Do you handle illegal characters in form entry?

Hi everyone
I have an application with lot's of forms. The users are entering single and double quotes causing database errors. I would like to treat the single and double quote problem.
My questions are
1. How do you guys treat the single and double quote problem ?
2. are there any other characters that will cause java to break between form submission and database insert
Stephen

Hi Everyone thanks for the response.
I'm familiar with the preparedstatement solution -- however the problem is that sometimes i need to build dynamic insert statements. If i could insert nulls in the prepared statement i would be finished. so i tried that solution by liberticide i wasn't able to get it to work .
I tried to test it in a jsp page
I had the following errors:
empty character literal
probably occurred due to an error in /test/ReplaceQuotes.jsp line 13:
case ''': strB.append("\'");
empty character literal
probably occurred due to an error in /test/ReplaceQuotes.jsp line 13:
case ''': strB.append("\'");
unclosed character literal
probably occurred due to an error in /test/ReplaceQuotes.jsp line 13:
case ''': strB.append("\'");
: expected
probably occurred due to an error in /test/ReplaceQuotes.jsp line 13:
case ''': strB.append("\'");
Here is all the Code Below
<%@ page import "java.io.*, java.text.*, java.util.*" %>
<%@ page errorpage="JuvErrorPage.jsp"%>
<%! public String getBR(String mystring) {
StringBuffer strB = new StringBuffer();
int len = mystring.length();
char ch;
// start scan throught the string
for(int i=0; i <len; i++ )
ch = mystring.charAt(i);
switch(ch) {
case ''': strB.append("\'");
case '"': strB.append("\"");
default: strB.append(ch);
return strB.toString();
%>
any ideas ? ?

  • How to handle weird characters in form fields (like bullet points from Word docs)

    hi there
    lots of my users copy and paste from MS Word documents into a
    text area
    my app takes that form.textarea data and inserts it in a
    MYSQL db.
    when we output that cell from the db, we often find there are
    ? [question marks] where there once were special characters in the
    Word doc text.
    it seems that bullet points in word docs are the worst
    offenders.
    each time i spot a new one i try to find out the chr() number
    for it and make a substitiution before the text is stored in the
    db, but its a bit hit and miss (relies on me spotting it) and its v
    time consuming
    ive tried using functions safetext and demoronize - but they
    dont seem to do what i need
    im sure im not the first person to run into this - any
    suggestions anyone?
    thanks very much indeed for any help you can give.
    kind regards

    Thanks Paul and Azadi
    Paul - when you say "change it to unicode" do you mean the
    page or a setting in the db? forgive me if i'm being stupid but
    this is all new territory to me. Thank you ever so much for your
    help - does sound logical what you say :)
    Azadi - thanks very much for this (I'm pressuming that
    there's a charge for this udf) so i'll try to implement Paul's
    solution and if I can't do that I'll buy the the udf - thanks very
    much indeed for your help, really is much apprecaited.

  • Handling illegal characters in file and folder names

    Due to the cross-platform nature of our DAM, some characters which are valid on OSX are not valid on our DAM, like :*?\"<>|;#. So I want to prevent that users using our Drive connector create files or folders containing these characters.
    Is it possible to present the user an appropriate error message in this case? In other words, what Exception should be thrown? I've tried a general RemoteHandlerException, this results in a login dialog in OSX Finder, not just an error that the file/folder cannot be created.

  • Cannot insert Captivate Demo - filename contains illegal characters

    RoboHelp HTML v8 on XPpro. Captivate v4.
    I have created a simple Captivate v4 application demo and published to SWF.
    In my RHhtmlv8 project, I create a new topic, and choose Insert > Adobe Captivate Demo.
    The Insert dialog allows me to select my SWF file. It shows it in the Insert dialog and starts to play it.
    No matter what my SWF filename is (e.g. abc.swf, video1.swf, etc.), when I click the OK button in the Insert dialog, I get the error:
    'Unable to rename file, "abc.swf". The filename contains illegal characters.'
    I have searched the forums here and find no solution.
    How do you get support from this company? I went to the support link and it only showed Captivate as an option, even though I have a valid license for RH8 and have registered it. Yet - for 2 days now, I have not heard back from any support via that mechanism.
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff
    When you attempt to insert the demo, by chance do you still have the project open in the Captivate editor? If so, you likely need to close it there before attempting to insert into RoboHelp. I've seen all manner of weirdness with this.
    Another thing that seems to have happened recently that is worth looking at. When you Published your Captivate demo, did you Publish as AS2 or AS3? (For those that may wonder, AS refers to ActionScript. Similar to JavaScript and is the Flash programming language.)
    I've begun to notice issues with inserting Captivate content where I have published as AS3.

