Display is corrupted for GDM / Gnome (ATI card)

I've done a clean install of Arch on a Toshiba laptop, but when gdm starts the display is corrupted with lots of strange artefacts (diagonal slashes across the screen, that sort of thing). Previously Gnome/GDM worked fine on this same laptop.
When I try running startx with xorg-twm installed, the screen displays fine, so I don't think it can be an Xorg problem per se.
Any help will be gratefully received!

Am running the latest 64-bit kernel and have latest xf86-video-ati driver installed. System is generally up to date - though the problem goes back to when I did the install two or three weeks ago, so it's not to do with any new version since then.

  • ATI card image on display at restart

    Maybe someone else has seen this.
    The machine has a ATI 9800 128 from ATI. The card has been replaced by ATI for various reasons other than this.
    This last replacement card works perfect untill I have to do a software update that requires me to do a restart. On restart I get a card image of the card with the external power leads to the molex connector blinking red and the OS does not load.
    I checked the voltage on the connector and all of the voltages are there and are right on spec. The fan on the card is running.
    If I shut the machine down and power up the next day everything is ok untill the next restart.
    The machine has no issues with the OEM ATI 9000 card even on restart.
    ATI says its an Apple problem.
    Apple says the machine has no issues with the OEM ATI card. (Will not test the machine with the updated ATI 9800 128 card)
    Does anyone know what card image of the card with the external power leads to the molex connector blinking red really means?

  • No kext for Xserve's ATI RAGE 128 in Leopard

    Xserve running OS X Server 10.5.2
    The Xserve has an ATI RAGE 128 PCI graphics card from an old G3 Blue & White. System Profiler shows no kext loaded for the graphics card. The monitor displays OK, but ScreenSharing and Timbuktu both display ragged text and graphics when connecting to the Xserve.
    The Extensions for the older ATI RAGE 128 graphics cards are absent from Leopard, since it isn't spec'ed to run on the B&W.
    Has anyone tried using the ATI RAGE 128 Extensions from Tiger in Leopard?
    Has anything changed in the way extensions are implemented that would cause Tiger's ATI RAGE 128 Extensions to fail?

    The Rage 128 Pro has all the drivers it needs in OSX, and OS9.2x. Since ATI considers it a discontinued product, they do not supply any drivers or support for it anymore. Try a google search for a manual, you might find one. Make sure to look for the Mac Rage 128 when you look it up.
    Here is the thing, because these cards were shipped OEM by Apple (not retail) they didn't come with any cables or manuals, that I am aware of. You might find one for a similar Mac ATI Rage 128 based video card.

  • Fresh Win7 install S410 won't reconise ATI card

    I recently purchased an S410 and installed Windows 7, I've installed all the drivers and everything works fine except the ATI graphics card.
    I have installed the correct drivers from this site but I can't figure out how to get the computer to use the card. 
    In the device manager there is a yellow flag by the ATI card and the ATI catalyst control centre has no option, jsut a webpage. (Looks like this: http://imgur.com/kYkJN8q ) Now I may be wrong but on previous computers it had more options.
    I'm at a loss now as to how to get my computer to use the TI card, so if anyone has any suggestions they would be extremely welcome.
    As a second issue the intel graphics chipset drivers won't install, instead I get this message at the end of installation:
    "This computer does not meet the mim=nimum requirements for installing this software"

    Disable GDM and see if you can boot into the basic system.
    As the IG and BG suggest, it's best to reboot just after installing the basic system. When it comes time to install X, take baby steps, testing and rebooting as necessary.

