Display issue - small boxes being drawn out of place.

I am having a display issue on my desktop.  It looks like small boxes of pixels are being drawn slightly out of place.  This occurs across applications and just started after several months of usage without the problem.  The only thing that I think really changed is I updated Google Chrome.  It occurs mostly if I have a video playing on screen, but will still occur else where, generally when the screen is changing a lot (dragging windows, scrolling, etc).  I can generally see that the squares being drawn are part of the video playing, but they are drawn outside the frame of the video.
I attached ascreenshot to better exemplify what I am describing.  Has anyone seen this before and/or know how to fix it?  I have not changed my display settings since I got the computer.  Restarting the computer did not help.
Built-in iMac Display, 27-inch (2560 x 1440) AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB graphics

Thanks for your reply.  After a restart, I ran Rember on all available memory.  It used about 2.8 GB (out of 4GB) and passed every test.
I did manage to get a screenshot with the desktop itself being drawn incorrectly.  I have seen menu items at the top of Google Chrome screw up a few times, but never for Finder.
This image looks just plain wrong:
And here you can see that the some of the terminal window is not drawn, or the desktop is drawn over it (this screenshot is while the terminal is in focus):
Are there any pure graphics card tests so I can confirm that that is what is wrong?
Thanks,

  • Summary Alert Issues - Summary Alert Being Sent Out as Multiple Emails

    I'm sure many of you have seen the various posts online about Summary Alerts that are supposed to show changes over the last 24hrs in a single email being sent out as either multiple emails containing a random number of items per email, or individual emails
    for each item that was updated. The question I have is... Has this issue been resolved with SP2 or any of the Post-SP CUs?
    One of my users mentioned that the August 2014 CU was supposed to have a fix for this issue, but I am unable to find any documentation specifically mentioning alert handling or the Summary Alert issue mentioned above.
    Current Environment is SP1 + Aug 2013 CU (We're a tad behind -- but I'm working on that)
    Any information would be helpful.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    I suggest you to delete the existing Rule and setup a New Rule.
    I have tested this on my lab and it works fine.
    You might want to refer to the below article on Setting up Alert Notifications

    When I zoomout on a page firefox displays a insetted box around my images.
    Most notably in my webmail client, however it happens even on the forums if I zoomout.

    EDIT:
    After doing some more research I have narrowed this down to being an issue with xf86-video-intel. The problem does not happen if I use the xf86-video-vesa driver. I have filed a bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=468366

    Since upgrading to Mavericks, 10.9.1, pictures that come attached to emails no longer display.  There is only a blank space that after about 1 minute, has a small box with a question mark.  Double clicking on the box will open the image in a separate window.  It's very slow and tedious for multiple images.  How can I go back to attached and displayed  images?  If I click on "Forward", the images appear instantly in the email to be forwarded.

    Scott,
    My problem seemed to fix itself.  Or, by shutting down the computer one night, instead of putting it to sleep, may have reset something.  Since updating to Mavericks, I always (or usually) let the computer sleep overnight or anytime I'm walking away from it.  A few days ago, I was updating notes for my kids about how to find all my stuff and how to turn on my computer, so I wanted to rewrite the start-up procedures for the iMac, just in case they ever need to.  Well, I shut it down one night so the following morning, I could write down each step.  Lo and behold, the images, etc. are all there again!  Solved, but I'm not sure why.

    my iTunes home screen displays a lot of small boxes with the letter A in it instead of text

    Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    Also, sometimes restoring the iPod helps.

    ipod nano 7th generation having issues with the UI. Out of box everything worked great. Once I snyc the device and it finished, the UI becomes unuesable. You have to double tap every icon in order to open music, videos, etc.  I cannot swipe to the second page of icons,  black box appears around an icon and then switches to a different one anytime I swipe. A box even appears around the time and battery power. iPod & iTunes are both updated. What is the FIX on this issue?

    I had this problem as well.  This is what I found by searching online.  I tried the fix on my nano 7th gen and it worked.  I hope this helps you.  Make sure to use two fingers for sliding and double-click the icons to get into settings.  Good luck.
    It would seem that Voiceover has been enabled on your iPod Nano. The following article contains information regarding Voiceover, and how to disable it once it's been enabled.
    iPod nano (6th generation and later): How to use VoiceOver
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4317
    To turn off VoiceOver on iPod nano using VoiceOver gestures
    From the Home Screen, swipe right or left with two fingers until you see or hear "Page 2 of 2" on iPod nano (7th generation) or "Settings" on iPod (6th generation).
    If the icons have been rearranged, or if there are more than four Home screens, you may hear something different.
    Slide one finger around the screen until you hear Settings.
    Double-tap to open Settings.
    Slide your finger up or down the screen until you see or hear General, then double- tap.
    Slide your finger up or down the screen until you see or hear Accessibility, then double-tap.
    Slide your finger up or down the screen until you see or hear VoiceOver, then double-tap.
    Double-tap when you hear "VoiceOver switch button on."
    You'll hear "VoiceOver off" to confirm the setting. Now you can use standard gestures to control iPod nano.
    Note: You can also turn off VoiceOver by resetting your iPod.

  • Firefox does not display application icons. Instead I see small box outlines.

    When I run an online application, such as Horde Mail, I see no buttons, nor words that are clickable. Instead I see a small box where the button, or clickable-word, should be. The small box is rectangular, is in outline, and has four tiny characters in the middle. What are these? How do I convert them to the buttons they are supposed to be?

    Those missing icons are actually supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you can see by the little boxes that show the hex code of the characters.
    You can check the <b>gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).
    Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Using WE to display a custom box

    I have a report that I want the user to be able to sort or filter by clicking on a col header. When the user clicks on a col header, I want a small box to appear just below the col header with radio buttons to choose Asc or Desc and a drop-down list to choose a value to filter the col on.  I worked out the javascript for this in a text editor and it works (and I thought it was pretty cool). I've converted the javascript to Crystal Reports syntax and created some Webelements functions:
    This first one sets up the styles and js functions -
    // WEsortfilter
    // Add options to sort A/D and to filter on columne clicked
    // Pass in string of values from main rpt and sort ASC
    // When col header is clicked - display form with radio buttons and drop
    //      down list of values.
    //When sort is selected or member of list execute sort/filter.
    Function ()
    '<STYLE type="text/css">'
    + '.Test{border-style:solid;border-width:1px;border-color:navy;'
    + 'position:absolute; z-index:66; background-color:lightblue;width:6cm;'
    + 'height:.83cm;padding-left:10px;padding-top:5px;font-family:Verdana;font-size:9pt;}'
    + '.sortlink{font-size:10;font-family:Verdana;color:blue;}'
    + '</STYLE>'
    //End of styles
    //Javascript  to call sort/filter box
    + '<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">'
    + 'function displaySortFilter(myid){'
    + 'var topObj=document.getElementById(myid).offsetTop;'
    + 'var leftObj=document.getElementById(myid).offsetLeft;'
    + 'var cdObj=document.getElementById("Test").style;'
    + 'cdObj.display="";'
    + 'cdObj.left=leftObj;'
    + 'cdObj.top=topObj+26;'
    + '}</SCRIPT>'   //End of function
    + '<form name="sortfilter">'
    + '<div ID="Test" NAME="Test" class="Test"'
    + 'STYLE="display:none">'
    + '<div id="divradio" STYLE="position:absolute">
    + '<input type=radio name=radio ID=radio value="asc">'
    + '<Span>ASC</Span>'
    + '<input type=radio name=radio ID=radio value="desc">'
    + '<Span>DESC</Span>'
    + '<SELECT NAME="filteroptions" ID="filteroptions" >'
    + '<OPTION VALUE="0" selected>Choose One<BR>'
    + '<OPTION Value="00">First<BR>'
    + '</SELECT>'+ '</div></div></form>'
    The second function creates a link for the user to click:
    //WEcallSortFilter
    Function ()
    '<A Style="text-decoration:underline" ID="sbu" class="sortlink" href="" onClick="'
    + 'displaySortFilter(this.id);return false">SBU</A>'
    The third one adds the style and js functionality to the report:
    //Display sortfilter custom function
    WhilePrintingRecords;
    WEsortfilter
    The last one adds the link to the report for the user
    //Call sortfilter custom function
    WhilePrintingRecords;
    WEcallSortFilter
    When I run this in the report through Infoview, the box pops up, however,
    1)     it doesn't show up right under the link clicked, but in the location where it was placed in Crystal Reports design view. It shows up like a static object instead of at the location clicked.
    2)     When the box displays, it is transparent. The other text on the rpt shows right through the box. I've tried changing the z-index to no avail. And no, making the box a solid color doesn't make it opaque. The other text showing through makes it difficult to click on any of the radio buttons.
    All this is beyond the WE examples, but I''ve to kick it up  a level (or three) to get this project done.
    Thanks

