DNS requests from Solaris 10 box to Bind/MySQL DNS server fail

We have some servers running solaris 9 and some running solaris 10. We also have a DNS server setup running BIND with the MySQL backend. When I query the DNS server from our solaris 9 boxes, they always work just fine. However, when I query the DNS server from our solaris 10 boxes, they always fail. Queries to other DNS servers from the Solaris 10 boxes work just fine - they only fail when being sent to this particular DNS server. Here's exactly what I'm doing:
ON SOLARIS 9 BOX:
bash-3.00$ nslookup google.com calo-sunset
Server: calo-sunset
Address: <IP_OF_DNS_SERVER>#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: google.com
Address: 64.233.187.99
Name: google.com
Address: 72.14.207.99
Name: google.com
Address: 209.85.171.99
ON SOLARIS 10 BOX:
bash-2.05$ nslookup google.com calo-sunset
*** Can't find server name for address <IP_OF_DNS_SERVER>: Non-existent host/domain
*** Default servers are not available
In the case of the SOLARIS 10 box, <IP_OF_DNS_SERVER> is correct - it knows the IP address of the DNS server, but apparently it doesn't recognize that it's actually a DNS server.
I am utterly perplexed by this. It seems to me that a DNS request is a DNS request, regardless of your OS. Clearly something is different from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10 though because the requests fail on all of our solaris 10 boxes, and they succeed on all of our Solaris 9 boxes. Incidentally, dig requests from the Solaris 10 box also fail, where they succeed on the Solaris 9 boxes.
I don't really know what other information I could offer that might be useful. If you have any information at all about this or ideas on what I might try to troubleshoot/fix it, I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance.

First off, I am an idiot. I got this entire post backwards. The fact is that the DNS requests work swimmingly well on our Solaris 10 boxes. They fail on our Solaris 9 boxes. I don't know how I managed to read this post all of these times and not notice that I got that backwards. Nice.
In any case, I've found the problem. It was non-trivial to me because I am not terribly familiar with the inner-workings of DNS. To those who are, it may seem painfully obvious. To me it certainly was not.
The problem was that the DNS server (BIND 9 with MySQL backend) did not contain a reverse DNS entry for itself. Apparently this is a big problem for Solaris 9. I got a hint that this might be the cause when I turned on verbose debugging info when I ran nslookup (nslookup -d2). I had to add the PTR record for the DNS server itself. I don't know why Solaris 9 would require that a DNS server contain reverse DNS information about itself, but sure enough it does. As soon as I added that info, the Solaris 9 boxes were able to successfully query the DNS server. Very odd.
Anyway, I doubt anyone else will come across this problem, but if you do, now you know something that might fix it.

  • How to reverse Transport requests from sand box to development client

    Dear all,
I am doing some testing on Sand box, I made some transport requests from development to sandbox, which effected some settings in sandbox.
Now I want to reverse those transport request from sand box to development, unfortunately I didn't make any note of transport requests which I transported from Development to Sandbox.
Please educate me how to reverse transport requests from sand box to development.
    your suggestions are highly appreciated
    thank you
    Venu Gopal

There is no reverse, you have to create a new transport with the original settings.
Programs keep track of their versions and are easier to pull a previous version, configuration can be tougher, open all the folders in SE10 to see if you can determine the configuration changes.

  • Is request from client's PC or my database server?

    Hi, guys:
I am new to APEX. I would ask a question that may be silly. I need to develop a database project with APEX and Google map service. I notice there is limit for Google map service. I would assume if I write javascript code in APEX and send request to Google such as loading a map, the request is sent from client browser directly to Google map server, not from my database server to Google map server, so my application won't break the service limit. Is this assumption correct?
    Thanks a lot!
    Sam

    Hi,
Thanks for your help. I am concerned because Google may stop service as folllows. If the request is sent from a client PC, database server won't break quota assigned. Otherwise, we have to find another solution.
    Sam
    Usage Limits
Use of the Google Geocoding API is subject to a query limit of 2,500 geolocation requests per day. (User of Google Maps API for Business may perform up to 100,000 requests per day.) This limit is enforced to prevent abuse and/or repurposing of the Geocoding API, and this limit may be changed in the future without notice. Additionally, we enforce a request rate limit to prevent abuse of the service. If you exceed the 24-hour limit or otherwise abuse the service, the Geocoding API may stop working for you temporarily. If you continue to exceed this limit, your access to the Geocoding API may be blocked.
Note: the Geocoding API may only be used in conjunction with a Google map; geocoding results without displaying them on a map is prohibited. For complete details on allowed usage, consult the Maps API Terms of Service License Restrictions.

