Distribution point - question
Hi
1. Is there a way I can control the bandwith between 2 sites regarding the distirbution point syncronization
Requirement:
Pirmary Site --> Send packages to standard distribution point (server DP) "Link is 3 mb bandwith" and I want to limit 50kb the transfer.
Workstation afftectd in the remote location 100
2. What is you recommend for type of DP to be used (standard DP or secondary site with DP)
Please advise
Robert
Hi
You can go to Site Database --> Site Setting(of the primary Site) --> Go to addresses properties of the address you created there is a tab of rate limit you can punch in the rate at what you want the data transfer to be.
This can only be done for site to site communication.
In your case Primary site to secondary site.
Better you replicate package in out of office hours, rather then throtling the bandwidth to certain limit.
3MB bandwidth is not a too good bandwidth for 100 clients where package size is large. Monthly patching package will be minimum of 200 MB size for Security updates itself. I suggest you should go for secondary site with DP role created which will also help
in data transfer(rrporting data) collectively to primary site via Proxy management point role. Also for patching install WSUS console your secondary site Install SUP role then you need to configure it as Active SUP and configure it to sync from upstream
server that will be your Primary site to get the patch information.
Kindly mark this as Answere or helpfull as suitable to you so other can take advantage of similar situation
Based on the question, there are no secondary sites thus most of your answer does not apply to whats been asked and is thus not helpful.

Question about locking down IIS on an SCCM 2012 distribution point on a Windows Server 2003
Hello. My environment is SCCM 2012 SP1. I will be setting up several distribution points on Windows Server 2003 machines. This summer I have a project to configure SCCM to use our PKI infrastructure. Unfortunately, this will not be in place before I need
to set the Windows Server 2003 machines up as distribution points. I am not an IIS expert. When I set the DPs up, I am only 1)Installing IIS, 2)Enabling BITS extensions, and 3)Enabling WebDav. Is there anything I should do to ensure they are as secured as
possible?I would say that installing Windows Server 2003 is not "as secure as possible" due to it's end of support coming soon.
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/default.aspx?LN=en-us&p1=3198&x=10&y=12
And I would say that we need more information about your scenario to tell you how it is as secure "as possible". Since that would be shutoff at the bottom of the ocean. But that wouldn't be that useful server.
Im guessing that you will run these servers for internal
clients ONLY. And that you have a decent edge protection as well as physical protection. Then I would start by having the lastest secrutiy patches, running antivirus software and having the firewall turned ON. I would make sure that
only necessary logons would be possible and that the servers wouldn't cache any credentials. Typically a DP NEVER holds sensitive data so no real need to secure them more than that in a normal scenario if you ask me.
A final notice, this is a baseline
for a common scenario. You would need to scale and change that
in order to apply for your scenario.

Using an ASA 5505 as a Certificate Authority and Distribution Point?
I had a question about the limitations of an ASA 5505 and using it as CA. The setup would be as follows:
2 ASA 5520's in set up for high availability failover.
1 ASA set up with a local CA server.
If I had to set up VPN to connect to an interface on the ASA 5520's and wanted to require certificates as a secondary authentication could they use an ASA 5505 as a CA to retrieve and verify stored certificates? The issue I ran in to was not being able to set up a local CA server on the failover pair and was hoping to use an ASA 5505 with a local CA server to act as a distribution point. I have been researching various configurations similar to this but have not found definitive information if it is even possible.
If someone could verify if this is even possible and / or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
RickYou can only create self signed certificates using the ASA, or import a identity certificate from a 3rd party CA. The ASA unfortunately can only issue user certificates to users or PCs via downloading from a website, they cannot complete CSR requests.

SCCM 2012 R2 with Server 2003 DIstribution Point
Does anyone know if Server 2003 SP2 can be used as a distribution point? I have a fellow co-worker having issues with getting PxE to work.

That is supported for PXE but does not support multicast or PXE booting of EFI.

SCCM 2012: Reinstall remote distribution point?
Hi,
We have a remote distribution point to which we can't deploy packages anymore. Several attempts to repair it failed.
I'd like to remove the distribution point and reinstall it via SCCM 2012 console.
However, I'd like to know the impact since it contains GB of packages already.
Note: the DP has been removed for clients (temorarely) so no impatc there.
My questions:
-what is best practises: can I just remove and add it in 1 go (or need to wait before re-adding, reboot needed in between)?
-will all data be pulled in again (I activated pull and would reactivate it after reinstall)?
-what's your experience in this procedure? does it work in general or is it preferrable I continue troubleshooting the current situation?
Please advise.

SCCM 2012 - Change Distribution Point's Site System Properties Site Code
Hello All,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. Here's what I have and here's what I'm trying to do.
SCCM 2012 R1
Each of our offices has a Windows 7 SP1 Ent PC that is a distribution point for that office's 10-20 machines. A number of these offices and their DPs were setup prior to me setting up a number of Secondary Site Servers. So right now, these DPs' site codes
are the primary site server's. I'd like to change these to one of the Secondary Site Servers.
When I go to the Site System properties of one of these Win7 distribution points, the Site Code is grayed out.
So, the question is, how can I change one of these DPs' site codes?
Thanks in advance to whomever helps!!
BillThat's a strange reason for using Secondary Sites. How many clients are you managing? Have you good WAN links?

