, some comments to help you and others who read this thread:
First of all, we use Windows Server 2012 and the VHDX as I wrote in the headline and in the text in my post. We have not had this problem in similar setups with Windows Server 2008 R2, so the problem seem to be introduced in Windows Server 2012.
These posts that you refer to seem to be outdated and/or do not apply to our configuration:
    The post about Dynamic Disks:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee941151(v=WS.10).aspx is only a recommendation for Windows Server 2008 R2 and the VHD format. Dynamic VHDX is indeed recommended by Microsoft when using Windows Server 2012 (please look in the optimization guide
    for Windows Server 2012).
Infact, if we use fixed VHDX then we would have a bigger problem since fixed VHDX are generaly larger then Dynamic Disks, i.e. more data would be copied and that would take longer time = the VMs would be unresponsive for a longer time.
The post "What's the deal with the System Volume Information folder"
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2003/11/20/55764.aspx is for Windows XP / Windows Server 2003 and some things has changed since then. for instance In Windows Server 2012, Shadow Copies cannot be controlled by going to Control panel -> System.
Instead you right-click on a Drive (i.e. a Volume, for instance the C drive/Volume) in Computer and then click "Configure Shadow Copies".
Windows Server 2008 R2 Backup problem
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsbackup/thread/0fc53adb-477d-425b-8c99-ad006e132336 - This post is about the Antivirus software trying to scan files used during backup that exists in the System Volume Information folder and we do not
have any antivirus software installed on our hosts as I stated in my post.
    Comment that might help us:
So according to “System Volume Information” definition, the operation you mentioned is Volume Shadow Copy. Check event viewer to find Volume Shadow Copy related event logs and post them.
    Why?
Furhter investigation suggests that a volume shadow copy is somehow created even though the Schedule for Shadows Copies is turned off for all drives. This happens at random and we have not found any pattern. Yesterday this operation took almost all available
disk space (over 200 GB), but all the disk space was released when I turned on scheduled Shadow Copies for the CSV.
    I therefore draw these conclusions:
The CSV Volume has about 600 GB of disk space and since Volume Shadows Copy used 200 GB, or about 33% of the disk space, and the default limit is 10% then I conclude that for some reason the unscheduled Volume Shadow Copy did not have any limit (or ignored
    the limit).
When I turned on the Schedule I also change the limit to the minimum amount which is 320 MB and this is probably what released the disk space. That is, the unscheduled Volume Shadow Copy operation was aborted and it adhered to the limit and deleted the
Volume Shadow Copy it had taken.
I have also set the limit for Volume Shadow Copies for all other volumes to 320 MB by using the "Configure Shadow Copies" Window that you open by right clicking on a drive (volume) in Computer and then selecting "Configure Shadow Copies...".
It is important to note that setting a limit for Shadow Copy Storage, and disabaling the Schedule are two different things! It is possible to have unlimited storage for Shadow Copies when the Schedule is disabled, however I do not know if this was the case
Before I enabled Shadow Copies on the CSV since I did not look for this.
I now have defined a limit for Shadow Copy Storage to 320 MB on all drives and then no VHDX should be copied to System Volume Information since they are all larger than 320 MB.
Does this sound about right or am I drawing the wrong conclusions?

There is something strange about the limits on the Secondary host!
I have not in any way changed the settings on the Secondary host and as you can see, the Secondary host has a maximum limit of only 35 MB storage on the CSV, but it also shows that this is 10% of the Volume. This is clearly not the case since 10% if 600
    GB = 60 GB!
The question is, why does it by default set a too small limit (i.e. < 320 MB) on the CSV and is this the cause of the problem? I.e. is the limit ignored since it is smaller than the smallest amount you can provide using the GUI?
Is the default 35 MB maximum Shadow Copy limit a bug, or is there any logical reason for setting a limit that according to the GUI is too small?