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle Database 10g R2 and Oracle Developer 10gR2.
I installed it in both Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP SP2.
I would like to call a Report using a button inside Oracle Form.
I create my own Report Server, using : rwserver server=repsrv
A Java-based window appear OracleAS Reports Sevice, and showed that repsrv is ready.
    In Form (inside a button -> WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED) :
    1. Using RUN_REPORT_OBJECT()
       rep_id := find_report_object('REPORT10');
         if not id_null(rep_id) then
           v_rep := run_report_object(rep_id);
         else
              message('Null');
       end if;
       a. If I did not specify the name of the Report Server in Reports node of Form's property object
    (I leave it blank)
    The following error appear :

    b. If I specify the name of the Report Server : repsrv
    The following error appear :

    2. Using WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT()
    a. If did not I specify the server name in the parameter
WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT('http://localhost:8889/reports/rwservlet/getjobid'|| SUBSTR(v_rep,INSTR(v_rep,'_',-1)+1)||'?'||,'_blank');Another web browser appear and the following error appear :

    In Report :
If I try to navigate manually to :
    1. http://localhost:8889/reports/rwservlet using web browser.
It showed OracleAS Report Services - Servlet Command Help page.
    2. http://localhost:8889/reports/rwservlet?userid=scott/tiger@orcl&report=D:\PRACTICE\FORM\MODULE1.JSP&destype=cache&desformat=html
    The following error occured
REP-51002: Bind to Reports Server rep_<computer_name> failed
    3. Finally,
    http://localhost:8889/reports/rwservlet?server=REPSRV&userid=scott/tiger@orcl&report=C:\PRACTICE\FORM\MODULE1.JSP&destype=cache&desformat=html
    The following error occured
REP-51002: Bind to Reports Server repsrv failed
    4. Any attempt to different command (i.e showenv, showjobs, etc) seems failed
If I did not specify the server then REP-51002: Bind to Reports Server rep_<computer_name> failed
If I specify the server - 'repsrv' then REP-51002: Bind to Reports Server repsrv failed
    5. I have tried to use rwrun in command line.
    rwrun report="D:\My Documents\form\module1.jsp" userid=scott/tiger@orcl destype=file desformat=pdf desname="D:\My Documents\form\module2.pdf"
The PDF file created and it looks exactly as the web layout as in Oracle Report Builder (Run Web Layout CTRL-R)
    Question :
    1. What supposed to be done?
The Report server is ready, but the web browser seems unable to connect to Report Server.
    2. Can we used or call or executed an executable command line from Form (using PL/SQL inside button)?
    Any help would be grateful.
    Many thanks,
    Buntoro

    Hi Buntoro,
Try out the following format....with web.show_document
    URL_VAR:='/reports/rwservlet?server='||rep_server_name_var||'&report='||report_path_var||'\'||report_file_var||'&desformat='||desformat_var||'&destype='||destype_var||'&userid='||username_var||'/'||password_var||'@'||tns_var||'&paramform='||param_form_var;
    WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT(URL_VAR,'_parent');
where ...._var are the specific variables...

  • SNMP Requests from Solaris

Hi, I am new to Solaris and have some questions about SNMP.
Does Solaris (9,10) include any binaries that allow you to make SNMP request to external equipment such as routers or other SNMP hardware?
I am considering the possibility of using a shell script to pull SNMP data from network elements, save it to a text file and render it to a web page.
Does that sound about right? I figured if binaries exist for this than it should be doable.
    Thanks

  • Upgrade from Solaris 8 (5.8) to 5.10 fails

    Hi everyone...
Here is a curly one for the Sun gurus.
I attempted to perform the upgrade from Sol 8 (Dec/02) to Sol 10 (from the CD/DVD Jan/06) and got all the way past the "Test Upgrade Profile". The initialize started after I clicked onto the gui "Install Now" button. However, it fails after an hour or so - each an every time.
We have the 4.2.1 DiskSuite defined on a 3310 disk array and well as the 2 system disks - which are striped and mirrored. I can not do a Live Upgrade as I don't have a spare disk, so Sun Support in India suggested I do the upgrade in place...but is crashs attempting to copy files from the CD to the Server, as well as , so other strange error messages?
The first attempt was to leave vfstab untouched, the 2nd was to comment out the disk array (D30, D31, & D32) devices. But both fail. The install logs will be uploaded.

