Do new internal HDs show up as separate?

Despite trying to wait for a new tower DESIGN, I need to bite the bullet and purchase a new tower. I intend on adding two of the WD 1tb drives (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD1001FALS/). When I do so, will all three drives (including the standard 320 BG apple provides) show up as separate drives in the same way that my external drives on my current system do? I was sort of hoping that they would somehow string together as my single HD. Am I nuts? Is there no reason to do this? I was hoping to do it in order to make my SuperSuper backups easier, time machine backups easier etc. I just want to backup one stinking drive, deal with one virtual drive, instead of all three. Possible?
Also, I have been told to basically leave my system drive alone and put data and work on all of the other ones. When people do that, do you just leave your system "movies" and pictures" "music" etc. folders alone and just create your own folders on those other drives? So I will have like 300gb of drive doing nothing? I am a pro photog and have lots of video, so currently I have dedicated external HDs for each. What do people put on their system HD and keep good performance?
sorry for all the long windedness.

I don't think the OEM drive is all that great and would put it in OWC Mercury Quad-interface SATA/FW case for your emergency boot drive and backup system to do repairs with Disk Utility and other such utilities.
Not sure who would say to leave as is.
The Apple Pro RAID $799 lets you use RAID5 and see it all as one volume, or you could stripe it all together.
Time Machine backups every volume, unless you tell it not to (and you want to exclude some scratch or editing volumes and folders).
It depends on what you do and hope to gain and such as to what will work best for your setup and storage needs, but I would guess you want massive storage. And for every volume, I prefer to have at least two backup sets, even two TimeMachine in case one fails or something happens, as is usually not if, but when.
The boot drive is doing more than just sitting there, it is busy, and it is to free it up so it isn't do double duty to move things to another drive. And a system only drive is easier to maintain; most problems with directory and such show up and happen to system drives, rather than media.
Also, the outer 1/3 of a drive is where it has the best performance and then drops in half and also adds latency and longer seeks, and falls off at 50%.
I recommend keeping one of those SuperDuper images of just the system, and backup system image before any updates.
A great 300GB "do nothing" would be the WD VelociRaptor ($297) or Caviar 640GB ($83). Both are exceptionally fast (and yes, I use half the 640 for system, and the rest is an archive backup of odds and ends, downloads, updates, but static files not accessed.
I keep a small home account, with all my media, music, video and photos in my real home account on 2nd drive. Depends on how much you have.
Phtotoshop 'hits' the boot drive and you want to designate a 2nd drive or partition just for scratch (or stripped array). http://www.adobe.com/go/kb401089
http://homepage.mac.com/boots911/.Public/PhotoshopAccelerationBasics2.4W.pdf
Between SuperDuper, Disk Warrior and some other tools, I keep drives in shape, scan for bad media sectors if needed.
http://www.barefeats.com/hard103.html VelociRaptor
http://www.barefeats.com/harper14.html Caviar 640 (110MB/sec)
So yes, unless you mirror (not great idea) or stripe (redundant backups are a must) each drive will show as separate volume. If your work depends on improving disk performance, you could create one stripped volume.
If you are use to using FireWire, you might want to consider an SATA controller setup for larger and more drive support and performance.

  • Could not see my photos after Installing new internal drive

Aaarrgghhh! I installed a new internal drive to keep data separate from applications, transferred all the data to the new drive and now all the work I did in sorting thousands of photos has gone, same with iTunes. Does anytone know how to restore my categories of photos and tunes?
    thanks

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff: What version of iPhoto. What version of the Operating System. Details. What were you doing when the problem arose? Did it ever work properly? Step-by-step descriptions of how you got to this issue. If something doesn't work, are there error messages? What happens when you try to do this thing? And what steps have you tried already to solve the issue. With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that a helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • How many internal HDs can I add to my G4 AGP tower?

