Do I need to keep downloading?

I plugged my iPad into my MacBook and iTunes asked to download and install iOS 5.0.1. I obviously accepted and updated.
When I plugged my iPhone it is still asking me to download 5.0.1. Why is that, I already downloaded.
This is a pretty big download. Will I have to download it 3 times (for my iPod also)?

Try your update from your iDevice instead of iTunes, it will be a dramatically smaller file.

  • How do I return to iCLoud a playlist of 80 songs that I downloaded from iCloud to my MacBook? I only need the songs downloaded temporarily due to no WiFi. I want to keep the playlist in iCloud; just don't want them downloaded

How do I return (to iCloud from MacBook Pro) a playlist of 80 songs that I downloaded? I only needed the songs downloaded temporarily due to no WiFi. I want to keep the playlist in iCloud; just don't want them downloaded. I know how to delete songs, but is there  a way to just "undo" and return songs to iCloud and maintain existing playlist on MacBook?

Use Flash Media Server to stream the files.......set up a timer and have all three of them play at once....and have a button switch the streams depending upon which stream you want to play.....and wallah......
you can also capture the stream.time from the video playing and resume from that point on the other videos as well....havent done this theoretically so I dont know how smooth the transistion between streams will be....but it can be done....
plus u may have to use double buffering techniques to make sure it starts up right away......

  • OK, Newbie to Mac question.  Do I need to keep files after download/update

Sorry for such a boring newbie question.
(My last Mac was many years ago - the original Macintosh 528k with 2x 3.5" disks. The OS has changed 'a little', and doesn't have to be loaded in every startup!! Wow !!)
I had to go PC for business reasons, but now, I have <control> over my computing needs again. (Photographic business.)
OK. I searched Mac 101 but didn't find an answer.
Apart from Application Icons and/or Folders I have created, I have acquired a bunch of other files on the desktop. Do I need to keep them?
When I download updates, for example, I end up with a .dmg icons showing the HD in the center, with a title such as i1Match3-2.6Pantone.dmg (after updating my calibrator). I know the update is installed (and the app. is in the dock). Same with downloads or updates with Lightzone,, Firefox, etc.
First Question. Can I trash those .dmg icons?
Similarly, I have icons with what looks like an external HD, which I guess is the actual download. For example, RapidWeaver 3.5.1 (no extension), but there is also a .dmg icon. These "HD" icons cannot be dragged into a General Folder on the Desktop.
Second Question. If I can trash the .dmg icond, can I trash the "external HD" look icons once the program is installed. If I can't, where should they be kept ... I don't want them all over the Desktop ??
Third Question. I have some Folders which just materialized over a few days of use.
"Apples Caches" Folder (with arrow=shortcut?) with 10 file icons and 1 folder icon. Another ... "com.apple.kernelcaches" Folder with one 'kernelcache" file icon.
And three empty Folders "Edits", Measurement Data", and "Scan Tiffs". Have no idea why they popped up.
    What to do?
Thank you for reading my questions. I look forward to your proposed solutions.
    iMac 2.33 Intel Core Duo 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM 24" LCD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G Drive 250GB Back Up; Epson V750M Scanner; Epson R2400 Printer; PS CS2 9.0.2; Aperture 1.5.2

    Al:
Thanks for the quick reply ! The .dmg's and the "HD" icons are now GONE. I am curious why they are needed after installions, but I will read up on that to satisfy my curiousity.
    Now, the remaining question ...
The two 'Apple caches' folders appeared on my desktop, just below the Macintosh HD icon, probably about a week or so after I got my Mac. I can't recall doing anything 'bad' or having any 'crash' or freeze-up. I seem to recall having to do a 'force quit' at one stage when I was setting up the scanner and Silverfast6Ai because I initially tried to instal non-Intel software. But on that occasion, everything fired right back up OK and the Mac has been absolutely brilliant ever since. What a wonderful change after XP and IE7 and all the daily drama.
The Folder which has the small black arrow (I guess shortcut) has files for:
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.tecx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache
    com.apple.Components2.SystemCache.QuickTimeComponents
    com.apple.Components2.SystemCache.Components
plus it also contains a Folder:
    com.apple.kernelcaches ... which has
    kernelcache.ED112BB5 as the file.
Does this help you? I don't know if they have to be "put back" somewhere, or they are temporary files which can be trashed.
(As for the other empty folders "Edits" etc, my guess is they somehow arrived during a scan which I cancelled halfway through, or maybe from the Rapidweaver application when I was 'testdriving' the program. I am inclined to trash them anyway. Can't see how that would hurt.)
I reported that the question had been answered, anyway, but I would like MORE of the same !!
    Cheers

I have downloaded it again but still doesn't work. I want Lightroom and it keeps saying I need this to download it.

