Display select in a stored procedure

Hello,
I have a select statement that I wanna print in a stored procedure. The only way is to create a cursor in the SP, which holds the result of the select, and then iterate through the lines and print each line using dbms_output.put_line?
Thanks.

You can pass a ref cursor as an output parameter and print that.
SQL> create or replace procedure p (p_c out sys_refcursor) as
  2  begin
  3    open p_c for
  4      with test_data as
  5      (
  6      select 1 n, 'a' s from dual union all
  7      select 2 n, 'b' s from dual union all
  8      select 5 n, 'x' s from dual
  9      )
10      select n, s from test_data;
11  end;
12  /
Procedure created.
SQL> var c refcursor
SQL> exec p(:c)
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> print c
         N S
         1 a
         2 b
         5 x

  • How to select from a stored procedure?

    Lets say I have a simple stored procedures
    Create Procedure stp_test

    I would like to be able to do this in SSMS (actually, I want to do this from ADODB)
    Select top 10 * from ...stp_test... Order By rowID

  • SELECT statement in stored procedure

    I want to be able to execute a simple SELECT statement from within a stored procedure and return a stream of data which consists of all the rows from the SELECT statement.
    Ultimately, I want to ouput this stream of data to a Crystal Report.
    Apparently, Oracle will not allow you to execute a simple SELECT statement from within a stored procedure. It will only allow execution of a SELECT INTO statment, which requires that you define a cursor, etc. etc.
    Any way around this?
    Thanks

    Look into REF CURSORs. Still not sure about whether APEX uses them though.... Good luck.

  • How to convert simple SQL Select statements into Stored Procedures?

    Hi,
    How can I convert following SELECT statement into a Stored Procedure?
    SELECT a.empno, b.deptno
    FROM emp a, dept b
    WHERE a.deptno=b.deptno;
    Thanking in advance.

    stored procedure is nothing but a named PL/SQL block
    so you can do it like this see below example
    SQL> create or replace procedure emp_details is
      2  cursor c1 is SELECT a.empno, b.deptno
      3  FROM scott.emp a, scott.dept b
      4  WHERE a.deptno=b.deptno;
      5  begin for c2 in c1
      6  LOOP
      7  dbms_output.put_line('name is '||c2.empno);
      8  dbms_output.put_line('deptno is ' ||c2.deptno);
      9  END LOOP;
    10  END;
    11  /
    Procedure created.and to call it use like below
    SQL> begin
      2  emp_details;

  • Display error messages from Stored Procedures through ODBC

    I am working on a C++ application that uses an Oracle ODBC connection. In the exception part of a stored procedure I am using dbms_output.put_line ('error message'). Is there any way to display this message in the C++ application?
    Thanks.

    There are two parts.
    The stored proc must 'throw' an exception.
    And java must catch it.
    You probably already have the java part. That is the catch(SQLException).
    As for the stored proc you can use the following search string in the jdbc forum
    raise oracle
    You need to use 'raise' in the stored proc but I am not sure of the exact form, but one of the threads using the above search string is likely to have it.

  • WCF OData Service stored procedure call generates "Operation could destabilize the runtime" error with $select option