Now initially I had to add a number of packages/patches via the note 72099 that was displayed at the very beginning of the Sol 10 upgrade. Also, do and check the necessary bits via document 16141-1.
But the upgrade just fails. I would like to keep the disk array and its data intact for the upgrade as it has Oracle 11i Apps databases and its a bit of work redefining the metastat and loading Oracle, and the other bits it needs, as well as Netbackup etc.
So, are there are any bright sparks out there that can help?

  • How can I get thunderbird to download messages from SENT box in my talktalk pop3 server

I am occasionally away from my laptop (i.e. thunderbird) and need to send messages by logging directly into my talktalk mail......... but I want to see them downloaded the same as incoming messages when I open thunderbird on my laptop.

You get talk talk to implement the IMAP mail protocol instead of POP. You other choice is to copy the messages to the inbox to be downloaded. Messy, but it works.

  • SL constantly making DNS requests for "local" ?

I've been troubleshooting a problem with my DSL router crashing and noticed that my Macs continuously, even when idle, have nearly 200 open connections at any given time, whereas my Windows boxes peak at 50 and drop down to under 10 when idle. The Macs are running SL 10.6.2.
Poking around in the router logs, I found that the Macs are constantly making udp DNS requests to my router, even when I'm not browsing or doing anything else. tcpdump of udp and port 53 gives me the following:

192.168.0.8 is my Mac and 192.168.0.1 is my DSL router. The Mac is ip'd using DHCP on the router. The router sends DNS requests from my clients out to my ISPs DNS servers.
Eventually, the DNS requests timeout and I get this:
    00:21:43.145103 IP 205.171.3.65.53 > 192.168.0.8.52959: 38258 NXDomain 0/1/0 (98)

    00:21:44.049705 IP 205.171.3.65.53 > 192.168.0.8.59991: 5960 NXDomain 0/1/0 (98)
It's a never-ending cycle that eventually kills my router.
If I'm reading the tcpdump output correctly, SL appears to be looking for some server named "local" 3 times every second. The TTL is roughly 90 seconds, so 3 requests/second gets me to an average of 180 connections at any give time -- which is approximately what my router is showing. If I do start browsing the connection count goes even higher. Trying to use both Macs at the same time has caused my router to crash due to running out of memory (it's obviously a very weak router .
Can someone give me some insight into what SL is doing and how I can stop this?
    Thanks,
    Randy

Does this server handle DNS requests?
If so, make sure under the local static IP for DNS servers you can try 127.0.0.1, and server IP.
Under the DNS tab make sure you have the ISP IP's under forwarder.
As a safety open terminal and run
    su changeip -checkhostname

  • WRT1900AC: Can it block DNS requests?

    Hello,
Can the WRT1900AC block DNS request from devices in a home network to public DNS service like GoogleDNS? Can anyone tell me what steps are necessary to accomplish this?
I tried to follow instructions found on the web but I could not add static routes under Advanced Routing, I got errors either about the network submask or the Gateway (mine is 192.168.1.1 and is not accepted). i don't know what to enter in these fields and also what Interface to select (LAN/Wireless or Internet).
    My firmware version is 1.1.8.164461.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thank you,
    Luiz

    Hi,
Thanks for replying. I haven't contacted support yet to confirm you suspicion, My cable modem is a Motorola SB6141. I have done some basic research that indicates that it is not capable of NAT.
However, I was able to configure a static route in my router, using the cable modem IP asgateway. After this my ping requests to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) started to fail. This is probably still not what I need. I don't understand why I can't save my router's IP as gateway as indicated here: http://help.unotelly.com/support/solutions/articles/193662-setup-static-routes-on-linksys-and-cisco-... This link alerts to a bug in Linksys routers but the error message I get is not "invalid static route" as indicated.
    Thanks,

  • Need to Clone A Database From Solaris to Linux Oracle 11g

    Hi Team,
I am using Oracle Database Version 11.2.0.1.
We have 6 production servers and all of them are in solaris box. We have a new requirement from application to use Linux boxes and for that we need to perform a database refresh from Solaris to Linux box.
I can do it by Export and Import technique. But I want some other way to perform this database refresh activity.
1] Can I do it while taking a rman backup from solaris box( Source) and restore it back to Linux( Target)?
2] Can I do it using transportable tablespace method?
I am aware of performing this using export-import but as our database size is near of 1TB I can't apply this technique.
I need your suggestions in this activity, please put your opinion on the correct method I should opt for and along with that share me the supporting document where things are mentioned in step by step way.
Please let me know if this can achieved by RMAN...
    Source Machine Make:-
    bash-3.00$ uname -a
    SunOS blrdlvdwhdb01 5.10 Generic_142909-17 sun4v sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-T6320
    Target System Make:-
    Linux blrulvremoradb01 2.6.18-194.el5 #1 SMP Tue Mar 16 21:52:39 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    Regards,
    Arijit

Yes, you can create a backup with rman and restore in other platform, check:
How To Use RMAN CONVERT DATABASE on Source Host for Cross Platform Migration - 413586.1
Cross-Platform Migration on Destination Host Using Rman Convert Database - Note 414878.1
but easier and faster will be with expdp/impdp.

