Display is gradually dimming / losing it's brightness

For the past few weeks, each time I open up my 15-inch Powerbook G4 I try to increase the contrast (F2) only to find that it's already at the max. I don't know if it's me but it seems like the display is not as bright as it used to be and each week it's getting dimmer. Is this possible? Has this happened to others? How can I fix this? I use this Powerbook at work (specifically to DJ weddings) and it would be disastrous if all of a sudden I lost my display. I'm just wondering if there is a way to increase the brightness or get it checked somehow and if this has happened to anyone else.
Thanks!
Al

Replacing just the backlight is said to be extremely difficult. I don't think you can even get Apple to do it. To achieve the low weight and thinness that Apple and its customers love, the display consists of a lot of delicately thin pieces glued together with special adhesives. From what I've read on the Web, to replace the backlight you must successfully disassemble that without breaking anything, and then successfully apply the correct adhesives to get it back together, and again without breaking, scratching, or smearing glue on anything.
The other reason Apple doesn't make the bulb easy to replace is because it's assumed that it will maintain usable brightness for the 3-5 years until you will decide to get a new laptop anyway.
As for how to extend bulb life, it's hard to say. Some people say you should limit the number of hours it's on, so they set screen sleep to happen rather quickly. Other say you actually stress the bulb more by frequently flipping it off and on, and they say that fewer and more continuous "on" sessions are better. I don't know who's right. The only thing everyone agrees on is that the bulb lasts longer when dimmer.

  • L540 FHD display quality -when dimmed, and at full brightness?

    I'm decided on the L540 FHD, 1920x1080.
Since the L540 FHD is LED-backlit, and potentially different in TN technology,
I'm wondering how it looks compared to a T500 WSXGA+ CCFL,
and also how well the LED backlit looks when dimmed.
         Currently have a T500 15.4" WSXGA+ 1680x1050 CCFL stock display. 128ppi.
My satisfaction with this display is 8 out of 10.  I regularly dim it to 50% or less at night.
Use is 60% firefox browsing, 30% online videos, 10% movies.
The L540 FHD should be just noticably crisper in terms of ppi (141ppi, vs T500's 128ppi).

Given you can show both these issues I would think there will be no problem getting these fixed.
As for timing, one option you have is to take it to an Apple Authorised Service Centre and have then sight the issues they can order in the parts and then call you in when they have them and can do the repairs. This way you can have you PowerBook actually out of your hands for like 24 hours. This is what I do.

  • Macbook screen is dim and cannot change brightness

For the last couple of days, my macbook's screen has been more dim than normal, and i haven't been able to change it. Nothing happens when i press F2 or FN+F2. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with having the macbook connected to my samsung lcd tv via a mini display to HDMI adapter. It's not connected anymore, but it's been happening since i've done that.
When i go to display settings, there is no setting for brightness.
Please help! this is so hard on my eyes!

If that does not work then i would suggest resetting the PRAM (which stores system settings)
However before you do so make sure you understand what you are going to loose, so read up about it here first:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
    -Resetting PRAM and NVRAM-
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • Macbook Pro display fails to dim fully

    MacBookPro5,1; 2009, 10.5.8
When I manually dim from the keyboard key, there's a residual light spot in middle, roughly at the last brightness level before full fade.  Grabber doesn't capture what I see, so can't post an example.
When I'm in full dim (with lit spot in middle) and go to lower right corner (to sleep the display), the brighter spot disappears for a fraction of a second, then re-appears as grey.  Same when waking it up again.
    Known problem? Hardware? Software?
Nothing to worry about or sign of imminent display failure?

I have this problem also and have found that nothing seems to prevent the display from dimming, even while viewing a quicktime movie the display will automatically dim regardless of Energy Saver settings, just seems inoperative in controlling the dimming behavior of the display.

  • My 13.3" MacBook Air laptop display is very dim

My 13.3" MacBook Air display is dim. i checked the brightness keys no go. I then just verified with the external display output on the laptop & i have picture. so I checked some settings & on the Nvidia graphics card it says the lamp is off. My laptop is less then a year old. Will apple replace the back light lamp or do i have to pay for it out of pocket & do it myself?

    Hi
If the backlight has indeed failed, and it was not accidental damage etc, then Apple should replace it for you under warranty.
I would take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) for evaluation.