    hey, ran some tests on your scenario. to answer your questions...
    1) all of the functions are designed so that you don't have to make copies of them...all controls should be aok with being on a report more than once, as long as the element names are different...the ones that create on-click functionality (such as the collapsible section) require a different name for each control or you'll run into problems...the last iteration of the control on the report will be the only one that (sort of) works.
    that being said, i created 2 formulae and ran your code without any issues with a duplicate of the function.
    the only things that should cause something like this is
    (a) a control name starting with a number or containing certain non alpha-numeric characters...they follow the same rules as javascript...unfortunately this little tip was not in the user guide even though it was on the list (my fault, sorry) or
    (b) two control names that are the same or
    (c) a duplicate of the same formula on the report.
    2) another little tip that seemed to not make it into the user guide is to follow the same ordering principles on a report that you would with normal layering when designing a crystal report...i.e. right-click on objects in the designer and choose Format, then use the Move object action to bring the objects to the front.
    note that if there is a select menu below these controls you will not be able to have the collapsible section (or any other control) cover that select menu up...this is a known issue in internet explorer and there is no workaround for that one.
    hope that this helps,

  • PDF Document Display Issue - iPad Mini iOS 8.1

    I use my iPad heavily doing in-home sales. I rely on a combination of Box, PDF Expert, and Notability to retrieve and create information/documents.
    After updating my iPad Mini to iOS 8, I started having a display issue when trying to pull up my pricebook in front of a client from Box, where I've always pulled that document from. It showed me one page, and the rest were blank. I opened it in PDF Expert, thinking it was a Box issue - and this time the document was blurry. Being a good stubborn Irishman, I whipped out my iPhone 4 and opened the document fine in Box.
    Afterwards, I download DROPBOX, opened the file in iBooks, deleted applications and re-installed them - all with varying challenges and 0 results. The same document opens up great in my iPhone, just will no longer work correctly on my iPad Mini.
    Anyone else having this issue?

    Hey there Haparari,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    It sounds like your iPad is in recovery mode after running into an issue updating it to the latest version of iOS with iTunes on your computer. Take a look at the article linked below, it provides troubleshooting suggestions that’ll generally resolve that specific alert message that you’re seeing.
    Resolve iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support
    Check your security software
    Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
    Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.
    Ciao,

  • Another iMac Freezing Issue - pls help a newbie out

    I understand this problem is not uncommon - I've been trying to read the many threads I see on the issue. However, most posts outline problems, suggestions are made, but then reported to not work. Also, many threads are 2 years old.
    Could someone please suggest a step-by-step troubleshooting solution?
    Here are my pertinent facts:
    * Bought 20" iMac in July 07.
    * Processor: 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    * Memory: 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    * Hubs installed the second memory stick a while ago (over a year and i don't remember this problem correlating with the new memory).
    * Video: ATI Radeon X1600
    * OS: Mac OS X 10.6.2
    * HD: 250GB capacity, 31GB available
    * I am using an external harddrive to back up my stuff (LaCie, connected by firewire)
    * Frequently used apps: Firefox, iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, Parallels (Quicken for PC), MS Office for Mac, etc.
    The problem starting occurring several months ago, while I was still running Tiger. Have since upgraded to Snow Leopard, with no improvement, in fact, things are getting worse.
    I get display distortion ("artifacts"?) - horizontal lines, blocks of the screen distort, usually clearing after dragging that part of the app off the screen of view and then back.
    Typically, if I start seeing display issues, a freeze up is imminent.
    Sometimes I get a sense it's coming soon - things run more slowly. Other times, it seems without provocation. I click on a window and nothing happens.
    Sometimes it's the wheel of death other times screen completely locks up with no spinning wheel. No option to force quit. Mouse is unresponsive. Keyboard appears to be, although I can toggle the Caps lock button on and off (light toggles). If I am streaming video, the screen will lock up, but the audio continues. If I wait (have gone to bed and come back in the am) it is still frozen.
    If I am streaming video (i.e Hulu on Firefox) or working in memory intensive applications (Windows, Parallels, Photoshop Elements, etc.) Problem is more frequent.
    I can go a day or so without problems, but if I am doing anything slightly involved, it happens much more frequently, as often as every 10 minutes or half hour or so.
    Steps I have taken:
    I always have to do a hard reboot. I have run disk utility multiple times, occasionally it finds and corrects stuff, but no fix seems to be permanent.
    I have seen suggestions of resetting PRAM as well as doing a clean re-install, but also seen that those fixes haven't endured.
    I don't have Apple Care and I'm not sure what steps I should be taking to fix this. Is there hope? I mostly see lots of problems reported, but not successful resolution.
    It's aggravating because I can't use the system for the stuff I bought it for (ex: digital scrapbooking) without worrying about losing my data. I switched to a Mac because I heard they ran so great and were "cool" to boot. While there have been many features of the Mac i enjoy, *if this kind of performance is typical after 2 yrs of use, I will not remain loyal to Apple.*
    If you have been successful in resolving the issue with Apple, what did you tell them and what did they do?
    I am competent system "user", but not as good when it gets into the weeds. Would appreciate any advice, feel free to spell it out as tho I were an idiot.
    I would appreciate a "try this, then try this" approach, especially if you have tried it and it has worked for you.
    Thanks for the help,
    Kendra

