Downgrade firmware on iPod Video 5.5g?

Is there a terminal command that I can use to downgrade my firmware to a previous version? I tried using the old iPod Updaters in my Utilities folder, but they won't let me install older firmware versions.

Found this on iPodlinux:
Enter the following command in the Terminal, then press return:
mount | fgrep Volumes
The result should be a line that begins with "/dev/disk...". For example:
/dev/disk1s3 on /Volumes/ipod_nano (local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)
In the preceding example, the disk number is '1'.
Make a note of the numeric digit appearing after the word "disk"; disregard the letter "s" and following digit(s). Enter the following command in the terminal, then press return:
cd "/Applications/Utilities/iPod Software Updater.localized/iPod Updater 2006-03-23.app/Contents/Resources/Updates"
Now backup your current firmware. Enter the following command, but substitue the '?' with the number you made a note of in the first step, followed by "return":
dd if=/dev/disk?s2 of=myipodfirmware
Now, perform the downgrade by entering the following command, but substitue the '?' with the number you made a note of in the first step, followed by "return":
dd if=Firmware-14.5.1.1 of=/dev/disk?s2
This would downgrade the nano firmware from 2006-03-23.
Firmware-13.6.1.1 downgrades the iPod Video.

  • Podcast woes, would like to downgrade firmware iPod nano (4th gen.)

    Hi,
Every since I upgrade my iPod nano to firmware version 1.0.4, I can't seem to make playlists where multiple podcasts play one after the other - in all cases, it plays one podcast, then stops. As I love listening to podcasts during running, this implies that I have to pull out the iPod every time and select a new podcast manually... quite annoying. This even holds for podcast playlists made "on the go" - it plays the first podcast, then stops.
In light of this, I'm wondering whether there's a way to downgrade the firmware, as if I recall correctly, 1.0.3 didn't have this issue. I can't seem to find the firmware anywhere, though, and from going through the discussion forum it doesn't seem to be something supported by Apple. I'd appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this issue, either by pointing out a walkaround, or by indicating whether downgrading firmware is possible at all...
    Many thanks,
    Philipp

My 4th Gen iPod Nano won't turn on once it is off the USB cable. If it is connected to the iMac (iTunes 10.1 (54)) it works perfectly well (synchronizes, plays music). Have tried to reset it (holding the Menu and Center buttons) and to reset it to its original settings (current SW version is 1.0.4) and it still wont work.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello there
I'm just wondering when will Apple will release iPod Video Firmware that does fix the Artowork disappearance in iPod Video

  • Ipod Video, 1.2.3 Sync problem

    Hi all,
I have a 60Go Ipod video. I use it like external drive on windows and mac. So it uses PC firmware. I update it with 1.2.3 firmware and now when I sync it with my mac (Leopard 10.5.2) a lot of tracks are not playable (just pass it), Playlist are empty and no podcast are visible from the Ipod. But from itunes, I can play music directly on the Ipod, playlist are visible, all seems to be correct...
So I think my files are not corrupted.
Those music comes from ITSM and my ITunes is registered with my Apple Id.
If I install mac firmware, all is OK. But I can't use my ipod on windows.
If I sync from windows, all seems ok too. But I would like to sync from my MacBook pro.
I don't know what to do. Maybe downgrade it but I would like to find another solution.
    Can some body help me?

I tried to sync with a PC and it works fine. No problem with it.
But I switch for 3month and I don't want to keep windows XP just to sync my ipod...
I have a MacBook pro with Leopard. Itunes and Leopard are up to date.
    Can some body Help me?

  • IPod video 5th G - Can only load about 15 songs before it crashes and won't allow me to add any more - Is my hard drive broken?

I have an iPod Video, 5th Generation - a few years old aye, but it does the job. Recently it crashed and wouldn't respond at all, I tried the 5 R's and the iPod wouldn't restore at all. Finally I managed to restore it, but then encountered a new problem.
When I try to put new music onto the iPod the maximum I can really add is about 15/16 songs (currently sitting about 112 MB). I can use the iPod just fine with this on it, but I can't add any songs or anything past this limit. I can take songs off and add new ones on, but again cannot pas this limit.
It is a 30GB hard drive, so I should be able to load near enough 30GB onto it.
Whenever I try to pass the limit and add new songs a message saying "Attempting to copy to the disk "RUSSELL'S I" failed. An unknown error occurred (-69).", and then a second message pops up reading "iTunes could not copy "Song" to the iPod because an unknown error occurred (-69)."
Looking to find out, does this mean my Hard Drive is broken/damaged, or could it possibly be a different issue, as buying a new hard drive is reasonably cheap, but if it turns out to be the motherboard or something else then I don't want to have wasted the money buying a new HDD only to find out the problem hasn't been fixed.
Has anyone else had this issue? Or anybody found a way to fix it?
    Cheers
    Russell

See here: iTunes displays a -69 error when syncing iPod
You can use the disk diagnostic tool built into the iPod's firmware to test the health of it's Hard Drive.  See this post from another forum member turingtest2 on how to do this as well as what the resulting numbers mean.

  • Ipod video needs to be reset when using shuffle songs.

I like to shuffle my 4800 plus songs on my new ipod, but I have noticed that after turning it off for an extended period of time usually a couple hours or over night, it needs to be reset. I have not tried to retore it as of yet, but I plan on to see if that helps. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • IPod Video/Audio problems

i have a 60gb video ipod and have converted seinfeld episodes off dvds. i used videora ipod converter to convert the video to H264 256kbps video and 96kbps audio. When i play any episode the video and audio will work for about 30 seconds, then it pauses fills the cache and the video starts playing again but without audio. if i fastforward or rewind the video and audio pick up again for 30 seconds until the process repeats. how do i fix this ANNOYING problem? thanks
      Windows XP Pro

I have just encountered the very same problem. I have a 60Gb iPod video and have spent days converting a lot of my videos (mostly Japanese Anime) to iPod. They all worked perfectly on last week. However, last night I started watching an episode and after about 30 seconds the video freezes. It starts again about 5 seconds later, but with no sound. If I rewind or fast forward a bit, the sound comes back, but it freezes again shortly after. I started to think "what have I done to the iPod since last week?". It was then that I remembered updating the firmware to 1.1. I put 2 and 2 together and thought "maybe other folk are having this problem too", so I decided to check the support page here.
I am far from happy about re-encoding over 250 episodes of Anime, so ideally, I want the ability to re-install 1.0 firmware on the iPod. Surely this must be possible! If anyone can provide a link to the 1.0 Updater or to more information on this subject... that would be great, cos right now, my iPod is pretty much... useless!
    Thanks

  • IPod Video Specs Inaccurate?  I can sync/play 720x400 mp4 files

The stated max resolution for iPod videos on the tech spec pages is 640 maximum width for both h.264 and mpeg4.
I was ripping some files for play on my aTV at 720 resolution (both h.264 and mp4 for comparison) and noticed that some of them were syncing and playing on my iPod as well. Turns out that the 720x400 format in the mpeg4 encoding will sync and play on my 60gb (5.0gen) iPod.
Anyone know if this is just luck, a fluke, or some change in iTunes/iPod firmware from Apple? If a change, Apple needs to change the published specs.
The other explanation is that older video iPods have higher resolution capability; but that doesn't seem likely.

Its not a matter of max width, but # of pixels. The max # of pixels is 640x480, which is 307,200. In a full frame video, 640 would be the max resolution horizontaly. A video at 720x400 is only 288,000, therefore fits into the max # of pixels with room to spare. Apples specs are based off full frame video.
OFF TOPIC, but deals with apples specs. What i find cool is that the specs say max frame rate is 30 FPS, but ive run pleanty of 60 FPS mpeg4s and they work just fine.

  • Ipod Video Freezes

Hi everyone I'm just wondering how to fix my ipod.
I know someone just put up a post just like it
I just got the new update for my 60GB Ipod Video. Before the update it was fine the videos played normally but now my videos will play normally for about 30seconds then freeze then play but without any sound.
I don't know what happened, was it the update? or do I just need to do something?
    Thanks for the help!
    Dell   Windows XP

This solution has worked to stop this from happening:
    The solution is:
    1) Open up the Video file in Quicktime Pro
    2) Select File->Export
    3) Select "Movie to MPEG-4" beside "Export:", then click the OPtions button
    4) Select "Video" and make sure that the "Video Format" is set to "Pass through"
    5) Do the same for "Audio", then hit OK
    6) Save the file
Basically what this does is rewrites the MPEG-4 "container" that the video is stored in. It seems that the iPod with the 1.1 firmware has a problem with the container as created by Videora and other programs. By simply rewriting the container, the videos play fine. This process can take up to a minute or two depending on the size of the file, but still MUCH faster than straight-up encoding via Quicktime Pro.
The other solution is to reconvert the file using other software that doesn't cause this problem. So far others have reported that the Nero Recode converted files have not caused this to happen while playing movies on the iPod.

  • IPod video question...

Hi people. I am looking forward in buying a 30GB MP3 player after a week and my tight choices came down on a Zune and an iPod video. I did a lot of research on both, including going to Apple's Tech Specs of the iPod video. It said there, that you must have a 2.0 version of your USB in order to connect the iPod to your PC. Will it work on a USB 1.1? I am afraid that it might not work or something might happen to the firmware of the iPod if I'll connect it to my PC. BTW, I had this PC 5 years ago, and I'm afraid that it's USB might be a version 1.1 and it might mess up the iPod. I've seen this issue on a Zune Board and saw that a Zune supports USB 1.1.
Second, I want your honest opinion. What is much better? iPod video or Zune? Thanks to those who will share thoughts with this one.

USB 1.1 won't hurt anything. People seem to get it to
work, sort of. It will just be slooow. I suspect it
will slow with a Zune, too.
I don't really expect you'll get an unbiased opinion
here regarding the relative merits of Zunes and
iPods. They both have pluses and minuses. For
example, you can't change the screen background on an
iPod but you can't use a Zune as an external hard
drive (at least not with out third party hacks). And
if you want to use a subscription music service, an
iPod is not going to be for you (unless, like me, you
by a second mp3 player, in my case a Sansa 260, for
that purpose). In the end, it's not a life or death
decision. Both will play music. I really like my
iPods, back to the first generation. I will admit to
a certain anti-Bill outlook, as well.
Hey, Meg_St.Clair, thanks for the information. You totally convinced me to buy an iPod instead of a Zune. Well, the Zune might have FM and Zune-to-Zune sharing, but I was totally turned down by the fact that it cannot be an external hard drive.
Thanks for informing me, anyway. I'd still choose function over functionality.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Any news of updating ipod photo to ipod video

guys.. is there any news about updating ipod photo to ipod video in the future??? i'm so darn pis$ed after looking at the ipod video... i have an ipod photo 30 gig and i just feel that it's really unfair for other ipod with colour display users!!!!!!!!!!
anyone here would be kind enough to calm me down!!

    Bryan,
posts like this are in my opinion quite inappropriate and immature. I can agree on the fact that at the time of purchase the iPod purchased was exactly to specifications, but if a day/week/month later you can get more (10 GB and video capability) for the same price would you not feel cheated in a certain way? Just imagine it happening with anything other than a technological advancement and imagine it happening to YOU.
Anyway, it would be a very nice gesture for us Apple iPod enthusiasts to be provided with a firmware upgrade if the technology of their iPods is capable of handling videos. I for example am a Windows deciple, but as with everything, having listened to the right reasons, was contemplating to convert to Apple. Let's see how they handle this issue going forward.

  • Canon 20D and ipod video not compatible?

like many other users, I have a canon D20 and it is impossible to import the pictures from the D20 to Ipod. the various messages after several attempts are:
    pas de carte insérée
    file : 0
    import failed...
we also tried with our Leica digilux 1 : same errors
we finally tried with Canon powershot pro : miracle! it works.
those who succeed with their D20 to import pictures to ipod video 60G, PLEASE describe the procedure... maybe the user nick... may help me?
    thanks a lot

I followed the Camera Connector instructions and switched both the iPod and the EOS 20D on before connecting. The messages 'Unsupported Device' and 'No Card Inserted' were both shown at different times. Upgrading the camera firmware from 1.0.5 to 2.0.3 didn't help. Then, with everything connected and 'No Card Inserted' showing on the iPod display, I switched the camera off and then on, and the iPod recognised the camera. Photos were easily downloaded to the iPod and then into the computer using Adobe Photo Downloader, which automatically started when the iPod was connected to the computer

  • Can the iPod Video disk break if you move it whie running?

If I say run or dance to the iPod Video music would the hard drive break?

i've had two disk-based ipods die when running with them, both wth disk failure (reported by ipod diagnostics), others have reported similar woes over the years
even if it doesn't kill the ipod, there's the chance of it hanging if bounced when accessing disk (the skip protection is quoted at up to 20-25 minutes i think, but that is based on spinning up the disk every 20-25 minutes to refill the buffer, not on opportunistic refill to always mantain the buffer near full, so at least with the old firmware if the ipod was subjected to enough vibration when it tried to reload the buffer it would hang)
imho it does depend on running style and how the ipod is carried, so some people may run/jog without problems
i bought a nano for running, no more problems

  • IPod video onto a photo

I made a itunes compatible video. I converted it to mp4 and resized the video to 160x128, and I changed audio bitrate to 128. Itunes recognizes it, but it won't transfer it to my ipod. Before the new ipod update comes out, does anyone know a way to transfer it?
Download the itunes compatble video here: http://www.mytempdir.com/210767
If the future ipod updates doesn't allow ipod photos to play videos, I know I could change my ipods version info so ipod updater will think its a ipod video, so when i press restore it will format it and put the ipod video firmware on it.

Please can you tell me how I would change my ipods version info.
    Thanks
