Do I need additional hardware to control solenoids?

Currently we have an NI MID 7602 motor drive and a SCB-68 connector block connected to an NI PXI-7334 motion controller. I need to control several solenoid valves. I have never dealt with solenoids before, so do I need additional NI hardware to be able to control these solenoid valves? My professor and I assumed that we could use the digital I/O interface (through the SCB-68) to control the solenoids, but I have a feeling a vital component is required.

And as KC mentioned you will, in most instances, want a diode connected across the each of the DIO driven relay coils. This diode is connected so that it does not conduct when the coil is driven. It is there because the collapsing magnetic field of the coil, when it is de-energized, can induce surpisingly large voltages back into the driving circuit, in the same manner that the spark coil in an automobile ignition system works and the diode effectively shorts this reverse emf.

  • How to use airplay do I need additional hardware

Cant see the airplay icon how do I use this I am trying to conect with Logitech UE Air Speaker and iphone 5 ? ipad air sorry if this is silly question but I've never used airplay before so not sure if I need any this else.

    GIves us more info
    The speakers work over WiFi?
What model Logitech speaker is this? I am not finding this on their website?
What are you trying to use these with? Your Mac or iOS devices or a TV?
Airplay is only for video mirroring and you need a 2011 iMac or better to use Airplay on Mavericks.
Logitech wireless speakers should work without needing an AppleTV.
Contact Logitech to find out what you are doing wrong.

  • How to use labjack U12 to control solenoid directional valve with Labview in hydraulic system

    Hi,
I need to control a solenoid operated direactional valve in hydraulic system with Labjack U12. I am using three relays but need some help on the vi. like which instrument drive I need to use etc....
The coil voltage for the solenoid valve is :  AC120V, 60Hz; AC110V, 50Hz
My goal is to control this solenoid valve open/close at certin time, am using Labview 2011. Any advise would be helpful.
    Thank you!

Have you got the relays working yet.  Do some initial testing with LJlogger to make sure hardware is controlling the relays as expected.  If you need further help with this step, provide a link to electrical details for the relays and describe how you have the relays connected to the U12.
As for your programming in LabVIEW, I suspect you are using digital I/O, so the simplest thing to do is call EDigitalOut() to set a particular line to output-high or output-low, or if you need to set a line to input (for open-collector style control) use a call to EDigitalIn().  Perhaps look at "e function example.vi" to get started, and for general information about using the LabJack U12 with LabVIEW see topic #84 from the LabJack forums.

  • Control solenoid from labview

    Hi all,
I am having a solenoid valve to be controlled from my labview program from a computer.
I already have an interface that is built to switch the solenoid valve on/off.
But I dont have any information on the interface. The interface is provided with a PCI DIO 96 card to communicate with the computer.
The interface has a "ni sc 2054"  (24 VDC) accessory and its connected to a "Grayhill 16 channel rack". I couldn't really understand the interface.
I need to switch the solenoid on/off using the PCI DIO 96 card. Can I do that without the knowledge of what's in the interface? The interface is working with a Windows 98 system but there is no way to view its code or make it work on the system with Windows XP. Does labview provide with this abstraction so that I can use DAQ and operate the solenoid without knowing what it actually does?
Or its ok even if I have to purchase a new hardware to control the solenoid. Any solution which doesn include the interface or with a new setup in the middle is also appreciated.
I have attached a snapshot of the circuit inside the interface, but I dont think if it will be really useful.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Vijay,
Looks like you've got an opto isolation board populated with "output" opto relays. (Those are the red blocks on the Grayhill board)
Your Opto board is connected to a "Breakout" board, and that is connected to your DIO 96 card.
This is a setup we use all the time.  You shouldn't need new hardware to operate your solenoid valve.
I'm not sure from your question if you want to add a new solenoid to your existing hardware, or if you just want to control an existing one.
If you've already got your solenoid wired up, you need to know what channel (line) it's on.  The numbers beside the red blocks on the Grayhill board indicate which line each block is on.
An easy way to test your wiring connection without writing any code is to start Measurement and Automation Explorer.  There should be a link to it from your National Instruments Start menu.
Start that program, and look for something called "Devices and Interfaces" on the left hand side.  Under that menu, you should see some reference to your DIO 96 card.  If you select that, on the top of the right hand pane you should see something called "Test Panels".   When you click on Test Panels you should see something similar to the image below.  (Your's may look different if you're running an older version)
Click the "All Output" button, and then click "Start".  Then move the switch sliders to select On or Off.  Make sure you aren't going to damage anything by turning on the wrong output if you don't know exactly which one your solenoid is connected to.
As you turn outputs on and off, you should see the little red LEDs on your Grayhill board lighting up.  Once you know which Port and which Line your solenoid is on, you can then write LabVIEW code to turn it on and off.
    Good luck.

