DON'T UPGRADE LION until you read this thread

You will see from this thread that many people who have upgraded to Lion (versus a clean install) have had a disasterous experience. For instance:
I have lost count of how many times my computer has crashed in the last 3 weeks after not having a single full computer crash for years
The overall speed/performance of the computer and every application slows to a crawl
Programs "stop responding" for minutes on end and then work at a snail's pace when they come back
You can see from the thread that the problem seems to be associated with Flash. Uninstalling flash helps but it means you can forget about Youtube and every other application/web site that requires it.
From my own experience, I recommend you stay away from a Lion upgrade until this problem is fixed as it is extremely frustrating. I don't know if people who have done a clean install have the sme problem.

I am running 10.6 on my primary HD but did do an upgrade to 10.7 on an external HD so I could try it out. There are some things I really like in Lion but unfortunately there are also a LOT of things I do not like (LaunchPad, Spaces, conflicting touch gestures in every app, wasted time and resources on animated interfaces, ugly user interface in iCal, Mail, Addressbook etc.). The stability of Lion seemed fine though.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro and so instead of migrating or transfering a clone I did a nice new Clean install of 10.6 (and all the updates) and my favorite apps (all newest updated versions) and after I ran a clone backup of that, I upgraded to 10.7
Maybe that's the trick to updating.

My recommended method, clone your internal to an external, install Lion on the external, when ready either physically interchange the drives or clone the external back to the internal.
The external becomes one of your backup methods, it's already up to date.

If your phone is defective (aside from the accidental damage) Apple will fix or replace the phone. You saud you purchased the phone in January so it is still under warranty.

Did the original songs that do not appear on the car player play in the Music app on the iPod? Sometimes glitches happen and they do not. Also, If y ohave a 5G iPod/iOS 7, purchase songs will show with an cloud icon by them if they are not downloaded if Shall All is turned on in Settings>iTunes and App Store

Hello. Firstly, apologies for the attention-grabbing title, but ultimately I need as many people to test this out as I possibly can.
Here's a basic run down of my problem: if I leave a window open on my display for about 10 mins, and then minimise it, and bring up a dark grey background such as iPhoto, Spotify, or a set desktop flat colour of dark grey, I can still see the text and display pictures semi-burnt into my screen, temporarily. They do fade after a while, but it is still annoying that it does this (I am a graphic designer, so I could potentially be working with dark images, and I don't fancy seeing my facebook messages over the top of my work).
I had this issue with the iMac which I purchased last Thursday, and I returned it to Stormfront (my local Apple Authorised Reseller) and they acknowledged the issue and gave me a completely new iMac. However, yet again, this computer has the exact same issue, which makes me think it may be an issue with quite a few of the 27" iMac's.
Therefore, I would like to ask if you, as the owner of a 27" iMac have a few spare minutes so that you can help me find out if this is a rare issue and I've just been unlucky, or if it's a wider issue with several iMac's.
Please follow the step by step guide I have created below: the burn-in effect image is not a screenshot, however I have recreated the effect on Photoshop so you know what to look for. Thank you in advance for reading this, and helping me out; please let me know what results you get from this test.
I am especially interested in users of the current Thunderbolt 27" iMac, with the high-end spec (3.1 GHz Intel Quad Core i5/4GB RAM/1TB HDD/Radeon HD 6970M HD). Please, if you own a different model also carry out these tests - your screen may have the same issue.
Step 1: Change your desktop background to a dark grey colour. Go to System Preferences > Desktop and Screensaver > Desktop > Apple/Solid Colours > Cutom Colour... > Using the greyscale slider under the second colour picker tab, enter a value of around 15%. Set this as your desktop.
Step 2: Open a white-backgrounded application. Position it somewhere on your screen (preferably the left as this is where I experience it at it's worst), and leave the application there for around 10 minutes.
Step 3: Once 10 minutes is up, minimise the window, and study the area where the window was. If you have this issue, you will still be able to make out the elements from the open window (in my case, my Twitter followees display pictures and tweets). Here is a mocked up version of how it appears, created in Photoshop. As the issue is hardware related (I think), it doesn't appear in screenshots. Step 4: Please let me know the result, and the specs of your computer. I am contemplating phoning Apple to make them aware of this issue, but wanted to see if it's just me before deciding it's a hardware issue.
For me, I think I'll wait until the next Lion update is released, in case it offers a graphics driver update. Otherwise, I guess this one will be going back too.

What you are seeing is called Display Persistence. All LCD displays have a certain amount. Some less some more. This includes models from the same build. I have linked Apples response to what your seeing. I did the setup you said and saw no persistence on mine. If I had let it set longer I am sure it would have shown up.

Came home the other day, Internet was magic...usual speeds in excess of 60Mbs then BOOM!!! Fibre dead, landline dead, everything dead.
Looks out my window and see a wee Openreach van a couple of doors down the road. Can't be co incidence eh? Anyway I let it go and decide to check later on as this fella is obviously working away at something.
Few hours later everything is still dead, go and see my neighbour and all his stuff is magic again. I phoned BT and straight away they admitted my line was pumped, to be fair they arranged a appointment next day, which was a Saturday which I was surprised about but good news for me.
Young chap comes out next day and starts messing about, to cut a long story short this guy spent in excess of 4 hours going between my cabinet and actual exchange via my house to check stuff to eventually come back and tell this MUPPET of a engineer simply unplugged my line, plugged my neighbours into MY LINE, disconnecting my whole property without try to fix my neighbours issue which he investigated too and it was something underground he advised but said it wasn't his issue he was just there to ensure I got connected again.
The lad was superb and got me back up and running but this took about 4 hours of HIS and MY time due to this bampot engineer previous.
Needless to day I checked in on my neighbour and he is now disconnected again & proper **bleep**. I'm ok but I'm back to the line taking 10 days to stabilise again.
I'm going for compensation for loss of service and my neighbour is contemplating taking it to Ofcom for major incompetence and even my engineer said disconnecting a customers line without notice is gross mis conduct and it will go on file in his report as he has to explain why it took him 4 hours to fix.

Apple going MS style - don't install Lion if you don't need to

Hi,
I am obviously frustrated. I want to warn anyone with an Apple MacBook, MacBook Air or iMac that is not very recent. If you do not need Lion, don't install it. It is a disaster.
Don't get me wrong. I am a huge Apple fun, but with this release I am getting a degavu regarding my MS Windows history. Lion has similar "features" as Windows has and which were my original reason the happily get rid of MS Windows. Apple has gone totally the wrong way with this release if you ask me.
Problem I have since I installed Lion:
- non responsive applications for no apparent reason.
- hanging system several times a day.
- having to reboot my system to get any response from it several time a day.
- totally unpredicatable battery lifetime of my MacBooks. Mostly less than half the original amount before installing Lion.
This is not just on a single system, but on all systems I have. All systems were bought during 2007.
In my opinion this release is in it's current state a disaster and absolutely not Apple worthy. I hope they fire some people at Apple for this, becaus this will damage the brand in my opinion and should never happen again.
Why MS style (in my opinion)? Apple has given a lot of focus on useless graphical features (LaunchPad and MissionControl) (also degavu regarding MS). Well I can tell you it is not worth it. Snow Leopard was working like a charm. Lion is more like a Snail.
I hope Apple will come with updates really quickly, otherwise I am afraid the are now on the same quality level as MS. The point have always been happy to pay the Apple prices, because they were absolutely worth it. I can get poor quality for much less money. Even though this update is very cheap, it is still not worth the money.

my mac pro is in near lockup with the hd churning as i run a clone and try to get some work done. i can't seem to quit out of APERTURE even after pulling down to CLOSE from the Dock icon and pulling down to QUIT from the pulldown.
ALSO, i have a terrible time reading the Activity Monitor and was wondering if someone can walk me through how to handle this issue by reading either the txt file below or in getting AM to behave (it's always so darn /jumpy/).
anyway, is there a proper way to go about solving this kind of slowdown or am i relegated to closing every software i can handle and then - i guess - i run a shut down of the computer if I can't shut down Aperture normally?

yeah, on the widgets i am in the process of putting the ones on the macbookpro on the mac pro so there are a ton open because i am half way through this process.
is there something a relatively new user can do about the two things you mention here? i mean, i feel like i am having deja vu everytime i try and address something like this because on the one hand there are obviously things that are not working but on the other hand it is like the bermuda triangle for me in terms of trying to figure it all out.
i /just/ put my external Time Capsule on the /excluded/ list of items in Spotlight in order to keep it from showing the indexing symbol. This worked (even thought it is still showing on the MacBookPro). Also, Aperture has gotten hung up and I am trying to wait it out so I don't have to crash out the database (I'm told this is a very bad idea and to be avoided if at all possible).
Is any of this related to Paralels by any chance? I had a prl_disp_vm or somesuch that was hogging 100% CPU at one piotn and it is unclear to me if they resolved this.

Hello everyone. New to the forums and been enjoying Dreamweaver CS5's powerful capabilities up until this point. I'm a little new to PHP, and having a little trouble. I will link the PHP syntax for you guys to take a look at. What I'm trying to make is a PHP file that sends an email for a refer a friend type form. This is line 16-34. Lines 25 and 29 are highlighted red. I'm a bit confused as to the errors given here, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Most people don't know the true definition of multitasking, and the difference between multitasking and backgrounding.
On a phone, you can't multitask with anything except music. On a computer, you can watch a movie, monitor an IM conversation you are having with a friend and type up a document for work/school.
On a phone? NO.
Apple is ONLY calling this multitasking because people are sheep and too stupid to realize that you CAN'T multitask on a mobile device, ESPECIALLY ON A CELL PHONE.
What we are actually doing is backgrounding, and when you get down to the heart of how the backgrounding works, it makes people's heads try to explode. They try to understand it, but those who aren't technically inclined blow up the whole definition out of proportion. Also, developers are the reasons why apps don't multitask, NOT Apple (although Apple shoulda' gotten on the ball with backgrounding sooner).
Pretty much, there are 7 APIs that are available to devs, if they want to keep running a service in the background. This is much more efficient, because if you can't see the application, what is the point of still having it run??? It should ONLY keep the SERVICE open that it needs.
As for the "multitasking", as long as the dev recompiles their app against the new 4.0 SDK (they don't have to change any code, merely open it in the new SDK and recompile it), the app will then "freeze" itself in the state it is in when the end user hits the Home button. Then, when the user goes back the app, it will "unfreeze" itself and to the end user, it will seem as if it was never closed.
As for the system handing this, if an app is opened that needs more memory than is available, it will look at the frozen apps, and will find the one that you used LAST (the "least recently used" algorithm) and will close that one, and thus, the CPU and memory that it needs to run the new app will be obtained.
However, the end user who wants to understand but doesn't, won't understand this. I don't like when I hear people complaining about this issue.

I copy and pasted your code and got the error. I rewrote the code and it went away. I have had problems in DW with templates that gave me errors when everything was good but the only way to fix it was to redo the template from scratch. Sounds stange, but true. The only other thing, and the experts here might chime in is to put the scripts in comment tags like below.

I just bought an App that has a 7 day guarantee.but I do not have one of the pre-requsites to use it. ( An Amazon store) But that wasn't mentioned until you read way down the page. I can't seem to find where to quickly get a refund started.

How to get a refund when you have a 7 day guarantee or money back....I want a refund after 7 minutes. It is an App that will not work as I do not have an Amazon Store.

As far as Apple are concerned all App purchases are final and non-refundable (they have sometimes refunded where the purchaser has made an error but it's entirely discretionary).
Any 7-day guarantee is up to the program's author and it is them you would have to contact.
If you want to try with Apple, go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; select 'All Products and Services' in the first column, 'iTunes' in the second column and then 'iTunes Store' in the third column. There's no harm in asking, but do be aware that they are under no obligation.

just want to post my disappointment with my 1.67 G4 PB.
I was all happy that I switched to the MacOS, but after 3 months on this machine, I got to say that the silver linings are starting to appear.
1) Even though my UJ 845E DVD burner is supposed to burn at 8x, I can only manage a measely 2x on my Verbatim and Maxell DVD medias. and the only DVD that i find that burns at 6x is with Iomega DVDs (CMC manufacture disks).
2) I find the region lock really restrictive. Even though I live in Australia, I do buy DVDs from abroad, mainly from the States, where it's region 1!!!
3) What really annoyed me was a month after I bought my PB, Apple released a DL support for my current drive.
Now what do I think Apple should do? I think they should release firmware patches to actually unlock the capability of this drive. There are plenty of PC laptops with this drive with DL support AND DVDRAM support (not that I will be using DVDRAM). And please Apple, I want a drive that doesn't take 40 mins to burn a 4.7Gb disc!
I have to say, my good feelings and patience is starting to fade fast, and these days, I rely on my LiteOn drives on my WinXP PC to do all the DVD burning. The PB? It's good as a living room decorating piece. I know Apple you have the new MacTel coming out, but please don't forget your loyal customer base.

Yes, you guys are lucky in the States as you really don't have to worry about region locking for DVD drives, but here in Region 4 Australia, that's something to worry about as it is often cheaper to buy DVDs from the States (including shipping) than it is to buy DVDs here. That's how companies make money out of the poor souls here Down Under.
As for the DVD media, I've tried many medias. Mainly ones manufactured by Verbatim, CMC (my discs labelled Iomega) and Ritek disks (both as Ritek and Maxell brands). Anyway, all these disks are labelled up to 8x. On my Lite On burner, it does burn 8x, and if anything, sometimes faster, but not on my PB. I will keep on trying, but if my cheap LiteOn drive can burn at 8x on these expensive Verbatim disks, why can't the MaSHITa drive in the PB do the same? Please help Apple. Release a firmware update!