Pls its very urgent - i dropped by iphone 3G and the display became very dim soon after and it still remains the same - pls advise what should be done to bring the display back to normal

sounds like you broke the display when you dropped it.  There's nothing we users here can do for you.
Since the iPhone warranty does not cover accidental damage, you will have to pay to have your phone repaired or replaced.  You can bring it into Apple for an out of warranty exchange in the country of purchase, or you can find a 3rd party iPhone repair store in your area.

  • Satellite P200 Display is really dim

My P200 is having display problems (very dim screen). It is just over 1 year old (4 days past 1 year) and I am really not impressed. It works fine with an external monitor. I'm hoping this is not an ongoing problem, as I just recently bought a second Toshiba laptop.
From what I have been reading, it seems there may be some problem with the inverter needing to be re-seated or replaced?? Please respond as I am considering getting rid of both laptops now and trying another brand!

I think the sensor is part of the motherboard but cannot say exactly where it could be located.
But as far as I know the JP9 connector (40pin) is used to connect the display.
However, in my personal opinion its not a sensor issue
If something is wrong with display, you might need to replace either, LCD panel, FL inverter or should check the connection from display to motherboard

  • Display no longer dims after 3.6.4???

Kind of noticed this throughout the course of the day so I just tested it to be sure and after testing I'm positive that ever since around the time of the update today my display no longer dims.
Screensaver still works fine though. Guess if you're using a desktop this doesn't really matter
but on a laptop you need every ounce of juice out of the battery you can muster.
My overall experience of this update has not been a good one. Not that anything really negative has happened. I haven't encountered the problems other people are but I have found three things in less than 24 hours that indicate to me that this update is vastly different than 3.6.3, which happened to work quite well for me.
    1. ValueClick Corporation (NASDAQ:VCLK) now accompanies my Google search when I use the default search bar. (For those that don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to one of the important online advertising companies trying to "help" me with my searches. This happens in the background. The only reason I noticed it is because I monitor my port activity.)
This wasn't so with prior versions of Firefox. At least as of yesterday it wasn't.
    2. Plug-in container. Added together with this new feature Firefox is now using 100-160K of RAM. That's about twice as much as the 3.6.3 version I was using previously. I'm not even sure why I need a plug-in container, considering that I have never experienced any flash or other plug-in problems in the past.
    3. You guessed it. How did you know? Oh...that's right. Like I stated before, I kind of noticed that my display wasn't dimming throughout the course of the day but didn't pay it much mind.
Now that I have time I tested it, and sure enough it is not dimming. The fact is it is no longer dimming but this may not be a Firefox issue at all, but I do know for a fact it was fine yesterday.
I did uninstall a program first thing yesterday before I connected to the internet and Firefox updated so I realize that could very well be the culprit. Either way this is a support forum so I thought I would ask if anyone else has experienced this. If not I can take a likely guess that it's my computer and not the Firefox browser.
Despite these small complaints, at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. I have windows 7 that I have already integrated with the drivers I need that I haven't gotten around to installing yet, but when I do I will happily download Firefox 3.6.3.
In reality I'm glad that Mozilla created an alternative to IE for us. I may not be thrilled with this latest version but I do know there are others that work very well for me. The Linux version on Ubuntu works like a charm too.
In a strange convoluted way I think I may be saying "thanks Mozilla".
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often

    Mathias,
Thank you for helping me (any so many others) back up and running :)
PS - Allowed my desktop (old pentium 4 running winxp) to update to FF3.6.4 and it worked just fine without the updated iMacros. Not sure what is different between the 2 machines, but figured you might like to have the info.

  • Laptop display no longer turning off at lowest brightness

As of updating my system a week or two ago, I can no longer completely turn of my laptop monitor with the backlight keys. Before, the lowest brightness setting would be a completely black monitor, but now the lowest brightness is just a dim screen. I'm not sure if this has to do with some kernel update or my desktop environment, GNOME 3. One thing that might be important, is that `xbacklight -set 0` used to turn the display off, but now it also just puts it at the lowest brightness.
Does anyone know why this is happening?