    Hi all,
How many internal HDs can I add into my G4 tower? I want to buy and use a SATA controller PCI card to break the 137 mb barrier and add 3 or more hds for my graphics art files, video and music files. Sort like a server right?
    Thanks
    web dude

    Hi, Web dude -
What do you mean by this? They have power packs plugged to them and they're plugged in a strip?
    Yes.
The firewire bus is designed to be able to provide power for use by an attached device, in addition to providing a data pathway. There is a limit as to how much power can be provided by that bus. Such power is used by the device to operate its mechanics - in the case of a firewire hard drive, to run the motor that spins the platter(s) in the drive.
Many, if not most, firewire devices can also be powered by using a separate power supply, often an external transformer although some may have that transformer built in. This necessitates a separate connection to line power, typically to an outlet on a power strip or surge suppressor strip.
When I ordered each of my firewire drives, I also ordered the optional power supply for it. This makes each drive non-dependent on the Mac for operating power.
How should I prevent over heating my G4?
As far as keeping a Mac from overheating, the primary defense is to keep it clean inside. Dust is both an insulator and a restrictor of airflow. Using canned air regularly to blow dust out of the inside of the Mac, and to clean its fans, goes a long way to keeping it from overheating. Using a vacuum cleaner is not recommended - it's too easy for the nozzle to bang into something, and the airflow going into a plastic nozzle can create static electricity, which you do not want around any printed circuit board.
Keep the machine itself adequately ventilated - it needs a reasonably unrestricted supply of fresh air. If you place the tower on the floor or under a desk, make sure there are several inches of free space between the case and any obstructions. Usually, keeping it on a desktop reduces the amout of dust it will ingest.
In addition, whenever possible use external power for a device - this applies to firewire and USB devices.
Hard drives generate a fair amount of heat. G4 desktop models are designed to accommodate up to four internal hard drives, though it is possible to install more than that. If you go beyond four internal drives in a G4, consider replacing the fans with ones with a larger capacity to handle the increased heat load.
If you replace the CPU, be sure you follow the instructions with the new one re making sure the heat sink on the new processor is installed correctly.

  • New internal order type--need help

    Dear all:
i have a case need help.
now i want to create a new internal order type ,and assign a new number range and a default settlement rule to it .
the settlement rule is that the actual costs of this  internal order type need to be
sent to a cost element .
what should i do step by step?
    thanks!
    best regards!

    Hi,
    2. Order Master Data
    2.1 Define Order types (KOT2_OPA)
IMG Controlling  Internal Orders Order Master Data  Define Order Types
An Internal order is created under an Order type. An order type is used for storing various control parameters and various defaults while creating an internal order. It is used for classifying various types of internal orders according to usage for e.g. Real orders for trade fairs, real orders for Capital investment measure, Statistical orders for motor vehicle expenses.
The order type is client-specific, which means that every order type can be used in all controlling areas. A number range is assigned to the internal order type.
    Click on “New Entries”
Take a drop in the field Order category and select 01
    Enter
    Update the following
    Give Order Type :- Z810
Description :- Traders First Real order type
    Object Class :- OCOST overhead
Reference Order :- Collective order without automatic goods movement
    Residence time 1 :- 12 months
    Residence time 2 :- 1 month
Check “Commit Management and Check Integrated Planning
Activate CO Partner Updating -You activate this so that allocations between orders and other CO objects (cost centers, projects, etc.), the partner information is retained and whether for each order a totals record should be written.
    Save
    Click on “Field Selection”
Here you can hide the various fields or make it as required entry or only display or available for input. Thus while creating internal order only those fields are displayed and available for input.
    Click Save
2.2 Maintain Number Ranges for Orders (KONK)
IMG Controlling  Internal Orders  Order Master Data Maintain Number Ranges for Orders
Number Range needs to be assigned to the internal order type. Number range can be internal or external. In Internal numbering system automatically assigns a number from the given number range. In external numbering the user has to manually assign the number from the given number range.
We will configure internal number range for our internal order type – Trade Fair
Click on Group Maintain (From the menu bar)
Click on Group  Insert (From the menu bar)
    Update the following
    From Number: - 910000000000
    To Number: - 919999999999
Click in “plus icon” at the left bottom of the screen
    Click Save
You will find internal order type Z810 in not assigned
You need to assign the order type to the group we created above. Proceed as follows:-
Position the cursor on: - Z810 Trade Fair real order type
Click on “Arrow”   Z810 Trade Fair real order type note it turns blue
Select Check mark Z810 A ltd India fair real order
    Click “Element Group”
The internal order type Z910 moves under the group which can be seen as follows:-
Z810: A Ltd India Trade fair real order / Z810 Trader Fair real order type.
    Click Save
Select: - Z810: A Ltd India Trade fair real order / Z810 Trader Fair real order type.
    Click on “Pencil” icon.
    Click Back arrow.
    2.3 Define Model Orders
    IMG Controlling Internal Orders Order Master Data Screen Layout
    Define Model Orders
Model orders are not orders in the commercial sense, but serve merely as references for creating "normal" orders. Model orders contain default values for the orders in an order type. The Model order is assigned as the reference order in the order type.
When you create a new order, all the fields active in the relevant order type are copied from the model order to the new order.
    Example
You want to settle all your marketing orders to the same sales cost center. Stipulate the cost center as the default value in the model order for marketing orders.
When you create a new marketing order, the system defaults this cost center. If you want to settle the order to a different cost center, you can overwrite the default cost center in the orders.
We will create a model order with some defaults and assign it to the Trade fair internal order type
    Click “Create CO Model Order”
Press F4 and select ($$) 03 model order
Click on the master data and update the following
    Order: - $$$ Z81000001
Description text: - A Limited Trade affair
    Click Save
Assign this model order to the order type Z810
Update the reference order with the model order number $$$Z81000001 in the reference order field
    Click on save.

