Does this VoIP strategy make sense?

I have a VoIP gateway that is marking packets with DiffServ CS1 and CS2 levels. These packets first hit an internal router that has a GRE/IPSec transport mode tunnel to another router on the public Internet. The internal router uses its FastEthernet port to connect to a second in-house router that has a T1 connection to the Internet. In order to setup some QoS I would like do the following:
1) On the internal router I am not going to setup any actual QoS policies but I want to use the "qos pre-classify" commands on the crypto map and the tunnel interface in order preserve the DCSP info on the IPSec encrypted packets that will be processed by the Internet router
2) On the Internet router I will setup a policy that matches DCSP packets and assigns them to a LLQ using the "priority" command.
Since the IPSec tunnel also carries non-VoIP traffic my objective here is to prioritize only IPSec packets that have voice. Non-voice IPSec and all other traffic will be treated in best-effort mode.
Does my plan make sense?
Thanks,
Diego

Since IOS 11.3T, the TOS bits of the IP header is copied automatically to the TOS bits of the GRE header. However, there was a problem. While the subsequent routers could use this info in the TOS field of the GRE header, the router doing this initial copying itself was unable to prioritize based on the TOS bits. The 'qos pre-classify' command solves this problem. With the command configured, the packets will be correctly classified and the qos policy applied on the headend router too.
The information ultimately copied into the TOS bit of the new header, mirrors the TOS bit in the original header. Also, the TOS bit is copied regardless of the 'qos pre-classify' command.

    hi, im tinkering with mpeg streamclip and its giving me problems because it won't open my ripped dvd files from my desktop. It keeps giving me the same message "no VOB files can be found". Can anyone help me, this doesn't make sense. I also found online that you need Apple Mpeg-2 playback component in order to use mpeg streamclip. Even though I have OS X Lion, should I download the add-on?

    You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    (unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
    Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
    For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
    Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
    No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
    Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
    The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
    To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
    The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Does a singleton thread make sense?

    I'm new to developing with threads and the project I'm on has some Thread classes that are implemented as singletons.
    Does this make sense to do? It seems like from what I'm seeing (since thread.stop() is deprecated) that we should start a thread going and just let it finish. When I tried working with this thread, it would never finish since it was holding one to an instance of itself. (thread.isAlive() always returned true even after the run() method finished)
    Another developer I work with suggested looking into ThreadGroup instead of using a singleton. Is this the proper way to ensure a limited number of threads are started?
    The reason we only want one of these threads running at once is because they are very processing intensive.
    Thanks!

  • JPA persistence tier / does two different layers make sense ?

    I'm building a little application to illustrate performance issues we are encountering in our production system.
    I will create a proof of concept a change we think it will resolve our problems. The change consist in building a specific lighter ejb layer with read only entities only with necessary attributes and relationships into to show data for selection and navigation into the application.
    Does make any sense to put all this new ejbs in a different persistence model the one that already exists ?
    What is the consequence to have two persistence model instead one for the project ?
    My preference is to build two different layers (and related persistence model) and I think it is a good idea to separate the persistence layer because they have two different use, one for showing data and for navigation, one as a really persistence layer.
    But i don't know what are the consequences ?

  • Does this really even make a difference?

    Does it really upscale the picture quality when you turn off the SD override under options or select stretch? I notice a slight difference when turning it off the picture looks a bit better but also there is alot less screen usage and only a fraction of the screen gets used with those black side bars that look a bit like viewing something in wide screen on the sides. Stretch varies greatly it says that the single is at 720p (my native resolution) but some things actually look worse than they would if I simply left them in 480I or 480p.

    NEVER use "Stretch".  As Justin said, it merely distorts the picture.  People should really stop thinking that black bars (top or sides) mean that just because an image does not fill the screen, the TV is not being fully utilized.  The wider screen of your TV is a compromise (approx 1.75:1 ratio), but does not actually serve ANY of the major broadcast ratios.  (1.33:1, 1.85.:1, and 2.35:1)
    Older TV programming (and movies filmed before 1955 or so) have a ratio of 1.33:1 (aa different ration than the 16X9 ratio of your TV screen), so bars on the side are necessary to watch the programming in the way it was intended.  Widescreen movies are 2.35:1, again wider than your TV's ratio, so bars are needed at the top and bottom to see the complete image. Some channels, like HBO and EPIX, elimanate the bars by eliminating at least one-third (or more!) of the picture! And yet, even though  that terrible practice fills your TV screen, sharpness and detail is also lost when those channels do that (as any side-by-side comparison shows.), which, to my mind, defeats the purpose of HD..
    Also,, using Stretch,  the TV is overscanning, therefore softening the image as you lose 1:1 pixel mapping of most HDTVs.
    In a nutshell,  leave the override on OFF. Using artificial means to eliminate black bars actually lessens the quality of the image. (How noticable it is usually depends on the size of the TV and viewing distance.)  But even then, we still have to deal with some channels ruining HD, like HBO/EPIX/STARZ cropping,  or IFC-HD which shows movies in a distorted "stretch" mode already! Absolutely unwatchable. No need to make matters worse in those cases!

