Don't open all programs when started

How can I stop all the programs being started when I turn on my computer? Thanks for your answer.

Uncheck the "Reopen windows when logging back in" box in the shutdown window:

  • Is it possible to open a program when connecting an external hard drive?

    Is it possible to open a program when connecting an external hard drive?
    I have a external hard drive with an iphoto library. I just want to connect my drive and automatically see iphoto open! Possible?
    I know there are some action scripts, am i right?

    Ok, here are the steps to take. Doing this involves generating two scripts, the first of which will have the system monitor the attachment of a hard drive, and the second which will conditionally open iPhoto. To make these and set them up, perform the following steps (it is a little involved, but will get you the result you want):
    Script 1: A launch agent to monitor attached hard drives
    1. Open the Terminal utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Then copy and paste the following command into it and press Enter, which will open up an editor program in the Terminal:
    pico ~/Library/LaunchAgents/iphotodrive.plist
    2. Now copy and paste the following text to the Terminal window in its entirety so it is all entered into the Terminal editor:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
              <key>Label</key>
              <string>local.iPhotoDrive</string>
              <key>QueueDirectories</key>
              <array/>
              <key>WatchPaths</key>
              <array>
                        <string>/Volumes</string>
              </array>
              <key>ProgramArguments</key>
              <array>
                        <string>/Users/USERNAME/Library/iphotodrive.sh</string>
              </array>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    3. Use the arrow keys to navigate your cursor down to the place where it says /Users/USERNAME/Library..., and change the text of "USERNAME" to be the same name as your account home folder. For example, my login name in OS X is "tkessler" so my home folder is also "tkessler," so for me this is what should go in place of "USERNAME" in the text above.
    4. Now press Control-O to save the file, and then Control-X to exit the editor (use Control, and not the standard Command key here).
    Script 2: A shell script to open iPhoto when your drive is attached
    1. Type (or copy and paste) the following command in the same Terminal window to make the second script in the same editor:
    pico ~/Library/iphotodrive.sh
    2. Now copy and paste the following text into the Terminal editor:
    #/bin/bash
    if [ -d /Volumes/"IPHOTODRIVE" ]; then
            open -a iPhoto;
    fi
    3. Again use the arrow keys to navigate, and edit the text IPHOTODRIVE to be the exact name of the drive you would like to spur iPhoto to open. The name will be case-sensitive, and spaces are OK within the quotes.
    4. Again save this file by pressing Control-O, then press Control-X to quit the editor.
    5. Next ensure this new script can be run, so to do this now copy and paste the following command:
    chmod +x ~/Library/iphotodrive.sh
    Now to activate these scripts you can log out of your account and log back in, and they should work as expeted, and will launch iPhoto only when a drive named "IPHOTODRIVE" (or whatever you edited this entry to be) is attached to the system. This procedure will create two files at the following locations on your computer, so to undo it simply remove these two files followed by logging out and back in, and you should be good to go:
    /Users/USERNAME/Library/iphotodrive.sh
    /Users/USERNAME/Library/LaunchAgents/iphotodrive.plist
    If you run into any problems, then write back here and we can figure out if there are any nuance details to cover for your setup.

  • How do I open up BIOS when starting up?

    I cannot figure out what key to hold down when starting windows xp professional to open up BIOS.
    What do I have to hold down?

    I am trying to do the same thing - access some type of BIOS or EFI upon startup.
    The reason I am looking for the BIOS or EFI is because BitLocker (a drive encryption program) on my Vista side of things requires either: a TPM chip (which it seems I don't have), or the use of a USB key at startup.
    Problem is: the BIOS needs to recognize USB in the "pre-operating system environment" (Microsoft's words). On a non-Mac machine, there is a setting in the BIOS to do this, but I don't know how to accomplish this task on a Mac.
    Any ideas?

  • Nvidia, two monitors, both load, opens all programs on first screen

    Hey all,
    I have an nvidia GE force 9400GT and using two monitors.
    In awesome wm, i get two different screens, almost like two computers shareing a keyboard.
    However, in gnome, i get almost the same, but not quite. My wallpaper stretches across both screens, and if i open a program in either screen, it will only load in the first screen,
    I don't want one large desktop spread over two monitors, would much rather have two seperate screens.
    Am using the nvidia-173xx package
    appreciate any advice. thanks

    I have two monitors as well. What I am doing is running a separate X server on every screen. This behavior can easily be configured in the nvidia-settings application, on the "X Server Display Configuration" tab. Just press "Configure" and you are prompted for three options. Choose "Separate X screen". Then click OK, "Save to X Configuration File" and restart your X.
    What you should note when you restart your X is that your window manger doesn't probably load on the secondary screen without further configuration. I have the following two lines on my .xinitrc file which loads Openbox to both of my screens (which you can use as reference):
    DISPLAY=:0.0 exec openbox-session &
    DISPLAY=:0.1 exec openbox

  • Can I close all layers? or even better, stop illustrator from opening all layers when I open a file?

    I just installed cs6, and when I open files in Illustrator, it opens all of the layers which contain sublayers.  It does this even if all the top-level layers were closed during the previous save.  The files I work with have a large layer-structure, so re-closing the top-level layers every time I open a file wastes a lot of my time.  Can I close all layers at once, or better yet, can I stop Illustrator from opening all of the layers automatically when I load a file?
    If not, then WHY on earth not?  I can't be the only one who opens and closes large files with lots of layers and sub-layers...
    Thanks for your help.
    Edit: I also am noticing this problem is even worse in cs6, because openning and closing individual layers plays a little animation of rotating the triangular arrow before the layer which, cute as it may be, just makes the task of individually closing up all my layers that much more tedious.  Can I turn off that little animation of the triangular arrow when opening and closing layers?

    You can save it as a pdf and when you open that in AI the layers will not be opened even if they have sublayers.
    Not true. Does the same nonsense an .AI file does. Saved as a .PDF, closed Layers/subgroups get opened.
    And no one cares!
    I do. Every other Adobe program with a layering sceme seems to be able to remember that you saved a file with all layers and subs closed. But not this one.
    Maybe someone from the AI development team should ask someone from the Photoshop team how they've managed it.....for decades.

  • Problems opening all programs!

    Every program I open does not respond immediately. The spinning wheel always appears. Why is this occuring? Is it the battery? I have force quit all programs that were open hoping this may solve the probelm but it hasn't worked. Any ideas?

    Sallyando,
    this situation could be due to either a software problem, a hardware problem, or a combination of the two; let’s presume for the moment that it’s due solely to a software problem.
    Try booting your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Do you still get the perpetual spinning wheel?

  • New windows in Firefox 29 on Windows 8.1 don't open fully maximized when clicked through a link

    New problem in firefox 29:
    When I click a link that opens the new page in a new window, the window pops open in the last partially maximized state that it was in. Should I maximize the new window (in Windows 8.1) and close it and re-click the original link, the window opens again in the partially maximized state, not the last fully maximized state that I previously closed it in.
    To create it as I've encountered it:
    -go to https://news.google.com
    -click on any article. the default behavior should be to open the article in a new window
    -the window won't be maximized in my experience
    -you can maximize the window and then close the window/ article
    -re-click on the same article and the new window should appear again in the non-maximized state, not the fully maximized state that you closed it in previously
    One point of note. Right-clicking the same link that opens the new window and specifically choosing "Open Link in New Window" DOES open the new window in a fully maximized state. I repeat, the new window does open fully maximized when you choose "Open Link in New Window" from the right-click drop downs menu. But, this doesn't happen with the simple left-click, which I'm concerned with.

    Reverted back to version 28.0, 29 just isnt working, layout is a mess. (Ok i got the old layout back by installing and setting up Classic Theme Restorer, but once you remove the orange title bar, the screen resize bug appears.) Also its a very bad thing such a large graphical overhaul took place without prior notice. If i wanted google Chrome i would have just installed that, dont need FF to provide me with it. Might upgrade again if bugs and layout are changed, otherwise ill stay with 28.0 or maybe start using Waterfox.

  • CS2 , Several Filter groups no longer work, freeze program when starting them

    I have a
    b MAC OS 10.4.11
    and when i am applying filters on a
    i 8 bit image rastered
    I get an audio error beep with no message. Photoshop then freezes.
    The following files have been trashed before installing CS2 again:
    > CS2 application folder;
    > Preferences: Paths & Settings
    > Com.adobe.photoshop.Plist
    I have
    b loaded the Mac OS
    over again, but am avoiding formating the hard drive and loading all programs again.
    What am I missing,
    i simple talk is best.
    Thanks

    Actually there seems to be no problem now. My issue with the docking bar was one associated with having two monitors and one of them turned off (thank you to the person above who mentioned that). The reset of the preferences set my cinema screen to the left of the flat screen, opposite of my set up. Monitor preference adjustment corrected that.
    One day when I get out of poverty, I will fill out the memory. But I have to say that I have had no problems so far with working with files vary large, up to 30mb, 40mb with lots of layers also.
    Gotta say, Mac new OS is the smoothest most content operating systems I have ever used. So much so that I forget some of the technical system stuff over time from rarely having to use them.

    It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
    Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Since upgrading to version 32, firefox always opens old tabs when starting, even though i do not have this option set. Version 33.0.3 does the same.

    When I updated Firefox to version 32, it started to always show my tabs from the last session when it is started. I tried changing the option "when Firefox starts" to all three of the available choices. None of these changed the behavior. It still opens the tabs that were last opened. I waited for the next release (33.0.3) but the behavior is still the same. I would like Firefox to open to my selected home page.
    I'm running Windows 7 Pro.

    One possibility is that Firefox keeps crashing during shutdown, and so Firefox is recovering from a crash every time. But if you can see that it is shutting down normally in your testing, that probably isn't it.
    Sometimes external software will create or update an optional settings file named user.js. For some reason, one of the things that often shows up in there is a preference to restore your previous session just once. However, because Firefox uses user.js to override your normal settings every time it starts, that then turns into a permanent change. To check for this and remove any user.js file you find, try this support article: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    Any luck?

  • Adobe tries to open all programs and con not be uninstall

    Hi, I am using Windows XP and I installed Adobe Reader X 10.1.3 But after I installed Adobe, I could not open any files except the ones on desktop. I can not use any of them from Start or Control Panel. I tried to uninstall Adobe from Control Panel>Default Programs>Program Install/Unistall but still tries to open with Adobe. Is there any other way that I can uninstall?

    It seems that the file association for .exe and .cpl may have been corrupted (and are now pointing to Adobe Reader).
    Can you open Windows Explorer, or does it give you the same problem?
    When did this start?  Can you possibly do a System Restore to a date before it started?
    This may be quite difficult to solve if you cannot open any .exe or .cpl files.