    I've been trying to call a stored procedure through Entity Framework and WCF Data Services (OData). It returns an entity not a complex type. Following walkthroughs found all over the web, I came up with this code inside my service:
    [WebGet]
    public IQueryable<Entity> GetEntitiesByParameterId(int parameterId)
    return CurrentDataSource.GetEntitiesByParameterId(parameterId).AsQueryable();
    Calling the proc this way: ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1 executes
    the stored procedure and returns entities that should be returned. No problem there.
    Everything works well until I try to use $select OData option ie. ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1&$select=name.
    Upon debugging, the method above runs without any error but it returns an Operation could destabilize the runtime error upon reaching the
    client. After so much research, apparently it is a very general error pointing to a lot of different causes. I haven't found one that really matches my particular problem. Closest are
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/378895/operation-could-destabilize-the-runtime
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d2fb4767-dc09-4879-a62a-5b2ce96c4465/for-some-columns-entity-properties-executestorequery-failed-with-error-operation-could?forum=adodotnetdataservices
    but none of the solutions worked on my end.
    Also, from the second article above:
    This is a known limitation of WCF DS. ...
    Second is that some of the queries won't work correctly because LINQ to EF needs little different LINQ expressions than LINQ to Objects in some cases. Which is the problem you're seeing.
    It has been posted on 2012. If it its true, are there still no updates on this? And is there any other workaround to get the $select working on the stored proc call?
    What works:
    ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1
    ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1&$top=1
    ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1&$skip-5
    ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1&$filter={filter query}
    ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1&$expand=SomeNavigationProperty
    What doesn't work:
    ~WcfService.svc/GetEntitiesByParameterId?parameterId=1&$select=name
    Tech details:
    EntityFramework 5, WCF Data Service 5.0, OData V3
    *I've also tried upgrading to EF6 and WCF 5.6.2 and it still didn't work.
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Someone from SO replied to my question there and said that $select is still not supported though I couldn't find any definitive documentation about it.
    From what I gather and observed, $select breaks the stored procedure call because it tries to alter the data shape already gotten from the database and attempts to return a dynamic entity instead. Something about the stored proc returning an ObjectResult might
    be messing it up. As I have said, these are merely my observations.
    Workaround: I found a simple and elegant workaround for it though. Since my stored procedures are only getting data from the database and does
    not alter data in any way (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE), I tried using table-valued functions that returns a table equivalent to the entity on my EF. I've found that calling this function on the Service Operation method returns an IQueryable<Entity> which
    is basically what is needed. $select also works now and so does other OData query options.
    Steps:
    Create a function on the database
    Update EDMX -> Add function
    Add new Function Import with Entity return type
    Create service operation in WCF Data Service that calls CurrentDataSource.<FunctionName>()
    Test in fiddler.
    CODES
    Database Function:
    CREATE FUNCTION GetEntities(@parameter)
    RETURN @entites TABLE(
    [Id] [int],
    [Name] [nvarchar](100),
    AS
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO @entities
    SELECT [Id], [Name], ... FROM [EntityTable]
    RETURN
    END
    WCF:
    [WebGet]
    public IQueryable<Entity> GetEntity(int parameter)
    return CurrentDataSource.GetEntity(parameter);
    It doesn't really solve the stored procedure problem but I'm marking this as answer until someone can provide a better one as it does solve what I'm trying to do.
    Hope this helps others too. :)

  • How do I get return parameters from a stored procedure call?

    The Open SQL Statement has an option on the Advanced tab to specify a command type of 'stored procedure'. In addition to returning a recordset, a stored procedure can also return parameters (see http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q185/1/25.ASP for info on doing this with ADO). Is it possible to get those return parameters with TestStand? In particular, I want to be able to get error codes back from the stored procedure in case it fails (maybe there is another way).

    The Open SQL Statement step type does not fully support stored procedures. If the procedure returns a record set than you can fetch the values as you would a SELECT statement. Stored procedures require you to setup the parameters before the call and this is not yet supported. Bob, in his answer, made a reference to the Statements tab and I think that he was talking about the Database Logging feature in TS 2.0.
    If the stored procedure is returning a return value, it may return as a single column, single row recordset which can be fetched as you normally do a record set.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 - Report Builder 3.0 - timeout using shared data source and stored procedure

    I select the shared datasource from the data source propeties dialog, test the connection and everything is good.
    I add a dataset by selecting "use a dataset embedded in my report" option within the Dataset properties dialog.
    I select the newly added data source, click the "Stored procedure" query type and drop down the list box and select my intended stored procedure.
    the timeout for the dataset is "0" seconds.
    I click the "OK" button and I'm presented with the parameters to the stored procedure.
    I enter valid data for the parameters and click the "OK" button.
    I then get the following error message after 30 seconds:
    The problem is, all of the timeouts, that I'm aware of, have values of zero (no timeout) or high enough values that 30 seconds isn't even close to the timeout.
    I think the smallest timeout we have is 120 seconds.
    I have searched this site and many others and the solutions all involve altering the stored procedure to get the fields into report builder and then revert the stored procedure back to its original form.
    To me, this is NOT a solution.
    I have too many stored procedures that need to be brought into Report Builder.
    I need a real solution.
    Thank you for you time, Tim Caldwell.
    Timothy E Caldwell

    I don't mean to be rude, but really, check to see if the stored procedure can return data rows???
    Maybe I'm not being clear enough.
    The stored procedure runs perfectly fine.
    it runs perfectly fine in the production environment and the test environment.
    I can access the stored procedure in several ways and have it return correct data.
    I can even trick report builder into creating a dataset with parameters and run the stored procedure that way.
    What I cannot do, is to get report builder to not timeout after 30 seconds on the initial creation of a dataset with a Query type of stored procedure.
    I have seen this issues posted again and again and again on may different sites and the "solution" is to simplifiy the stored procedure by creating a stored procedure that has a create table and a select in the stored procedure and that's it.  After
    report builder creates the dataset the developer then has to replace the simplified stored procedure with the actual stored procedure and everything works fine after that.
    HOWEVER, having to go through this process for 70 or more stored procedures is ridiculous.
    It would appear that there is something within report builder itself that is causing this issue.
    The SQL Script included is an example of a stored procedure that will not create fields create a dataset with fields and parameters in Report Builder 3.0:
    USE [CRUM_IT]
    GO
    /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[COGNOS_Level5ScriptSP] Script Date: 11/17/2014 08:02:26 ******/

  • Stored procedures not working after migrating from 8i to 10g

    The Oracle stored procedures are generating an error following upgrading a ColdFusion web application from Oracle8i to 10g release 2.

    I've been looking at this for about 3 days with a colleague in the office. We can resolve this be recreating the stored procedure with a new name (e.g. adding the suffix "_v2"). Its not really practical for us to do this throughout the system. Anyone know what the root cause might be?
    I'm currently connecting to Oracle10g using SQLTools and Oracle8 client. I've yet to upgrade to Oracle10 client.
    I've tried selecting all the stored procedures and re-compiling them but it appeared to make no difference.

  • Missing Stored Procedure for SQL Server

    Hello,
    I'm trying to create the standard TestStand 4 schema for SQL Server. I get the following error when I run multiple numeric test cases:
    An error occurred calling 'LogResults' in 'ITSDBLog' of 'zNI TestStand Database Logging'
    An error occurred executing a statement.
    Schema: SQL Server Stored Proc (NI).
    Statement: MEAS_NUMERICLIMIT.
    Could not find stored procedure 'InsertStepMeasNumericLimit'.
    Description: Could not find stored procedure 'InsertStepMeasNumericLimit'.
    Number: -2147217900
    NativeError: 2812
    SQLState: 42000
    Reported by: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
    Source: TSDBLog
    -2147217900; User-defined error code.
    Step 'Log Results to Database' of sequence 'Log To Database' in 'Database.seq'
    My process for creating the database is to create a .sql file from the TestStand database configuration window. I have selected SQL Server Stored Procedure. I then build the database by running the script in the Execute SQL window of the Database viewer. I don't get any errors when creating the database or the stored procedures. I have noticed that a stored procedure, called InsertMeasNumericLimit does exist. When I rename this procedure to InsertStepMeasNumericLimit, the sequence with the multiple numeric executes without error, and my data is in the database.
    Now to my questions>
    1. Am I doing something wrong in my procedure to create the database schema, that would cause this?
    2. Have the NI schemas or DB calls in TS been changed since 3.5 and validated?
    3. Has anyone else run across this problem, and what others can I expect to encounter with the SQL server stored procedure schema?
    Thanks in advance for the help,
    BCE

    bce,
    1. What you are doing is correct. There is a bug with the SQL Server Stored Procedure. Apparently
    2. The schemas hasn't changed since 3.5? Were you able to go through the same process in TS 3.5 without running into this error?
    3. It looks like you have found the way to solve this problem. There are a few other step types that have similar error. Specifically the IVI steps. Before the bug is fixed, you can use validate to determines whether the statement and column information for the selected schema matches the tables and columns in the database. Alternatively, you may look at the file below to find out the correct spelling of the stored procedures.
    <TestStand 4.0>\Components\NI\Models\TestStandModels\Database\SQL Server Create Stored Proc Result Tables.sql

  • Get server output from pl/sql stored procedure

    Hi Colleagues,
    I would like to get and watch the server output of my PL/SQL stored procedure
    when I run my java program and call it from. The Stored proc. uses "dbms_output.put_line".
    If it is clearly and possible (or not), will you send me your answer!
    Thanks a lot
    Ulve

    Hi,
    You can redirect the standard output to the console (i.e., the SQL output) using the
    DBMS_JAVA.SET_OUTPUT() method.
    SQL> SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
    SQL> call dbms_java.set_output (5000);But, the output is only printed when the stored procedure exits, and this setting works only for one call (i.e., the SQL call that immediately follows the invocation of DBMS_JAVA.SET_OUTPUT()). The minumum and default value is 2,000 characters and the maximum is 1,000,000 (1 million) characters. Notice the “SET SERVEROUTPUT ON” which enables displaying the outputs of stored procedures (Java or PL/SQL blocks) in SQL*Plus.