  • Does my boolean logic make sense?

    Hello. I am currently working on a linked list assignment, but for some reason my boolean doesn't seem to do what I want it to do. can someone take a look to see why I am getting a black screen?
    public boolean addEmployee(Employee newEmployee) //if there is fresh meat coming, returns true. I think something's wrong here
          EmployeeNode previous = search(newEmployee);
          EmployeeNode present= setPresent(previous);
          EmployeeNode add = new EmployeeNode();
              boolean freshMeat = false;
              add.data = new Employee(newEmployee);
              while((present!=null)&&(present.data.compareTo(newEmployee)<0))
              {     previous = present;
                   add.link = present;
                   present = add;
                    System.out.println("present is: "+present.data);
                    System.out.println("previous is: "+previous.data);
                   freshMeat = true;
              return freshMeat;
       }if I remove the while loop and the condition, it will display everything that I am adding to it:
    public boolean addEmployee(Employee newEmployee) //if there is fresh meat coming, returns true. I think something's wrong here
          EmployeeNode previous = search(newEmployee);
          EmployeeNode present= setPresent(previous);
          EmployeeNode add = new EmployeeNode();

              add.link = present;
              present = add;
              System.out.println("present is:" + present.data);
              freshMeat = true;
              return freshMeat;
       }why can't I have my previous.data display if i type it into SOPLN?

    I did a couple of linkedlist assignments not long ago, of which one is employee related.
    I thought that the method names are a bit ambigous to me, and it will definitely help if you can outline your algo.
    Putting your while condition to words, i have, if (current node exists) AND (newEmployee is "bigger" than the employee data in the current node) perform loop content. I am not sure if that is what you want.
    Furthermore, I am not sure if you are traversing forward or backward, or if you are traversing your list at all in your while loop.
    if your add.link refers to to next node in the list, shouldn't you do something like
    previous = present;
    present = add.link;
    ....again, it will greatly help if you are provide more info on what exactly are you trying to do.

  • HELP. TYING TO MAKE SENSE OF A SCHEDULE

    Hi im creating a following tournement schedule and the following code is used to generate fizxtures. However i am unsure as to how this happens and what each line actually does. I have commented each line could someone please advise if this is correct and when i try to create the matchups, how does this whole procedure work. For example, when it gets to i=3 and j=2 when 4 teams are participating, then the fixture gets generated 2 vs 5th team which cannot happen. i do not understand how this accompanies it. Thank you ever so much
    bye at -1 means team has no bye
    public void League()
              int TotalParticipants= List.size(), NoOfGames = TotalParticipants*(TotalParticipants-1)/2, tmp;
              bye = -1;
              game = new int[NoOfGames][3];
              Team tmpTeam; //tmpteam stores team
         for(int i = 1; i < TotalParticipants; i++)
              for(int j = 0; j < TotalParticipants-i; j++) //for j=1, 0<no of teams-1,I+1..
                        tmp = (i-1)*TotalParticipants-i*(i-1)/2+j; //tmp value
                        if( (tmp/5 +1) % 2 == 1)
                             tmpTeam = ((Team)List.get(j)); //tmpteam = teamlist get team j
                             tmpTeam.setHomeGames(tmpTeam.getHome()+1);  //tmpteam calls homegames method and adds one
                             game[tmp][0] = tmpTeam.getNum(); //gets number of team
                             tmpTeam = ((Team)List.get(j+i)); //tmpteam = teamlist get team j+i
                             tmpTeam.setAwayGames(tmpTeam.getAway()+1); //tmpteam calls awaygames method and adds one
                             game[tmp][1] = ((Team)List.get(j+i)).getNum(); //gets number of team
                        else
                             tmpTeam = ((Team)List.get(j+i)); //tmpteam = teamlist get team j+i
                             tmpTeam.setHomeGames(tmpTeam.getHome()+1); //tmpteam calls homegames method and adds one
                             game[tmp][0] = tmpTeam.getNum(); //gets number of team
                             tmpTeam = ((Team)List.get(j)); //tmpteam = teamlist get team j
                             tmpTeam.setAwayGames(tmpTeam.getAway()+1); //tmpteam calls awaygames method and adds one
                             game[tmp][1] = ((Team)List.get(j)).getNum(); //gets number of team
                        game[tmp][2] = -1; //sets bye
         }

    Ok Thank you mate, Firstly, this generates the games in a league format, who plays who.
    With this algorithm, everyone will play each other only once. I have commented each line out to try and make sense
    So for example if 3 teams were entered.
    totalparticipants would = 3
    noofgames= 3
    so as i = 1, i<3
    j=0 j<2
    this now runs creating 2 fixtures
    0vs1
    1vs2
    i increases by 1
    i=2 i<3
    j=0 j<2
    now surely the last 2 fixtues would be created, but this would not make sense as it would generate
    4 games and one of these would be wrong
    it would get
    0vs2
    1vs3 .... which is wrong. sorry if its confusing :S
    How does this system accompany this.does
    it just miss out the value. and for team entrants with 5 in size, there are repeat games. It misses these 2.
    and why use these forumulaes. is it some scheduling algorithm. couldnt find info on it anywhere
    tmp = (i-1)*TotalParticipants-i*(i-1)/2+j; //tmp value
    if( (tmp/5 +1) % 2 == 1)

  • Trial to full boxed version...does this sound right?

    I am currently using the trial version of Aperture and purchased a box version of it new. I called Apple support to see how to go about upgrading to the purchased version and he told me to NOT just enter the serial number that came with the box version, but to put in the disk and just install over the trial. This dosen't make sense to me, as the trial is the current 1.5.3 version and the box is 1.5. I would be going backwards in versions.
    Anybody upgrade from trial to box? Can the serial number only be used with the software disk that comes with it?
    Thanks for any help!
    15.4", 2.16 MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo 2   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2 GB RAM

    I would expect you could just enter the serial # and it would work fine.
    The 'fly in the ointment' is probably upgrading via software update. I say this because software update uses a few things to determine what you're running, and among them are the package (.pkg) files in /Library/Receipts. If you start with the trial version, your package file is probably called ApertureTrial.pkg. If you start with the boxed copy of Aperture, your package file is called Aperture.pkg. If for some reason Apple releases an update for the "boxed copy" version that is different to or not available for the trial version, it's likely Software Update will not work.
    If it were me I would delete Aperture from /Applications, delete ApertureTrial.pkg (and any ApertureXXXUpdate.pkg files) from /Library/Receipts, install 1.5 from your media, and then run Software Update to get it to 1.5.3. Once you fire it up all should be as you left it, as your preference files will still be there, etc. Takes maybe an extra 10 minutes at the start but long term it will stop you from getting in situations where everyone is confused as you're in an "outlier" configuration.

  • CS4 Timeline times don't make sense.

    Hi,
      I'm working on a sequence that is 00;29;29;20  in length. To me that's 29 minutes and 29 seconds.  Those numbers are shown in yellow on the lower left side of the monitor.  Those same numbers are also shown in yellow just above and to the left of the timeline.  Those times agree with my timeline and the playback time.
    Now then, and this doesn't make sense to me.......  On the lower right side, and just below the monitor, the white numbers I see  show  00;01;50;07  .  Isn't that supposed to be the total time for the sequence?
    That kind of worries me that only 1 minute and 50 seconds are in the sequence.  I did render the entire sequence.
    Help please.              Tom B.

    Great news, and glad that we could help.
    Jim lists a very good point, and one that I had not contemplated. Besides the WAB, one can set In & Out Points on a Timeline. The bar in the Timeline Ruler then changes density. This is NOT the WAB, but near it. This process has several uses, but most people set those In & Out Points by mistake, usually by hitting the I (eye key), or the O (oh key), when the CTI/Playhead is somewhere other than the 00;00;00;00 point, or the very end of the Timeline. Note: those keystrokes might change, depending on the version of PrPro one is using - but I do not think so). Usually, one then comes to the forum with a question like, "why is the bar above my Timeline changing colors?" or "why can I not Export my full Timeline, though I have the WAB covering the whole thing?"
    Good luck, and thanks to Jim for pointing that out too.

    See if you can open the files now without opening on the iPhone first.

  • Currently my internal drive is full due to Aperture. I want to work with Aperture from a external drive verses my internal drive. In addition, I want to back-up my work to another external drive. Is this easily done? Does this make sense? Pros / Cons...

    Currently my internal drive is out of space due to my Aperture files. I want to place Aperture on a external drive to work from verses in intnal drive. In addition, I want to back-up all my work to another external for safe keeping. Once I move aperture to the external, I want to delete it off my internal drive. Does this make sense to do? Pros / Cons....

    It is common for people to move their Aperture, iPhoto, iTunes etc. files to an external drive when those files become too large to conveniently keep on the internal drive.
    The best approach is probably to keep the applications (iPhoto, Aperture etc.) where they are now, but move the files (photos, music, videos etc.) to the external drive.
    You should set up a process to regularly backup all the files from both the internal drive as well as the external drive you'll be using. Here are two approaches:
    (1) Use Time Machine. You can configure Time Machine so that it backs up both the internal drive as well as the external drive, all to a third separate backup drive. This is done via the Options button in the Time Machine preference pane.
    (2) You can use a "cloning" program, such as SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, to make complete copies of files on your internal drive and that external drive. One way to do this is to use a very large disk for the backups, and to partition it into two backup drives, making one dedicated to the internal, the other dedicated to the external.
    Two separate types of backups are recommended. I use both (1) and (2) above, and I disconnect and shut down the clone type backups when not being used. That way a power failure or surge that might destroy the original disk(s) plus the Time Machine backup(s) would still not damage the backups made under (2).
    Don't delete your original Aperture files until you have verified that they are working properly from the external drive AND you have made a backup of them.