  • Redirect all DNS requests for a certain domain to a specific DNS Server

    Hello,
I have setup a home lab to do some Microsoft training on. My lab domain name is "demo.lab". What I want to do is configure my cisco router to forward any dns requests to demo.lab to my Active Directory Server.
    For example
If I ping mail.demo.lab, I want that reqest to be forwarded to my lab domain controller (dc01.demo.lab).
I have configured a SOA record on the Cisco router like so, but it still does not foward the reqest on (10.10.10.10 is the IP address of dc01.demo.lab).
    ip dns primary demo.lab soa 10.10.10.10 postmaster.demo.lab
Any clues as to what i'm missing?
    Thanks
    Peter

    Hi Karsten,
Yep my computer had the router as its primary DNS Server. The config you supplied worked! Thanks very much :)
    Hi Cisco Freak,
Yep my AD server was also a DNS server. Yes that was one option, but I just didn't want to keep changing my DNS as my laptop goes to/from work with me. The config that Karsten supplied worked though.
    Hi Terry,
Thanks for the link. I believe I had configured it correctly as per that docuemnt, but it didn't work for some reason. Still go reference material though.
    The other option would have been to configure the router to use my AD server as its primary name server host like so;
    ip name-server 10.10.10.10
    ip name-server 8.8.8.8
The only problem would be that if/when my DC is offline, there would be a small delay when doing DNS requests, and since my internet is shared with my house mate, I didn't want to disrupt her too much.
    Thanks again for your help!
    Cheers
    Peter

  • Bind 9 DNS Server chroot cannot work on Solaris 10 u6 and u7

My Old verion "Solaris 10 x86 Generic_Patch_118844-30" can be run "Bind 9 DNS Server" in chroot mode.
And this is no any problem.
I have been try to use "Bind 9 DNS Server" in Solairs 10 x86 u6 or u7.
The result is not any problem.
But when I turn it run in the chroot mode. the "Bind 9 DNS Server" cannot run.
I have been manuelly run the named:-
    /usr/sbin/named -c /etc/named.conf -t /chroot/dns -u named -f -g
    The respond is :-
    13-May-2009 02:17:46.623 starting BIND 9.3.6-P1 -c /etc/named.conf -t /chroot/dns -u named -f -g
    13-May-2009 02:17:46.624 found 1 CPU, using 1 worker thread

13-May-2009 02:17:46.629 exiting (due to early fatal error)
Look like the bind 9 runing in the chroot mode after that cannot find /dev/poll
Even I use Bind 9 version 9.6.0, the result is same.
So, I don't sure the problem are the Bind 9 or Solaris 10 u6/u7
I try to continous install New verion Bind 9 in my old version Solaris 10.
THE Result is NO ANY PROBLEM in old version Solaris 10.
And I already bypass the SMF problem.
Anyone can tell me what the problem in solaris 10 u6/u7?

Looks like something reported similar bug:
    [BIND fails to start|http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do%3Bjsessionid=376e1152f0ddc75829ed1725542e?bug_id=6799867]

Can anyone help? This is currently driving me nuts. I was able to

I am using the Iplanet Webserver 6.0 on a Linux 7.2 platform. Like I

Does anyone know what the source code is trying to do at
    OCIDBAccess.java:1743 ?
    Thanks guys!

Tony, could you please explain me better the procedure that you wrote?
What are the boxes? My situation is similar:
    | ServerSocket (1) |
    | (192.168.1.100, 5555) |
    |
    |
    |
    |
    | Proxy |
    | Someone wants to connect to the ServerSocket (1) |
That is not true. You CAN do it but you need a box
outside the firewall with proper IP address to help
you. I am not sure if Sergio still wants the answer
today after more than a year from the original post (I
did not see the post until today when I try to search
for something else). Anyway, if such a box is
available (I call it 2nd box), you could first
establish a socket between the two boxes by HTTP
tunneling (I assume it is a http proxy). You have to
initiate the socket from the 1st box. Then start
another server socket on the 2nd box, forwarding the
traffic it gets from outside back to the 1st box using
the established channel. That is it.