  • External Speakers - System Volume at Startup

I recently hooked external speakers up to my macbook, and I've been experiencing an annoying problem. Whenever I start or restart the macbook, the system volume turns itself down to 50 percent, i.e at the time I shut the macbook down, the system volume is up to max volume; I then restart and it turns down to 50 percent.
Any ideas on how I can get it to stay at 100 percent unless I turn it down manually -- the same way the internal speakers work -- or is this just a system quirk designed to protect my sensitive ears and/or speakers?

    Hi
You should be able to set the startup volume setting to whatever you like using MacOS X's Automator. The appropriate script is in the "System" category. Just modify it by putting the slider to the desired value. You don't have to save after the modification because it's a standard startup script that is used by MacOS X itself automatically after reboot.

  • Email authentication problem on only some of Verizon's servers

I use Eudora 6.2.4 on an iMac Core 2 Duo 2.0 20" (Al) Macintosh running OX 10.5.5.  Like many others (see one thread each under FiOS Internet and High Speed Internet and Dialup), since about mid-November, I have been receiving intermittent (about 10% of the time) authentication errors when Eudora checks for new mail.  I have 3 VZ e-mail accounts and one at my employer; the errors occur only on the VZ accounts.
I've used the freeware app Eavesdrop (http://code.google.com/p/eavesdrop/) to observe the TCP conversations between Eudora and the server. The VZ server offers SASL CRAM-MD5 PLAIN, and Eudora uses CRAM-MD5.  I see the challenge from the server, Eudora's response, and the server's authentication-failure response.  Since the response is hashed, I have no way of telling if Eudora is sending the correct response, but it works most of the time.  (After it fails, Eudora then assumes its stored password is NG, discards it, and prompts me for it on the next mail-check, which is just a bit annoying.)
Here is an example of a successful mail-check:

    -ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed
You'll notice that the VZ server identifies itself at the onset of each conversation, including a build ID and date, followed by a timestamp and a server ID (e.g., vms109.mailsrvcs.net).  I'm in eastern Massachusetts, and when my client connects to incoming.verizon.net, one of a pool of V servers responds.  I've observed about 15 different servers, of which two (vms171011 and vms171013) show "6.3-7.04 (built Sep 26 2008)" and all the others show "6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006)".  Furthermore, I observe that vms171011 and vms171013 consistently give this authentication failure for CRAM-MD5, but all the others (with the older build) consistently succeed in authenticating my accounts.
I called FiOS Support, and the CSR took down took down some relevant info, said she'd pass it on the the e-mail folks.  Within 2 hours I got a call from a Verizon tech.  He said they "knew" about it and that it was a Mac problem.  It wasn't specific to VZ, and it occurred only on Macs.   He had no explanation for my observation that mail-check authentication works with 13 of VZ's servers and consistently fails with two which have a later build version/date, but he believed it was consistent with it being an Apple problem.  So naturally he was off the hook.
He referred me to an Apple Support Forum discussion to back up his position.  I hadn't seen (or thought of looking in) the Apple forums, so I had a look and found a total of 5 threads under "Mail and Address Book".  Of course, these deal with Mail.app, .  Comcast as well as VZ.  This is the lengthiest of them:
      http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8478765#8478765
These Apple discussion threads and the two Verizon Forum threads all mention Macintoshes, which lends credence to the tech's assertion that it's a Mac problem, not Verizon's.  I've found one that seems to depict the same thing on a PC (http://groups.google.com/group/comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows/browse_thread/thread/b426c0ca59841ca9), but it's not conclusive.
I don't know what PeeCee users use for a mail client or what method they use for authentication (the POP3 protocol, as amended, has several possibilities).  My Eudora app has settings for "Password", "Kerberos", and "APOP", but VZ doesn't offer Kerberos, and Eudora seems to ignore the APOP setting, so it uses only the CRAM-MD5 method, so I'm stuck.  I can't disprove that this is a Mac-only problem, but I can't understand why the CRAM-MD5 authentication always works with 13 of VZ's servers and always fails with 2 others (which happen to have a different build version/date).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