  • Dual Apple LED  Display (24") with NVIDIA GeForce GT120 & ATI RadeonHD4870

    I have recently purchased a MacPro4,1 Processor Name:Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz with 6GB memory with the NVIDIA GeForce GT120. Then I purchased a ATI Radeon HD 4870 to be able to run the 2 Apple Cinema displays and an external monitor.
    I installed the ATI in slot 1 and the GT120 in slot 3. I use different motion software and the computer seems to recognize as the primary card the GT120 and not the ATI. This creates a problem with the different software I use as it uses for processing and rendering the GT120 and not the ATI faster card.
    This is also visible when I go to system preferences and change the display preferences and try to shift them around, the first display is the one that has the GT120 card (which is in slot 3)!!!
    Also sometimes I get funny characters in some windows.
    I spent the extra dollars to get an ATI card but I am not using its capabilities which is inviting me to disconnect the GT120 card... but then I cannot use the second Apple LED display due to its Apple's miserable connector policy. This is telling me that next time I should not buy the monitors from Apple as its connectors are not trully compatible with the hardware they sell.
    I searched everywhere but cannot find similar cases which is very strange. Any solution friends?

    You could remove the NVIDIA GT120 and connect the second display to the ATI card's DVI port with a DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter.

  • Nvidia card giving me same trouble as Ati card

    Okay, originally I was using a Radeon 9500 Pro video card.  The problem was that anything OGL accelerated completely froze my system; I couldn't run glxgears without it freezing.  I tried and tried and tried to find a solution to the problem, using the open source drivers v. proprietary ones, minimal xorg.conf files, whatever.  Nothing worked.  Same symptoms on Ubuntu and Arch.  Since I was dual booting with Windows, I tried the card on Windows; it worked fine with any 3d application (I even tried Planet Penguin Racer so I could use the same game on each OS.  Windows could handle it, Linux froze as soon as the game booted up everytime.)
    So I ordered an Nvidia 6200 to hopefully remedy the problem because I assumed it was a video driver problem.  I installed the card, pacman'd the nvidia drivers, generated a xorg.conf and rebooted.  I made it to the desktop and typed glxinfo into the console.  I had direct rendering and everything seemed to be okay.  I ran glxgears.  1600fps, 1600fps, 1600fps... boom, my computer went back to KDM.  Uh oh.  I logged back in and ran glxgears again, except this time it hard froze JUST LIKE my Ati card.  Big uh oh.  I powered down and powered back on (because alt-ctrl-backspace couldn't kill X) and logged in again.  I tried to watch a video file, and it rebooted my machine.  At least my Ati card let me do that safely.  I tried again just to double check myself, and sure enough my computer FROZE again, it didn't just reboot.  Now here I am, out of options.
    Obviously there is something wrong with my machine somewhere, whether it be buried deep within Linux or my motherboard or god knows where else.  What I want to know is how I can diagnose this problem?  I'm not going back to Windows, there are too many reasons for me to stay in Linux (most are for development reasons as I'm a CS major, but the media applications are way better in Linux too.)
    In summary, is there anything I can do to remedy or diagnose my problem?  This is very frustrating... I can't afford a new computer to 'start over' and buy hardware that I KNOW is compatible. 
    Edit/Update:  I reinstalled my Ati card because I'm going to RMA the Nvidia one.  I've got a working xorg.conf file (at least, it can connect to the Xserver).  However, it always freezes when I load KDE, before it even makes it past that loading bar and to the desktop.  I don't know what causes it, but I do know that I can run TWM without it crashing AND I have direct rendering.  Any ideas how I can remedy this?

    I had this on my desktop - I had switched from ATI to NVIDIA and as a result, all my 3d/videos kept freezing or crashing - turns out it was a conflict with the libGL libraries. I had some wrongly-linked files left over.
    You could try removing mesa (which shouldn't be on your system), and reinstalling the nvidia driver, and checking the system for any stray libGL.so.* libraries.

  • Looking for a good graphics card for World of Warcraft

    I've been looking around these forums and it seems like the consensus is to go with the ATI HD 4870. I'm more a fan of NVidia, but if it works it works.
    I have a first gen mac pro and just want to confirm that the ATI card will work on my machine. Right now I'm still using the stock (6800?) card and WoW doesn't look all that great at it's optimal settings on a 1900x1200 display - I'd like to maximize the settings as much as possible.
    I am completely open to any other suggestions though. On the side I do some graphical work with Maya and Photoshop so any new card should certainly help out with those as well.

