Domain Joined SQL Azure DB Servers

Hi,
Is it possible to have domain joined SQL Azure servers or Database so that we can use logins based on domain joint ?
Thanks

Hi
SQL Azure currently does not support windows auth and it only supports sql auth where user should provide username and password all the time:

  • Cannot connect to SQL Azure by allowing Domain Name in Firewall

*.database.windows.net:1433/tcp is getting resolved as IP address in corporate firewall but the corporate firewall is configured to allow only domain names. Is there a way to connect to SQL Azure without domain name getting resolved into IP.
All the http traffic are allowed by firewall for blobs, queues and tables.

    Hello,
Did you means that you connect to the SQL database with IP address? If I understand correctly, you can not rely on the IP address when connect to Windows Azure SQL database.
SQL database is hosted on a virtual machine at the Microsoft datacenter and shared resource with other databases. Static IP addresses are not supported on Windows Azure virtual machines, it is use dynamic address.
What's more, one SQL Database keep at least three SQL Server databases replica that are distributed across multiple physical servers in a single data center and automatic cluster failover when a hardware fails on one server. In that case, the real IP that
is behind server might change in any moment.

  • DPM 2010 (Domain A), Sharepoint 2010 (Domain A), SQL Server 2008 R2 (Domain B): Protection Group Problem SQL named is in wrong domain format.

    Good Evening,
So I have 3 Servers in all, with the following configurations:
    Server1: DPM2010.contoso.com (Domain A)
    Server2: Sharepoint2010WFE.contoso.com (Domain A)
    Server3: Sharepoint2010DB.contoso.net (Domain B)
I have prepared sharepoint2010wfe.contoso.com appropriatly by installing the DPM Agent, running configuresharepoint.exe -enablesharepointprotection & ConfigureSharepoint.exe enableSPSearchProtection.
I have prepared Sharepoint2010db.contoso.net by installing the DPM agent to the server using the manual installation method and creating local user credentials and connecting to the agent through install > attach agent.
In DPM all of agents are healthy so I go over to create the protection profile and I recieve the following error: DPM cannot protect your windows sharepoint services farm until you install agents on the following server: Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com (ID:
    956)
I have already attempted creating an alias on the WFE server for Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com and have it point to Sharepoint2010DB.contoso.net but this did not resolve my issue at all.
Also please keep in mind that pinging Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com is invalid as there is not a valid DNS entry of any kind, Im not even sure where this name is coming from other than some sort of a mashup. Also I am unable to domain join the SQL server
to contoso.com because of licensing costs.
A resolution to this issue woudl be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Deepan,
I run into exactly the same problem with SharePoint 2013 and DPM 2012SP1. SharePoint servers run in domain a, sql 2012 in domain b. We use a SQL alias SharePoint_PROD that is configured with the fqdn of the sql server (sql20.b.com), but DPM resolves it to
sql20.a.com when I try to configure SharePoint protection.  Is there any solution yet?

  • Restrict Outlook Access Only To Domain Joined PCs?

We have contractors that use their employers laptops to access various LAN resources on our network such as access to shared network drives, printers, Remote Desktop and access to our Intranet sites.  They have mailboxes on our Exchange servers and
we would like their mailbox access to be restricted to EAS and OWA, not Outlook unless they are using one of our domain-joined computers.
The main reason for this is to restrict these users from downloading their mailbox contents into into a personal folder.  We can create PST restrictions on our domain-joined PCs via group policy, but these policies would not apply to computers not joined
    to our domain.
Of course we would also like to prevent Outlook access to their mail from their home PCs that they may have installed Outlook on, but we still need seamless remote access to Outlook on domain-joined laptops used remotely.
    How can this be done?

PS -- Andy are you going to MEC ?