  • Illegal Characters Newly found in RH8 Project

    Hello,
    I need some help. I opened my RH7 project in RH8 for the first time, and received error messages complaining of file names having illegal characters and I am unable to import ANYTHING (Master pages, images, HTML files, etc.) because the items have illegal characters.
    Let me say that I've never had problems like this using RH7, in fact, I believe I initially created the project using RH6. In any case, I read a similar thread on this forum and decided that perhaps my Project Title and Project Name are invalid, since they both have apostrophes ("XX YY User's Guide"). So, I renamed them (using RH8, of course) to "XX YY User Guide" and now, things are VERY SCREWED UP. I've attached the dialog box that I now receive, it's cycling through every single topic in my project (~50 topics), and I'm getting tired of clicking OK.
    Is there any quick fix for this problem, or do I need to just start anew?
    Using: RH8, Windows XP.
    Images/Topics/Master Pages: Names have underscores, but I believe those are legal; never had an issue before migrating to RH8. No spaces or other illegal characters.
    Thank you...any help would be appreciated. I've never come across this problem before, even with the apostrophes in the Project Title/Name.

    Hi there
    In addition to what my esteemed colleague Peter offered, I'll add this.
    The image shows that you have an apostrophe present. Perhaps try renaming things so the apostrophe isn't present?
    Cheers... Rick

    Not sure if there is ?
    You have to ensure no illegal characters exists in the SOAP request (Rather than looking for a work around) ; )

  • Handling special characters in XML

    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 10g 'XMLType' datatype to store XML files. Before storing I parse the XML document using Java Xerces Parser. If it parses successfuly, then I perform some business rule execution based on XML file which was parsed. So till this stage there is no problems. But when XML file contains some special characters like copy-paste of some description from MS-Word document into XML tags, then Xerces parser will parse such characters with out any exceptions, but while inserting XML document, Oracle database just throws exception saying unable to handle special characters.. So how to avoid such exceptions or silent such exceptions with any specific settings respect to XMLType datatype in 10g DB.
    Please advice!
    Arvind Patil - IN

    Monica--
    In XI 2.0, we've noticed a number of issues processing special characters, primarily caused by the version of JCO that we're running.  It sounds like SAP has spent some time in the past few months focusing on these errors, so make sure you're on the most recent patchlevels of all your middleware components, including any of the middleware libraries that BC uses. In XI, we had to update the 3 files that make up the RFC library and JCO library.  SDM couldn't update the libraries for us -- we had to manually move the files to the right place.
    Escaped XML characters like "&amp;" "&#34;" "&quot;" were fixed as of JCO 2.0.10 (the current patchlevel on AIX/UNIX), the special character "&apos;" is fixed in the next release, JCO 2.0.11, due out in a few weeks (hotfixes are available).  I don't know the equivalent versions on other platforms.  By default, XI 2.0 appears to have shipped with JCO 2.0.5.  I would expect many XI 3.0 users to also be affected.
    This may or may not apply to BC, because I don't know what BC uses to talk to SAP under the covers.

    What characterset are you using on the client? And what database characterset are you using (as you probably would want to store them in the database too)? Are you using 6i in client/server mode or in web?

  • Insert 'illegal' characters into file name for print label?

    Hey all (Happy New Year)
    I actually see some people here who helped me with this originally so many years ago (hi 'x'). Any way, I'm using this .js file to annotate aerial imagery prior to printing, and I know just enough about scripting to make changes to the basic layout as needs arise - until now. A new rather anal retentive mgr doesn't like substitutions I've made for a few 'illegal' characters that windows doesn't allow in file names. For example, the file name used for the annotation is:
    001    0003    1in = 660ft    CFL 154_074    01-01014   503-013.tif
    But Mr. mgr doesn't like the in, the ft and the use of the _ instead of a period (.) so what I need is a modification that goes something like (and note I DO NOT CODE, so stop laughing) -
    "look for in and replace with ", look for ft and replace with ' and look for _ and replace with , " so the final annotation written to the image is:
    001    0003    1" = 660'    CFL 154.074    01-01014   503-013.tif
    My current .js is below, I'd really appreciate any assistance. Thanks! TLL
    // CREATE NEW CANVAS W/SPACE ON TOP
    var deltaW = 0; // add 'N' pixels to the width
    var deltaH = 150; // add 'N' pixels to the height