  • Grant execute to all custom stored procedures, not quite working

    I would like to grant execute permissions on all custom stored procedures to a group and have tried using this:
    USE myDB
    select 'GRANT EXECUTE ON ['+name+'] TO [mydomain\mydb] '  from sys.objects  where type ='P' and is_ms_shipped = 0
    It seems to execute without error, I see the full list of stored procedures I've created listed like this:
    GRANT EXECUTE ON [procUserInsert] TO [mydomain\mydb]
    However the stored procedure I added earlier, which didn't have any explicit rights set for it, does not show that the execute permission has been granted. Other stored procedures, where I had already granted execute to the group, remain as they were (which
    is expected). I'm viewing permissions via ssms, selecting the new stored procedure, then properties, permissions. If the grant failed there ought to be an error message...I don't get it. This is sql server 2005.

    It seems like you were only printing the statement (SELECT), but it is unclear if you executed them.
    You could try granting EXECUTE permission at either the DB scope or SCHEMA scope. That would grant EXECUTE on all modules (i.e. SPs, UDFs, etc.) at the chosen scope, including modules created in the future. For example:
    -- Grant EXECUTE permission on all DB
    GRANT EXECUTE TO [myDomain\mydbGroup1]
    go
    -- Grant EXECUTE permission on schema mySchema
    GRANT EXECUTE ON SCHEMA::[mySchema] TO [myDomain\mydbGroup2]
    go
    I hope this helps.
    BTW. The way you were creating the dynamic SQL for granting permissions to SPs individually is subject to 2nd order injection attacks. You should use quotename(name) in order to escape object names.

  • TableAdapters and stored procedures

    Anyone know if there is any support for Oracle using stored procedures with a TableAdapter?
    For those unfamiliar with this feature in VS 2005, we create a strongly typed DataSet, put a table on it using the designer, add/configure a TableAdapter and enter the TableAdapter Configuration Wizard. From here, we choose a connection string, then the next wizard step asks "How should the TableAdapter access the database?" Using an Oracle connection string, the only option that is not disabled is "Use SQL statements".
    At this step, for an SQL Server connection string, we can select "Use existing stored procedures", which is what we want to use now with Oracle 9i R2. We've been using SQL DML statements quite happily with TableAdapters so far, and had not really noticed that this feature would not be available for Oracle. Unfortunately, we now need to use stored procedures, and we quite like the TableAdapters --- once you get over the rather obvious coupling of data access to the DataSet, not having to write so much code to use DataAdapters is quite nice.
    I've read a little about the ODT, and the Oracle Explorer stuff looks pretty cool, but if I go to the trouble of installing the ODT, will it fix my TableAdapter stored procedures problem? Are there any other tools or workarounds?

    Well, I tried it and you're correct; the designer doesn't like package procedures.
    And the designer doesn't like ref cursors, either. I was able to use them, however, by writing my own method. I added the method to my dataset (patial class) and it works great. I probably could have (and should have) put the method in the table adapter class (again, in separate partial class file so that it doesn't get discarded by the designer) but I didn't know that I could do that at the time. Now that I know, I may move it.
    Somewhat related, I found that I could handle events of the OracleDataAdapter in a partial TableAdapter class. Why is this interesting? Because after TableAdapter updates, I think that I can select the updated rows back in to the DataTable. This will be handy (if possible) if the data that I update is modified by a trigger or something. Let me know if you've tried this. By the way, SQL Server makes this easy! Follow your update SQL with a select statement; it all happens in the same command!
    Namespace DGPPDbDataSetTableAdapters
         Partial Public Class MilestoneDatesTableAdapter
              Private Sub adapterRowUpdated(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Data.OracleClient.OracleRowUpdatedEventArgs) Handles _adapter.RowUpdated
                   'TODO: Re-Select the updated rows back in to the DataTable
              End Sub
         End Class
    End Namespace
