DNS name for sql clustering instance name
Hi all,
sql 2005 or sql 2008 clustering on windows 2008 R2
We create sql 2005 or sql 2008 clustering. The sql clustering
instance name (DNS name) was created manaully or created automatically in DNS.
is it issue if sql instance name was created manaully in DNS?
Thank you.
Hi,
For the manual create the CNO usually cause may issue, you'd better don't use that method.

We have two physical servers hosting 3 SQL 2012 clustered instances, one default instance and two named instances.
The default instance is using port 1433 and the two named instances are using dynamic port assignment.
There is discussion about assigning static port numbers to the two named clustered SQL instances.
What is considered best-practice? For clustered named instances to have dynamic or static ports?
Are there any pitfalls to assigning a static port to a named instance that is a cluster?
Any help is greatly appreciatedHi RobinMCBC,
In SQL server the default instance has a listener which listens on the fixed port which is TCP port 1433. And for the named instance the port on which the SQL server listens is random and is dynamically selected when the named instance of the SQL server
starts.
For Standalone instance of the SQL server we can change the dynamic port of the named instance to the static port by using SQL server configuration manager as other post, however, in case of the cluster, when we change the port no. of the named instance
to the static port using the method described above, the port no. again changes back to the dynamic port after you restart the services. I recommend you changing the Dynamic port of the SQL Server to static port
on all the nodes , disabling and enabling the checkpointing to the quorum.
For more information, you can review the following article about how to change the dynamic port of the SQL Server named instance to an static port in a SQL Server 2005 cluster.

SQL clustered instance outgoing traffic
Hi,
I have an interesting issue I'm trying to solve. Hopefully I'm missing something really simple. Here's a description of our environment, and the issue I'm having.
2 node SQL 2008 R2 SP2 clustered named instance. There are a total of 4 instance names on the cluster.
Node 1 IP is 192.168.1.121
Node 2 IP is 192.168.1.122
Named instance IPs are 192.168.1.123 to 192.168.1.126
Now here's my dilemma. When I connect to a linked server from one of the 4 named instances, instead of the remote server seeing the named instance IP (eg, 192.168.1.126), it's seeing the IP of the node that is hosting that instance (eg, 192.168.1.121). This
is causing us an issue, as the remote SQL server is behind a firewall, and we expected it to use the instance IP and not the host IP. I have already tried to force the IP in the Server Configuration Manager for the instance name, but this has not
helped.
The server logs for the instance show it listening only on the instance IP (eg. 192.168.1.126 <ipv4> 1433).
All communications to the named instances use the correct IP, and not the node IP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Hugh McDaidHello Hugh,
You need to add an entry to your DNS server that resolves to the virtual IP used by each cluster role, and also add it as a resource for the corresponding role. Make sure the network interface used by SQL server outbound connections has its DNS server set
up correctly.
If that doesn't work, add the DNS name to your hosts file, pointing to the IP address.
"I have already tried to force the IP in the Server Configuration Manager for the instance name, but this has not helped."
So, you've set up an ALIAS for your sql server native client, right? Please note that there are two native clients installed in your servers, one for 32bit applications and the other for 64bits. Make sure the alias is set for BOTH clients. SSMS uses the
32bit aliases, and remember that they only apply locally. If you wanna work with them, tou need to configure the same aliases in each host that needs to connect to the instance.
Is this problem only happening between clustered instances? -
Cannot enable SSRT for SQL cluster
Hi Everyone
I'm running DPM 2012 SP1 (Not R2). I've having trouble enabling the self service recovery tool for a SQL cluster.
I can get to the next step when I add a different standalone SQL server, however anything to do with a cluster will not work.
I've been following this link:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj674322.aspx
Any ideas?Hi,
try this..
The SQL server instance field expects the following format for a clustered instance.
<Cluster network name>\<SQL virtual name>\<instance name>
The database name field may contain a valid database for that instance or be left blank for all databases in that instance.
To determine the component names for the wizard is to gather the information
from the DPM console. The DPM GUI shows the following for a protected cluster
instance.
Cluster Network Name: SQL Server (INSTANCE1).sqlserver.fourthcoffee.com
sqlv1n1\instance1\master
sqlv1n1\instance1\model
sqlv1n1\instance1\msdb
sqlv1n1\instance1\foo
To configure these databases in the SSRT configuration tool the following would be entered for the
SQL server instance name.
"SQL Server (INSTANCE1).sqlserver.fourthcoffee.com\sqlv1n1\instance1"

