Displaying the number of files in a folder with Mountain Lion?
I recently purchased a new iMac with Mountain Lion and I pretty much hate it. I have been a fan of just about EVERY update, so I am not resistant to change. I just think this is an inferior product. It is slow, clunky, and the update alerts remind me of everything that I hated about PCs. Meh.
Anyway, one of the main problems I have with it is that in previous versions, when I opened a folder, there was a little bit of information at the bottom of the folder that told me how many files were in that folder. As a photographer, I use this information ALL THE TIME. I realize I can click on the folder and "get info" to see how many files are in it...but this is extremely inefficient (especially considering how slow the brand new system is -- in spite of the 3.4 Hz processor and 16GB of RAM).
I can't seem to find anything in the preferences that allows me to change this. If there is a way, I would greatly appreciate it if someone would tell me how! Thank you!

Protected folder with mountain lion
Can I do a password folder with mountain lion If so how?

As indicated in the linked article, read/write is good.
However, if you using Time Machine, and you are going to be making lots of changes and the folder is going to hold a large amount of data (like tens of GB), then choose SparseBundle so that Time Machine can work with it efficiently. -

Where to find the number of files in a folder (in Finder)?
I just upgraded from Snow Leopard.
In the past I could look at the bottom of the finder window and see how many files where in a particular folder. And how much megawattage they respresented in total.
Is there some kind of preference I can set in Mountain Lion to be able to see the 'number' of files in a given folder?
All ears,
BenThank you Kurt,
You're an ace.
Much appreciated.

Programatically count the number of files in a folder
Hi Folks
I need to programatically count the number of files in a given folder and return the value to a Program Unit to be included in further processing.
Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have looked at UTL_FILE but this does not offer what I want.
Does anyone know of an obscure package in Oracle that I could use?
I'm using 9i in a W2K environment.
Many thanks
Simon GaddHi,
following a java based solution i found somewhere on Tom Kyte's AskTom forum.
GRANT JAVAUSERPRIV to TESTUSER;
dbms_java.grant_permission( 'TESTUSER', 'SYS:java.io.FilePermission', 'c:\', 'read' );
create global temporary table DIR_LIST
( filename varchar2(255) )
on commit delete rows
create or replace and compile java source named "DirList"
as
import java.io.*;
import java.sql.*;
public class DirList
public static void getList(String directory)
throws SQLException
File path = new File( directory );
String[] list = path.list();
String element;
for(int i = 0; i < list.length; i++)
element = list;
#sql { INSERT INTO DIR_LIST (FILENAME)
VALUES (:element) };
create or replace procedure get_dir_list( p_directory in varchar2 )
as language java
name 'DirList.getList( java.lang.String )';
exec get_dir_list( 'c:\temp' );
select count(*) from dir_list; -

Newbie: How to manage the number of files in a folder
I have a backup application that runs each day and creates a file in a folder.
I have an iCal scipt which automates this backup to run at a specific time but I would like to modify it so that it deletes the oldest file in the folder. I cannot figure out the best way to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions?This rather long script finds the oldest file in the complete nested range of a chosen outer folder and deletes it.
property filePathList : {}
property fileDateList : {}
getEveryFileName((choose folder) as alias)
Sort_items(fileDateList, filePathList)
set oldest to item 1 of filePathList
tell application "Finder" to delete oldest
to getEveryFileName(theFolder)
tell application "Finder"
my getNamesDates(get files of theFolder)
set FolderList to folders of theFolder
repeat with everyFolder in FolderList
my getEveryFileName(everyFolder)
end repeat
end tell
end getEveryFileName
to getNamesDates(FileList)
repeat with everyFile in FileList
try
tell application "Finder"
set end of fileDateList to modification date of everyFile
set end of filePathList to everyFile as alias
end tell
on error anError
display dialog anError
end try
end repeat
end getNamesDates
to Sort_items(sortList, SecondList)
-- sorts by the first list (dates), while keeping the second list in the same order.
tell (count sortList) to repeat with i from (it - 1) to 1 by -1
set s to sortList's item i
set r to SecondList's item i
repeat with i from (i + 1) to it
tell sortList's item i to if s > it then
set sortList's item (i - 1) to it
set SecondList's item (i - 1) to SecondList's item i
else
set sortList's item (i - 1) to s
set SecondList's item (i - 1) to r
exit repeat
end if
end repeat
if it is i and s > sortList's end then
set sortList's item it to s
set SecondList's item it to r
end if
end repeat
end Sort_items

Apple File Sharing very slow with Mountain Lion
I've noticed since upgrading to 10.8 the transfer speeds over a LAN via AFP (File Sharing) are VERY slow.. in some instances. Based on the behaviour i'm guessing it has something to do with the amount of items.
for instance:
A folder that contains approx 122mb worth of 1500 small files takes me about 50 seconds to transfer while a long audio recording with a greater filesize of 125mb takes only 11 seconds.
using SCP from the command line the same 122mb folder took only 19 seconds while the audio took 10 seconds.
after performing the same operations on a computer running 10.6 I can deduce that the problem is on the receiving end. Audio file transfer times were the same, however the same folder of items took only 27 seconds when it was transferred to a computer running 10.6 regardless of which OS the computer sending the file was running.
apparently handling a greater number of files increases transfer time for both methods but AFP is painfully slow with 10.8 on the receiving end.
any thoughts or suggestions?
I've read a couple threads about people having trouble with Time Machine running slowly.. i wonder if this is related.Same problem here. I just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I only got 19 GB of space, but Time Machine wants 10 hours, whereas in OSX Lion a full backup would take just under an hour, and incremental updates were lightning fast.
I even sat it up to do it overnight, but on 8 hours it was only half way through only 10 GB. I can't live with that in the future.
Im trying to backup on a SD card which seems to work very good in Lion. Im on a 2012 Macbook Air using a SSD.
My bite of the apple has been somewhat sour. I tried reformatting the SD card, well knowing that I would lose old backups. But still the backup is extremely slow. Now I can't install Lion or Mountain Lion from scratch without having to wait 10 hours for TM backup or installing tons of applications and settings again. Bummer. I'm never going to early adobt a OSX upgrade again. -

Hi Lancebe
Is your macbook mid2011 or newer if it is air or early 2011 or newer if it is pro. If not it does not support mirror and you would need a third party app such as www.airparrot.com . If it is a compatable mac then post again and give a little detail of your set up and what the problems are.

Does the 13" MacBook Pro **NO** Retina, come with Mountain Lion??
Ordered mine from Best Buy last week, according to their website, as well as Apple's website it should have Mountain Lion OS on it. It only has Lion 10.7.5 on it.
Is that how it should be?If your Macbook Pro comes with Lion then it's not the latest revision. The last Macbook Pro to ship with Lion has the Model identifier 9.2 released in June 2012. The lasted revision has the Model identifier 10.2 released in Oct 2012 and ships with Mountain Lion

Hi,
Thanks, but these suggestions aren't helping.
I have
1. tried to print form a different add
2. deleted and reinstaled the printer
3. deleted and reinstall the printer drivers
4. reset the printing system
there's no problem with the printer or the wireless as (1) i can print using my partner's mac with mountian lion and (2) I can see the printer on my own mac (mavericks)
Any more suggestions?
Thanks

Windows files with Mountain Lion
Do I still need MacFuse and/or NTFS-3G to read/write Windows files from my MBA with Mountain Lion?
install osxfuse (current 2.5.0)
(not macfuse which is no longer maintained)
https://github.com/osxfuse/osxfuse/downloads
install ntfs-3g (most recent binary 2010.10.2)

free version old-ish but ok-ish (gives an ignorable but annoying warning

Add Folder - is there a limit to the number of files you can add in one go?
I have a fairly large collection (60GB+) of 192kbps mp3 files which are stored under My Music in a folder structure of Artists / Album, e.g. "My Music \ ACDC \ Back in Black\ Hells Bells.mp3"
I recently bought an ipod and having installed itunes I wanted to add all my music. I figured out that the way to do this is to go File / Add Folder and select the "My Music" folder.
However, itunes starts adding the mp3s and stops at the Bruce Springsteen folder. At this point the itunes library can see all the "A" folders and the "Bs" up to and including Bruce Springsteen. If I try the process again nothing happens.
However, if I then try to add a specific folder e.g. "My Music \ Charlatans" it works.
This suggests to me that the Add Folder option has a limit to the number of files it can process.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated as I'm not looking forward to manually adding a hundred or so folders.
Windows XPWell the part about putting songs in the "iTUnes Music" folder I only brought up because it seemed you liked things very organized. You could use iTunes to so all the organizeing. Plus once you add something to the iTUnes library, if you change ANYTHING about it in windows explorer, like its name, change the name of the folder its in or move it to another folder, iTUnes "Looses Track" of it. Its not like other programs that "Watch" files and folders for changes outside its "iTUnes Music" folder
But to have iTUnes auto search, you have to delete a hidden pref file. After doing this, when you open iTUnes again it will throw up a setup wizard, just like its the first time ever installing it. Its in this wizard where you get your ONLY chance to have iTUnes auto search and add files from the system. Just goto the link below and follow Scott P's steps
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=607357
Also since your new to the ipod, you my want to check out the "iPod 101" section so you can learn the ropes of everything

Hi all,
Can any one tell how to get the number of files(.EPS) count inside a folder when the folder path is specified in VC++ 6.0?
Thanks in Advance.
Regards
myriazI'm a little confused by the question, but it sounds like you're asking how to count the number of files with a particular extension in a given directory? That's not really an AI SDK question, but it's a fairly easy one to find if you google it. If you're trying to use Illustrator to do it, AI doesn't have a general purpose file API. It has a few functions to do some things that Illustrator needs, but I don't think enumerating directories is one of them.
