Does hibernation take any hard drive space?

Hi.
I am the proud owner of a brand new Toshiba I received for Christmas. I am asking this because last night my battery was running out of power and then my mom called me to the living room and eventually the battery ran out and the computer hibernated. When I turned it back on it went back to what I was doing when I left the room, working on my manuscript on Word. I am wondering if this will take up any hard drive space. That way I will know not to let it hibernate again and to be sure to plug the thing in before I leave the room.
Thanks for your help!!
Magali.

In hibernation, data from RAM is dumped to the hard drive. Your hib file (it's a hidden system file usually located on C: as hiberfil.sys) will be equivalent to the amount of RAM you have on your computer. The hib file continually exists, in order to be ready to absorb your RAM upon hibernation. It does not increase or decrease in size over time. The drive wear is insignificant. It's basically a way to have your precise computer state perfectly conserved (as with sleep), but without draining battery or AC power (unlike sleep).
If you don't plan on using Hibernation I believe you can turn it off and free up the disk space - Look Control Panel / Power Options / Advanced Power Settings

  • Windows XP re-installation does not recognize any hard drive - help

    Hi,
    I have X60s Model: 17044JU
    I have original XP installed.
My computer is very slow and I am trying to reinstall XP from my CD (and format HD so I clean everything).
When Windows installations blue screen shows up and loads drivers etc then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drive.
I thought I may need SCSI or RAID drivers but since I don't have floppy I can not load them.
Any help how to install new XP would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi
I changed BIOS setup from AHCI to Compatibility and indeed it worked.
However there is easier way to reload new system on thinkpad.
I didn't know that but you can press ThinkVantage button when you start your laptop and IBM utilities start up.
Then there is an option to reload the system to be in original state as shipped from the factory. It loads or drivers and initial programs. It also formats your hard drive.
    I found it pretty convenient.
    Thanks for help.

  • Does the desktop creative cloud folder take up hard drive space?

I know this is proabaly a stupid question but does the creative cloud file folder use hard drive space. So in other words, I place a 24MB picture in that Creative Cloud File folder to sync with my cloud files and other devices. Is it taking up 24MB of space on my macbook air? For some reason my brain is not processing this. There must be some advantage to storage and some type of preview instead of fully storing the file on my local computer but just checking to see how this works. Thanks.

It's a folder on your HD.  And just like any other folder on your HD it occupies space.  The more content you have inside it, the more space it takes.

What version of FCE is this? Most likely your version of QuickTime doesn't work with it. Do a forum search and you'll probably find some solutions.

  • WSE2012R2 Dashboard Stoage Tab Does Not Show ANY Hard Drives or Folders

I have been using WSE2012 for nearly two years as a "home" server. I recently decided to upgrade to R2. After spending several days trying to "migrate" to R2 without any success, I finally did a fresh install to my original system drive
(a 240Gb Samsung 840 Evo SSD). The install went well until I checked all of my data drives (4x2Tb, 2x1Tb, 1x3Tb and a 2Tb "storage spaces" drive). I found that only three of the drives were online and useable. The "storage spaces" drives
were not even visible in Disk Manager and all of the other drives were "offline". After doing a lot of searching with Google, I finally figured out how to make the "offline" drives "Online" with PowerShell. With much more searching,
I also finally figured out how to "bring back" the "storage spaces" drives with about four lines of PowerShell code so I thought I was finally home free... But no such luck. I then had a lot of trouble restoring my "ServerFolders"
although everything else seemed to be working. I also had rebooted several times while working on these things without any issues. After finishing up yesterday, I planning to finish working on the "ServerFolders" earlier today.
I ran into a problem right away, however, when I opened the Dashboard and went to the Storage tab only to find that NONE of the Hard Drives and "Server Folders" showed up. I had an alert that the "Server Storage Service" was
NOT running. I checked and found it to be "stopped" and in "manual" mode. After starting the service, the Storage Tab showed that it was being refreshed. After a lengthy wait, it never did refresh and the "Server Folders" item
on the Home Tab showed "N/A". I tried rebooting again. When the server came up, I checked the service again and found it to be running (although it was still on "manual")... But once again, Storage Tab never did refresh properly and still
showed nothing. This time I changed the service to "Auto" and also tried "Restarting" the service, to no avail. I rebooted again. This time, when it came back up, I first checked the service again and it was running and still on "Auto".
Before opening the Dashboard, I checked the "Files and Storage" section in "Server Manager" and everything looked good. All of my hard drives and my "storage spaces" drive appeared with no apparent issues so I thought that everything
was finally OK... Wrong!!!!! I opened the Dashboard and went back to the Storage Tab only to find that it still would NOT refresh so that NONE of my hard drives or folders were showing. I am totally lost at the moment. How can everything actually be there
and okay but NOT appear in the Dashboard which, by the way, was working fine yesterday -- and I did not make any changes whatsoever between yesterday and starting to work on the system today. I am totally lost. Can anyone please help me resolve this
    issue?????