1.If internet is fine then this might be becase of Creative cloud files, please try the steps metioned in http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/unknown-server-error-launchin g-cc.html and see if it works.
2.Please navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/opm.db and trash it. Try to launch CC desktop and sign in with your Adobe Id (http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-f iles.html) .
{Note for step 2: The file is in the user Library, not the Applications folder. To see the hidden user Library (not the system Library) in the Finder click on the Gomenu item and then hold down the Alt / Option key. You will see Library appear between Home and Computer. Click onLibrary and then navigate toApplication Support > Adobe > OOBE.
Alternatively open the Terminal and paste in the following and then press the Enter / Return key:
    rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/OOBE/opm.db, This will also delete the file}

  • Need to keep CS5 download?

I have the CS6 design premium installer...is there any need whatsoever for me to hang onto the CS 5 installer? My goal is to free up the 5 GB if I don't need to keep it for any reason, such as for upgrading; CS6 installs readily from its own installer, of course...
    thank you!
    w

No, Actually, I'm flush with drive space, thanks to some recent "housekeeping" I've done...liberated more gigs that I'm comfortable saying, mainly cuz I got lazy about it.
I'm happy to make 5gb available for something like this..
    thank you again!

  • Software Update server keeps downloading updates when set not to

When I first setup our server (10.5.x) for software update, I looked over the option to to uncheck the box for automatically downloading updates from Apple. Since then, it has downloaded pretty much everything. I've unchecked that option and also selected it to delete old updates. It keeps downloading updates and won't delete older updates. We've since upgraded to 10.6.2. Same thing. I've even manually deleted ALL of the updates only to watch them all come back. Any clues?

Welcome to the wonderful world that is the Software Update Service
I have the same problem and have yet to find a sensible answer to this problem. I have three Macs at home and only need a small proportion of the updates that Apple supply yet no matter what I do, I can't seem to stop SUS downloading everything even though I don't want it and have told it not to download.
Best of luck getting any sense out of Apple on this. I'm going to try a home made solution to get round this problem.

  • I have updated to Mountain Lion but both Mountain Lion and Lion are showing up in my App store as needing to be downloaded? Help

I have updated my mac pro to Mountain Lion, but when I go into my updates in App store it shows both Lion and Mountain lion needing to be updated. They are not coming with a cancel option and when I download Mountain Lion it tries to download for a very long time, but then shows and error and shows up again as needing to be downloaded. Lion is now on pause to keep from downloading it. What do I do to get rid of both of them.

Hi again, when you clicked on Mountain Lion and Lion in the App Store you are telling the laptop to reinstall them both.
You may have allowed simutanious downloads checked at the bottom of the window, I don't know, but I expect Mountain Lion is downloading, so Lion is waiting for it to finish, so if you have Mountain Lion installed cancel both download's.
    Cancell both downloads anyway.
Go to the apple logo , top left, click on it, then click on about this mac, a window will open telling you what's installed,  Mountain Lion is OX 10 version 10.8.2 click on more info, to find out more, Lion will be OX10 version 10.7.4.
Only update were it say's check for updates, not download now.

  • Do my itunes purchases keep downloading even when I'm not signed into itunes?

I don't have enough time for my purchases to download completely, and I need to sign out of my itunes account, and I was just wondering, if I sign out without pausing my downloads, will they keep downloading? Because this is what I'm actually hoping for. It would be great if they could keep downloading even when I'm not signed in. I just don't know if they do or not.

    Hi junebeez,
Have you gone into Settings and turned off the Sync Courses and Notes option? If not, try doing this:
Go to Settings>iTunes U>Sync Courses and Notes, and see if it is = On. If it is, turn it Off and see if that fixes the problem.
    Hope this helps!

  • HT4859 If all devices are backed up on iCloud, do I still need to keep the files on my computer?

If all devices are backed up on iCloud, do I still need to keep it on my computer? It takes up a lot of space.

"iCloud Backup" is a little misleading.
Apple says you get "unlimited free storage for music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books" but then goes on to say "previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore". Therefore what you purchased is really not "backed up". Your "backup" is no more than your ability to download your purchases again, and that is nothing new. The content remains where it originated - on iTunes, if it's still available.
Apple could easily change its mind and remove it, change it, or simply make it unavailable.
Photos and videos in your camera roll are backed up, but photos and music that originated on your computer's iPhoto and iTunes Libraries are not.
Your free 5 GB of iCloud storage is also used for iWork documents stored in iCloud, app data, all of which is lumped in with "Storage and Backup".
Same thing for iTunes Match I'm afraid... iTunes Match does not back up your content and is therefore not a backup strategy. It finds a "match" in its vast library and permits you to access it. There have been a lot of complaints from purists who found their mono Beatles tracks were "matched" with stereo equivalents, "explicit" tracks matched with clean, etc.
Contrast this with a traditional backup associated with iTunes syncing. In that case everything really is backed up to your computer - apps, purchases, music, videos, everything.
The bottom line is that iCloud is no substitute for one's own iTunes backup, and a backup / clone of the device containing it.

  • HT4539 Do i need to keep copies of iOS apps in iTunes (on my computer)?

I have a Macbook Air, and would like to free up some space. I noticed there are copies of all my apps (and family's apps) in my iTunes library, and found the setting that was marked for automatic downloads of apps purchases from another device. Can I safely delete these iOS apps from my computer to free up space without affecting my ability to use/update/download them on inidvidual devices? Thanks!

Generally speaking yes you do not need to keep local copies of the installer files, as you can re-download purchased content from the iTunes or App stores anyway (an exception is audiobooks, which are not available for re-download).
There is one reason to keep apps or some apps around though.  If the developer pulls a particular version of an app and replaces it with another version, the only version available for re-download will be the current one, regardless of which version you originally purchased or want on your device.
So for older devices, like an iPad 1, this may be important.  An iPad 1 cannot be updated beyond iOS 5.1.1 and many apps in the stores have been updated and now require iOS 5, 6 or 7.  In that situation, an iPad 1's owner may have only their own saved copies of compatible apps for re-installation if necessary.
Or, as the case with QuickOffice Pro, which was recently purchased by Google.  Google has removed many useful features in their modified version of QuickOffice, and if someone wants to continue to use the older, pre-Google version, then they need to keep the installer saved locally as it is no longer available.
So there are a few circumstances where you may want to keep some app's installers saved locally for yourself.

  • I have had LR since LR3.  I bought the original program and have done updates ever since.  Do I need to keep the previous versions of LR for my LR5 to work?

Hope I can get some insight!

Just to be a little more specific, you do not need to keep LR3 installed on your computer, but the terms of your license with Adobe require you to not transfer LR3 to another person if you have upgraded to LR5; if you think of it that way, you should "keep" LR3 in that sense. The license terms allow you to have Lightroom (any version numbers) installed on any two devices (which could mean a Mac computer and a Windows PC, or a laptop or desktop, or any combination along those lines). If someone else were to attempt to register the same LR3 key you're supposed to still have to run your LR5 upgrade, either you or the other person could get blocked in that attempt.
Before upgrading, it's always a good idea to download and try out LR5 to make sure it runs well on the computer you want to use it on--some devices that can run LR3 well can't run a later version well, and if that applies to your hardware, it's best to figure it out before you've paid for LR5.

  • If my photos from my iphone are on icloud, do i need to keep them on my phone?

I can't download OS7 because I don't have enough storage on my phone. If my photos from my iphone on on icloud - do I need to keep them on my phone?

You can delete any tracks you do not wish to have on the iPad and redownload them at any time. There is a setting you should be aware of, as well as a quirk (lets say design flaw):
Settings app >  Music > Show all Music. This either exposes (if tuen on) or hides (if turned off) the un-downloaded tracks in Match. I have around 17,000 tracks in Match and find it useful to turn this off to facility easily locating albums already on teh device.
If you choose to stream a track rather than downloading first, it will actually download teh track. Once this occurs, you cannot delete it by swiping. teh only way to remove it is to delete all tracks from the device via Settings app > General > Usage > Music. A bit of a pain and my only real complaint with iTunes Match.