    // SET FONT TYPE AND SIZE - use GetFontName.js to get exact name

    myTextRef.position = new Array( 30,110);
        // Set the Blend Mode of the Text Layer. The name must be in CAPITALS
        // ie change NORMAL to DIFFERENCE.
        myLayerRef.blendMode = BlendMode.NORMAL;
        // select opacity in percentage
        myLayerRef.opacity = 100;
        // The following code strips the extension and writes tha text layer.
        // fname = file name only
        //use extension if set
        if ( ShowExtension == "y" ) {
           fname = docRef.name;
         } else {
           di=(docRef.name).indexOf(".");
           fname = (docRef.name).substr(0, di);
         myTextRef.contents = fname;
         // docRef.flatten("n");
       } catch( e ) {
         // An error occurred. Restore ruler units, then propagate the error back
         // to the user
         preferences.rulerUnits = originalRulerUnits;
         throw e;
       // Everything went Ok. Restore ruler units
       preferences.rulerUnits = originalRulerUnits;
    }  else {
       alert( "You must have a document open to add the filename!" );

    I did some quick testing and here is what I have seen.
    I went into a cygwin shell and successfully did this:
    $ touch t\"est\'t.jpg
    $ ls t\"*
    t"est't.jpg
    This means that the underlying file system (NTFS) is able to correctly encode both the ' and " characters, at least as far as cygwin is concerned.
    However, from the Windows command line and Explorer point of view, the ' is OK but the " is not. The characters /\"*?<>:| can't be used in file names in Win. This means you can get the ' and . characters working but not the " character.
    From the js side, the code would look like:
    var x = "001    0003    1in = 660ft    CFL 154_074    01-01014   503-013.tif";
    var str = x.replace(/in/, '"').replace(/ft/, "'").replace(/_/, '.');
    alert(str);
    Which displays
    001    0003    1" = 660'    CFL 154.074    01-01014   503-013.tif
    The string stuff is easy, but while you can save a file with ' and . you can't use " via js. You can't even do it using the PS UI manually.
    I've tested and verified this. Let Mr. Mgr know that it is not possible to completely comply with his requests. Unless, of course, you upgrade to OS X : )

  • Where are my Web Form entries stored in the webBasics plan?

    Where are my Web Form entries stored in the webBasics plan? Currently—in my trial site—I can access Web Form responses through a Custom Report. Will this option be available to me in the webBasics plan?
    My hope is to use the webBasics plan with a Web Form (and a few custom fields) and have the reponses stored for me in the Businsess Catalyst interface.

    You do not get the CRM element of BC with the webbasic plan. With BC storing the forms it creates "cases" Which are stored against the "Customer" in the "CRM". You dont have access ot that with the webbasic plan.

  • Oracle Receiver JDBC Adapter - Handling Unicode Characters

    We have an IDOC to JDBC scenario.
    In this IDOC is sending data like -  10/14u2019/P7 After 4 there is special character coming from SAP ( It is not single quote).
    Mapping is going through OK and data is getting saved in Oracle Database as 10/14&#x19;/P7 with & # x 19;
    I came across following solution in forums and SAP Note.
    I am not sure how to modify Oracle JDBC URL to handle Unicode characters properly.
    Or is there any other approach we can follow to achieve this..
    Any input is really appreciated
    Q: I am inserting Unicode data into a database table or selecting Unicode data from a table. However, the data inserted into or retrieved from the table appears garbled. Why doesn't the JDBC Adapter handle Unicode correctly?
    A: While the JDBC Adapter is Unicode-aware, many JDBC drivers and/or database management systems aren't by default and need a codepage or Unicode-awareness to be configured explicitly. For the respective JDBC drivers, this codepage setting is often configured via the driver URL. For details, refer to the documentation of your JDBC driver or database management system.

    I used the URL you have mentioned, when we were on SP5. After that we upgraded to SP9.
    From SP9, if you try to use the URL http://XISERVER:50000/AdapterFramework then it automatically redirects to a new webpage with the link to the URL i have mentioned.

  • Handle special characters in the attribute name

    Hi,
    I am generating different view element in WD application dynamically. How to handle special characters other than '-/ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ_0123456789'  for the attribute name dynamically?
    Thank you, in advance.
    Trupti

    Going with the obvious response - don't use them?
    if you're using dynamic code, there is no reason (other than debug support) to give your created elements any meaningful name.
    Just generate a GUID for each new element and use that.
    If you need to be able to later search for and update the element a simple lookup table of GUID to reference string should work reasonably well.

    Good Catch Timo ... Lot of thanks.
    Still I will put down the silly mistake of overlooking the wizard.
    I was doing the correct thing - "create a new application and inside this application workspace you add a new 'project from war'." But mistake was .. First step of wizard it is project name and path,, and then second step is war location... and in hurry I was giving the project name and war location in first step.
    Thanks,
    Rajdeep
