DNS Management in OS 10.6.3 Server

We are currently running Mac OS 10.4.11 server, and we will soon be upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.3 server on a new Xserve, and I have a question about how DNS is managed in Mac OS 10.6.3 server.
We run DNS internally only. On our 10.4.11 server, we switched to manually editing our zone files in command line rather than managing our DNS records in Server Admin because of a couple of problems.
Let's use mydomain.com as our example domain. Server Admin automatically makes the 'A' record of the zone (mydomain.com) as the same IP address as the OS X server itself (host.mydomain.com / 192.168.0.5). Our problem is that our company's website is hosted offsite. So, if someone on our LAN opens a web browser with the domain, mydomain.com, it opens to an error (instead of our website) as our OS X server is not running web services. For a number of reasons, our web developer has the website setup as domain.com and redirects any requests to www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com because the SSL certificate and search engines were setup for the address mydomain.com INSTEAD of www.mydomain.com. We cannot change this until the next overhaul of our website (which could be years).
As a workaround, I went into command line and started editing our zone files manually. So, I changed the 'A' record of mydomain.com to be the IP address of the server that is hosting our website externally. That fixes our problem.
However, editing zone files in command line has its own problems, and I would prefer to do it from Server Manager.
So, does Server Manager in 10.6 have the same problem in that it makes the address for the 'A' record for mydomain.com the same as our OS X server host.mydomain.com?
And secondly, is there another way in our OS X server of directing internal web requests from LAN workstations for mydomain.com on port 80 and 443 to our website that is hosted offsite?
And thirdly, would it be better to register a second domain, mydomaininternal.com (for example), and use this zone on our OS X server rather than using mydomain.com?
Thanks for any advice.
Tyler

Thanks.
I should have mentioned that I already have an 'A' Record setup for www which points to the external IP of the site. The problem is our web hosting company has an internal redirect on the server hosting our website directing 'www' to 'yourcompanysite.com' (for the reasons I mentioned in the previous post) so of course when the workstations on our LAN query the DNS server (If we were to use Server Manager) it would automatically set the IP address for 'yourcompanysite.com' to the IP address of the OS X Server. So in Mac OS 10.6 server is it possible to manage DNS using Server Manager without it automatically making the A record for 'yourcompanysite.com.' the same address as the server?
My xserve is scheduled to ship out next week, so I am just doing some prelimary thinking and planning.
Thanks!

  • Some Hostname is not seen in DNS Manager ( Windows Server 2008 )

    Hi All,
DC Server OS - Windows Server 2008 R2 ( Active Directory Integrated DNS Zone ) Client OS - Windows 7
I am unable to understand, why some hostname are not dynamically registered in DNS Manager. For example -My windows7 which is added to corp.abc.com domain. Don't show in DNS manager.
I don't want to create this hostname statically on DNS manager.
I have tried couple of resolution i.e ipconfig /registerdns, restarted DNS Client / DHCP Client server, restarted computer still unable to see hostname name entry in DNS manager. 2 days has passed, still it has not come-up in DNS manager. I have also check
Advanced TCP/IP settings. Please see print-screen of nslookup & Advanced TCP/IP Settings.
Kindly suggest, what should i do, to resolve this problem.

I would first recommend checking that Dynamic DNS updates are configured (I would recommend having it set to Secure only).
I started yesterday a Wiki article describing that: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/21984.how-to-secure-dns-updates-on-microsoft-dns-servers.aspx
Please also check that your primary DNS suffix using ipconfig /all. It should be matching the computer domain name. If anything is wrong, you can change it by using the following: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/3720415a-6a9a-4bca-aa2a-6df58a1a47d7/change-primary-dns-suffix?forum=winservercore
If this do not help, you can try to temporary disable your security software installed on your computer, check the network filtering and use Wireshark to see what happens when you run
    ipconfig /registerdns.

    thanks for your help

Is this a DSfW server? Because on a DSfW server you have to use port
1636 instead of 636 to connect to the Edir side of the server.
Don't try to use port 389 (or 1389 on a DSfW server) as this does only
work on servers which are specifically configured to allow that.