Ports Required for SCCM 2012 Distribution point
I think below are the port need to open for distribution point instalaltion
Site Server -- > Distribution Point
SMB 445 TCP
RPC Endpoint Mapper 135 UDP and TCP
RPC dynamic TCP
my question here is for install Distribution point instalaltion , only
Site Server -- > Distribution Point one way port open is enough? or do we need to open both ways? One way is enough for a standard Distribution Point. All distribution is initiated by your Primary site server by the Package Transfer Manager.

Server 2012 Distribution Point - Is BITS Required ?
Hi All,
I have deployed a Distribution Point on Server 2012, i went through the documentation and there was no mention of BITS being a prerequsite...
So my Question is - Do we still need to install BITS as a prereq for the Distribution Point Role on a Server 2012 box.
CheersThere still seems to be some contradictions on whether you are supposed to install BITS or not when setting up a Distribution Point.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712264.aspx under the section
"To install Internet Information Services (IIS) on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 computers"
clearly shows for Windows Server 2008 R2, select the
Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) check box.
If you look at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_SiteSystemRolePrereqs under the Distribution Point prerequisites, there
is no mention of installing BITS unless we are to assume the statement "You can use the default IIS configuration" means to select BITS as described above?
Plus the following note under Additional prerequisites is as clear as mud.
Note
With System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, the distribution point site system role does not require Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). When BITS is configured on the distribution point computer, BITS on the distribution point
computer is not used to facilitate the download of content by clients that use BITS.
Most of us understand the client facilitates the BITS downloads but is there still a need for the
BITS Server Extensions and the only way to get those on a Server 2008 R2 box is to select the
Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) check box? -
Hello,
I have 1 primary and 100 secondary site (each secondary having MP and DP role installed). I want to migrate CM2012 share distribution point for 100 secondary site. I have few question in that.
1.Currently all the secondary contain : more than 250 packages in SMSPKG$ folder and DATAACCESS shared folder. If I convert to shared DP and attach cm2012..How distribution point works. Should I need to distribute 250 package to the shared one or it will
copy the package from SMSPKG$ folder and store in content lib, or should I redistribute the package to shared DP's?
2.Once I convert the share DP it losses 2007 primary communication?
3.what about the DATAACCESS folder once migrate share DP.. still use old one?Hi,
1. The conversion process will convert all Migrated packages to the new contentlibrary no need to redistribute them.
2. Yes
3. From TechNet :
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712275.aspx
"The upgrade process creates a copy of the migrated content that is stored on the distribution point, and then converts this copy to the single instance content store. When Configuration Manager converts a package to the single instance content store, it
deletes that package from the SMSPKG share on the distribution point computer unless the package has one or more advertisements that are configured to
Run program from distribution point. "

Distribution Point Multicast and Unicast at same time
Hi,
Scenario: SCCM 2012 R2. All in one server.
The server is distribution point (PXE and Multicast enabled).
The questions are:
If any Multicast dependency fails (i.e firewall blocks ports for multicast traffic),
Does the OS image will be deployed using unicast?
Is mandatory the multicast deployment method?
Thanks!Hi,
No, when the multicast fail the TS would failed.
If you select the checkbox “Transfer this package only via multicast” in Configuration Manager Client Package Properties, which is mandatory.

Hello,
One server Distribution Point died this morning.
1. Is it possible to disable temporarily (thinking the new server will use the same name and IP ) the distribution Point for this site? Or should I delete it?
2. What are the requirements for a Distribution Point Server? Documentation?
SCCM 2007 R3 - 2,000 Clients
Thanks,

System Status- Site Status- Distribution Points Missing
Quick question,
I seem to be missing some DP's from Site Status, if a DP is installed and running, I'm presuming that it should appear in the Monitoring\system Status\Site Status workspace....only I have some DP's that don't appear, what would cause this?
many thanksThey should show-up there eventually. Did you check the Distribution Point Configuration Status
node to see if the distribution points are up-and-running already?

Preferred Distribution Point and Fallback
If I have a protected (preferred) distribution point that doesn't have content distributed to it yet and I have fallback enabled will the client then move to another distribution point that has the content even though that one is protected by other boundaries
which the client is not in?
So question is can a client fallback to another protected distribution point which is referenced by boundary groups that don't include any boundaries the client is in?Basically yes. It's well explained here

SCCM 2012 Distribution Points on Domain Controllers
I want to install Distribution points on all of my remote servers. They are all domain controllers though. I know one of the prerequisites to host the DP role is to have the SCCM computer object apart of that servers local administrators group. Since they
are domain controllers they dont have a local security policy and it is controlled by AD. I'm sure you can add the SCCM computer object to the domain admins group to solve this but my question is if this is considered a supported configuration? If you are using the DC as a Distribution point to install clients via Client Push, the "NT Authority\Authenticated Users" group must be added to the local group "Users" to the DC/DP.
Clients are still able to get installed manually, but Client Push fails.
Failed to correctly receive a WEBDAV HTTP request.. (StatusCode at WinHttpQueryHeaders: 401)
Run elevated command prompt (net localgroup users "Authenticated Users" /add)
Test Client Push - Should be successful.
Reason: By default the local groups NT Authority\Interactive Users and
NT Authority\Authenticated Users are removed from the Domain Controller. Clients that are using the DP for content cannot authenticate using the computer account.
