Doubts: Oracle 9i Client -J2SDK1.4 - JDBC Driver

Hi eXperts,
I have installed Oracle 9i(9.2.0.1) client in my machine. Along with the Oracle 9i client, there are two JREs (versions 1.3.1 and 1.1.8) also installed. After installing the oracle 9i client, the SYSTEMs environment variable PATH is updated with the bin directory of both JRE (C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.3.1\bin;
C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.8\bin;) and bin director of Oracle home (C:\oracle\ora92\bin;)
Already I have installed J2SDK 1.4.1_02. I have set the USERs environment variable PATH to C:\j2sdk1.4.1_02\bin;
My problem is:
1.     Before installing oracle 9i client, I was working with J2SDK v1.4.1. After installing, I could not able to invoke the J2SDK 1.4.1; instead Im invoking JRE 1.3.1. I want work with latest version of J2SDK (that is J2SDK1.4.1, the one I installed) at the same time without disturbing the Oracle 9i clients JREs. Because, I want use the Oracle client for JDBC connection to the database.
2.     I have installed J2SDK1.4.1, I want connect with oracle 9i database from JAVA using JDBC driver. That means JDBC driver supporting J2SDK1.4. (With ojdbc14.jar, not with classes12.jar,). But, currently Im using classes12.jar to connect with database, because my program invokes JRE1.3, not J2SDK1.4.
3.     And one more doubt is that why Oracle 9i client comes with two JREs. JRE 1.3.1 is having backward compatibility; it should support JRE 1.1.8 features too. Why two JREs?
Hope that any of you can solve my doubts.
Thank & Regards,
Vijay

Hi Viravan,
Yes of course, JRE 1.1.8 doesnt have the forward compatibility with JRE 1.3. I would like to hear the words from you to clear and assure myself with the doubt that what is the purpose of inclusion of JRE1.1.8 along with the oracle 9i client?. Im assuming that this is because of to use JRE 1.1.8 compatible JDBC drivers. Is it right?
Because,
For JDK1.1  classes111.zip
For JDK1.2 and JDK1.3  classes12.zip and
For JDK1.4  ojdbc14.jar
If that is the case why they havent included the JRE1.4 along with Oracle 9i client, because they were provided the ojdbc14.jar.
If any OTHER REASON is there, please let me know. Im suspecting that there may be some other reasons for the inclusion of JRE1.1.8. Looking forward your reply
Thanks for your support.
Vijay

    Bonjourno,
    What is the URL of this FAQ ? I could not find it.
    Does the above assertions also apply to the JDK 1.2 (thin)

    Otherwise, there is no way to use JDK 1.2 with Oracle 7.3.4.

  • Oracle 8.1.5 - jdbc driver problem

    I am using Oracle8.1.5 (personal oracle) for database. I am trying to retrieve the data from JAVA(JDK 1.3). I use the following driver and its manager in the Java program:-
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new Oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    Class.forName("Oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    However Java is not getting compiled with the following error message:-
    Cannot resolve symbol:
    package: driver
    class: DriverManager
    I would request your goodselves to help me out. Thank you in anticipation.
    Regards,
    Sivaswamy

    Thanks for the reply.
    Have you tried manually taking the current time and
    converting it to the way Oracle is expecting it? If I embed a TO_DATE and format it, it works fine, but I want to stay database independent. Is that want you mean?
    Or how about using new java.util.Date() to get the
    current date?Not sure I follow you:
    --- insertStmt.setTimestamp(5, new java.sql.Date(System.currentTimeMillis()));
    Gives an error since setTimestamp expects a java.sql.Timestamp and
    --- insertStmt.setDate(5, new java.sql.Date(System.currentTimeMillis()));
    Only stores the date without the time.
    Thanks again,

  • When I get a date field value using the Oracle thin (type 4) JDBC driver...

    ....in 'DD-MMM-YY' format from an Oracle 8i database and pass it in to the java.util.Date() constructor, I get a IllegalArgumentException. This error doesn't occur when I use the type 2 driver, so it is apparently a driver-specific thing. It happens on both Win32 and Linux.
    Has anyone seen this before? Is there a newer version of the Oracle thin (i.e., type 4) driver than is listed here?

    Yup, that original post didn't make much sense, did it? Let's try again.
    I've got an EJB app that runs on WebLogic 6.0 (on Solaris in production, on Win2K for development) and accesses an Oracle 8i database. This app currently uses the Oracle type 2 JDBC drivers. All is well.
    So I wanted to see how it would run on Linux. I've got a Redhat 7.1 box handy, so I installed the JDK and WL6.0 and slapped the ear file on there. Problem! Can't deploy because there are no Oracle drivers on this machine!
    Makes sense. So I started looking around, and it seems installing Oracle on a RH 7.1 box involves patching glibc and other such nastiness. So let's just try the type 4 JDBC driver - no glibc patch, no shared object libraries, just good 'ol pure Java talking to Oracle on port 1521.
    Once I had the URLs and whatnot set up, the app connected to the DB just fine, created the connection pool, read some data, etc. But when my app read a date from the DB and instantiates a new java.util.Date object, I got an IllegalArgumentException - i.e., the date can't be parsed.
    "Hmm... that's odd", I thought, so back I went to my trusty Win2K machine, modified my configuration files to use the type 4 driver and - same error! So I switched back to the type 2 driver - and everything works fine, Dates and all. Hmmm.....
    As you correctly state, that Date constructor is deprecated and I should use DateFormats and GregorianCalendars and whatnot instead.
    But has anyone seen this weird behavior before - code that works fine on a type 2 driver starts throwing exceptions when used with a type 4 driver? Anyone have any solutions?
    Thanks much,
    Tom

  • Oracle 11i v1 for JDBC driver

    Hello:
    I checked the drivers on my XP. There is a driver called: Oracle in OraHome92. Is it ODBC? We are using 11i v1. Is it that we do not need to install JDBC client driver?
    Thanks,

    A lot more useful information is required here to be able to advise you.
    Start with the assumption that you have a client, a middle tier and a data server ... three separate machines. If this is correct tell us about all of them. If it is not then explain your architecture.
    If by 11i you are referring to e-Business Suite then you should ask your question in the appropriate Apps forum as the correct answers for Apps are not necessarily the generic answers you will get here.

  • Oracle 817 client and MS driver for oracle

    Hello
    I had installed oracle 8.17 client on my machine.
    Suddenly, my datasource with "MS driver for oracle" seems not to be working.
    I uninstalled 8.17 and installed 8.16.
    No matter, what I do, I cannot get the datasource setup with "MS driver for oracle" work
    Anyone has similar experience
    -Aswath

    What error message are you seeing? I've never seen any conflict between the Oracle and Microsoft drivers.
    You could try downloading the latest version of the MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) from Microsoft <http://www.microsoft.com/data>. That will have the latest version of the Microsoft driver.
    I'm assuming that you have already tried deleting and re-creating your DSN. If you haven't, that would be a good first step.

  • JVM Crash With Oracle OCI Client

    Hi
    My app is running on Windows 7 64 bit, Jboss 4.2, launched from Eclipse, and runs fine when I use the Oracle thin client (10g, 32bit). However when I try to use the OCI client, I get this:
    # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
    # EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x6d906f21, pid=4740, tid=5656
    # JRE version: 6.0_21-b07
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (17.0-b17 interpreted mode windows-x86 )
    # Problematic frame:
    # V [jvm.dll+0x106f21]
    I'll post the contents of the log in another message because it's too long to fit here. Using the thin client is NOT an option unfortunately as the thin driver is missing some functionality that we need to use.
    I've installed the Oracle client in a folder that doesn't contain spaces, or parentheses (c:\oracle\.....) and the JDK is installed in a similar directory (c:\java\...)
    I've tried both 32bit and 64 bit versions of JDK1.6 and the Oracle 10g client. I have also tried mixed mode and interpreted mode JVM (Xint) with the same results.
    ojdbc14.jar is in my JBoss server's lib directory, and ocijdbc10.dll is in my path (c:\windows\system32).
    Anyone any ideas what's going wrong? Been trying to fix this for days now. Appreciate any help.
    Richard

    Sorted it (well, my colleague did anyway). We installed a fresh version (32 bit) JDK (6u21), the Oracle 10g (10.0.3) client (32 bit) and made sure that there were no other OCI DLLs anywhere. I had some in the JBoss bin directory which I had copied in earlier that morning and forgotten about. So, the only OCI DLLs I have now are in Oracle's installation directory. Once we removed those erroneous DLLs from the JBoss directory, the server made the connection successfully. I don't full understand why, because I was getting the error earlier without the erroneous DLLs being present too, so I think there was some additional interaction going on somewhere. One other thing that may have been important is the tnsnames.ora file I had. We found a post that said the tnsnames file generated by the installer, when it only has one entry in it, can include dodgy whitespace at the end which can cause problems. So, just to be on the safe side we added a second entry (to another DB) - maybe that was something to do with it.
    So, the Oracle 10g client and OCI driver DOES work on Windows 7 64 bit (at least for me anyway)

  • Oracle.sql.* with JDBC drivers 8.0.5

    the oracle.sql package is not included in my JDBC driver file classes111.zip given for oracle data server version 8.0.5.
    I would like to use the oracle STRUCT and ARRAY type for calling PL/SQL stored procedures taking STRUCT objects in arguments.
    Are the JDBC drivers 8.1.* compatible with the oracle data server 8.0.5 (if I only use the STRUCT or ARRAY types)? Is it a way for passing ARRAY of VARCHAR2 values to PL/SQL stored procedure with the oracle 8.0.5 JDBC driver?
    thanks

    Unfortunately, these classes (oracle.sql.STRUCT and oracle.sql.ARRAY) are not compatible to 8.0 database. There is server format changes between 8.1 and 8.0, and JDBC driver only supports the 8.1 format.
    Please upgrade your database to 8i.

    Hello Paul,
    Thanks for you suggestion. Based on it , I did add the exact jar file in the PATH environmental variable in XP.
    Path=C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\jdbc\lib\ojdbc14.jar;C:\oraclexe\a
    pp\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\bin;C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\bin;C:\Ora
    cle\product\10.1.0\Client_1\bin;C:\Oracle\product\10.1.0\Client_1\jre\1.4.2\bin\
    client;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06\bin;Even after adding the specific jar file *("C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\jdbc\lib\ojdbc14.jar")* ..I am getting the exact same error. moreover, to verify this I also tried to import import oracle.jdbc.driver.*.....and now my code would not even complie and I get error *(c:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_13\bin\OraThin.java:3: package oracle.jdbc.driver*
    does not exist ) . I also rebooted my machine just to make sure ...that didnt work either. Also, I changed these jar to be first in the PATH varibale ..to avoid conflict with any later .jar's classes. The code is :
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.driver.*;
    public class OraThin {
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        try {
    System.out.println(System.getProperty ("java.class.path") );
          Connection con=null;
          Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
          con=DriverManager.getConnection(
            "jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostname:15282:ServiceName",
            "scott",
            "tiger");
          Statement s=con.createStatement();
          s.execute("SELECT SYSDATE FROM DUAL");
          s.close();
          con.close();
      } catch(Exception e){e.printStackTrace();}
    }What am I missing here!! ?
    Thanks again,

    # probably isn't but we seem to get by.
