Does anyone recommend OS X Lion?

I've seen many comments about people having different problems and trouble with the new OS X Lion, does anyone recommend me to download it? My current OS is Mac OS X 10.6.7.

I am waiting for Lion to be released on DVD before I make the change.
You make your own now.
Backup Lion Bootable 10.7  Disk
Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store on any Lion compatible Mac running Snow Leopard.
Right click on “Mac OS X     Lion”     installer and choose the option to     “Show Package Contents.”
Inside the Contents folder     that     appears you will find a SharedSupport     folder and inside the     SharedSupport folder     you will find the “InstallESD.dmg.” This is         the Lion boot disc image we have all been waiting for.
Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to         another folder like the Desktop.
Launch Disk Utility and click     the     burn button.
Select the copied “InstallESD.dmg” as the image to     burn,     insert a standard sized 4.7 GB DVD,     and wait for your new Lion Boot     Disc to come     out toasty hot.
With this disc you can boot any Lion compatible Mac, andinstall10.7 just like you installed previous version of Mac OS X. Youcan even use Disk Utility's Restore function to image your Lion bootdisc image onto a external drive suitable for performing a cleaninstall on a optical-drive-less MacBook Air, or Mac mini server.

Does anyone recommend a good graphic utility to prepare files for the web?

GraphicConverter as noted by Don, or Photoshop Elements are the favourites. Both will allow comprehensive editing, and save for web facilities including reducing the .jpg quality to shrink file size without making the picture smaller.
There is a free application calld Gimp (open source) but I don't know how good it is or whether it's updated for Lion.

    Hi there!
I just downloaded and installed OS X Lion, and I'm loving it so far.
However, I've seen that Mountain Lion will have some new features when it comes to social apps (what I call the ones that combine twitter, facebook, rss readers and so on).
So, does anyone knows any cools apps for that? I'm currently using Socialite, that combines all those three, but it has a few issues I don't particularly like. Plus, I'm using Adium for a msn client. I'm also thinking about downloading that beta version of "Messages" that will be realeased on Mountain Lion.
So, what do you think? Give me your ideas
    Thanks a lot in advance!
As Mountain Lion has not been released to the public yet, then most of us have no idea which companies have updated the development of their Apps for  ML. It is in Development phase so any App you try is at your own risk.
    Good Luck

I personally recommend sticking to the built-in Mac security system that should do great at protecting you.

  • Text to Speech conversion - Does anyone recommend any software?

I am currently looking at a way to convert the written text in my captivate modules into spoken word without recording a voice over. Ive only just started digging into it and wondered if Captviate itself has a way of doing this, or if any kind of 3rd party applications plug into Captviate to do it? Im on mac if that helps.
If neither of the above is possible, does anyone recommend any text to speech tools. I am really after something more along the lines of Siri etc rather than the old school more robotic sounding converters. I really am after something more natural and more believable as human.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have just discovered the in built content. The standard ones arent great so I have installed the Neospeech content. Ive just posted a problem I have encountered with those though. I would prefer an UK English male as its to represent a character I have created but I could settle with Paul if I cant find a better alternative.
I had considered voicing it myself but I dont want the character to become me or vice versa as the content will be used in my organisation and people will associate him with me.

  • Does anyone recommend Lifelock, etc?

Does anyone recommend Lifelock, etc for the iMac or MacPro?

Well, they advertise ID theft protection, tracking your credit score, etc. - not sure what that would have to do with a computer.
Aside from that, can't comment since I'd never heard of that company. Personally, I would not trust anyone/company just because they advertise online.

    Hi out there,
I am the proud new owner of a macbook pro and am lovin it! I used to talk with family and friends on windows live messenger but am not sure whether to download the mac version at microsoft incase of compromising the system and unfortunately IChat doesn't work with messenger contacts.  Does anyone have any advise on the mac version of messenger or is there an alternative program that i can download which may work better?  Thanks to anyone who may be able to advise me.

    Hi
Welcome to the Mac world! You can certainly download Messenger - there's no reason it should compromise your system. You could also look at Adium, which is MSN-compatible.

  • Does anyone know when Mountain Lion is being released?

I've seen the video and I'm psyched! But there's no mention of a release date. There's only a week left in July.

Neither does anyone else, though one guy has Tim Cook's calendar showing 23rd July

    Hey,
No Firewalls running no.. Well no software ones, just the hardware one in the DM602.
Incidentally I managed to find another DM602 user who said to me that the Modem / Router in 'Modem Only' mode works fine.. just using the Airport Express/Extreme set up as the router.
Will have to wait and see once I have bought the Airport Express as Modem Only mode without another Router caused me all kinds of confusion and left me unable to connect to the net or even to the Modem/Router directly when I was fiddling around with it.
But yeah, I agree that it's odd that Mac make everything else BUT the modem to connect to an ADSL line.. and then recommend rubbish 3rd party hardware that wont allow it's customers to use it's own well designed software..
Bit annoying.. you try and be a good Mac disciple and model consumer - Mac all the way, and still run into grief..

  • Does anyone else have Mountain lion stability issues that cause a crash once a week?

