DnD from JTree to JTable

Hi guys,
It seems JTree DnD support is a quit difficult feature to implement of all swing components.
I'm writing an application in which I have a JTree structure representing the file system of user machine and another JTable component at the right.
I want to be able to drag files nodes from left JTree to right JTable.
I would appreciate a lot if someone share with me some source code examples for this functionality.
can someone post some basic java code to get me started or point me to some web resource discussing this feature?
thanks much.

http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=296255Thank you. I already looked at this thread but it's not what i'm looking for: it shows dnd from a JTree to another JTree..however i need to implement dnd from JTree to JTable.
Is there some basic example on how to do that ?
thanks.

  • Select row and column from header in jtable

    hello i have a problem to select row and column from header in jtable..
    can somebody give me an idea on how to write the program on it.

    Hi Vicky Liu,
    Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry for not clear question.
    Answer for your question:
    1. First value of Open is item fiels in Dataset2 and this value only for first month (january). But for other month Open value get from Close in previous month.
    * I have 2 Dataset , Dataset1 is all data for show in my report. Dataset2 is only first Open for first month
    2. the picture for detail of my report
    Detail for Red number:
    1. tb_Open -> tb_Close in previous month but first month from item field in Dataset2
    espression =FormatNumber(Code.GetOpening(Fields!month.Value,First(Fields!open.Value, "Dataset2")))
    2. tb_TOTAL1 group on item_part = 1
    expression =FormatNumber(Sum(CDbl(Fields!budget.Value)))
    3. tb_TOTAL2 group on item_part = 3 or item_part = 4
    expression =FormatNumber(Sum(CDbl(Fields!budget.Value)) + ReportItems!tb_TOTAL1.Value )
    4. tb_TOTAL3 group on item_part = 2
    expression =FormatNumber(Sum(CDbl(Fields!budget.Value)) - ReportItems!tb_TOTAL2 .Value)
    5. tb_Close -> calculate from tb_TOTAL3 - tb_Open
    expression =FormatNumber(Code.GetClosing(ReportItems!tb_TOTAL3.Value,ReportItems!tb_Open.Value))
    I want to calculate the value of tb_Open and tb_Close. I try to use custom code for calculate them. tb_close is correct but tb_Open is not correct that show value = 0 .
    My custom code:
    Dim Shared prev_close As Double
    Dim Shared now_close As Double
    Dim Shared now_open As Double
    Public Function GetClosing(TOTAL3 as Double,NowOpening as Double)
        now_close = TOTAL3 + NowOpening
        prev_close = now_close
        Return now_close
    End Function
    Public Function GetOpening(Month as String,NowOpen as Double)
        If Month = "1" Then
            now_open = NowOpen
        Else
            now_open = prev_close
        End If
        Return now_open
    End Function
    Thanks alot for your help!

  • Add JTree in JTable

    How to add JTree in JTable?
    Please tell me?

    you need to use a TableCellRenderer, that implements your JTree, for cell renderers see http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/table.html and http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/table.html#renderer

  • Different look of button in jtree or jtable (windows/linux)

    Hi.
    I have jbutton on jtree(in jtable is the same problem) it looks like this on linux: http://mikel.pl/button.jpg .
    On windows eveyrthink is ok. I tried to set RaisedBevelBorder but in this case on windows button looks awful. Is any trick to get the same look of button without checking what system is running?

    Yes and no. Linux and Windows use different LookAndFeels by default, meaning the buttons are painted differently. Just setting the same border will not do in this case. The only way of having the application look exactly the same on both platforms is to manually set a LookAndFeel available on both systems. This should be the case for the MetalLookAndFeel, the SynthLookAndFeel and, I believe, for the Linux LookAndFeels as well.

  • DnD from JList into JTree

    Can anyone point me at a tutorial demonstarting how to drag objects from a JList into a JTree?
    many thanks

    Let me add some more information to maybe get some suggestions:
    I have DnD implemented in my tree - as my nodes are DefaultMutableTreeNode it is easy to getUserObject() and carry out the necessary changes to model and underlying object.
    In my JList(x2) I have custom objects, DnD is implemented on each list. My question is how should I wrap my JList objects so that I can retrieve the user object when I drop it into my tree?
    I have found an example of dragging nodes from one tree to another tree, but this is of little help as the DnD is simply dragging the String object about.
    Any pointers/suggestions please

  • Refreshing JTable from JTree?