    OK, Mean, I mean Meanest, we have the same system (mine was purchased late 2006), and I can say we have identical symptoms. I agree with Paul_31 regarding disk space, but in addition, from all the posts on various Apple forums, it seems clear that the problem is due to the Radeon X1600 graphics card AND heat. These elegantly-designed Macs that we all love have a lot of stuff packed into a small package. Consequently they run hot, and over time the result is components bake and deteriorate. In our case, the weak link seems to be the Radeon card and since it’s not easily replaced, repair costs are nearly as much as the cost of a new iMac. A contributing factor is that over time dust will build up inside your Mac, and this serves as insulation, retarding heat transfer, and causing components to run hotter still.
    OK, so that’s the sad tale, but what can you do? Assuming your system is not too far gone due to the ravages of heat over time, there are things you can do to help prolong it’s life, and hopefully get it to behave itself better until the time it finally fails completely.
    In my case, the steps I’ve taken have resulted in a system that now “generally” runs for days at a time without locking up/crashing. A caveat: these are bandaids, not true fixes. I’m convinced the Radeon card will eventually fail and I’ll be faced with shopping for a new Mac – I’m only hoping the steps taken will give me a few more years of use before that happens. So, here’s my suggestions (basically they all have to do with getting your Mac to run cooler and being able to monitor temps so you know just how hot things are getting):
    1. First of all, if you don’t already have one, get one of the free programs available to monitor your Mac’s internal temperatures. One of the most popular ones is a widget, iStat Pro. As I type this iStat Pro is showing my temps are as follows:
    Hard Drive 92 deg. F
    CPU 85 F
    Ambient Air 69 F
    GPU Diode (graphics card) 92 F
    Hard Drive Bay 95 F
    Memory Controller 90 F
    Optical Drive 81 F
    If you have iStat Pro and see that your temps are about the same as these, I would say don’t bother to read further – you may have a different set of problems. If your temps are 10-20 F (or more) higher, keep reading.
    2. Try to clean out the internals of your Mac with compressed air. After 3+ years of use, I used an air compressor with an air gun attachment and blew through the vents at the back and bottom of my Mac with 60-80psi and actually saw a cloud of dust come out of my Mac. A more effective approach would entail cracking open the case of the Mac so you could really blow directly on the different boards/components. I haven’t done that, but I’m tempted to give it a try. Note: Some have suggested vacuuming and/or using a can of compressed air. I don’t think that approach is all that effective. You need a really strong flow of air to get that dust out of the inards.
    3. Download the free program SMC Fan Control (v 2.2.2). It will allow you to adjust the fan speeds higher for each of the 3 internal fans. The Mac has firmware that ramps up the speeds of these fans as internal temps rise, but the general consensus is the Mac firmware is “too little, too late”. With the standard Mac firmware, the fans will run at their default settings well beyond the point where the components are already way too hot. SMC Fan Control allows you to set the minimum fan speeds higher than the Mac default.
    Once you've done these steps, I'd suggest doing a SMC reset, then re-boot while keeping your fingers crossed.
    This is getting too long so I’ll stop for now. Good luck...

    I am exporting an Indesign Document to PDF. The font in parts of the document are showing up as small boxes, and are not translating to you PDF version correctly when viewed in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
    The document is too large to outline all they text, I am at 36 pages if heavy content (with bullet points that are not outlined correctly). I did not have is issue until I moved over to my new iMAC. I am wondering if there is just a simple setting I am missing.

    Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi Aandi,
    Thanks for your quick response.
    I have a program that is creating the information dictionary for the PDF file and assigns the information. I've checked the value of the Title, Subject, and Author fields just before being written out and they appear correctly in the program, but for some reason when they are assigned they only appear as question marks in the PDF Tab of the Properties window.
    I wonder if this could be because I don't have Helvetica font, and the substituted font doesn't support double-byte characters?
    I just tried to directly assign the values and they do appear correctly.
