Do I need to get all new hardware to enjoy the benefits of new Airport Extreme 802.11ac protocol?

You will need hardware capable of using 802.11ac, which at present is limited to the new MacBook Air models.

  • I just purchased a new airport extreme 802.11ac I set it up and runs fine when i put my mac to sleep i come back and it can not find my airport i have to restart

I PURCHASED THE NEW AIRPORT EXTREME 802.11AC I SET IT UP AFTER I PUT MY MAC TO SLEEP I COME BACK AND IT SAYS CAN NOT FIND AIRPORT EXTREME I HAVE TO RESTART AND IT FINDS IT.

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • Upgrading to New Airport Extreme 802.11ac

Good day All, today I purchased a new Airport Extreme 802.11ac which I will use to replace my 5th generation Airport Extreme.
I have saved the configuration file from my old Airport Extreme, can I simply import this same configuration file into my new extreme 802.11ac?
    Thanks

    Hey GreyWullf,
Thanks for the question. Yes, you can! Check out the following resource:
    AirPort Utility 6.x: Import settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5081
If you saved a settings file from a base station or an AirPort Time Capsule, or if you were given one by a network administrator, you can import the settings to the base station or the AirPort Time Capsule.
    1. Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. Select the base station you want to set up, then click Edit.
    2. Choose File > Import Configuration File, locate the settings file, then click Open.
    3. Make changes to any of the settings in AirPort Utility.
    4. Click Update to make the new settings active.
To save a settings file, choose File > Export Configuration File.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

  • New (Gigabit) vs. Old (100 Mbit) Airport Extreme  (802.11n)

I sold one of my old Airport Extreme Base Stations (the one that I used to "create the network") and replaced it with a brand new Gigabit AEBSn. These are my "surprisingly" positive results.
    1. "Cloning" the settings was so easy: File - Save a Copy As... in the 'old" AEBSn and File - Import... in the new one. All settings moved with no problem and I was up and running in 2 minutes. Mac OS X asked me to enter the base station password and that was it. I did not have to do anything to my second AEBSn that I use to "extend the network".
    2. The Gigabit AEBSn is much more stable that the old one. With the old one I had to soft reset at least once a day (using Manual Setup - Update) , and had to hard reset (turn AEBSn power off/on) at least once a week. With the Gigabit, I never have to soft reset, and I need a hard reset maybe once a week. Much better.
    3. Speed. I have several Gigabit devices and they of course finally talk to each other at Gigabit speed. But interestingly (and unexpectedly) even browser screen refresh is faster. I do not know by how much, but it is noticeable.
All in all, I'm very happy about the upgrade.

This is what's on the power supply.
    AC 100-240V 56-60 Hz 0.5A OUTPUT 12V --- 1.8A
But don't you think the Airport Express would make a better travel router? After all that's what it's designed for.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11ac loses all settings with each power cycle

Pretty much as the title says, each time the brand new 802.11ac Airport Extreme with firmware 7.7.1 is powered on, I have to re-enter all my network data: SSID, unit name, passwords, static IP.
Other than that, it works fine.  But it's a hassle if the power is disconnected in which case I face the blinking amber light until I reconfigure it.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Unfortunately, the AirPort Extreme is defective, and will need to be replaced.

  • New Airport Extreme (802.11ac) Support for Encrypted USB Disk

The old Time Capsule and Airport Extreme apparently did not support a filevault2 encrypted USB disk for storing files like an NAS (not talking about a time machine backup).  Does anyone know whether the newly released Airport or Time Capsule now supports the encrypted disk?

I do not think that USB encrypted disks are supported...and would be surprised if they were....but will know for sure late tomorrow.
Will update at that time if no one else has answered before that time.
The fact that Apple still has a USB 2.0 port on the new AirPort products might be a clue as well.

  • Change to channel 149 on NEW Airport Extreme 802.11ac on U.K device?

My new Airport Extreme has a very poor range and see that devices sold within the U.S.A have the ability to increase the power of the device by selecting an higher channel on the 5GHz frequency. I'm not suffering interference and my original non branded modem/router supplied by my ISP is outperforming the Airport Extreme. Apple technical support has not diagnosed any problem with the device and believe it is working normally.
Is there anyway of changing the frequency?

What channel is 5ghz working on??
I doubt a higher channel will help.. the extra power output at the higher frequency does not even make up for the lower range.. ie range is better using 36-40 than higher channels even with the power boost.
At least that is my experience .. on Gen4 TC.
AFAIK channel changes are not sticking.. that is a fault in the airport utility.. have you tried from iOS device or using 5.6.1 utility on windows.. which apparently can still access some of the deeper menu items.. although the changes may simply not stick.
US and UK might also have different regs for power output.. I would think it would set output as high as regulations permit..