    Hello LuongDK,
Please refer to the FAQ section on http://service.sap.com/solutionmanager, Check the installations section:
Which system should I use to install SAP Solution Manager?
The system has to be dedicated to the SAP Solution Manager. No other components can be installed on top of SAP Solution Manager.
SAP Solution Manager does not necessarily require separate hardware. It can be installed as a separate instance on an existing hardware.
This means that the hardware can be shared if it is sufficient to support 2 systems. However a MCOD option is not recommended at all.

  • How to install both solution manager and ECC Development on same server

    Hi All,
Can anyone help me how to install Solution Manager and ECC Development on same server and also whether SLD is required? if yes, then how to setup.
    Pls let me know.
    Regards,
    Karthik

    Hi Karthik,
I try to answer you message, my answer may not be sufficient for you.
Install SAP Solution Manager and ECC development as separate systems sharing the same server. So each system will get it's own system id and installation number.
    Verify sizing of both systems.
SLD is not mandatory for a SAP Solution Manager. If a SLD already exist in your System Landscape, you can connect SMSY (System Landscape) in transaction SMSY_SETUP with a SLD. Information on System will then be retrieved from SLD, rather via an RFC.

  • Work Manager API in Sun Java Application Server 8.1

I am trying to build a parallel application using Work Manager api (javax.resource.spi.work.WorkManager;)
I studied the Websphere implementation of WorkManager there you need to make JNDI lookup for work manager and then use it to submit the work.
My question is if i make class which will implement the javax.resource.spi.work.WorkManager; interface and use that class to submit the work and execute it in parallel then will that class will handle the resource management and all j2ee services
Do we have separate implementation of work manager API for Sun Java Application Server 8.1 (any jar like asynch.jar in IBM websphere) so that we will just create a work manager using admin console and make JNDI lookup and use it
    Please guide me

Before I start, disclaimer -- I have no knowledge of Hibernate and the following comments are based on the stack trace you have included.
I think your permissions might be set all right but you might have an error in the hibernate query. It looks like hibernate uses antlr to parse the queries. While parsing the query, antlr is encountering an exceptional condition and is trying to exit the VM (by calling System.exit()). Obviously, the hibernate code does not have that permission and therefore the exception is logged.
My guess is if you fix the query such that hibernate/antlr can parse it, you will not run into this error.
    Hope this helps,

  • DNS FQDN Mavericks 1.9.0 and Server 3.0.1

    Hello everyone.
I’m tstill on my Maverick test server and I can’t get my DNS right. Please help.
    Mavericks 10.9.0 on Server 3.0.1 on 1 MBPro 2011
Mavericks 10.9.0 Client on 2 MacBook Air 2011
Lets say I registered example.com with easydns registrar.
My registrar points to my dynamic IP which only changes only every 8 to 12 months.
Everything look pointed right from my registrar as I hosted test servers many times before.
Coming into the house, I have a 2Wire 2701HG-S Gateway DSL 1.5 Mb/s Modem that does DHCP, NAT and port forwarding * But it does not do any DNS or provide FQDN forward or reverse.
All it does is allocate IPs and slips the ISP search domain and it’s own address for DNS.
I tried with a Linksys WRV201 which only supports DynDNS or TZO
So, for the moment,  I guess. I’m cornered.
1- Do I read correctly that as long as I do not have another machine (Linux, Window, Older Mac server or special router) on my Intranet that does DNS of Mavericks’s FQDN forward and reverse, It is useless for me to even install Server 3.0.1 on Mavericks?
2- Once Mavericks is all installed and self pointing and clients configured to look it up, Can I get rid of the other server that would be just there to FQDN Mavericks server?
3- Can I just take one of my MacBook Air clients, give it a static IP, activate bing and it acts like a DNS server the time that I Get Mavericks server up?
    Francois.

Relevant to your gateway device (whatever's at the edge and performing NAT for you), but largely irrelevent to your server and the rest of your local network.

What's happening with dynamic DNS and the rest is all outside your network perimeter, and largely irrelevent to anything other than remotely accessing your network.