  • PowerMac G4 (AGP) suddenly won't boot from its internal HDs

Hi, here's a description of a weird and sudden issue on my mac. Hope one of you out there has a cure.
The system: Powermac G4 (AGP) 450MHz, 512MB RAM, upgraded a couple of years ago with an 133 ATA controller card (Acard 6280M). The card controls my two internal HDs of 160GB, which are from two separate brands. Until 1 week ago I regularly booted from one HD with OS10.4.6 (let's call it hd_A), while used the other HD as a data backup space (hd_B).
    The problem:
-1 week ago I upgraded hd_A to OS10.4.7 using the incremental package. The system restarted once without problems, but from the second time, all attempts failed. The startup screen showed the flashing question mark: a boot system could not be found.
-I thus booted from the install DVD (10.4) and installed OS10.4.0 into hd_B. The system was then able to boot from hd_B only on the first attempt. From the second, again flashing question mark. Note that on that single successful boot, I verified that hd_A was readable and apparently intact, plus ran DiskUtil which reported no problems on either HDs.
-Running DU from the Install DVD reports no problem on either HDs.
-Running Startup Disk from the Install DVD correctly reports bootable systems 10.4.7 on hd_A and 10.4.0 on hd_B, but attempting a restart from either of them leads to the flashing question mark.
    -Resetting PRAM didn't help.
-Holding option during startup brings up the boot volume selection screen with the options of the Tiger install DVD or the 10.4.0 system on hd_B (note that 10.4.7 on hd_A is not shown). Selecting 10.4.0 on hd_B leads, after a delay of a few seconds with a blank screen to a sudden autonomous shutdown of the computer!
    Other data:
-The battery reads 3.7V on a voltmeter, so it must be ok.
-Curiously, System Profiler run from the install dvd reports the two internal HDs as 'removable media'. Can's say how it reported them previous to the entire issue.
    Thanks, Lo

You can't use the iBook installer on another model Mac. You need a retail version of Panther 10.3 or Tiger 10.4.
If you do a Google search for M9227LL/A (Panther 10.3 retail install CDs) or M9228LL/A (Family Pack), you may find a set. The CDs should be black with a white X.
After you install the base 10.3.x, update to the final Panther version 10.3.9. See Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2464
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

  • Songs in my Itunes show up as separate folders.  How do I combine them into one album?

Songs in my Itunes show up as separate folders.  How do I combine them into one album?

Is this one of those CDs where the main artist asks their friend to sing a song with them?
Such as, Slash's new album. Track 1 is "Slash Feat. Ian Astbury", track 2 is "Slash Feat. Ozzy Osbourne" and so on.
To fix this, select all the tracks on that album, right-click > Get Info, and say YES to changing multiple items.
Put "Slash" in the *Album Artist* field (for this example, of course).
Make sure it is the *Album Artist* field, not the plain Artist field.

  • New HDD not showing in disk utility

    Help please!
i can up on a broken G5 i have replaced the HDD. now i am trying to install tiger. but the new internal HDD is not showing up in disk utility.
i plugged my passport in and it popped right up.
some one please let me know what you think.

Well, having a had hard drive connected may cause a grey screen (if the system cannot successfully perform a check of connected devices). Not sure about the fan.
If you have not done so yet, be sure to try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, you can also try resetting the SMU (power management).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
    Follow the procedure precisely.
It is also possible that the old drive was not bad and your iMac has some other problem. Did you ever test the previous drive on another Mac (or connected externally) to confirm it was faulty? That +other problem+ may be what you are experiencing now.
Also, I asked this previously but, are you able to start up the iMac using the optical drive, with a Mac OS X installation disc in there?

  • Upgrade system or install new internal HD first

Hello all and thanks in advance.
I am currently on a mid 2007 imac (imac7,1) with 10.5.8 instaled and running.  This computer so far has been nothing but great.  So much so I dont know some things which must be basics for many of you.
Recently however, I started seeing some lag and hang-ups while performing regular tasks with safari or even finder.  FYI-I typically dont rock more than 2 programs due to my limited ram as specd below, and if I am running Lightroom I make sure its the only one.  I've been concerned with how old my OS is and lack of updates being released so I just got a snow leopard disk witch I will soon install.  I also got a new external hd for backing up a photo library which is also on an existing external.  While waiting for snow leopard and my new external hd in the mail, ive discovered running the system profiler shows many many many "open error 5: "input/output...." lines.  A helpful search here leads me to believe my internal hd may soon suffer from immenent failure.
I was planning on simply updating my system from leopard to snow leopard...I have several programs of which I no longer have the disk for - I wasnt previosly considering a clean install.
So my question is should I
A - simply install snow leopard and make a bootable clone on the new exteranl drive I was hoping to use for photo storage untill I can replace the external?
B - Make a bootable clone  to my new external first then updatemy OS and do a new bootable clone?
C - Make a bootable clone, replace my internal hd, then upgrade OS
D - Make a bootable clone and update that (is that even possible) and live with it
D - Something I am not thinking off?
My head is spining and I see so many ways I can mess up that which many of you must see as simple!  Ive been so fortunate that this stuff has never failed so all of the above options no matter what i choose will be a first.
FYI the new external is a my book studio with firewire 800.

Woops, I forgot to mention everything is being backed up on an external via time machine.  I wasnt clear enough.
    Here is my hd breakdown:
1 - Existing ineterna hd which is failing I think
2 - Existing OWC portable used for time Machine backups.
3 - Existing WD my book studio External drive used for photo library.  This is lightrooms library and I work directly off of it.  photos are backed up onto my existing internal hd.
4 - New WD my book studio with nothing on it yet (was going to use it for photos and free up internal hd, but now rethinking that)
Yah, my machine is pretty old.  I will take a look at the OWC 6gb upgrade to stay informed but like you pointed out, dont know how much its worth to invest in something so old.  Short of bying some externals, I have no hardware money put into this computer.  Thats why im not too worried about putting in a new internal if it comes down to that.  Im a little familiar with the upgrade path to ML and understand my particular computers issues with going that route.  I think for the short future, I'd simpy like to get onto snow leopard.
So still, im wondering, how should I proceed with this new external, upgrading my system, and replacing my internal hd?
    Thanks

  • New internal hard drive replacement not seen - why?

I have replaced the internal Seagate Momentus 7200RPM, 160Gb drive on my 2007, 17 inch MBP- with a Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 500 GB.  I used Super Duper to clone the original drive - and the new drive will boot up OK - BUT only when in an external enclosure!  Not as the new internal drive.
I am using Mountain Lion 10.8.2
When it is in place in the MBP at start up I get the flashing Question mark.  I have tried booting from another backup drive - to use Disk Utility to repair the new drive.  but it does not show up!  I have also tried booting from OS Mountain Lion on a flash drive - but, again I cannot 'see' the new Seagate internal drive to repair it!
I have checked all the connections (taken the new drive out and put it back in several times) all connections appear to be Ok.
I have tried resetting PRAM - no difference.
So, why does it only work when connected as an external drive - and does not show up when connected as an internal drive?
    PLEASE - can anyone help?
    thanks
    Alan

Hi again  - thanks!  I recall the cable snaking around and it certainly does look as in your pic.
As I put in my first post - I do have an enclosure and it does work from that.  However, it is only via USB 2 so is slow.  As I write I have booted up from my Firewire 800 backup drive.
I will explore bot iFixit and Powerbook medic and see if they can send these parts to me - so thanks to you both for all this helpful advice!
One final question - since it WAS working when I first took out the original drive it may be that I have EITHER pulled too hard and broken a connector - or just pulled one loose
Is ther any way I can test?  How are the other ends connected?  The large block of double connectors to the drive is clear - but I have not tried specifically to remove any other ends!