PROBLEM SOLVED. As I was just getting ready to "bite-the-bullet" and reinstall 2012 R2, I discovered something that led me to the solution. When I was previously trying to restart the Windows Storage Service, I "thought" it was restarting
okay. I was restarting it by right-clicking on the service. When I "started" it this way without opening up the service properties, it would immediately change from "stopped" to "running". What I did not realize was that the service
was quickly stopping "without" refreshing the screen so that "running" was still displayed even though the service had stopped. Once I realized that the service was not actually restarting, I tried another Google search based on this fact
which led me to some forum threads that helped me solve the problem since I found others with essentially the same problem. I found two corrupted registry keys under Windows Server\Storage Services. One of the keys was a major entry, the other was in the "Folders"
subfolder. After deleting BOTH keys, the service restarted without any issues and my drives and folders reappeared in the dashboard. A reboot was "not" required. What a pain! But everything is good now.

  • HT4914 Do songs on Match take up hard drive space on devices?

Want to know before I purchase.

Apple's figure for how many songs can be stored on an iPod are based on a song of four minutes in length and encoded (imported) into iTunes at 128kbps AAC format. If your songs are in another format, they could be taking up more space.
Depending on the music you listen to, each song may be more than four minutes (not unusual in this day and age), so simply adding the extra time of each track together will reduce the number of songs you can store. If you import the songs at the higher AAC rate (which is 256Kbps), that halves the number of songs your iPod can store - at a stroke!
So, first of all, what format and bit rate are your songs in? If you've imported them from a variety of sources, they may be in several different formats, so you need to check several songs from different albums before deciding that they are all the same.
To find the bit rate for a song, select it in iTunes and choose File/Get Info/Summary. On that tab, look for the following (my example song in MP3 format):
    Kind: MPEG audio file
    Format: MPEG 1, Layer 3
    Size: 4.3 MB
    Bit Rate: 128kbps
and that's for a song of 4 minutes 35 seconds.
One more thing you should consider. If you're buying a Touch (as opposed to a Nano for instance), and your music collection is (let's say) 5GB, you may soon run out of space on an 8GB iPod if you start adding Apps to your Touch. Plus, if you buy any more music on top of what you already have, once again, you may run out of space. So if you're already worried about space on an 8GB Touch, it's probably too small.
Here's another example from my collection, this time in iTunes AAC format:
    Kind: AAC audio file
    Profile: Low Complexity
    Size: 7.2 MB
    Bit Rate: 256kbps
and that's for a song of 4 minutes 36 seconds.
So, one second longer, in Apple's AAC format, and also at twice the bit rate, but less than twice the size (7.2 MB).

  • Trashing photos still takes up hard drive space

I am throwing away photos from iPhoto to reduce the amount of storage needed (I have them backed up).  I have 7 gigs of photos left in iPhoto acording to the information window at the bottom left of iPhoto window.   The problem is that I still have about 45 gigs of photos in my "Pictures" folder.

iPhoto has its own method of managing photos.
You are better off backing up what you need as a whole Pictures folder elsewhere than trying to trash photos.

  • Can't download applications (poss due to hard drive space issue)?

    Hi there,
I'm having major hard drive issues with my MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.11 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM laptop.
I use it for video editing and also keep music on it. However for the video editing I use an external hard drive, though I've found some Final Cut Pro files on my internal hard drive before and deleted them whenever I've found them. Sometimes it's an Imovie project, sometimes a straightforward final cut project, sometimes a playout of a final cut project.
My problem is that I now have almost no hard drive space, to the point where I wasn't able to save a Word file last week due to insufficient disk space! I emptied the trash and managed to get it to save in the end.
I immediately went on to the discussions pages and it was suggested to try WhatSize, OmniDiskSweeper and Disk Inventory to identify the files that were taking up all the room. Unfortunately NONE of these applications will download onto my laptop. They're not the only ones, I tried downloading a couple of other applications for music and the like and NOTHING will download!
I went through everything that I felt I knew for certain that I could delete without being detrimental and freed up a small bit of room and tried again but still NOTHING. I then used Onyx on the suggestion of another post and freed up a few gigs (I went from 1.7gb available to 7gb available) and assumed that this would do the trick, however, it hasn't!
What happens when I try to download these (or any) applications is that when i click the "Download Now" area on the webpage it begins to move onto what should be a download progress page or a "download complete" page but instead just spends an eternity "loading", with the little loading wheel on the left of the tab just spinning around and around. I tried leaving it literally all night last night but to no avail, opened it back up again and still the circle was spinning around and around "loading". This has been the case for the several dozen attempts I've made, no matter what the website.
It seems like something of a Catch 22 if the situation is that I can't download these applications that will help me to free up Hard Drive space, because I don't have any Hard Drive space! Though I'd have thought that the 7gb I now have would be ample. Did my laptop turn to self preservation mode perhaps when the hard drive was down to the bare minimum and I wasn't even able to save word documents?
If anybody can help it'd be HUGELY appreciated...
    All the best,
    Rory