    Nvidia 8800GT EFI32 version
    You must purchase the Mac Pro version of these. With the 8800GT, it needs to be the EFI32 version for 2006/07 Mac Pro.
    Sadly, neither the 2600 not the 8800 are easily available new. (at a reasonable price) EBay or your local Craigslist (in big city)

  • Display Ports : Adding NVidia GT-120 Graphics Card to Mac Pro

    Just installed the Base NV GT-120 graphics card in order to use the new Mac Cinema Display 24".
    Also still running the original ATI HD 2600 card.
    Installation was easy.....
    The ATI card runs a 20" Cinema Display and the 24" is on the new NV card.
    GREAT picture on the 24" Display!
    Just to let you know....The MDP cannot be the primary port for the display. That is all the dock/menus are all on the "smaller" or display on the DVI port.
    UNLESS you re-write the code in terminal....which Apple support advised me not to....
    Any thoughts/ advice?

    1. open your "System Preferences" and click on "Displays".
    2. select the tab "Arrange", you will see two blue rectangles which represent your two displays. you can drag those rectanglea to change the arrangement of your screens.
    3. in one rectangle you see a small white rectangle on top. this is representing your menu bar. just drag the menubar to your desired primary screen. close the preferences and that's it.

  • ATI card not recognised

    I have New Macbook Pro 15inch bought 2 months ago. I upgraded to new OSX Lion however I just noticed that the ATI card does not have a display attached to it and the computer is running on the built in Intel Graphics. As a result the animations have become really choppy. Is there any way to get the ATI card recognised? Why does it not have a display connected to it? I haven't done anything to the computer except for the official updates.

  • 2x ATI cards, 2x dual-link monitors. How to make it work?

    As per the subject, I have 2 ATI cards, they both seem to be detected/initialised by the kernel OK on bootup and are listed in lspci. I need two cards as I want to power two large displays which require dual-link dvi connections.
    I can see from the X.org log that X only detects one of the cards, even if I specify two device sections with the relevant busID of each card in the xorg.conf. X just seems to complete ignore it. I'm using the open source radeon driver with an up-to-date arch system.  This has been driving me crazy for a couple of weeks now, to the point where I'm considering getting another PC to use to power the second screen!!

  • Options for adding 2nd video card to MacPro 1,1?

    I want to add a second video card to my Mac Pro 1,1 so I can connect a third display.
    I currently have a Radeon 4870 in the PCIe x16 slot, and the three other PCI x8 slots are still open.
    What are my options for adding a second ATI card to one of the PCI x8 slots? Would prefer a Mac native card that doesn't require any flashing.
    I'm running latest version of OS X Lion.

    You have different ways of configuring the PCIe slots, but you don't have 16x along with 3 x 8x,
    One 8x
    One 4x
    One 1x
    One 16x
    Is normal setup.
    Lots of choices, if you look on Apple Store <g> (5770), or ebay: 8800GT and other 3rd party vendors.
    If the 4870 uses just one aux power cable, I'd get the 5770 as primary card.
    The 5770 can drive 3 displays but depends on resolution and cost of dual-link DVI if req'd.

  • HW acceleration problem with ATI cards

    Hello all. This is my first post here
    I have noticed the following issue/problem and would like your feedback about it.
    We have a lot of intel macs here at the office (15 macs).
    Most of them are intel imacs using ATI graphics.
    We also have an intel macmini with a nvidia 9400 graphics card, a macbook pro 17inch, core 2 duo with nvidia graphics etc.
    My personal macs are:
    1) a macpro 1.1 (upgraded to 2.1) with (upgraded) 2 x5365 xeon cpus @ 3ghz (8 core machine), 10GB ram, ΑΤΙ HD 4870 1GB, INTEL 80GB G2 SSD ...
    2) an imac 2.93Ghz i7 27inch, with 16GB RAM and an ATI 5xxx card (i do not remember the exact model, i think it is the 5770 card as a successor to the 4850 card).
    I have noticed the following issue on ALL the macs i have access to: whichever mac runs nvidia card, irrespective of the specification of both the nvidia card and its cpu, has hw acceleration working properly when browsing the web.
    For example, if i visit these links:

    and i run the respective test on any of the macs we have here equipped with an ATI card i get slow frame rates, ie. on my macpro, with a dual monitor setup 2560x1600 (apple 30inch) and 1680x1050 (apple cinema display) i get 20s FPS when running the tests and this is only when using safari.
    The same applies when running these tests on my imac i7 as well as on all other macs that are running ATI hardware.
    On the contrary if i run the tests on a mac which is equipped with a nvidia card i get (depending on how old the hardware is) 50+ or even 60+ FPS.
    I do know that things are complicated with hw acceleration on OS X Lion and in particular when browsing the internet (partially working hw acceleration) but why the difference between ATI and NVIDIA?
    All drivers .kext files are original and not patched.
    When running benchmarks, the results appear on par with similar systems.
    Of course all of our macs are running OS X Lion, latest version with latest updates installed.
    Also cleared safari cache (by manually deleting the cache.db file as well), disabled all of the plug-ins, installed latest version of adobe flash, to no avail.
    I just want to know why there is different hw acceleration behaviour when running a NVIDIA instead of an ATI card on OS X LION.
    From a practical perspective i think this is why sometimes when i browse the web i have excessively cpu utilization even on powerful systems (i7, 8core macpro etc) running ATI hardware.

    i just tried the Google Chrome Beta v 18.0.1025.11 and i saw a dramatic difference. Nevertheless my question still stands: why people with NVIDIA cards on a mac do not have this problem?

  • Snow Leopard and ATI cards

    I have a 800 MHz RAM bus mac pro (a 2008 model). It shipped with an ATI Radeon 2600XT graphics card (and OSX Leopard 10.5). I then upgraded to a SECOND graphics card which is the NVIDIA 8800GT. With Leopard OS the two cards played nicely together.
    However, after upgrading to 10.6 the ATI card no longer works properly.
    booting 10.6 in 64 bit kernel (the default) with the ATI card installed is un-successful (with the ATI card in the machine, it WILL NOT BOOT.)
    My suspicion is that the ATI firmware does not support the 64bit kernel because when I boot the mac pro in 32 bit kernel mode the machine boots and the ATI card is recognized (displayed in system profiler: BUT DOES NOT OUTPUT VIDEO!) When reverting and booting from 10.5 (anyway a 32bit kernel system) the machine boots EXTREMELY SLOW and the ATI card is visible BUT NOT USABLE. When shutting down the computer (in verbose mode) I get about 12 screens of ATI debugging codes before the machine powers off (this all flies by very very quickly).
    I see on the apple support downloads an updater called:
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Firmware Update
    HOWEVER, the installer will not let me install this update even when I do get my machine booted in Leopard with the card installed, because it tells me I need the Leopard Graphics Update (it's a 10.5.8 system...) ***?
    when i completely remove the NVIDIA card from the computer and attempt to ONLY use the ATI card, nothing works. NADA.
    Is my only chance to get 4 video outputs from this machine to buy a second 8800GT?
    I know that the ATI card is not fried, but that there is a driver or firmware problem. how can I fix this issue? thanks in advance,

    ATI 2600XT is an iffy card.
    Early shipped models of that card had a firmware update, newer cards were 'fixed' and didn't need the firmware update. Firmware only seemed to make its fans run more and be louder and was annoying.
    A lot of things happened with 10.6.4 and graphics. Even video out issue. Some have downgraded to 10.6.3.
    There are 4 other options also:
    GT120 is cheap and fine
    8800GT is EOL and ebay only, and look for "2nd generation Apple Mac Pro"
    ATI 4870 or wait to see if Apple comes out with 5800s
    Nvidia GTX 285 ($450)
    Some cards require 2 power connectors, the GT120 does not need any.
    Wait for 10.6.5+ or downgrade to 10.6.3 and see how that works
    Mac Pro 2008 required an EFI on graphics cards to work with the UEFI/EFI64 so I am unsure that the card or its BIOS is an issue... but haven't seen much of that.
    10.5.2 era there was a Leopard Graphics 1.0 update that was rolled into 10.5.3.
    I'd ditch and get the GT120 or wait and see if GT3xx.