With the help of a Windows-using friend, I have additional evidence that the mail-check authentication problem is NOT Mac-specific, but also can be shown to occur with a POP3 client (the final version, Eudora 7.1.0.9) using a secure authentication method (APOP) on Windows (XP Home, SP 3).  He had been observing no authentication problems, but investigation showed that his authentication setting was for "Password", which uses the basic (and very insecure) USER/PASS messages.  His Eudora does not allow CRAM-MD5, but it does have APOP authentication, which is another secure method that also uses the MD5 algorithm to encrypt the password.
When he changed the setting to use APOP authentication, he observed the same behavior that I've reported above:
       - with most of the VZ servers (e.g., vms095.mailsrvcs.net, vms104.mailsrvcs.net) that show "6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006)", the authentication succeeds
       - with vms171011.mailsrvcs.net and vms171013.mailsrvcs.net, which show "6.3-7.04 (built Sep 26 2008)", the authentication fails.
    See examples below.
Here's a successful mail-check (these excerpts are from the Eudora log; I've edited his username):

IMHO all this evidence validates my original hypothesis, that two (or more) of VZ's mail servers, which have server builds "6.3-7.04 (built Sep 26 2008)", advertise secure CRAM-MD5 and APOP authentication capabilities, but consistently fail such authentication attempts.  All the other servers with builds "6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006)" handle these authentications correctly.  This has been shown to be the case on both Mac and Windows POP3 email clients.  Email clients that use the simpler and unsecure USER/PASS and AUTH PLAIN methods apparently see no authentication errors on any of the VZ servers.  This strongly points to this being a Verizon problem specific to two of the servers that we see here in eastern Massachusetts.  Others have also observed the same server-specificity; see for example http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=13802 .  This problem has been reported since about mid-November.

  • "$RECYCLE.BIN" and "System Volume Information" on a hard drive connected to EA4500

    Hello
I've bought WD Elements 3 TB USB 2.0 External HD WDBAAU0030HBK hard drive for my Linksys EA4500. The hard drive was NTFS formatted. After I plugged it in I see "$RECYCLE.BIN" and "System Volume Information" folders on it via my Windows Explorer. I know these folders to be Windows system folders, but my hard drive is now connected to router. So do I really need them, or can I safely remove them?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The EA4500 does not have to anything with these folders popping-up since they appear on the computer by its design- system file and cannot be deleted permanently. I had read some notes on how to hide these files; you can try these if you want:
It works as a part of recycle bin in your desktop. To make this disappear, go to Tools > Folder Options > View and uncheck “Hide protected operating system files”. System Volume Information is where windows system restore files are located. If you do not want to use this folder then disable System Restore.
But just to be safe, leave it as is. This should not make any issues or problems in accessing the files from the HD using the computers connected to the EA4500.

  • Adjust system volume without the keyboard (broken button)

My T60p keyboard is non-functional, and when it bit the bullet the system volume was set to 40%. I have an external USB keyboard with hotkeys that can mute, but not adjust the sound levels. The windows volume is at maximum, but even then nothing is really loud, even with my external speakers at maximum or headphones. Is there anyway to adjust the volume through menus that don't include ANY keys on the standard keyboard? This includes the volume keys and any FN combinations, since the keyboard is totally dead. I could, in theory, re-map keys on my external to act like the FN key, IF that would solve the problem quickly.

  • System Volume information

    Hello,
When i plug in my USB Drive or SD card into my notebook all the copied files appears like a shortcut but when i double click on it ot opens normally and even when i copy file or folders from my pc to the usb it automaticly transformes into shortcut and the SYSTEM VOLUME IFORMATION folder is appearing so how to stop this thing?

