Does iMovie alter movies imported at full 1080i (1920x1080) ?

I have a new Sony HDR HC9 1080i camcorder (Mini DV tape).
I heard rumors that iMovie converts movies imported at full 1920x1080 to something like 900 x 480.
Is there any truth to this ugly rumor?
Thanks.
Paul

This not not exactly true.
iMovie imports movies into Event files at the same resolution as their source. If you import 1920x1080 in AVCHD, the event contains an AIC file in 1920x1080.
However, when you use the Event footage in a project, the standard iMovie pre-sets for rendering top out at 960x540 (which is exactly half of 1920x1080). However, by using the Export to QuickTime option, it is possible to render in full 1920x1080.
However, for most people, the 960x540 is good enough. It is about the largest size that can be reasonably streamed over the internet. It is the largest size accepted by the Apple TV. And it easily upscales to 1920x1080 on a high quality receiver/TV with upscaling circuitry. If you are burning a DVD, it will be downscaled to 480i anyway.
As I mentioned, you can export in full 1920x1080 through QuickTime. The issue is "How do I play it?". Some people have reportedly been successful playing these files on a Sony Playstation 3. The new version of Toast allows you to Author BluRay DVDs and you may be able to play them on a BluRay player. You can also play them on your Mac Screen if you have the display resolution set high enough. A 1920x1080 will take up most, if not all, of your computer screen.
As for the Toast BluRay option: It is not practical for me to buy a BluRay burner for USB, since these run over $1000. The SATA BluRay burners are around $300, but my iMac does not have an external SATA port. However, with Toast 9, they claim you can make a BluRay-playable disk from a standard DVD. It holds about 20 minutes of high def content. I am going to burn a BluRay disk using the same project rendered in 1920x1080 and 960x540 to see if I can tell the difference.

  • Importing iMovie-created movies back into iMovie

Hi - new here to to the forums; I have had a Mac for less than a year.
I have created many projects in iMovie and exported the files using "share...export movie" creating m4v files. I now want to string several of those exported movies together into one continuous movie. The first way I could easily think of to do that was just to import my final created movies back into an event and piece them together in a project how I want (there may be a better way - I'm open to suggestions).
The problem is that not all of my iMovie-created movies are being recognized for importing by iMovie. I think I have determined the problem, but I don't know how to fix it: the codec for the ones that will import says "H.264, AAC" but the ones that won't import says "H.264, AAC, Text". I have no idea what I did differently to have the codec include "Text" in some but not others, and no idea what to do to fix it.
    Solutions? Thanks in advance...

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
If you simply wish to join your movies together, you might be better doing this in Quicktime. However if you want to edit further such as applying transitions/titles etc between the movies you would need to use imovie.
If you have the original projects in imovie, it would be better if you re-exported them as full quality AIC video and used this to assemble a new movie in imovie. If this is not possible you can remove the text tracks that are causing you the import problem using the properties window in Quicktime pro.

  • Does iMovie'08 import 1920 x 1080 at 1440 x 1080

After some thought the subject (Sony HDR SR11 resolution) of my last post yesterday may include all HD camcorders with 1920 x 1080 resolution. when iMovie'08 imports the files they are saved as quicktime movies. When played in quicktime and the details looked at in Movie Inspector (quicktime/window/show movie inspector) the format is shown as Apple Intermediate Codec 1440 x 1080,
    Does iMovie'08 import 1920 x 1080 at 1440 x 1080 and then output it at 1920 x 1080 ?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Look at this very interesting link about H.264 CODEC and web compression:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/qt_h-264_moviesfcp.html
As WEB involves many compression and smaller frame sizes, the quality will be on par for both formats.
iDVD will accept HD sequences movies from FCE but it will convert them to standard definition as it cannot output (authoring and burning) high def blu-ray DVD.
Look at this link (altough you don't have ProRes codec with FCE package...) about HDV limitation for DVD usage:

  • Where does iMovie save the movie file?

I have imported my video and I want to get to the folder without opening iMovie. Which folder does iMovie put the raw footage into?
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Brian,
You also need to know that when you see your iMovie project inside the HD Movie folder, you can't simply double-click the project icon and see all of your assets. You need to hold the Apple button while single-clicking on the icon, then choose "Show Assets" to see your media, the QT reference movie, etc.

  • Movies Imported from iMovies to iTunes impossible to rename

    Hi,
I want to watch my movies from Front Row. This application goes to the Movies section in iTunes to access the files that I've imported to iTunes from my iMovie folder. So far so good.
However, because when I "add to library" in iTunes a movie that I've made in iMovies the movie is imported as "small" or "medium" it remains tagged as that in the iTunes movie library.
When I look for movies via Front Row I get a load of movies titled small or medium. Is their any way to rename the files in iTunes? In iTunes you can't do that - or I don't know how. I tried to rename the files by first having them open in Finder (which does allow you to rename them) but then Front Row doesn't see any content in the file and won't replay a renamed movie !!!
    Can anyone help ?
    Thanks.

when i import from my video camera into imovie the clips look tall and thin. tried different imports like full size or large have imported both sd and hd but seem to make no difference everything seems to run ok including sound. whats going on?

    Hi Brad,
when you use Streamclip to convert media, use the same name for the exported file (only with different extension). Then make a shell script calling
    touch -r origFileName.mp2 newFileName.mov
This will copy the exact time and date from origFileName.mp2 to newFileName.mov
The script may look like this (save the file, give an exec permission to it and call it in the right directory):
    #!/bin/bash
    for i in `ls *.mp2`; do
    NEWNAME=$(ls "$i" | sed -e 's/mp2/mov/')
    touch -r $i $NEWNAME
    done
You may need to adapt the extension names used (in the example above .mp2 is input file to get the date/time stamp from and .mov is the output file to stamp.
    Have fun and cheers

  • How does one transfer from imovie to fce without loss of quality. Using a panasonic hdc-tm15 full hd 1920x1080

I am capturing my footage on a Panasonic hdc-tm15 full hd 1920x1080 avchd. The format recorded is not compatible with fce so i have to import to imovie first. what export settings do i need to use to ensure i dont lose quality when going from imovie to fce?