  • How do I use a T40 as a montor for a T43 without buying additional hardware? Thanks!

I have a T40 and a T43 two laptop. I want to use the T40 as a second monitor for the T43. Is this possible without buying additional hardware? If so how? Thanks
    Thanks

Its called disk mode. You need a firewire cable to connect both computers. Then for your iMac, open System Preferences>Startup Disk. There's a way where you can restart using disk mode. If its grey out, then type your password. Once you do that, then your MacBook Pro will show a disk image on the screen where you can extract files from your iMac to your MacBook Pro.

  • What is the required hardware to control AMC servo amplifier model 30A20AC?

    Hi everybody,
What is the required hardware to control "Advanced Machine Controls" servo amplifier Series 30A-AC, model 30A20AC?
The interface hardware should connect to a laptop, and run in real-time.
    Tnank you

    Hi Nkhbeik,
I went to ni.com/motion >> choose NI Motion Hardware.  I then filtered out the hardware that did not support Real-Time by clicking on Real-Time on the left hand side of the page.  There are a number of results returned.  Depending on how many axis you need, you can filter the results further.  Any of the results can be used with the appropriate connector, either a cRIO chassis (for the 9505), a PXI Chassis (for PXI formfactor), or a PCI Extension device for a PCI card.  I hope this helps!

  • I have a macbook air and need additional storage should i consider a time capsule or a simple external hard drive?

I have a macbook air and need additional storage should i consider a time capsule or a simple external hard drive?

If you move live files (files you don't want to lose) to an external drive, you need to back them up.  Any files not backed up are at risk of loss.  Hard drives and SSDs can fail at any time.  It is hard to backup a Time Capsule so a TC should be used only as a backup device.
Do you have a Time Machine backup now?  If so, and if it is large enough, you can backup your internal and external disk to it using Time Machine.  If not, you all need to purchase an external drive or TC as your backup device.  (I recommend an external hard drive for backup instead of a TC.)  Ideally the backup drive should be twice the size of what you are backing up but 50% larger will work so if you have an external 1 TB disk and an internal 250 GB SSD then a 2 TB backup disk will work well.
By default, Time Machine will not backup the external disk.  You need to remove it from the exclusions list:
To have Time Machine backup your system disk and your external offload disk up onto your Time Machine disk:
 > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.

  • Custom Hardware Fan Control - problem if speed pin not connected?

    Hi There,
I am planing to install a hardware fan control (poti) to my MacPro 1.1 rear fan. (because I have a defective northbridge temperature sensor and the fan is running at maximum speed... so i thought of slowing it down with a fan control for the pci slots)
I read that the pinning of the Fan is: Gnd, 12V, Speed, Control Pin (analog Voltage)
So when i would attach a fan control (just a poti) between some +5v and the Control Pin I think I should be able to control the fan manualy - am i right?
But then the speed signal is not the speed the mac pro fan control software think of... so would it be a problem e.g. if i disconnect the speed pin from the mainboard fan connector?
what would happen then? is the mac pro powering up the other fans for some kind of failsafe?
Or have you other suggestions how I can lower the speed of the rear fan manually?
    thanks in advance,
    Stefan

    2010 2.8 Special $2119 - and throw in 6-core 3.3GHz yourself for $590
Take a look at the project some have undertaken to go with water block.
Send the motherboard in to have a 'skilled' electrician? repair the board perhaps.
4 fans, 3 under the control of SMCFAnControl utility. Maybe disable the one fan and make up for it with your own fan and running the others efficiently.
There are also VGA copper coolers.
FBDIMMs bleed heat: maybe the RAM fan cooler kit in there to deal with large source of heat. New higher density DIMMs are better made and few DIMMs = less heat even if 4GB.
Use ice packs, dry ice and liquid nitrogen to super cool :-)

I want to open a radio file that is .rm.  I get a message that says I need additional Quicktime software, but I cannot locate what I need to download on the QT website.  Anyone got ideas about how I can open this file?

    Hi bert,
the ".rm" extension is created by 'Real Media' application.
The easiest way to use it is to install the 'Real Media' player:
    1. RealPlayer BBC.app
    2. RealPlayer 12.app
I have both installed & use them sometimes.
(The 'BBC' wersion doesn't have any adverts with-in the app.)