  • Can't create a new SQL Azure Standard Tier db

I'm having an issue creating a new sql azure standard tier db. Here's the basic steps I've done to migrate a web tier db.
Register for the sql preview programme
    https://account.windowsazure.com/PreviewFeatures
Perform a db export to blob storage
use the + (new) button to create a new SQL db
    select the import option
    browser to your saved export
hopefully see the new tiers as options in dialog.
The new tiers require a separate server to web. Can create this from the import dialog
I have 2 independent azure accounts, the above process worked for my test account but for the live account where I was also experimenting after success on the test account I hit an issue. I request to create a new server whilst importing. This step seems
to work but then the actual import fails with this msg
"Error encountered during the service operation.
     Could not import package.
Error SQL72014: .Net SqlClient Data Provider: Msg 40823, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Invalid value provided for parameter EDITION. Please provide a value that is valid on server version 1.0.
Error SQL72045: Script execution error. The executed script:
     CREATE DATABASE [$(DatabaseName)] COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
     (EDITION = 'Standard', MAXSIZE = 1 GB)"
Tried a couple of times but no joy. Using the portal I can browse to the new sql server and it looks okay other than the list of ENABLED
RESERVATION SIZES ONLY HAS P1, P2, P3 I'm requesting a standard (s1) db not premium (P1, P2, P3). On my test server I see in this list also S1,
S2. As you can see in the error message I'm requesting Edition = Standard. I get the feeling the newly created server is not accepting standard tier dbs?
Now the server is created if I try an import I see the server in the list of available servers but when I select a tier of Basic or Standard the new server is grayed out, not so if I select Premium or the older Web or Business? Interestingly my current live
sql server shows up as supporting the new premium?
    Thanks
    Wayne

  • Is it possible to create a domain with 2 Foundation 2012 servers ?

    Hello,
I need to install Windows 2012 servers, acting as DHCP servers, each one managing half of the IP range.
There will be less than 5 users registered in this domain.
My question is : can I use 2 Foundation versions (each one being a DC) ?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

number of ways a client can discover your network shares - files and printers - but it depends on what really you are trying to achieve.
If you are using a domain environment and your client computers are domain joined then you can use group policy or login scripts etc to map drives and printers.
you could simply email a share name in a unc format for both file shares and printers and they can click the link.
you could create a batch file which maps a drive
you could create a web page to show users how to connect to the printers using print manager
    you could use network neighbourhood
there are a number of other options too - it really depends on what you want,

  • Non domain-joined Clients (CES/CEP)

    Hello Everyone!
This is my first post to the security forum and it is not an overly familiar tech for me so please be gentle. :)
I am looking at building a lab to test a web based application for a client.  The client has very stringent security requirements and as such have mandated the need for both the web server to be secured using SSL certs and requires the connecting
users to have a certificate.  The infrastructure will be hosted in a central DC in it's own AD forest whilst the users connecting in will have their own AD as they work for different companies.  Each user will have an AD account within the hosted
environment.  My initial thought was to provide public certs for the web servers but my problem was providing certificates to the clients.  Clearly using public certs would be very expensive.  After a bit of research I stumbled across the following:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/05/25/enabling-cep-and-ces-for-enrolling-non-domain-joined-computers-for-certificates.aspx
What I am trying to understand is, will the combination of Certificate services & CES/CEP effectively do away with the need for public certs in this instance?  Can I simply use the internal authority to publish certificates to the web server and
    to the end users?

Yes - I think this is one of the scenarios CES/CEP have been developed for.
End users would have to trust your internal CA and validate the chain, so intermediate CAs should be found via AIA URLs. But since you need user - not computer - certificates this is simpler than described in the article as users do not need to be local
admins to import a root. (But on principle the admin of a user's home AD could restrict this though I have never encountered that.)
You would need to publish the CES/CEP services via a reverse proxy and external users would have to configure the enrollment HTTP URLs and enter their AD credentials in the hosted AD when connecting.
As users have imported your CA certificate they will also trust the web server's certificate issued from the same CA.

  • Use SQL Azure with local web app?

    Hello all-
I have a web app running on a local-ish (our Data Center) server which runs ColdFusion and SQL Server on the same physical hardware.  The load for the app is not too great, so running both services on the same box is not problem.
I need to upgrade SQL Server, and I would prefer not to put more resources onto our local servers if possible.  Essentially, I would like to move to the cloud.  BUT at this point I don't want to move my code to the cloud due to file storage and
    a few other issues.
Is it feasible to use SQL Azure as my datasource for my local web app?  I am at a top-tier University on the west coast, and our connection speeds are about as good as you can possibly get.
I don't mind a minor slowdown.  For instance, if the round-trip takes 30 milliseconds, I won't be sweating that.  But I'd rather not have a relatively snappy app turn into something agonizing for users.
Also, we have a perimeter firewall on campus which normally blocks all SQL Server traffic.  Is it possible to change the port that SQL Azure uses?
    Any guidance would be appreciated.
    Thanks-
    Karl

    Hello,
At this time I have 4 virtual servers on Azure (2 of them SQL Server instances) on a high availability configuration and it only
cost 13.35 per day. It is very cheap. Incoming traffic is free.
About how to Connect to SQL Azure, the following application may help:
    http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsazure/ASPNET-MVC-connect-with-1f40770f
What is the size of the database?
About the port default port and the organizational firewall, please read the following article:

    Hope this helps.

  • Things to consider when removing from AD domain a SQL Server 2008 which includes Reporting Services

Do any one have a link to a list of things to consider when removing from AD domain a SQL Server 2008 which includes Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services?
I am taking from an Active Directory domain several servers with SQL 2008 and Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services. The server will stay on its own without association to any domain, the server will keep its IP address and
the server will not change names.
I have done some research and I got the basic steps including, removing the user accounts from the domain, changing the services accounts, changing jobs and databases from being owned by users from the domain. But...
Are there other things in Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services internal databases that have an association with the domain AND that will fail after no longer being in the domain?
I've heard of Reporting Services subscriptions failing when the domain user account is no longer there...Are there any other got ya's that any one has encountered?
    Please advice.
Note: I am posting in this forum basically because of what I heard on Reporting Services, but it may be a better idea to post into a more broad forum such as SQL Server Migration section.
    Thanks beforehand

  • Connection between two SQL Azure Databases

We have a requirement to move data (partial data in a table based on policy conditions) between two SQL Azure Databases. Want to know the best possible way to do this.
We are not looking at Data Sync Framework - as this is only a Preview version and we have to use this in an ongoing basis in Production and the volume of data is quite high.
The option that we have currently is to use an on premise stored procedure - that will have two link servers to the source and target SQL Azure Databases and do the data movement in one transaction.
Are there any other better options to do this ? Any pointers will be helpful.

    Hi Kothai Ramanathan,
According to your description, if you just want to moving part of the data from a huge table between two different SQL Server database, you can use
SQL Server replication to sync the part of data via articles. However, in SQL Azure database, it does not support SQL Server replication, if you want to migrate database, as other post, you
can use Data-Tier Application Import and Export or other ways.
In addition, for just moving the part of data,  you can also create two Linked Servers between local SQL Server database and two different SQL azure database. For example, you can get the changed data from the first Linked
Server and saved the data to Local database, then insert these data to the other azure database via the second Linked Server.

  • DNS working intermittently for non-domain joined machines

I have a small single Server 2012 based network, with about 90% windows clients.  DNS is running on the Windows Server 2008 machine, but DHCP is provided via a unix based firewall machine.  Within the DNS configuration I have all of my windows
clients (mostly Windows 8.x clients, but there are a few Windows 7 ones as well) and a few *nix ones as well.  All of the Windows clients are domain joined, except for one machine which is currently running Windows 10 preview, though it was a Windows
7 machine originally.  In the DNS configuration I have a number of statically entered A records, used to give my *nix machines a name on the local network.
When trying to access systems by name (via ping or by other services), there is a very consistent behavior - my domain joined machines are able to resolve all names 100% of the time without any issues.  However, the non-domain joined machines, both
Windows and not, are consistently inconsistent.  To be more precise, when I try to resolve a name it will randomly work and randomly not.  IP setup and configuration looks correct, meaning they have  valid IP, DNS is set to my Windows Server,
default gateway, etc. are all correct.  Pinging external machines (ie google.com, etc.) works 100% of the time, but trying to ping any internal machine is a total crap shoot.  The only exception to this is the Windows Server 2012 machine itself,
    which always works.
From past experience I know that the moment I join a machine to the domain all of the DNS issues goes away, which is fine for the Windows boxes but not so much for the rest.  I also have visitors occasionally come by, who I cannot expect to join my
domain just to make things work normally.
This network originally started life out as Windows Server 2003 domain, but was upgraded to 2012 about two months ago.  I have been seeing this problem for years, but have always assumed it to be a Server 2003 issue and figured it would go away when
    I upgraded.  Nope...
Any ideas as to the cause of this and what I can do about it?
    Thanks,
    peter

Its really weird - I can ping an address and not have it work, then do a NSLookup of the same address against my DNS server and it resolves just fine.  Take a look at this screen copy below:

  • SQL Azure with Azure Virtual Machine inside Virtual Network - How to connect

    Hi Team,
I have one typical scenario where there is one Windows Application I wan to run from my Windows Azure Virtual Machine which is inside Azure Virtual Network (which has its DNS and ADFS and etc..)
Because its Virtual Network, We can't access internet within that network, apparently Virtual Machine can't access SQL Azure. So, How would we resolve this scenario.
Application is running great from my local system so, its accessing SQL Azure Database from my system. So, Application or SQL Azure or connection or such areas has no issue.
    Regards, Brijesh Shah

    Hi Brij,
    Thanks for your reply.
To add a DNS server in an Azure Virtual network, you can refer to the link below:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn275925.aspx
To obtain a public Azure-provided DNS server IP addresss, you can run "ipconfig/all" in another Azure VM which is not a virtual network which has DNS server defined. After you add a DNS server in the virtual network that VM belongs to, please restart
the VM to update the change.
However, since you mentioned that you are using a customed domain, I am not quite sure if any other configuration should be done for your domain.
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • Domain Join against RODC

    Hi All,
We are facing a issue with domain joining against RODC
We have a RODC which is separated from RWDC using firewall. The replication is configured using IPSEC and all is working fine.
The servers in RODC site do not have any connectivity to RWDC. We add the Servers in RODC site by following the script mentioned in the below link
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd728035(v=ws.10).aspx
The Servers which are in same subnet as RODC are able to join and login properly into the Domain. But the servers which are in different subnet are not able to join Domain and giving error “ Specified Domain either does not exist or cannot be contacted”
I am able to ping the RODC using IP and FQDN but not using netbios name
Nslookup works for FQDN of RODC and Domain name but fails for netbios names
I have checked the link http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2008/07/25/netbios-browsing-across-subnets-may-fail-after-upgrading-to-windows-server-2008.aspx and as per that the browser service is started in PDC as well as in RODC
The subnet of Server is associated to RODC site
I have created a registry entry SiteName in the server and specified the RODC site
Checked at network level and nothing is blocked there
Tried creating the record for in host file but no use

    Hi All,
We are facing a issue with domain joining against RODC
We have a RODC which is separated from RWDC using firewall. The replication is configured using IPSEC and all is working fine.
The servers in RODC site do not have any connectivity to RWDC. We add the Servers in RODC site by following the script mentioned in the below link
Firstly if you have RODC in a site, place a RWDC in that site as well OR enable
Bridge all site links. Also you need to provision the computer accounts in your RWDC, in that case the computer accounts will be replicated to the RODC and you can join. Look at RODC section here:
    Offline Domain Join
Reading this link by Jorge is highly recommended:
Domain Join through an RODC instead of an RWDC
Do not forget that if your windows server are 2003 they need to have direct connectivity to the RWDC for tasks like password changing. Also for time synchronization, an RODC is authorized to sync the computers time if and only if the computer password is
cached, otherwise the computer must contact the RWDC directly.

How to query members of 'Local Administrators' group in all computers?

  • SQL Azure very slow

    Hi Experts
We have SQL Azure database that is running very slow, so i took a backup of the database and restored on my on premise sql server express edition.
I tried a update statement on a logs tables that have approximately about 1,062,367 records.
UPDATE logs set FileId = NULL
    where LEN(FileId) < 36
The above update statement updates about 910,593 records on localhost host in 20 sec and if i run the same updates statement on SQL Azure it took 40mins and 16sec. The update statement was issues using SQL Server management studio installed on my local machine.
With reference to internet connection, we have fiber connection with download speed of 70.62mbps and upload speed of 84.09mbps
I am not sure whats going wrong with SQL Azure database i.e. could there be a specific fault on my database at Microsoft side etc.
Any advice or suggestion will be highly appreciated.
    Kind Regards

I have waited for 40 min for the update to complete and it has successfully and updated logs table so i can't re-run the update statement again because there will be no records to update.
I have managed to find another example that took about 10 mins to complete on the SSMS but when ran the same query on the azure management portal it took only 6 secs which puzzled me.
    Here is the query:
    select
     l.Value3 as ClientReference,
     l.[Key] as ActivityUser,
     l.Value2 as FormDisplayName,
     l.Value6 as Status,
     l.DateStamp as LastUpdated,
     l.[Action] as FileDescription,
     l.CompanyId as ClientID,
     l.FileId as FileID,
     f.id
    from Logs l
    LEFT OUTER JOIN files f on f.Id = l.FileId
    where l.AccountId = 578
    and type = 1
The above query returns about 3694 records only.
Here is the details of the query performance
