Does arp cache clear when i/f unplugged

Hi,
Does IOS automatically clear the arp cache, fast-switching cache and route cache for all IP addresses in a particular subnet if the router interface on that subnet is unplugged, or do I need to do,
clear arp interface <type> <number>
and
clear arp-cache
as is shown at,
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_4/ip_addr/configuration/guide/ipb_arp_ps6350_TSD_Products_Configuration_Guide_Chapter.html#wp1096656
Thanks, MH

MH
If you unplug the router interface and if the router interface then goes to line protocol down, then the ARP cache entries associated with that interface should be cleared.

  • Does the cache matter when choosing hard drive for mac pro?

    Hi,
I have been looking at all the specs to see about adding another hard drive to my mac pro. It is the 1st generation 2006 duel. I am getting a bit confused about the specs required! I don't understand cache? I think that mine is 8 cache, but a lot of the drives I am looking at are 16 or more. Is this important, have I got to stick to 8? Also does it matter about which Sata? i.e. 1, 11 or 111? and what does 'low profile' mean? Fitting it seems really easy, but buying the wrong drive seems easy as well!
    Thanks for any help,
    Adrian.

Desktop drives are nominal 3.5" form factors, about one inch tall. They use a 12 Volt motor to spin the heavy platters around fairly fast.
Notebook rotating drives are mostly 2.5" form factor, now mostly around 9.5mm tall, possibly less. They have only 5 Volts available to spin the motor.
SATA 1, 2, 3 -- 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 is all specsmanship -- rotating drives cannot source data off the spinning platters faster than  a burst of about 150 Mbytes/sec (1.2 Mbits/sec). So that part does not matter except that the 1.5 drives will be older models. Do note pay extra for better SATA speeds.
Rotation speed is very important, because that determines how fast the bits can fly past the read head. 5400 RPM is slower than 7200 RPM. A few 10,000 RPM drives are available, but they are too pricey for most users. I use 10,000 RPM drives in my Server. For Desktop computers, DO pay extra for 7200 over 5400. For notebook computers, a few 7200 RPM drives are available, but they sometimes run HOT.
Green drives, on the other hand, take great liberties with spin rates and sleeping, and are not suitable for production (great for Backups, but then they are not candidates for spares for your main drives). For these reasons, I do not own any Green Drives.
Large-enough cache size means the drive can read an entire track in one revolution, so that if you next ask for blocks near the original block you will not wait the average 4.166 milliseconds for the platter to spin halfway around to pick up new data (it is waiting, pre-fetched in the cache). So do not pay extra above about 8Mbytes, but use larger cache size as a tie breaker between equivalent models.

  • Problems with cache.clear()

    Hello!
We are having some problems with cache clears in our production cluster that we do once a day. Sometimes heaps "explode" with a lot of outgoing messages when we do a cache.clear() and the entire cluster starts failing.
We had some success with a alternate method of doing the cache clear where we iterate cache.keySet() and do a cache.remove(key) with a pausetime of 100 ms after 20000 objects until the cache is empty. But today nodes started failing on a cache.size() before the removes started (the first thing we do is to log the size of the cache we are about to clear before the remove operations start).
We have multiple distributed caches configured with a near cache. The nearcache has 10k objects as high units and the back caches vary in size, the largest is around 300k / node.
In total the DistributedCache-service is handling ~20 caches.
The cluster consists of 18 storage enabled nodes spread across 6 servers and 31 non storage enabled nodes running on 31 servers.
The invalidation stategy on the near caches is ALL (or, its AUTO but it looks like it selects ALL since ListenerFilterCount=29 and ListenerKeyCount=0 on a StorageManager?)
Parition count is 257, backup count 1, no changes in thread count on the service, service is DistributedCache.
    Coherence version 3.6.1.0.
A udp test sending from one node to another displays 60 megabyte/s.
Heapsize for the Coherence JVMs, 3gb. LargePages is used.
Heapsize for the front nodes JVMs, 6gb. LargePages is used.
No long GC-times (until the heaps explode), 0.2-0.6 seconds. CMS-collector.
    JDK 1.6 u21 64-bit.
    Windows 2k8R2.
We are also running CoherenceWeb and some Read/Write-caches, but on different coherence services. We are not doing any clear/size-operations against caches owed by these services.
Looking at some metrics from the last time we had this problem (where we crashed on cache.size()).
The number of messages sent by the backing nodes went from <100/s to 20k-50k/s in 15 s.
The number of messages resent by the backing nodes went from ~0/s to 1k-50k/s depending on the node in 15 s.
At the time the total number of requests against the DistributedCache-service was around 6-8/s and node.
To my questions, should it be a problem to do a cache clear with this setup (where the largest cache is around 5.4 million entires) ? Should it be a problem to do a cache.size()?
What is the nicest way to do a cache.clear()? Any other strategy?
Could a lock on a entry in the cache cause this problem? Should it really cause a problem with cache.size()?
    Any advice?

    Carl

    Hi Charlie,
Thank you for your answer! Yes, actually we are using a lot of expiry and many of the items are created at roughly the same time! We haven't configured expiry in the cache configuration, instead we do a put with a expire.
Regarding the workload, compared to our peak hours it has been very low when had problems with the size and clear operations. So the backing tier isn't really doing much at the time. That's what has been so strange with this problem.
The release going live today has PRESENT as near cache invalidation strategy. We remove as much of the expire as possible in the next.
    BR,
    Carl

  • Yosemite 10.10.1 - DNS cache does not clear when switching between WiFi networks

Before updating to Yosemite, DNS caches would clear when switching between WiFi networks, as they should.
For Example, when using an Exchange server, your server name might be something like mail.company.com. Outside of the corporate LAN the IP would resolve to the outside (WAN) address. When you move the laptop inside the corporate LAN, it should clear the cache so mail.company.com resolves to the internal (LAN) address.  This is just one example of a dumb DNS transition not taking place switching from outside to inside (and vice versa).
Instead, OS X is holding onto the outside DNS record even when moving to the Corporate LAN. The only way to fix is to run the DNS cache command (which is MUCH more convoluted in Yosemite now), or more easily, to quickly turn off then turn on WiFi.
This is an irritation as I have to perform this action every morning, and every time I come back to my desk from offsite.

Well, clearing the caches is as simple as this, no?
    Clear MDNS Cache
    sudo discoveryutil mdnsflushcache
    Clear UDNS Cache
    sudo discoveryutil udnsflushcaches
One other thing: Have you tried 10.10.2? There are many many fixes in 10.10.2 over 10.10.1.

  • ARP cache needs clearing constantly

I help manage a WISP network which has a Cisco 3750 at its core and a couple of Cisco 7200 routers to two separate ISPs. We have configured public and private VLANs. The infrastructure is based on point to multipoint links with cisco SG300 switches at each main location. I have a problem where devices are not contactable until the ARP cache on the router is cleared or they are pinged from a device on the local LAN. It seems that as soon as the switch times out the address from the CAM tables, it will not respond until the ARP cache is cleared. A simple example is this.
    router 10.201.1.1 --- Core switch --- switch 10.201.2.254 --- AP 10.201.2.55 --- CP 10.201.2.37 --- Customer x.x.102.37
All devices remain active up to the AP. The CP and customer will drop off the network randomly. I would expect the traffic to refresh the CAM table as per normal. The ARP cache on the router shows the exact same information before and after clearing so there is no spoofing or eroneous info there. This is not an isolated case, it is exactly the same across all of the other devices in the setup.
This has only become apparant since moving the devices to being managed in VLAN 201. prior to that, the client had everything (over 3000) devices in VLAN 1 with public IPs along side Private. Obviously a problem.
Anyone seen this sort of problem and able to offer any tips, ideas or suggestions? I am all out of ideas.
    Thanks.
    Marty

Just to add to this. I have read a lot of information about HSRP and having to synce CAM and ARP tables. I am not using HSRP and in this case, the second 7200 router is connected to a different ISP and operates completely separately.
In light of the information on HSRP. I have reduced the ARP timer for the two VLANs to 240 seconds, which being less than the CAM timer of 300 seconds means that the CAM table always remains up to date. I see this as a work around because it will obviously lead to a large amount of ARP traffic but it does seem to fix this problem. I am not sure why when the CAM table loses the MAC address, fresh traffic doesn't reach the switch and trigger the update of the CAM table. It seems like the traffic is not being sent to the right place.

  • Clear arp-cache to ping

I have an SMS server on my network that is unreachable from vlans other that its own. This happened after we pushed out tumbleweed via SMS. Now, in order to ping the server I must issue a clear arp-cache in the core switch, this only last for about 1 min and then the SMS server is unreachable again. Any help would be great.

    Thanks Dabels,
I have had this problem as well, it turned out to be a pix.
Proxy-arp is enabled by default on all interfaces and its not apparent in the config when its on or off. Its configured as a sysopt and therefore, it often gets overlooked.
Agree with everything you say, check the mac in the arp table of the server when your pings are failing, then trace the MAC you find there which corresponds to the ip address of the router.
Or check the arp entry in the router (again when its failing) and verify the MAC is the SMS server, it may just turn out to be a router or a pix or even....another server which is routing between a pair of NIC's, such as a unix box or a windows server.
Let us know how you get on.
    Cheers
    Shaun

  • HT1600 This update fails every time, even when rebooting, cache clearing, etc...

Anyone else having troubles with this update installing? My Apple TV just said it is available today (12/07/2012) so tried to update. Each time it goes through the entire 1 of 2 process and then fails. Message appears saying to restart the device and try again. After restarting and trying again I get the same message. Tried clearing the cache and retrying. Still fails. Any other thoughts???

I have followid information found on another forum and have managed to successfully install the update. It appears the issue is tied to the Ethernet connection. Strange, usually the problems I have with my Apple TV3 are related to using Wi-Fi rather than connecting via the Ethernet Cable.
At this point I have tried the following:
Reboot the device as suggested by the on screen information. (no resolution)
Clear the cache and reboot. (no resolution)
Unplug the AppleTV power cable and let sit three minutes before repowering. (no resolution)
Unplug the Ethernet Cable and connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. (solves the problem)
Apple needs to test these updates a little further and make sure they work on all methods of connecting. The issue should have been remedied quickly by either fixing the patch or at minimum sending us an E-Mail notifying us of the error. In fact, why am I not getting an E-Mail letting me know that a new version of software is out? Isn't that one of the things we opt-in for when signing up for accounts?

  • Internet keeps going in and out - "unable to clear ARP Cache"

I recently upgraded my WRT54GS firmware to ver. 4.whatever the most recent is. I also secured the wireless router using the WPE key. My internet connection on one of my wireless laptops will cut out for about 30 + minutes and when I try to reconnect to the network it says unable to clear the arp cache. This same laptop had no problems when the network was unsecured and the firmware was ver 2. whatever.
Any help would be appreciated as this laptop is used to work from home two days a week.

  • Does anyone know why- when I iport a one minute video project into Final Cut X from I Movie the resolution that looked alright in IMovie full screen becomes worst in final cut, full screen...but clear when it is in still position?

Does anyone know why- when I import a one minute video project into Final Cut X from I Movie the resolution that looked alright full screen in I Movie instantly becomes worst on full screen in Final Cut X...but clear again when I stop it to still position?

I'm new to video editing but I think I recall seeing an option in FCPX which lets you choose the video quality for the preview window. I think the window reduces the quality when playing back for performance reasons and so perhaps that is why it seems to have less quality when moved over to FCPX? Just a possibility, I'm sure one of the more experienced users can confirm or deny this theory.

  • Cache, cookies and history are not clearing when I close Firefox even though they are set to do so and have been for ages

I recently had an update (or upgrade?) for FF 16. Today (and I believe the update was done a day or two ago?) my cache, cookies and history are not clearing when I close FF. Also, certain links are not working. Not links for full web pages but for site pop-ups (like the smilie window on a message board). They worked a few days but are not working today. I click the link and nothing happens. I noticed the problem with the cookies not clearing for a few weeks ago but it was only on one site not all sites which is what's happening now.
My apologies if that's a little confusing. Thanks!

At any rate, have you tried running Firefox in Private Browsing mode? This will ensure that no infromation from your session is saved once you exit Private Browsing mode and/or exit Firefox.
You can set Firefox to always start in Private Browsing mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/private-browsing-browse-web-without-saving-info#w_how-do-i-always-start-firefox-in-private-browsing

  • Why when I delete photos (from disk) does it not clear space on my hard drive?

I went from 800  photos to 51 and my available HD space remains the same.  So in total I deleted about 750 20+MB files.  I should have more space free on my hard drive but there is nothing.  I make sure to choose "delete from disk" as opposed to just "remove" so I can't imagine the problem.  I even went back in and erased back ups in the lightroom folder wondering if maybe the images were hiding out there.  Deleting back up folders made nominal difference.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rob,
You are right. It was GB not MB.  I am sure the disk I am looking at is the correct one.  I go to the apple, about this mac, more info, storage.  Unfortunately I just hit empty trash over and over without looking to see if the files made it in.  It has always cleared space before so I assumed it would this time.  I do think they made it as I always heard the sound of the trash clearing but I did not actually look for the files first.
I did a lot of research yesterday as to what could be going on and found an article that said time machine backs up locally on my HD and if I want space I can disable that.  I found the folder with the back ups and saw there were many.  I followed the tutorial online and disabled the back ups and now the folder is gone so you would think- more space.  Not one single GB was returned.
I ended up erasing music and photos from iPhoto and a few movies and space cleared when I did those things.  Still wondering what happened and want the other space back.  750 raw files is a lot of space, or should be.
Wondering if there is some back up to the back up somewhere.....
Thanks for responding .. I will take all input I can get!

  • ARP Cache Poison behavior by Apple TV

Norton Anti-Virus reports blocking an ARP Cache Poison attack against my home network.  The reported source of the attack is the MAC number of the Apple TV on the network.
Whether Norton is "reliable" is apparently contentious in the support community.  Several authors suggest, with authority, disabling Norton or the particular attack profile.
Whether that makes sense depends on what the Apple TV is innocently doing to be profiled as a network attack.
Even when supposedly "asleep" the Apple TV is doing something that meets the profile of an ARP Cache Poison attack.  It did it every 30 minutes today, nine times yesterday, about 30 times day before and etc.
And if it is a design feature of the device, why is the device still performing despite having the activity continously blocked?  What is the purpose of this attack-like activity, assuming it is not an attack?  If it is an attack, how does one erase the programming initiating the attacks and still have an Apple TV?

Short answer: it is a false positive.  I don't know exactly what causes it but I would guess Apple's Bonjour protocol, which is why you see something every 30 minutes.  That's just a blind guess, but seems to fit.
Realize that a report of ARP poisoning wouldn't be likely on a private LAN, unless you got infected somehow.  No known malware like this for iOS devices (and much harder to insert one on AppleTV versus an iPhone or iPad.)  There are legitimate cases where ARP spoofing is used.  And even Cisco has instances where they say to ignore that warning:
CSCsm25943—The meaning of the following error message on the controller is not clear. This message does not necessarily imply that any actual "ARP poisoning" is occurring. Rather, this message appears when a WLAN is configured for DHCP Required and a client (after associating to this WLAN) transmits an ARP message without first using DHCP. The client is unable to send or receive any data traffic until it performs DHCP through the controller.
    DTL-1-ARP_POISON_DETECTED: STA [00:01:02:0e:54:c4, 0.0.0.0] ARP (op 1) received with
    invalid SPA 192.168.1.152/TPA 192.168.0.206
    Workaround: Perform the following steps:
    • Verify that the client eventually does perform DHCP without undergoing an unacceptable outage. If the outage before performing DHCP is acceptable, then you can ignore this message.
I'm not saying that Norton's message is the same as Cisco's.  Just that Cisco states that the meaning of why the message appears is not clear and sometimes is acceptable.  And Cisco is the world leader in networking technology so if they don't always know why you get an ARP poisoning warning....
I won't go into the politics of "Norton bad" or whatever, but based on my experience (bias) with Norton in it's various forms for over 10 years, IMHO you can ignore this.  Hopefully you can configure Norton to selectively ignore this.  If not, you may have to use a different security program.  Me personally, I do not recommend any "security suites" because they cause exactly this kind of additional headache.  Just a "plain" antivirus program.  Windows has a built-in firewall and most people will be using a hardware firewall at the office or home so the firewall in the "security suite" is extraneous.
