  • 100mbps up / down connection dropping to 50 up / down with APE?

I have a symmetrical 100Mbps fibre internet connection. When I connect my MBP via ethernet, I get a reasonable 93Mbps up / down. However, connecting with my Airport Extreme (802.11n) I'm only getting about 50Mbps up / down.
I'm being told by my ISP that I should expect a drop if connecting via WIFI, but 50% sounds a bit extreme.
Can anyone advise on a) whether this is to be expected, b) how I can improve this?

N wireless at 2.4ghz, is limited to max link speed on the apple products of 150Mbps.. since wireless is half duplex it gives a max transfer speed of around 60Mbps.. and real world a bit less.. often a lot less.
So open your wireless info in the top menu, holding down the option key when you click it, and see what channel and what band you are on. Plus the link speed.
This is gen4 Time Capsule so = Gen5 AE.
    Transmit rate is 145Mbps.
    Here is the 5ghz result.
I have named the two bands differently so I can force connection to whichever I choose.
5ghz is much faster.. and on later (Gen4 AE and after should link at 450Mbps on N wireless Mac from 2011 and later).
Gen1-3 will have max link of 300Mbps.
But at range the speed drops rapidly and it will swap to 2.4ghz unless you have it named differently.
You may struggle even on 5ghz to get full ethernet speed but perhaps 80% of it.
Wireless is good .. for good speed up close is required. Place the computer in the same room as the AE and do the test.
If it is very slow even on 5ghz, and the link speed is high there is another issue.

  • Trickling down connection with airport extreme "card"

I recently bought an airport extreme card for my mac pro (older model, 2008?)
Anyways, the problem is that i live in an apartment that offers free wireless. Naturally i suspect the signal to be weak as it has been for a laptop ive used here before. Airport works fine except that when i connect and have a download it starts out high like around 200kb/sec and then slams down to about 12kb/sec then slowly trickles down to a request time out. (I am unable to update because of it.) At first i thought the problem was just well...the apartment, then booted up into Vista and started a download and it keeps a steady pace of about 9kb/sec without timing out.... I tried connecting the 1 and 3 wires, as well as the 2 and 3 and pretty much i noticed no difference. Any suggestions? What firmware is better to use for this?

thnx for the suggestion. That's not my problem.
I do have WiFI connection. So I am already connected tot the AE....the part I do not understand is why I can not connect to the external harddisk that is connected to the AE.
    Especially because:
    1) It used to be connected
    2) My other macbook does connect to the external harddisk

  • Satellite L875D-S7332 wi-fi slow down/connection

Hello, I've had my Satellite for just under two years now. I never really had any problems with it before hand, but now my Wi-Fi is giving me fits lately. It doesn't want to connect to my home network half the time, and when it does, it moves at a terrible rate of speed. I mean less than dial up speeds. I recently moved, and was using my cell phones mobile hot spot for it. Oddly enough my laptop will have no issue connecting to the mobile hotspot, but if I try to connect it to my home router, or if I take it out in public and try to hit another hotspot such as a resturaunts, it will have issues connecting, or connect and be incredibly slow. My OS is windows 8 (unfortunately) I've tested other devices on the router and they all work fine, so it's not a router issue. I've also tried uninstalling/updating my drivers through device manager. Finally I've tried using a cable to connect directly to the router, and the net will work just fine when I do. That's how I've got it set up at this moment. Thanks for any help that can be given.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my Satellite P875-S7310. Laptop was working just fine and had some windows 8.1 updates applied on July 26th and it's been downhill from there.
I even did a complete factory reset which has taken my laptop back to 2012 version since it was purchased in January 2013.
I'm at a loss and cannot connect via wireless even though all my phones and devices are working fine via wireless and know it's just a laptop problem.
I have no idea what do to do!!!!!?

  • E12000 randomly drops/ slows down connection

So, i've never had to worry about my router, until a few weeks ago.... I had an issue with the internet dropping, or slowing down quite a bit (speedtest went from 27mbps to 0.2 - 2.7 mbps) which is barely useful, especially since I stream/download often. So, short story is, I didnt have a laptop that could hook up through ethernet and kept thinking it was the ISP's fault, finally got a hold of one and after they sent in a technician and checked the wiring, and troubleshooted with me, I realized the only issue was wireless, wired continues to work all the time. So, i upgraded the firmware, tried switching MTU to correct amount, changed to a standalone channel, and nothing seems to work..the beauty of it all is, im just past the 1 year warranty.... yay..... So, is there ANYTHING else I can do?this has been too frustrating and if I cant get this fixed I wont likely be using a linksys routher when im forced to buy one.