SQL Clustering on C Series server with QLE8152-CNA cards
Is there any documentation on best practices when installing Windows on a c series server
with QLE8152-CNA cards for SQL clustering? Since it will be a bare metal install of Windows, this card will only present a maximum of 2 nics (FI A and FI B) to the Windows OS and because SQL clustering requires multiple nics (heartbeat, regular network), I wanted to know whethere there are guidelines on how to do this or whether it is even supported. I intend on using the failover feature in UCS Manager 1.4 when creating a service profile for these c series server which means I'll end up with 1 NIC presented to the Windows server. Thanks.Hi Keny,
I tried to powercycle both servers (c260M2 and C460M2) but still no discovered server and also no logg.
I checked
Rack Server Discovery Policy == immediate
Rack management Connecton Policy == Auto Achnowledged
Chassis/Fex Doscovery Policy == 2 Link and Port-Channel (As I installed 2232PP I moved to Port Channel)
I am running UCSM Version 2.1(1e)
FI 6248 Version 5.0(3)N2(2.11e)
2232PP run on same as FI
I also have a connected 5108 with IOM 2104 running on 2.1(1e) Version.
CIMC Version of C260M2 and C460M2 will be checked tomorrow when my kolleague is in the datacenter.
Server Connection is not really the same like in http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c-series_integration/ucsm2.1/b_UCSM2-1_C-Integration_chapter_011.html
Because I still have no VIC Card but the connections are the same.

I'm stuck here trying to figure this error out.
2003 domain, 2012 hyper v core 3 nodes. (I have two of these hyper V groups, hvclust2012 is the problem group, hvclust2008 is okay)
In Failover Cluster Manager I see these errors, "Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason: The handle is invalid."
I restarted the host node that was listed in having the error then another node starts showing the errors.
I tried to follow this site: http://blog.subvertallmedia.com/2012/12/06/repairing-a-failover-cluster-in-windows-server-2012-live-migration-fails-dns-cluster-name-errors/
Then this error shows up when doing the repair: there was an error repairing the active directory object for 'Cluster Name'
I looked at our domain controller and noticed I don't have access to local users and groups. I can access our other hvclust2008 (both clusters are same version 2012).
<image here>
I came upon this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/85fc2ad5-b0c0-41f0-900e-df1db8625445/windows-2012-cluster-resource-name-fails-dns-registration-evt-1196?forum=winserverClustering
Now, I'm stuck on adding a managed service account (mas). I'm not sure if I'm way off track to fix this. Any advice? Thanks in advance!
<image here>Thanks Elton,
I restarted 3 hosts after applying the hotfix. Then I did the steps below and got stuck on step 5. That is when I get the error (image above). There
was an error repairing the active directory object for 'Cluster Name'. For more data, see 'Information Details'.
To reset the password on the affected name resource, perform the following steps:
From Failover Cluster Manager, locate the name resource.
Right-click on the resource, and click Properties.
On the Policies tab, select If resource fails, do not restart, and then click OK.
Right-click on the resource, click More Actions, and then click Simulate Failure.
When the name resource shows "Failed," right-click on the resource, click More Actions, and then click Repair.
After the name resource is online, right-click on the resource, and then click Properties.
On the Policies tab, select If resource fails, attempt restart on current node, and then click OK.

DNS name lookup in clustering environment
Hi,
I have 2 managed servers hosted on different IP addresse in a cluster.
I have configured Cluster address in weblogic console to these 2 IP addreses seperated
by a comma.
If I am doing lookup for a session bean from my application, which URL i should
use in lookup?
If I have a DNS name configured, how I should use it? Can I lookup using DNS name
only?
For Ex this is what I have done-
I have 2 managed servers : 10.1.30.155 and 10.1.30.151
I have configured cluster addresses to '10.1.30.155, 10.1.30.151'
I am using url- 't3://DNSName' for Session Bean lookup.
Can any one guide me on this?
Thanks in advance.

Global query block is causing a DNS server to fail a query with error code Name Error exists in the DNS database for WPAD on a Windows 2008 server.
The global query block list is a feature that prevents attacks on your network by blocking DNS queries for specific host names. This feature has caused the DNS server to fail a query with error code NAME ERROR for wpad.contoso.com. even though data
for this DNS name exisits in the DNS database. Other queries in all locally authoritative zones for other names that begin with labels in the block list will also fail, but no event will be logged when further queries are blocked until the DNS server
service on this computer is restarted. -
How sharepoint understand when user requests for web applications by their DNS names
HI
I configured Alternate access mapping in my sharepoint farm for default ,intranet zones
and spt farm has two web front end servers and they load balancing by F5 device
in WFE servers there are different web applications are running on different ports
so here I want to know how load balancing works, load balancing configured in F5 device.
when users request a webapplication from browser (ex http://cms) where this request will go
1)when I ping cms and other web applicaations it returns me a loadbalancer server IP for all web applications;
ping cms : it returns 10.xxx.0.80 , same ip returns when I ping for other web app
but ex CMS web application run on the 10.xxx.1.26:81 port in sharepoint server
2) and these sharepoint web applications running on different ports in sharepoint web servers , so here how sharepoint understand when user requests for web applications by their DNS names
http://cms and http://products etc
adilI'm not sure if the F5 can add a port number (I'm not an expert on load balancers). But in general if you design the SharePoint site to run on port 81 then you need to have port 81 appended to the request or it won't work. http://cms in your
example would take you to http://cms:80 not http://cms:81. But in general DNS will resolve the address back to the F5 load balancer. The load balancer will look at the header of the HTTP request (which contains the original address you requested)
and forward the request to the appropriate web front end IP address. If your web front end is using one IP address for multiple sites then those sites need to be differntiated by using a custom port like 81 (which must be included in the original request)
or because a host header was bound to the web application when it was created. If they are running on different port numbers then the request must include the port number by the time it gets to the SharePoint server.