I have a mid-2011 27-inch iMac with 16GB ram and upgraded to Mountain lion as soon as it was available (like always for last 5 years); 8th Mac I've owned. Early on there were a few bugs and issues that I thought would go away just like previous upgrades.  But it's been half a year now and I crash about every other day!  This is by far the worst Apple OS change ever, from a stability perspective.  What happens is I will do some mundane task (could be anything really) that will give be a spinning beach ball and then it gets worse.  No programs respond and eventually the only thing to do is complete power off shutdown.  What triggers this: clicking to open photo in Aperture, clicking a website icon in Safari, clicking upgrade software in App Store, running a backup with time machine, etc. etc.  I can't detect any pattern as it's happened a lot.  I'm a photographer so I spend more time in Aperture than most users and see a lot of crashes from there, but it's not just Aperture.  This is getting to be like MS Windows.  Apple - help!  Please fix this OS before I have to buy a PC for better stability.

  • Does anyone recommend a way to even sound levels on MP3 files

I have tried iVolume and the new version of Macgain, but that wouldn't load.
    Any ideas?

You need some EQ, whether its on a mixer in between the mic and the mac or in software is up to you. Start at the Blue Microphone forums.
And the closer you get to the mic the more enhancement of the lower tones will happen, leave lipstick on it for Marlene Dietrich

  • Does anyone recommend a third party app called siri-for-iphone-4?

I saw a third party app called siri-for-iphone-4 which is supposed to add siri to older iphone 4, but do not know if it is suitable or useable.

Is it an app that you can download from the App Store? If it is not, it would require that you jailbreak your phone which would void your warranty. Definitely not worth it, in my opinion.l

  • Best reasonably priced wide angle lens does anyone recommend?

I have a 70d and would like to get much more from close up wide angular shooting, without breaking the bank.
Are there alternatives to a canon 10-22mm or 12-24 ( not sure if my specs are correct, no doubt someone will put me straight!) , sigma...tokina..etc..?

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm is hard to beat. It's an excellent lens, well corrected, fast focusing, nice color renditions, super sharp, very good flare control (better than any other ultrawide I've seen). The only thing I'd tick as a negative is the lens hood is quite large... still, after testing I wouldn't be without it.
Tokina AT-X 12-24mm is the lens I rank second. It's also good in all respects, might even be better built (reminds me very much of a 17-35/2.8 L I had). It is not quite as sharp as the Canon and not quite as good handling flare. But still is excellent and better than most. It's also on sale right now (there's a new model out).
The Tokina 11-16mm is a popular lens for those who feel they need an ultrawide with f2.8 aperture. It's the only one that offers that. It is very sharp, close to or maybe even sharper than the Canon. However, it's quite prone to flare. Some people have no problem with that... Others have told me they ended up getting a different lens instead, because of the flare issues. I guess it depends upon what you shoot and how you shoot it, but flare can be an issue with lenses that cover a very wide angle of view. It's also a significant trade-off to get to f2.8, that this lens only has a very narrow range of focal lengths. All other ultrawides are at least 2X zooms. 11-16mm is only 1.45X.
Tokina has a new 12-28/4 out now, too... I have not used or compared it.
These three Tokinas and two Sigmas offer non-variable aperture design. All other ultrawides have variable apertures. This may or may not matter to you. I think the main place where variable aperture may be an issue is if using manual flash or studio strobes a lot. Variable aperture isn't a big deal for most.
Sigma offers a number of ultrawides. Their most affordable is a 10-20mm with a variable aperture. It's a decent lens that a lot of people find fine. I tried out an earlier version and decided I liked the Tokina better, so bought that instead (I now also have the Canon 10-22mm). Main thing I noticed was slightly less sharpness and more flare. But, do note that this lens has been revised once or twice since then and newer versions might improve upont this.
Sigma also offers a 10-20mm f3.5 with a non-variable aperture. It is quite large, heavy and more expensive. I have never used it.
SIgma also offers the widest of the wide... an 8-16mm. I haven't used it. It has strong, inherent wide angle distortion effects (almost as much as a fisheye lens). But that's to be expected with such an extreme lens.
There is a Sigma 12-24/4, too... but it's actually a full-frame capable lens (widest of the wide for FF, in fact), which makes it larger, more expensive and less well corrected. Not necessary for a 70D with it's APS-C crop sensor.
Finally, there is a Tamron 10-24mm. It's been many years since I tried one, but I seem to recall it was a bit soft in the 18-24mm range and didn't seem as well made as some of the others. It has been one of the more affordable and offered the widest range of focal lengths in a single zoom.
There aren't many prime lenses that are truly wide on a crop sensor camera. The only fairly affordable one that comes to mind is the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f2.8. It's a manual focus, manual aperture lens that's full frame capable, but just barely gets into the ultrawide category for crop sensor cameras too. Sells under a bunch of different brand names, besides Rokinon or  Samyang you'll also see it as a Vivitar (they call it a 13mm), Bower, ProOptic... maybe some more.
Most other ultrawide primes tend to be quite pricey (Canon's own 14/2.8L, Zeiss 15mm, for example).
You'll have to define what "best" means for you. All ultrawides have different pluses and minuses. You'll also have to decide what you consider "affordable". Have fun shopping!