  • Macbook cannot detect new internal HDD

    hi there,
first of all, please excuse my terrible (german) school english. i hope you understand my problem.
last week i´ve bought a new internal western digital 250 gb hdd (the scorpio model). if i install the hdd in my macbook it could not be detected by the leopard installation dvd. the disk utility shows only my dvd-drive.
if i install the wd hdd in an external usb case i could format it. but even then, the macbook doesn´t detect it (after reinstall it internal).
if i connect the wd hdd via usb and copy the files from the old drive via carbon copy cloner onto it, i could boot from the usb port without any problems.
do you have any idea what´s the problem here?
    thx

    Hi ZeeO,
Dein Englisch ist sehr gut! I don't now exactly why your hard drive isn't detected. I recently installed a 500GB Western Digital HD in my MacBook and everything went fine. You can check out my blog and see what I did and perhaps you can figure out what you did differently or wrong.

  • My new video card shows me a small grey artifact at the bottom edge of the white screen at startup.

2 months ago I needed a new internal hard drive and a new video card.  For the past months my white start-up screen shows me a small grey artifact that looks somewhat like a floppy disk.  There are other small odd shaped artifacts around the lower corners of the start-up screen.  Should I return my computer to the Apple repair/dealer to replace the video card?

  • Getting a New Internal battery

    Hi,
I have a G4 Powerbook and I need a new internal battery as my clocks keeps going off time and telling me my programs will act "eradically". Where do I get the internal battery for the clock? Can I put it in myself? Computer is not under Apple Care.
    Thanks!

Hi, HD shooter. The internal backup battery is an assembly including a small circuit board and cable, not just a single coin-type cell. There's a significant amount of time/labor involved in getting to it and, if you're a professional technician expected to warrant your work, testing after the installation to make sure things are working OK.
That said, it's perfectly possible to replace the battery assembly yourself and save some money. You can see what it looks like and where it is on this page, which shows the underside of the Powerbook with its battery, hard drive and optical drive removed. Click on any of the three photos to enlarge it. The backup battery assembly is the small circuit board in the upper right corner with the pink and white cable draped across it. It resides above the optical drive, under the right wrist rest, and is accessed by removing the optical drive.
Check with the following parts vendors for pricing and availability of the backup battery assembly for the DVI Tibooks, of which yours is the last and fastest model:

  • XServe G5 - Need to replace all three internal HDs - Hitachi Ultrastar OK?

XServe G5 DP 2.3 GHz PowerPC OS 10.4.11
I want to replace all three internal HDs, currently Hitachi HDS725050KLA360, with new Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000 drives.
Anyone know if they would could should work?
Am I really limited to 500GB per drive?
    Thanks.

There are several threads about drives which are known to work in the G5 Xserves but you'll have to search to see if those specific drives have been tested and reported by anyone. The G5 is pretty liberal about what it will accept although some people report having to jumper the speeds down because they shipped with an early version of the SATA spec and some newer faster ones have issues. The only drives I can personally vouch for are the Seagate Constellation ES 7200RPM SATA 2.0 drives. I put in a several 500GB and the worked immediately, I created RAID 1s and they've been humming along since then.
You're not limited to 500GB although I'm pretty sure you're limited to 2GB and maybe there are further limits on the 10.4 version of the OS. (I don't think so but it's been a long time so I can't be certain.) I only chose the 500GB because it was big enough (replacing 80GB drives) and I had to buy many so I went for the cost savings over the larger drives.
If you're really set on those drives and no one's reported on them you might consider getting one and testing it out before you commit to buying all of them. Otherwise opt for one of the reported known good drives and move on.
Good luck and report back with your results,
    =Tod