It is suggested to output MOV with AIC codec to keep the raw video quality at max.
Output like this: Share->Export Using QuickTime..
In pop-up windows, click Options->in Moive Settings pop-up window, click Settings button->In Compression Type box, choose Apple Intermediate Codec
    Good luck.

  • IMovie doesn't import all movies from iPhoto - at least one solution

I noticed that iMovie 08 imported my movies from iPhoto, but strangely not all of them. A quick search of the support forums indicated many others were having the same issue.
After comparing file attributes of movies that were importing successfully into iMovie versus movies that didn't show up, I found that a rogue character ("&") was preventing iMovie from importing the file properly.
Renaming the title in iPhoto does not resolve the issue, since the file name (in Finder) remains the same. However, if I make a copy of that file outside of the iPhoto Library, rename it in Finder, then re-import it back into iPhoto, then iMovie will see it. I didn't rename the movie file inside of the iPhoto Library for fear of corrupting the library structure.
I found this to work at least with my .avi files. I still have the same issue as everyone else with iMovie not importing .mpg files that play properly in iPhoto.

Good thinking! The only way to change the filename in iPhoto is to export the movie file, import it back in, copy over comments, keywords from the old to the new movie, and then delete the old movie.

  • Does iMovie Deinterlace 60i Footage On Import?

Recently we had to use iMovie to import some of our HD 60i footage. I noticed that after importing the clips that all the footage appeared to have been deinterlaced automatically upon import. Has anyone else noticed this?

Did import at FULL or LARGE?
    Did you OPTIMIZE?
Did you add any scaling FX like Swap?
You can use 1080i with no loss if you use it correctly.

  • Can't import videos into imovie from movie files

I am having difficulty importing .mov files into iMovie.  When I go to file>import>videos, I can find my .mov files I want to move to iMovie.  It says it is converting.  The files show up in my iMovie folders in Finder but no thumbnails are showing up in iMovie.  Any suggestions?

The audio codec looks fine. The video codec is h.264 which is usually good for iMovie, but there can be variants that iMovie cannot handle. Another interesting thing about the h.264 is that it is anamorphic, which means it stores as 1440x1080, but simulates 1920x1080 by using rectangular pixels.
If I were trying to make this work, I would try converting it using a free tool called MPEG Streamclip, available here. I use the Beta version. http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Drag your clip into MPEG Streamclip. Then click FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. For Compression, choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Leave the audio codec unchanged.
    For Frame size, choose 1920x1080.
Check Interlaced Scaling, and for Field Dominance use Upper Field First, but if it looks bad, you can try checking "Deinterlace Video".
Click Make Movie. Give it a name and store it where you can find it.
Now try importing into iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.

  • What does iMovie (09) do when I select "Export Movie"?

I can't believe this isn't an FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I love iMovie but, as many people realize quickly, part of what makes iMovie so simple to use is that it assumes certain things so that the endusers don't have to worry about them.
Well, I guess "Export Movie" is one of those, but I'm curious - what does iMovie do with my video when I use that option? I realize, for example, that "Export with Quicktime" allows me to select quite a few settings for the export, but that's not the case for iMovie, except for being able to select the exported movie resolution.
What other settings does iMovie assume?

Thanks, everyone! I apologize for being unintentionally vague. To take a step back, my source is video shot with a Canon HF200 in FXP mode which records in 1920x1080 resolution.
The root of my question is curiosity around what iMovie does to my video when I'm burning to DVD, and specifically, I noticed that there's a difference in the quality of the video when I do "Share to iDVD" versus "Export Movie" (then dragging the project into my iDVD template).
I had added some text titles to parts of my video and noticed the "Share to iDVD" caused the text to be more "jaggy". Using "Export Movie" appeared to create DVDs that didn't look jaggy, so naturally, I thought "Export Movie" was the better way to burn DVDs, which then started making me wonder what magic happens when that option is chosen.
Subsequent to my posting this question, I then ran into this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2214292&tstart=90 and learned that iMovie drops half the lines in a frame when exporting.
    - Is this what was happening when I use "Share to iDVD"? Was iMovie dropping half the lines which caused my video to look jaggy? Pictures of the videos below. In these pictures, the DVD was being played by a progressive scan DVD player on an LCD TV (if that makes a difference).

    http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i211/joelq/DSC_1680.jpg
    - I got even more confused when I read that iMovie only does this when exporting to 960x540 or smaller. :-/ If that's the case, then is "Export Movie" exporting to a larger resolution which explains why the video quality seemed better, i.e., the video didn't appear jaggy?
    - And finally, when shooting 1920x1080 60i video, what's the best export process to get the best quality DVDs? Is this possible with iMovie 09 (or even HD)? Or do I need to upgrade to FCE? (Or should I just invest in the eBook :-)?)
    Thanks everyone!

  • IMovie won't import MPEG movies from Sony Handycam

My Sony Handycam DCR-SR45 is connected to my Macbook pro via USB. After clicking iMovie's File Import, I can see the "No Name" device as well as the various mpg files that I want to import. The mpg files correctly show the date created, file size, etc. However, the mpg files are grayed-out and I cannot select them to import. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I have exactly the same issue.  I think that iMovie must have a limitation on the length of the clip you can import.  My 45 minute clip will play with VLC, but won't import inot imovie.