    Hello everyone,
    I've created a JTable using my own table model extending AbstractTableModel...
    I'm sending data to JTable as Vector through it's constructor...
    I have also created a JTree in another class... What i intend to achieve is this:
    Whenever i click on a node of the JTree, all the childs
    of that node should be displayed in the jtable...
    I have solved part of the problem by creating a new instance of JTable whenever the tree node is clicked... obtaining the names of all the childs in a Vector and sending it to the JTable...
    The problem with this approach is that a table row is only refreshed when it's clicked upon... or if i minimize and then maximize the app...
    Please tell me how to solve this problem... if you have any other comments on the approach i've used, please share it with me...
    Thanks

    Hope the folling code snippet will help.
    jTableModel.setDataVector(rowVector,tableColumnVector);
    //get the table model and pass it in setModel() method or use the global Modal object.
    jTable.setModel(jctableModel);
    tableModelEvent=new TableModelEvent(jctableModel);
    Thanks,

  • DND in the same JTable (rows)

    Hi,
    First, sorry for my english, I come from Montral, Quebec, so my mothertongue is French! But I feel good to read in English.
    I my project, I have to implement Drag n drop in the same JTable, that contain just String elements (In fact, my JTable works like a ListView in C).
    It seems like my JTable can be a Drag Source or a Drop destination, but not both for the same dnd operation. I would like to select some rows(not columns) and change the index of those rows with a drag n drop operation.
    Is it possible?

    Hi,
    It is possible to drag n drop the Objects within the table. The following sample code deals with single transfer and interchange the data between the rows. Pls. use the MultipleTransfer for multiple Object Drag n drop.
    public class TableDND extends JTable implements DropTargetListener,DragSourceListener, DragGestureListener {
    //JTable methods
    //DND methods
    private int mRow; // remember the row where the drag Started
    private int mColumn; // remember the Column where the drag Started
    private Object mDataToSet; // remember the data where the drag Started
    public void dragDropEnd(DragSourceDropEvent dsde) {
              // TODO Auto-generated method stub
    ((DefaultTableModel)getModel()).setValueAt(mDataToSet,mRow,mColumn);
    public void dragGestureRecognized(DragGestureEvent dge) {
              // TODO Auto-generated method stub
    Point pt = dge.getDragOrigin();
    mRow = rowAtPoint(pt);
    mColumn = columnAtPoint(pt);
    Object obj = getValueAt(mRow,mColumn);
    StringSelection transferData = new StringSelection(obj.toString());
    mDragSource.startDrag(dge,DragSource.DefaultMoveDrop,transferData, this);
    public void drop(DropTargetDropEvent dtde) {
              // TODO Auto-generated method stub
    try {
    Point p = dtde.getLocation();
    int row = rowAtPoint(p);
    int column = columnAtPoint(p);
    mDataToSet = getValueAt(row,column);
                   Transferable transferData = dtde.getTransferable();
                   Object data = transferData.getTransferData(DataFlavor.stringFlavor);
    ((DefaultTableModel)getModel()).setValueAt(data,row, column);
              } catch (Exception e) {
    Have a nice time.

  • DnD with JTree

    Hi All,
    I am creating two JTree ojects and registering it for DnD by calling method setDragEnabled(true). I created Class that extends from TransferHandler which contains all the required method including importData(). I have also created class for Transferable. But when i try to perform drag from one tree and drop it on another tree it is not working, but if I do it on the same tree it is working fine which I don't want to do. Here are the code snippets that create tree object and initialization.
    JPanel panel = new JPanel();
    JTree onTree = new JTree(new Vector());
    onTree.setCellRenderer(new MyTreeCellRenderer());
    onTree.setShowsRootHandles(true);
    transferHandler1 = new MyTransferHandler();
    onTree.setTransferHandler(transferHandler1);
    onTree.setDragEnabled(true);
    MyObjectJB myObj = (MyObjectJB) createData();
    AdPlanningTreeNode root = new AdPlanningTreeNode(spot);
    AdPlanningTreeNode spotNode = constructSubTree(root, spot);
    JTree offTree = new JTree(root);
    offTree.setCellRenderer(new DisplayTreeCellRenderer());
    offTree.setShowsRootHandles(true);
    transferHandler2 = new DisplayTransferHandler();
    offTree.setTransferHandler(transferHandler2);
    offTree.setDragEnabled(true);
    AdPlanningJScrollPane offScroller = new AdPlanningJScrollPane(offTree);
    AdPlanningJScrollPane onScroller = new AdPlanningJScrollPane(onTree);
    panel.add(offScroller);
    panel.add(onScroller);Here is code in importData() method of MyTransferHandler.
    public boolean importData(JComponent comp, Transferable t) {
    boolean isImported = false;
    try {
         if (!canImport(comp, t.getTransferDataFlavors())) {
              System.out.println("MyTransferHandler.importData ; can not import");
              return false;
         JTree targetTree = (JTree) comp;
         TreePath parentPath = targetTree.getSelectionPath();
         MyTreeNode parentNode = null;
         DefaultTreeModel model = (DefaultTreeModel) targetTree.getModel();
         MyObject item = (MyObject) DeepCopyUtil.createDeepCopy(t.getTransferData(SUPPORTED_FLAVORS));
         MyTreeNode node = new MyTreeNode((MyObjectJB) item);
         if (parentPath == null) {
              model.setRoot(node);
              targetTree.setSelectionRow(0);
              targetTree.repaint();
         else {
              parentNode = (MyTreeNode) parentPath.getLastPathComponent();
              model.insertNodeInto(node, parentNode, 0);
         isImported = true;
    catch (UnsupportedFlavorException e) {
         e.printStackTrace();
         return false;
    catch (IOException e) {
         e.printStackTrace();
         return false;
    catch (Exception e) {
         e.printStackTrace();
         return false;
    System.out.println("DisplayTransferHandler.importData completed");
    return isImported;
    One important thing is after dragging and importData method calls
    model.setRoot(node), then model is showing change in data but not reflected in Tree.