Your local DNS is the DNS service on your network, and Mavericks Server (and most other servers these days) expects functional local DNS, and most servers (including Mavericks Server) can be configured to provide local DNS, as can some mid-grade firewalls.
No ISP and no dynamic DNS provider can get you local IP address to domain (host) name translations.
Name to address is what everybody's familiar with, but address to name is the basis for SMTP mail spam checks (on the open internet) as well as certificate security and related processing; of user and host authentication.
    estrois.me.com wrote:
2- Once Mavericks is all installed and self pointing and clients configured to look it up, Can I get rid of the other server that would be just there to FQDN Mavericks server?
Your local network has a local address space, and your Mavericks Server can and usually should have its own domain name in a domain you've registered, or a subdomain of a domain that you've registered, and not in a domain that's registered by your dynamic DNS provider.  It's possible to use a bogus domain, but thousands of new top-level domains are coming online.   (OS X will not react well to finding its IP addresses differ from the public translation, and you probably don't want to have to mirror all of the dynamic DNS provider DNS locally.)
    estrois.me.com wrote:
3- Can I just take one of my MacBook Air clients, give it a static IP, activate bing and it acts like a DNS server the time that I Get Mavericks server up?
Mavericks Server will install and boot with local DNS running, if you don't (incorrectly) tell it to use off-LAN DNS, such as that at a dynamic provider or at your ISP.  (Neither of which provide translations for a NAT'd network, hence mismatched names or changing names or other oddities, hence server confusion.)  You'll get a one-host zone with whatever domain you've chosen, with the local IP address as the translation.
First step after the Mavericks Install (and preferably after registering a domain for your internal use) is configuring DNS on Mavericks Server for your new server and your new domain, setting up static addresses and names for network printers and the internal IP address of your gateway and other such, and assigning the Mavericks Server DNS server IP address to your DHCP server as the DNS server address to vend to clients.
Here's a write-up on the confusion that can arise around dynamic DNS.  Dynamic DNS is good for remote access into your network when you've only got a dynamic IP address but — whether due to other DNS-related issues or ISP port blocks and blacklists that are common with the dynamic IP tier of service, you may eventually graduate to using static IP.  Dynamic IP is good for remote connections into your network, but not so good when you're connecting out for SMTP mail or other services.
FWIW, while you're setting up the network, get out of 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24, as — if you ever decide you want to VPN into your network — the VPN server will have issues.  These subnets are used all over the 'net, and VPNs are based on IP routing, and IP routing doesn't work well when the same subnet is on both ends of the connection.  There are other subnets in 192.168.0.0/16, and there are two other available private address blocks to use.  Changing the IP subnet block is feasible at any time, but the more entrenched the references to the subnet become within your environment, the more effort is required to change it.  Better to get out of the way of any potential VPN usage earlier, rather than later.

  • I'm currently having issues with workgroup  manager on 10.6 OS X Server

Some of the preferences managed on the server are not getting pushed out to client machines. When dock settings are set and managed as always, only some are being pushed through to 10.6.8 and some 10.7 clients. I have checked the version of workgroup manager on both server and client to make sure that they are the same. Is there a way that workgroup manager can be reinstalled on the server?. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I enabled all users in my AD "Domain Users" group access to "Profile Manager". I had also initially enabled "Profile Manager" access for a few individual users. Those users did not loss the device assignments. I'm not absolutely sure why/if allowing access for a group is causing this issue. Enabling access for each person would be very time consuming.... Maybe adding access to the individual users is importing that user into OD?

  • Apply Solution Manager to existing IDES ECC 6 server

    Hi There,
Can anyone teach me how to apply Solution manager to existing IDES ECC 6 server. Exactly to say, i dont know how to start this installation.
    Any responses will be awarded!
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
SAP does not support any Add-On installation on IDES system, neither update, neither additional component.
Solution Manager should be installed as separate system, based on specific installation kit. You can contact your account manager in order to obtain it. SolMan if free of fee product.

What you are looking for is called Grid Control.
You will need the Grid Control Agent installed on each server that has products from Oracle's technology stack installed (database, web server, app server, etc). You will also need install the Grid Control software and repository.
You can download Grid Control from the following link:
