Does too many extents afftect database performance?

Hi gurus
There are some tablespaces created with "UNIFORM SIZE 1M" which should be created "SYSTEM" . The database version is 10g. I worry about that too much extents will affect the database performance even
availability cause extent management overhead. Do i need to recreate these tablespace with "SYSTEM" allocation type or just do nothing? Thank u for your reply!!

"SYSTEM" is for Tablespaces created with AUTOALLOCATE. Here you would have extents sizes beginning at 64K and then growing to 1M, 8M and 64M.
With "UNIFORM 1M" all your extents are 1M in size. If you have tables/indexes/partitions growing into the tens of GBs in size, you would have extent counts of tens of thousands. That, in itself, is not an issue.
"extent management overhead" that you refer to is actually reduced from DMT to LMT. Within LMT, the difference between "UNIFORM 1M" and "AUTOALLOCATE" may not be noticeable unless you have a particular patten of a very large number of DROP and TRUNCATEs being executed frequently. In that case, assuming that such DROP and TRUNCATEs are for small "temporary" tables, "UNIFORM 1M" may actually be better than AUTOALOCATE, except that you would be "wasting" some disk space (as the former would use 1M extents while the latter would use 64K extents for the first MB).
If you think of "AUTOALLOCATE"s 8M and 64M extents for very large tables, you might actually be better of using UNIFORM 32M or UNIFORM 64M for specific tablespaces and tables. Just be careful not to put relatively small tables into such tablespaces !

  • Tablespace with too many extents are evil for performance

    I think the tablespace with too many extents are not bad for performance after introduction of LMT tablespace?? May be true with DMT tablespace(earlier versions). This is just observation after reading the LMT vs DMT tablespaces.
    Experts - Please comment on your thoughts.

    Indeed, I work in an environment where there is over 50 databases to be administered and so we have lots of DBAs interacting with each other.
    I'm stunned by this myth of "reorganization". Most of the DBAs move tables + rebuild indexes regularly generating huge redo  on a monthly basis. Also provoking indexes to do all the splits again generating even more redo. They claim "it helps performance a lot" however not one is able to quantify and quite justify it other than "less extents less I/O, good". Even when I bring up the existence of shrink they say "do not like it, prefer the classic move". People really have a way of holding on to their good ol' practices of Oracle 8i.
    For full table scans (which should never be done on a OLTP scenario) this extent issue would be relevant IF data on the table is the victim of large deles and Oracle hasn't re-used that space yet. If your multiblock reads is a multiple of your extent size, than there won't be any overhead of I/O call, no matter the number of your extents. For OLTP this is not relevant because Oracle will access the table via ROWID.
    I rarely have ever seen an index benefit from a rebuild significantly. In my experience what people often understand as "index fragmentation" is often just an unoptimized execution plan due to cardinality issues where oracle ends up fetching a large percentage of the table via single reads on that index.

  • Does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

    does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

    31 apps is nothing. I have 130 apps XD. Then again, I'm using an iPhone 4S which has more RAM compared to the 3GS. RAM is everything when it comes to speed. To use the app switcher, press the home button twice quickly and a list of your recently opened apps will appear. Then hold down on any app and all the apps will go to wiggle mode (like they do when you're deleting apps. Now, simply tap on the red icon that appears at the top left corner of any app you don't want running in the background. This will free up RAM and should make your phone faster.

  • What does too many http redirects mean and how do I fix it

    Does anyone know what the **** "Too many http redirects" means, and how the **** do I fix it ??

    500 errors in the HTTP cycle
    Any client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) goes through the following cycle when it communicates with the Web server:
    Obtain an IP address from the IP name of the site (the site URL without the leading 'http://'). This lookup (conversion of IP name to IP address) is provided by domain name servers (DNSs).
    Open an IP socket connection to that IP address.
    Write an HTTP data stream through that socket.
    Receive an HTTP data stream back from the Web server in response. This data stream contains status codes whose values are determined by the HTTP protocol. Parse this data stream for status codes and other useful information.
    This error occurs in the final step above when the client receives an HTTP status code that it recognises as '500'. Frank Vipond. September 2010.
    Fixing 500 errors - general
    This error can only be resolved by fixes to the Web server software. It is not a client-side problem. It is up to the operators of the Web server site to locate and analyse the logs which should give further information about the error.
    Fixing 500 errors - CheckUpDown
    Please contact us (email preferred) whenever you encounter 500 errors on your CheckUpDown account. We then have to liaise with your ISP and the vendor of the Web server software so they can trace the exact reason for the error. Correcting the error may require recoding program logic for the Web server software, which could take some time.

  • Does recompiling procedure improve the database performance???????

    One of my friends working on mssql told me that recreating of procedures could improve the database performance. If you have created the procedure and recreated it after insertion of huge volume of data.
    Is it true. If so how?

    I think so too but he said that in his microsoft certified course told that it could improve the performance.
    He told me that the select statements prevously used uses the old statistic but after recreating it uses the new statistic.

  • Does having too many project effect FCPX performance?

    I have 100 - 150 projects
    Selecting a project takes about 5 - 10 seconds
    Dragging into folder takes a similar time
    Does having that number of projects effect the performance?
    When loading up, it reads all project names and checks links (I think)
    So I'm guessing there HAS to be some sort of performance hit?
    Thanks

    james, thanks for the reply
    currently i'm working off the hard drive on my macbook pro
    the 'events' what are these? are they simply pointers to where the media is stored?
    similar with 'projects' - assuming there are a few more parameters stored for specific settings?
    apart from rendering files, these files all should be light weight?
    i read that link u gave. i'm now going to move events and project folders as mentioned
    Event Manager X: is it worth getting?
    i read the reviews. it doesnt say whether or not u can specify where the files are hidden to - lets say you want to keep on the current drive - or maybe move to an external drive
    some reviews have complained about the lack of response from buyers - doesnt sound too good
    EDIT: i've moved events and projects. i closed fcpx and then started again. the event and project names are still there
    what am i doing wrong?
    EDIT: lets say i move events called abc. let's say i have a projects folder called xyz which used media in abc. i move xyz this as well
    12 months, i need abc and xyz - but i've forgetton how they are connected and i have 100's of project files and events i have taken offline
    what happens then?
    thanks

  • Does Too Many Applications Effect Phone

    Hello! First time poster. Great board. I have about five pages of applications on my iPhone 3G. Does having this many apps slow my phone down or cause any negative effects on the performance of my phone?
    Thanks!
    Tom

    Thanks a lot! Is there a list anywhere of which apps are coded poorly? I was just curious as I deleted some apps with the idea that it might help me out some. My phone is not much slower, but I have noticed it seems to be a bit shakier.

  • Too many extents for table on locally managed uniform ASSM tablespace

    Running Oracle 9.2.0.8 on solaris 10, Enterprise edition.
    Tablespace configuration:
    select extent_management, allocation_type, segment_space_management, block_size, initial_extent, next_extent
    from dba_tablespaces
    where tablespace_name = 'PCLARGE';
    LOCAL UNIFORM AUTO 8192 2097152 2097152
    A nightly peoplesoft SQR job inserts and updates the problem table. The job has been in place without change for four years. During that time, the database moved from 8i to 9i, and the tablespace parameters moved to uniform local ASSM. The job selects from a 70 million row table and then updates the target summary table.
    Can somebody help me understand why the number of extents would grow way out of proportion to the number of rows?
    When the row count was 9807427, this table had 233 extents.
    Row count 10759033, table had 501 extents.
    Row count 10764665, table has 1967 extents.
    The table is not analyzed since the system is using RULE. DBMS_SPACE.SPACE_USAGE indicates no extents above the high water mark. Running SELECT name,value FROM v$sysstat WHERE name like '%table%' seems to indicate that chained rows are not a factor, since the row with name "table fetch continued row" returns a small amount of rows.
    Any ideas? Is it possible there is a bug with ASSM that is causing this?
    Unfortunately I don't have detailed extent history information after each nightly run. I just have the 3 data points above.

    Hi Hemant,
    Thanks for your reply! No parallelism was involved in the SQR script.
    Oracle support has pointed me to Metalink Note:469985.1: Sudden Increase in Unformatted Blocks. This behavior matches our symptoms. My company is going to pursue a backport, but in the meantime we may need to move data into tablespaces without ASSM.
    Best regards,
    Ben

  • Upgraded too many times???

    i have recently upgraded my itunes to version 6 or whatever is the latest. after i had done this i decided to upgrade the software on the computer using the 'software update' option. little did i know, the updater updated my itunes. this is a second update, but two different ways. my question is, is it possible to update a program too many times and it getting corrupted or doing too many things? and when a program is updated where does the old version go? does it get stored or thrown out (i am concerned that if the old versions are stored that it would just take up space)?

    When Software Update runs, it will only offer newer versions of installed software.
    This normally does not corrupt the system or applications.
    Sometimes applications are updated and sometimes completely replaced.
    Old files are always deleted, so they don't take precious HD space.
    Did you encounter problems with the iTunes update?
    It's a good habit to always run Disk Utility and perform a 'Repair Disk Permissions' before and after installing/updating software.
    This routine maintenance prevents most troubles.

    The Oracle Performance and Tuning class is very good at least
    when I took it around 2 years ago.
    Oracle Performance Tuning by Mark Curry and Peter Corrigan is
    good but is probably too deep for someone new in Oracle. (It's
    too deep for me most of the time since I've worked with Oracle
    for 2.5 years now)
    I could also send you a paper that gives a fairly good
    explanation on use of V$SESSION_WAIT, V$SESSION_EVENT, and
    V$SYSTEM_WAIT. V$SESSION_WAIT tells you what application is
    wating and what is the event wait occuring.
    Let me know if you want it.

  • Too many functions on discoverer

    Hi all,
    I'm creating a New report under discoverer desktop, and I'm having a problem.
    this report has 7 functions. some of them looks for a Max or Min on a audit table and the others performs different calculations with dates (e.g (01-JAn-2009 15:02:09) - (15-Feb-2009 10:56:30)). All of the functions works with internal queries.
    Currently the report takes 2 minutes to display the results.
    The problem is that now I have to add another function that performs a Count(*) from the same audit table (with a where condition), and when I add it, the report never retrieves the results. Is taking at least 20 minutes to run (and does't finish)
    what is the best practice under discov. Is it possible that too many Functions affect the performance of the report?
    As other issue:
    Is there anyway to use as a parameter of a function, the result of an other function used under the same report?
    lets say, I have function1 on the report and I need tu use the result diplay by that function as a parameter for function2
    Thanx a lot...
    Belen

    I don't fully understand your setup but if you are querying the same table over and over is it possible to set up a custom folder that will query the table once and return all of the required values?
    You could add calculated columns and filters as required.
    In this example the min and max dates are looking at rows 2-4 and the count is looking at rows 4-5.
    var START_DATE DATE
    var END_DATE DATE
    var MIN_ID VARCHAR2
    var MAX_ID VARCHAR2
    BEGIN
       :START_DATE := trunc(SYSDATE) + 2/24;
       :END_DATE := trunc(SYSDATE) + 4/24;
       :MIN_ID := 4;
       :MAX_ID := 5;
    END;
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed
    WITH audit_table AS (
       SELECT 1 t_id, 100 val, trunc(SYSDATE) + 1/24 dt FROM dual UNION ALL

       SELECT 4 t_id, 400 val, trunc(SYSDATE) + 4/24 dt FROM dual UNION ALL

    hi all,
    does loading too many classes into jvm will slow down performance. Our application is CPU bound, if we use any framework we need to load all the classes related to that framework in JVM. Does this have any effect on the performance of the JVM.
    thanks and regards,

    does loading many classes into jvm slow down performance.It will increase the time it takes for the JVM to load your application.
    Our application is CPU boundThe time it takes the JVM to load your application is not likely to be an issue for you then.