    Hi gsingh93,
first of all, xbacklight cannot completely turn off your monitor: all it can do is to set the brightness level to its minimum value (and this can result in a very very dark screen) but it will leave the lcd turned on. If you want to switch off your monitor you should follow the ArchWiki instructions).
Now, can you provide the output of the following commands?
xbacklight -set 0 && xbacklight -get
Also, what is the graphics card of your laptop? It is a dual GPU system or it has only an integrated one?
Does it work if you manually set the backlight level to zero using a command like the following?
tee /sys/class/backlight/$your_backlight/brightness <<< 0 #this must be run as root
    cat /sys/class/backlight/$your_backlight/brightness
where the value of $your_backlight depends on your graphics card model (again take a look to the ArchWiki)

markzz wrote:...but it seems that X no longer allows this to happen...
It is not true, xbacklight can set the brightness level to zero on my Samsung NP530U3C-A03IT with an integrated intel graphics card and my system is fully upgraded.

  • W520 Dim panel suddenly going bright issue

When I boot my machine, the internal panel is so dim I cant work with it. Its the equiv. of about 11 on the lenovo brightness scale of 1-15.
the brightness control FN-pg-up has no effect - its already at its brightest (it thinks).  Fn-page down makes it dimmer still.
Then I launch any program which asks for administrator permission, such as my openVPN client.  The screen gets blacked out while it asks for permission, then when it comes back to normal, a few seconds later bam- the screen is at its full brightness again.
I dont always get this, but I cant see a pattern.  It seems to be more frequently when I have an external monitor connected.
In the power manager, I have a custom profile with everything at its max (i.e max performance and max brightness).
I thought it was due to my Color Monki drivers, but I uninstlalled them, and the problem is still there.
Anyone else get this, or is It just me again?

Might be the Intel graphics card drivers. They do have a set range of brightness values that vary between versions.

  • Dual 23" displays showing distint difference in color and brightness

Today I purchased a second 23" cinema display to run a dual display set up. I am now noticing that my first display, purchased about a year ago refurbished from apple, is distinctly darker and has a slightly yellowish tint to it in comparison to the new monitor which is much brighter.
Is this a calibration issue? If so, how do I remedy it. I tried matching the profiles in sys. preferences but to no avail.
    Advice would be much appreciated.
The dual system is running on a Mac Pro 2.66ghz Dual-Core Intel.
    Thanks!

I just bought a 24" imac for video editing as I'd been getting headaches and 'heavy eyes' from working on the little macbook screen. Wasn't expecting that the size and brightness of the 24" screen would cause even worse headaches. Wearing sunglasses helps but is sort of a drag. I'd be grateful for any suggestions on finding a tinted film for the screen that isn't too messy or destructive. Thanks.

  • Display going grey (fuzzy, losing contrast)

    Hi,
I'm having problems with the display on my PowerBook. Basically the screen has lost contrast and crispness, and looks grey (see here for a picture -- hopefully).
I'm trying to work out what part could causing the problem. So far suggestions have been the inverter, the inverter cable, the screen, or the logic board. An external monitor works fine when attached. The screen brightness functions also work, although nowhere near the previous effect. When the screen faded originally the fade went from top to bottom of screen in about three seconds (not immediate) and it has been stable for a few months. The computer did get some water in it a few days before the screen went, although we tried drying it before turning it on.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Sam

No: adjusting the contrast has an effect but we lose the fine detail. Maybe it is a brightness rather than contrast issue.
I am also assuming it is a hardware fault. There was a complete reinstall of 10.4 about a month before (total drive reformat). Oh, and the hardware test did not show up any faults (apologies for missing this out before).

  • (T430) Screen slowly dims to ~30% less brightness and back

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this?  For a few months now, I've noticed that the screen sometimes appears less bright than other times, though always set at full brightness.  Well, today I was typing a message against a white background screen and noticed that, yes, the screen was slowly dimming by maybe 30% (or maybe more).  And then it would brighten back up.  All without toucing the power settings and brightness was always at full.
Does this sound like a possible software glitch to anyone or is it time to send the computer back to Lenovo, this being the second issue with the screen so far (the first one being an odd graphical glitch that I needed to send out the laptop to lenovo)?

    Hi deanp,
This is a link to another forum member that was having a similar issue:

It's not the same system but it may help provide a starting point.