Management point and Distribution point behind netscaler for virtual ip/dns name
Is it supported to place a server behind a netscaler for using a virtual IP/DNS name?
We are looking into placing our distribution points and management points behind the netscaler to provide firewall functionality.
We would point our clients to a different DNS name for each individual MP and DP to provide routing through the netscaler.
As far as I know this is only possible using IBCM.
Please let me know if this is possible without IBCM internally.Using a different DNS name is problematic as there is no way to specify an alternate fqdn for a site system on the intranet. Clients use the actual fqdn of the system hosting the role; this is given out by the MP directly to the client based upon the site
system's actual name.
You could manipulate name resolution in a variety ways so ultimately the actual IP used wouldn't matter, but that's useless unless the client is using the proper name.
If you you could use the same name and IP, then it should work no problem as long as the traffic is properly delivered to the site system. Ultimately, nearly all client agent to site system traffic is nothing more than WebDAV via IIS on the site system so
just basic web traffic.

Setting DNS TTL to 0 for specific DNS names and IPs
A company we do business with has a service we are trying to contact over the internet. They have requested that we set the TTL for their DNS and IPs on a specific port to 0. Im having a hard time understanding what they are asking for. I thought that
DNS ttl is generally set by the Registrar. And can you even have ttl on an ip address? That doesnt make any sense tome. They are asking for screen shots of nslookups of 3 ips on port 1443 and they want to see the ttl set to 0. How would I do that on SBS2011/Server2008r2?
Obvously I only want this on the 3 ips and the dns name, I dont want to set the whole DNS infrastructre to a ttl of 0.Sounds screwy to me!

Unable to set (ssl) certificate on a SQL Server 2012 clustered instance
Hello everyone!
I'm trying to encrypt the SQL Server communication with SSL but I can't add the certificate in the configuration manager. I've found and tried a lot of different explaination but none of them worked. I'll described what I've done and hope someone will point
out what I'm missing.
Here is my situation:
- SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition. Instance name = INSTANCE, FQDN = SQINSTANCE.mydomain.com. The instance is running under a customized service account: mydomain\sql_sa
- Two cluster nodes running Win Server 2008R2: NODE1.mydomain.com and NODE2.mydomain.com. Cluster itself is CLUSTER.mydomain.com
What I've done:
1) Asked the team in charge to generate a certificate issued to "SQINSTANCE.mydomain.com" with aliases to "NODE1.mydomain.com", "NODE2.mydomain.com" and "CLUSTER.mydomain.com". I get a certificate with "p7b"
as extension
2) Connect on "NODE2.mydomain.com" with account "mydomain\sql_sa". Opened MMC and added the certificate under "Personnal" folder. I tried to add it with "Current user" and "Local computer" settings. Saw both
on internet since I use a specific service account
3) Get the thumbprint of the certificate and add it under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.INSTANCE\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib\Certificate. (I triple checked to remove blanks or special characters)
4) Reboot the node
5) Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager, go to the network properties. Certificate does not appear in the list
I tried to check with certutil and saw the certificate in the output. Some guys talked about some private key but I don't see this particularity in my situation. I tried to check if the certificate is valid and, according to the criterias, it is.
Does anyone can help me with this?Hi,
Are you sure you've got the certificate correct? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191192.aspx
To use encryption with a failover cluster, you must install the server certificate with the fully qualified DNS name of the virtual server
on all nodes in the failover cluster. For example, if you have a two-node cluster, with nodes named test1.<your
company>.com and test2.<your
company>.com, and you have a virtual server named virtsql, you need to install a certificate for virtsql.<your
company>.com on both nodes. You can set the value of the ForceEncryptionoption
toYes
In your case, shouldn't it be created for CLUSTER.mydomain.com?
Thanks, Andrew