If you open a Finder window you can also sort by size by clicking the size column header. In view options you can also set it to calculate all sizes so it will also show folder sizes. Although not as handy as the cataloging applications you can at least start tracking down where the disk space is going. With video you can probably just copy half a dozen files off and immediately free up many GB.
Note that this isn't just a matter of convenience. OSX makes lots of temporary files and is doing it all the time. If it can't find space for those files it can result in a serious drive crash and that could cost you several hundred dollars in recovery expenses. A Sig indicates, you need space just for computer operation. I feel the % recommendation is a bit vague since people use drives ranging from 10 - 1000 GB in size. My computer regularly uses 6GB of hard drive space for temporary files, and I like to leave wriggle room, so I usually leave at least 15-20GB. You can check the temporary file usage by looking at VM in Activity monitor.
As BDaqua observes, having a crowded drive also slows down your computer. If it has to hunt for nooks and crannies in which to place bits and pieces of bigger files that takes time. Normally one does not have to worry so much about fragmentation of files on a Mac, but your scenario of working with large files on a really crowded drive may be defying that generalization.

  • Out of Hard Drive space with Mavericks

This new library system with Mavericks and FC 10.1.3 is confusing.  I end up with too many events that take up hard drive space.
Question.  Can I load FCPx on a separate, external 3 terabyte drive and work from that?  Would that solve my drive space issue on my iMac HD?
What would be the step by step process to do that or, a better idea?
Thanks a pile.  I have HD constipation!
    G

Your application must be in the Applications folder, but your libraries can and indeed *should* be in an external drive. They can be stored anywhere, no need to put them in special designated folders as before.
The library system actually makes managing your stuff extremely easy. A library is a single document, so you can simply move it in the Finder (when FCP X is not running).
You can have as many or as few libraries as you want, copy them, move them, etc. You don't have to have everything active at once in FCP X. Open and close libraries as needed (whereas before, all events on a given drive were loaded, you can now just open a single library in a disk containing dozens of them).
Take the time to familiarize with the library concept and you'll find that it is much better than what we had before.

I have never heard of a relation between the enabled state of Time Machine, and boot. Its probably coincidental.
Try booting in Safe Mode (hold down shift key, whilst booting). Then check for apllications in your Users & Groups preferences that are starting up with login. Disable all startup apps, then eanable them one at a time, booting normall. See which app is possibly hanging.
You can also try doing a Repair Permissions and Repair Disk on your startup drive. This must be done within Disk Utility when booted to your Recovery Partition. To boot to the Recovery Partition, hold down the OPTION key while booting, and select the Recovery Partition drive to boot from. Then run Disk Utility.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • How do I delete Photo Stream photos that are taking up hard drive space in my Masters folder, but not actually appearing in any event, or on the interface at all?

A couple months ago, I activated photo stream using my apple ID. I was under the impression that all the photos uploaded to my photo stream would only use server space on icloud and wouldn't actually utilize disk space, or at the most, the option was available to only download specific photos to my hard drive. My hope was that I could upload the photos to a specific drive, and view the uploaded thumbs or low-res comps on any device as a reference.
    This is not the case.
What I have found is that iphoto has been automatically downloading any and all photos uploaded to my photo stream. Not just the thumbnails, the entire thumbnail + all resolutions. I shoot RAW photos so in my case, the original averages about 15-25MB per photo.
I have been uploading directly to an iphoto library on an external hard drive specifically designated for handling all my RAW high-res images.
What has been happening is all those RAW files are also being uploaded directly to my iphoto library on my iMac and eating up memory which I cannot reclaim, even after deactivating my Photo Stream in preferences. We're talking almost 100 GB of memory is tied up right now.
I don't want to just go in and start deleting files and folders in my Masters folder, since I have heard this will break iphoto, but the photos in my photostream do not show up in any event and I need to reclaim the hard drive space.
How can I safely delete them?

If the files are loose inside the iPhoto library package here's one way to get them out:
1 - open your library, select all of the photos in the library and add a unique keyword, XXXX,  to all of them.
2 - Rebuild the library with  iPhoto Library Manager  as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
3 - open the library, create a smart album with the criterial "Keyword is not XXXX".
4 - the smart album will include those photos that were not visible in your original library. Select them and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin.
5 - empty the iPhoto Trash bin via the iPhoto ➙ Empty iPhoto Trash Bin menu option.
6 - empty the Trash bin in the Dock to remove the files from your hard drive completely.
Be sure to read Note 1 above.  You can use the new library without your books, slideshow, etc. and it will not  contain those errant files.  Of course delete the original library if the new one is satisfactory.