  • My ps3 won't connect to new airport extreme 802.11ac

My MBP will connect, my roommates laptop connects but neither of our PS3's will connect. Anybody got a solution?

If you still are still being asked for a password and the one you entered is rejected, I would recommend performing a "soft" reset on the AEBSn. This type of reset will temporarily disable all base station passwords for up to five minutes, which should give you plenty of time to access it with the AirPort Utility to change it.

  • Connected a usb HD to the new airport extreme 802.11ac; how can I see the HD on my iPad?

I just purchased and set up the 802.11ac airport extreme. I have connected an usb HD; I can see it from my iMac and my MacAir laptop. Can I see the connected HD from my iPad air 2?

  • I have the airport extreme 802.11ac and I managed to get it working with verizon fios but the upload speed is slow

The 802.11ac router has a fast download speed, but the upload speed is half what it used to be. Am I doing something wrong?
I have the router in brigde mode and I have the fios actiontec Rev I router. I am love the router because it is consistent around my house.

Here is what helped for me. My comcast service stopped connecting. I started by shutting down the modem (sb6121) and the airport extreme ac, taking note of the DNS setting, then after a few minutes connecting.
I had to do it several times, and then, for some reason, the DNS settings changed, and things have been great ever since (knock on wood). I am not one of the experts on the innards of things around here, but my DNS settings got reset automatically, and the problem went away.
If it were to happen again, I would repeat the process, and if it persisted, I would change the DNS settings (network-advanced-dns). I could give you the settings that work for me, but I suspect they are really for those in Oregon. Check out your dns settings, write them down, and do a web search for appropriate dns for you.
Sorry, I don't understand this part of the tech world, but this is what worked for me.

What version of firmware are you running on the 802.11ac?
There is a 7.7.1 update with USB fixes - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1665
After my update to 7.7.1, I still cannot see the Seagate 3TB HDD.
The disk works on a 2nd Gen 802.11n Extreme.

  • HT1386 I want to give me old iphone 4 to my daughter and need to get all her info from her old iphone onto a new computer.  The PC she synced with is dead and she does not want to loose all her contacts and music.

I want to give my old iphone 4 to my daughter and need to get all her info from her old iphone 3 onto a new computer.  The PC she synced with is dead and she does not want to loose all her contacts and music. How can I do this?

To effectively transfer ownership of the iPhone requires that it be "restored" as a new device.
...  The PC she synced with is dead
The iPhone is not a backup device. Your computer backs up the iPhone, not the other way around. What you use to back up your computer is up to you - Macs use Time Machine. I assume PCs use something similar.
If her PC backup is dead you will have difficulty extracting content from the iPhone since it is not designed to work that way.
All her Apple purchases can easily be transferred to another iPhone. However, her contacts will be gone, as will any music or other contact obtained from sources other than Apple.
There are a number of third party utilities that claim to be able to extract content from an iPhone. See wjosten's procedure here:

  • Need to get all the files, well music and video, from my ipod touch 5th gen to my itunes libary.

Need to get all the files, (well music and video), from my ipod touch 5th gen to my itunes libary. (So basically sync the other way to normal)
Laptop hard drive broke so had to buy a new one and obviously now need to sort out my itunes.
Did try downloading all my purchased stuff onto itunes but it has missed some things off, and there are some files I did not purchase from itunes so need a way of getting them back on there.
Sure this question has been asked a million times but can't find anything to help me on here so thought I'd ask.
-Did have a look at going onto the start menu and opening the hidden items thing but couldn't see any reference to ipod or device on it so wasn't sure how to do it that way.
-On itunes under my device when its connected, the section about manually restoring and backing up, would that help me? Because that says it will manually back up my ipod to my computer then could restore that back up, obviously I don't want to accidnetally get rid of everything on my ipod so didn't want to try that just in case without checking.
(And yes I have disabled auto sync to device when conncected!)
Can anyone help me please? Sorry if i've overcomplicated this!
    Thanks:)
    Chris

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

  • HT201317 I need to get all photos off old iphone

I need to get all my off my old iphone. i got a new one today

Save any photo stream photos to the camera roll, then import the camera roll photos to your computer, as explained here so they are backed up: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Then back up your old phone, either to iCloud (if it still has service) or to your computer using iTunes.  Then restore this backup to your new phone to transfer your camera roll photos, text messages, app data, settings, apps and other purchased media, etc.  More details here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2109.