    Hello,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.
I suspect your computer might be infected by malware. Please, scan your computer with some utilities such as:
    ESET Online Scanner => http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2921&locale=en_US
    HitmanPro => http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/
Trend Micro House Call => http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Once the scans are completed, remove any virus/malware that was found. Scan your removable media drives (scan your flash drives, cards, etc) too and clean them.
Finally, you need to manually fix the hidden and shortcut files on the USB pen drive/memory card.
Run these programs with your USB pen drive and card plugged in:
    Shortcut cleaner => http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/shortcut-cleaner/
    Unhide => http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/unhide/
You may also need to fix/unhide the files from the pen drive => http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/
Please, report back the results. Feel free to post again and ask questions if something is not clear.

  • Alert volume not dictated by system volume

I have recently updated from a 2nd Gen iPod to a 4th Gen. On my old iPod, the volume dictated the volume of push alerts this seems to not be the case on the new one. The push alerts volume stays the same volume whether the system volume is all the way up or even muted. Why is this the case, and how can I fix this?

This is a problem that both I and a co-worker are experiencing AND we have already verified that the "Change with Buttons" is set to on, have rebooted phones, changed tones, ...etc.
But in my case my alerts from applications, mail, texts, ...etc. are much louder than the system wide volume set for the ring tone and in the case of my co-worker his alerts are much lower in volume than his ringtone.
I am wonder if this might be a small undocumented feature, sometimes known as a bug, might be tied into some other volume setting activity such as adjusting the phone volume during a call?

  • E71 system volume for applications

Is there a way to change the overall volume level of the loudspeaker when running applications? Every game I've tried I have to turn the sound off because the speaker seems obnoxiously loud. The volume buttons on the side don't seem to work except for a few apps like realplayer or when making a call.

I don't know if my phone is defective or if it is just something we all have to live with. Could anyone else check to see if they have the same problem and let me know?
    Steps to replicate:
    1) Menu->Installed Applications
    2) Open the EA Sports Tiger Woods Golf game that comes with the phone
    3) The black screen opens and says "All Sound". Click the Left select button underneath the word "ON"
    4) Loud game music begins as the game opens. Try to lower the volume with the E71's built in down volume button on the side. On my phone this does not change the volume is this normal???
    5) On game menu select options, note there are no options included in this game to change the volume level, so it has to be done somehow from the phones system volume but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this. Or is there?
I hope I am missing something really basic here. Its not just this game I have this problem with I have the same issue with every game I've tried. Is there no way to change the overall system volume on this phone?
    Thanks.

  • When I mute system volume, why doesn't iTunes mute too?

Currently my iTunes plays through AirTunes on an Airport Express.
I'd like the F3, F4, and F5 keys to control iTunes volume. As it is, when I hit F3 (mute), it mutes system sounds but does nothing for iTunes volume - it keeps playing. That's annoying when I have a phone call and want to quickly mute everything. I also can't change the volume with F4 and F5. I have to switch to iTunes and manually drag the slider.
I'm pretty sure the F-keys used to work with my system volume, but somehow now they don't.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I would try playing the music through the built in speakers and see if the problem is still there. Both the built in speakers and the headset jack are both controlled by the system volume. My desk top unit plays the audio through the USB port to my speakers and it is muted by the master mute control. Using WiFi may have totally different results.

Lenovo has recently opened this Security & Malware Forum so older topics are being relocated to here. I'd like to include a bit more regarding System Restore for members who come across this discussion today.
It is preferable to clean the system >disable System Restore > immediately reboot and enable it again. Why not before cleaning? That is because a dirty Restore Point is better than none at all. Malware that is in System Restore cannot get out. A user cannot be re-infected by a file that is in System Restore, unless, as mentioned above, he manually runs System Restore to revert to when he was infected.  We've also had people tell us that they disabled System Restore to run routine virus scans, and have forgotten that they have done so. Thus, they have been left with no System Restore Points for long periods. You can imagine what a problem that would be!