Hi Envymia! If you have updated the firmware, I suggest to reset and reconfigure it. In case the same thing will happen, play again with the wireless channel.

  • Multifunction printer slows down connection

Brand new FIOS double play installation (internet 20/5 + phone).
Scenario 1: Just internet = perfect speed.
Scenario 2: Connect a phone to my second wall outlet = still perfect internet speed.
Scenario 3: Connect my new Brother MFC-990CW multifunction printer to the wall jack and suddenly my internet speed drops by 25%.
    Has anyone had similar issues?
    Thanks.

Would it be safe to assume this printer is wireless?  And that you're looking at speeds over a wireless connection?
    Hi.
Yes, it's wireless. But the problem only occurs when I plug in the RJ-11 cable. And yes, I did try to connect to the router via Ethernet, and the problem persisted.
The good news is that I have fixed the problem, despite what I was told by the Verizon reps at my store (twice).
    IT'S THE FILTER STUPID!
In short, I went to Radio Shack, bought a Gigaware DSL filter and placed it on the fax line and my speed is back up. So, despite what we are told, DSL interference can, apparently, also occur on VDSL.

  • "No Internet Access" on connected device with mobile hotspot

I've been on Verizon for 2 weeks.  Note II on a Family Share Plan with lots of data.  Using the built-in Verizon Mobile Hotspot application.  Connecting from my work laptop, which is Windows 7.
Set it up and everything worked fine for a week and a half.  I had no problems connecting or accessing the internet from my laptop.  It worked fine Monday morning.  Monday afternoon my laptop started giving me the warning message "No Internet Access" when connecting to the phone's hotspot.  I'm in a 4g area where the hotspot has worked previously.  I've tried several times in several different 4g locations as time allowed over the last 2 days, and I have not been able to get to the internet on my connected laptop again.
While connected to the mobile hotspot I ran Windows troubleshooter and it tells me that there is no DHCP server available, and that the default gateway for this network is unreachable.  My laptop has no problems reaching the internet via the wireless network at work or at home.  The laptop connects to both of those wireless networks every day (both before and since this problem appeared.)
I have rebooted both the phone and the laptop, with no change in the problem results.  I renamed the hotspot, and connected to the "new" hotspot from my laptop, with no change in the problem results.  I have tried running "ipconfig /renew" from my laptop while connected, and that is when it tells me that it cannot find a DHCP server for this network.
What broke?  How can I fix it?
I'm still in the 100% refund return period on my contract and phones (for another day or so.)  This is an absolute deal-killer.  Hotspot on my phone is the single reason why I switched networks.
    * Revised 2/28:
This morning I turned on the mobile hotspot feature on my wife's Galaxy S3 (on the same Verizon Family Share Plan.)  Then I connected to it from my laptop.  When it connected it said "limited internet access" for about 30 seconds, and then that warning went away and I had full access.  I surfed for a moment to confirm, and all was working.  I turned off the GS3 hotspot and turned on the hotspot on my Note II.  When I connected to the Note II's hotspot from my laptop I still had no internet access.  I left it for 3-4 minutes, and it never switched on.  I tried surfing and got only error messages in my browser.
All of this was while sitting at my desk.  So I believe I have ruled out the laptop as a cause for this problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Randy

After I posted the above in February I talked to Verizon support.  They could not resolve the problem.  They replaced the phone, and the new phone has worked for months.  My work schedule changed a bit, and so I started using the hotspot less often.
Last week I noticed that after I connected my laptop I had a longer delay before it would change from "No Internet Access" to giving me access.  Yesterday morning it was so slow that I got the command prompt up on my laptop and determined that from the laptop's perspective the problem was that there was no DHCP server available through the hotspot network.  That morning it did eventually find the DHCP server and issue my laptop an IP address, and let me connect.
Yesterday afternoon the DHCP server never appeared, and I was not able to connect to the internet.  Same thing this morning.  I rebooted both the phone and the laptop.  No change.  The laptop connects to other wireless networks just fine, still.  This worked for months.  Why did it slow down connecting and then stop?  I'm guessing there must be some sort of buffer that has filled up.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Airport base station does NOT deliver a solid connection!

I have an older Airport base station (an extreme-square, flat, white, you know the one). Ever since I installed the most recent firmware update I get next to no data flow through from the provider. If I connect direct to the provider router via ethernet cable I get amazing connectivity speeds. I change the set up to connect via the Airport and I get either no connection or 5 KBS.... a speed, when it available is a joke. While trying to run through the Airport my Airport signal is full strength. It appears the base station does not know how to digest and dispense the information from the service provider into a full band of connectivity. The problem exists with both Apple laptops in the house. I have done all the required resets and restarts and to no avail. Connecting direct, which is a HUGE hassle, provides amazing speeds. I had none of these issues before I did the firmware update about three days ago (about 12.18.09). Any thoughts or directions to help me out?
    Thanks!

Your Express requires an IP address to be issued by the device connected to its WAN port, in most cases that is a cable modem.
Power down your modem and let it rest. Leave it powered down, connect it to your AirPort Express, then power it back up again. This permits the modem to supply the Express the IP address it needs.
Like it says, if you still can’t connect, contact your Internet service provider.

  • HH4 - can't connect to it via ethernet or wireless

I'm struggling with intermittent fault - it happened on a HH3, but same problem is now beginning to repeat on a replacement HH4 I was sent.
When fault manifests itself (lets call it "faulty mode") I cannot connect wired or wirelessly to HH - I cannot raise the Homehub Admin page either via "bthomehub.home" or "192.168.1.254" and that is true for all It devices in the house (Win xp box, Win7 laptop and a rasp pi).  When this fault is apparent there is no internet access, and pure wifi devices (kindles and android phones) all are unable to access internet, and an ethernet connected youview box also loses connectivity to internet.
However - HH is obviously still working to an extent, because a both wireless and ethernet connected devices can all interact on the network, files on the NAS remain streamable and browsable by everything that needs to connect.
I have FON, and that still operates correctly when the HH is in "Faulty mode" - ie my wireless devices can all connect through it to the internet, and that FON connection is definitely coming from my HH not from a neighbours - if I power down the Hub I have no FON connections showing up in any of my devices.
HH has all the lights showing properly...when in faulty mode the devices I can browse to on the network have 169.type Ip addressess rather than 192. addresses.
Reseting the Hub and or powering it on and off sometimes makes the fault go away, but often it doesn't.  Factory reset sometimes cures it, but again often it doesn't.  System has sometimes gone into faulty mode whilst just working away sweetly, with no It equipment being powered up/down/connected/disconnected. I've tried tricks like clearing caches  used different browsers chrome/FF/IE but no avail.
I noticed this initially with a HH3 - that got gradually worse (more faulty mode incidents until it remained in faulty mode) BT sent me a HH4 about 1 month ago as a replacement, now the same symptoms are appearing on my HH4 (twice in 3 days)...so what's the problem, is it my settings/something I should be doing, or is it a duff HH4 as well.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think a clue to what is happenning is the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP addresses.
These show a failure of the connecting device to obtain a valid DHCP IP address from the router, and the 169.... gets auto-assigned by the device itself. On a network, devices all with 169-type addresses can communicate with each other, as you've found out.
So the problem that needs fixing is with the DHCP server in the router, which is not serving valid IP addresses when requested.
Here are two things you can try, maybe do the first with your PC and the second with another device, see which works better for you:
    - Assign a static IP to the device by setting it in Windows. Set it outside the router's DHCP range but with the same first three parts to the IP. eg 192.168.1.201. There's a guide here.
    - In the HH DHCP admin pages, reserve a fixed IP for another of your devices, using its MAC address, again outside the DHCP range. While you're at it, set the lease renewal time to its maximum.
If those don't work, send the blooming thing back!

  • White Screen which goes of when connected to laptop!

    hi all,
My BB curve 8520 is stuck with a white screen and it only comes back to life when its connected to the laptop.
The solution posted in another thread was to use the APPLICATION LOADER WIZARD.
but i cant seem to do so.  As the drop down "Connection" menu, is just blank.
When i doconnect it to the laptop- everything comes back to view and the battery life seems normal. everything functions well.
When i remove it and start to use it even for 5 mins- this MUCH HATED white screen appears again.
Ive read that its some sort of shorting behind the screen, that it may be a battery problem, and also one that says its a software problem.
Someone please help! Thanks so much.
    Virik

    Hi again, Rockmantis
I don't think so. The inverter is the piece of hardware that controls what is shown on the display. If this was bad, then there would be nothing on the display, even with shining light directly on it. But the backlight is what makes the image visible by lighting it up. With this bad, it can sometimes work and then sometimes not, as it is currently for you.
    Best,
    Adam