  • From Database into JTable

    Hi!
    I have a ResultSet from a database query (select * from table) and I plan to turn it into a Object[][] in order to satisfy one of the DefaultTableModel's constructor ("DefaultTableModel(Object[][] data, Object[] columnNames)") and place it in a JTable - how do I go about in doing this.
    I tried this:
    myJTable.setModel(new DefaultTableModel(getData(rs),columnNames));
    private Object getData(ResultSet rs){
    java.util.ArrayList<Object[]> mySets = new java.util.ArrayList<Object[]>();
    try{
    while(rs.next()){
    Object[] row = {
    rs.getString("column1"), rs.getString("column2"), new Boolean(false)
    ResultSets.add(row);
    catch(Exception e){
    e.printStackTrace();
    return mySets;
    But got this error when I compiled:
    cannot find symbol
    symbol : constructor DefaultTableModel(java.lang.Object,java.lang.String[])
    location: class javax.swing.table.DefaultTableModel
    new DefaultTableModel(
    1 error
    BUILD FAILED (total time: 0 seconds)
    I'm trying to do this because I would want to have my JTable to have a checkbox in it like what's shown in the Java tutorial's SimpleTableDemo.java.
    Basically, am getting data directly from the database - those that are set to 1 is enabled and 0 to disabled, then represent those as check boxes in the JTable.
    Thank you so much for your help!

    Thanks calvino_ind!
    I've managed to get your suggestion to work:
                while(rs.next()){
                    for(int i = 0; i < row; i++){
                        for(int j = 0; j < col; j++){
                            obj[i][j] = rs.getObject(j+1);
                        rs.next();
                }Issues:
    I had to define the number of rows in order to initialize the Object's size:
                Object[][] obj = new Object[number of rows][number of columns];*column size can be retrieved from what's shown in previous post.
    To get the number of rows I had to do this:
                while(rs.next()){ row++; }But in doing so, the cursor moves to the last row of the ResultSet. To move it back I had to execute this:
                rs.beforeFirst();Here's the whole section of the code that's been my concern:
        private Object[][] getData(ResultSet rs){
            Object[][] obj = null;
            int row = 0;
            int col = 0;
            ResultSetMetaData rsmd;
            try{
                rsmd = rs.getMetaData();
                while(rs.next()){ row++; }
                System.out.println(rs.getFetchSize());
                col = rsmd.getColumnCount();
                obj = new Object[row][col];
                rs.beforeFirst();
                while(rs.next()){
                    for(int i = 0; i < row; i++){
                        for(int j = 0; j < col; j++){
                            obj[i][j] = rs.getObject(j+1);
                        rs.next();
            }catch(Exception e){
                e.printStackTrace();
            return obj;
        }Now I did a little bit of fiddling around the forums, and came across a discussion that's it's not advisable to get the row count (second post of this link: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=683676&messageID=3982010).
    Anyone care to shed some more light into this?
    Thanks!

    I want to remove a node from a JTree but the node may or maynot be visible.
    My method takes a String which is the name of the node.
    The nodes im using are DefaultMutableTreeNode
    This is my code so far but it doesnt work.
    public void removePerson(String pName)
              TreePath node = tree.getNextMatch(pName,0,Position.Bias.Forward);
              tree.expandPath(node);
              tree.removeSelectionPath(node);
    }Any Suggestions or ways which i could achive this?
    Thank you,

    I don't think removeSelectionPath is what you want to use.
    These should help:
