Download for SQL Server machine running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2

I am confused what 11g product to download and how to configure for the above server. I just need for SQL Server 2008 to be able to communicate with some Oracle databases. I don't need to manage the Oracle database, nor do I need to create one. I just need to be able to create linked servers, use SQL Plus, and create some SSIS or DTS packages that will bring Oracle data into the SQL Server. I think I just need the client, but for 11g, I see it is less than 1GB in size. I am afraid I may be missing something because I thought the client downloads were about 2GB, but the 2GB downloads are not called "client". This is a 64bit machine running an Intel Xeon X7460 chip.
Our server has a C:\, D:\, and E:\ drive on it. The data (.mdf) is on drive E:\. The normal environment is on C:\ like usual. I also need to know if I need to set environment variables which I read about, but am not sure how to set them and make them stay, or if the software does that.
As an aside, I tried installing a 10g on there that the DBA downloaded and could never get it to work, although I was successful in getting tnsping to work, but SQLPlusW would close on me when I tried to connect and SQLPlus failed with some error but can't remember what right now. I uninstalled it. I think it may have been the wrong download.
I would appreciate any info at all, even if you don't know about everything said here.
I have a link here where I think I am close, but I still am not sure. Let me know if this is correct and which link to click. If I am wrong, please provide the correct link if you can. Thank you.

Hi,
To integrate Oracle with SQL server you need the following
Install Oracle 11g Release 2 client software
Install Oracle 11g Release 2 ODAC software
Restart SQL services
Configure OraOLEDB.Oracle provider
Create linked server
Add remote logins for linked server

  • Do I need to install Security Hotfix (KB2977319) after Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

    HI,
I have installed Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 on my SharePoint instances. This was to resolve a known  issue faced with the instance. CU12 helped resolve the issue. My company is rather strict regarding security hotfixes. But I am
not sure if this particular hotfix [Security Hotfix (KB2977319)] is required if the instance has CU12 applied.
Tested this on a Lab server, the installation did run fine, the summary log also stated that the KB is applied. But the Build Number did not change. Hence the doubt.

Yes you must install Security update mentioned in KB 2977319 it is important for SQL Server to be patches with this security update. Without this it could allow an attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it.

  • MS14-044 for SQL Server 2008 Standard on Windows Server 2003?

MS14-044 was recently released and states that it applied to MS SQL Server 2008 SP3, yet the patches available for this security bulletin do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems. Does MS14-044 not apply to SQL Server running
on Windows Server 2003? If it does apply, why isn't there an update available to run on Windows Server 2003?

    Hi Chasg76,
According to your description, the patches available for MS14-044 do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems and you want to know whether MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server
    2003.
Based on my test, KB2977321 applies to SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 product and it does apply to SQL Server 2008 SP3 running on Windows Server 2003.
I installed SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 in Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86. After the service pack 3 installation completed, KB2977321 was offered in the Automatic Update.
Besides, you can manually install the update by downloading the update form the Download Center web site as well.
I also tried the manually installation and I downloaded the Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) from this web: Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-044),
    it was installed successfully.
After installed security upgrade, I checked the file attributes and compared to this article: MS14-044: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2008 SP3 (GDR): August 12, 2014(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2977321/en-us).
    The result is the same.
According to my test, MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server 2003 even though Windows Server 2003 is not listed in the supported operating systems.

  • Help! Licence for SQL Server 2008 VM on Windows 2012

I am confused by latest Microsoft Virtual server licence for SQL Server 2008.
We have a Hyper-V host running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. Displayed in its Task Manager, it has 16 cores and 32 logical processors (with hyper-threading turned on). A SQL Server VM is running on this host with 10 Virtual processors (showing from Hper-V
Manager). The SQL Server edition is SQL Server 2008 Standard.
We are using "Per Core Licensing Model". Now, the question is how many licences we need to purchase for the above SQL Server?
There are "SQL Server 2008 Licensing Guide", "Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Virtualization Licensing Guide" and "Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Licensing Guide". But none of them covers this scenario, which is running SQL Server 2008 on
    Windows 2012 Hyper-V host Server.
Could you please provide me your opinion: Should I license 10 cores for the SQL Server VM or license 5 cores (because the hyper-threading on physical server) ? Thank you very much in advance!

  • How to access the datasource window in SSRS for sql server 2008 R2 for writing my query without having to go through the wizard?

I have used SSRS a lot years ago with Sql Server 2000 and Sql Server 2005. I have written external assemblies, ... But now I have to do this with Sql Server 2008 (R2 -- which I realize I am way behind the times already but ...)  in sql server 2000 and
2005 there was a tab for datasource to the left of the tab for design which was to the left of the preview tab. How do I get to the datasource window in sql server 2008 (r2) ?
I see that datasource explorer.  But where can I get to the datasource window to edit my queries and so forth for sql server 2008 (R2)?
    Thanks
    Rich P

I think I found the answer to my question --- just right-click on the the Data Sources or Datasets for editing connections and dataset queries.  I'm guessing it gets even fancier with Sql Svr 2012 - 2014.    Man, that's the one thing
about coding platforms -- you let it go for a few years and come back, and everything has changed (well, a lot of things).  Now I need to figure out how to add an external assembly to SSRS 2008 (R2).

  • Security Update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (KB2977320)

So i have been trying to install this update on one of our servers since it is showing up on our MBSA scans but it has been failing on one of our machines with the error code: 0x80070643
I downloaded the update and tired to install it manually. The installer returned: There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer. If that was true then why is SCCM still pushing the update to the machine and why
is the MBSA showing that it needs the update? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

    Hi David,
Based on my understanding, the error code: 0x80070643 was thrown out when you install KB2977320 with MBSA. And installation also failed when you download and install update manually.
Regarding the error code: 0x80070643, it can be caused if the MSI software update registration has become corrupted, or if the .NET Framework installation on the computer has become corrupted. To fix this issue, we can follow these methods:
Fix MSI software update registration corruption issues
    Repair the .Net Framework
Uninstall and reinstall the .Net Framework
For more information, please refer to this link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982.
Besides, the security update is released for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2, please check the version of SQL Server you are using. About how to check the SQL Server version, please refer to this article: How to tell what SQL Server version you are running
(http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1140/how-to-tell-what-sql-server-version-you-are-running/). Then please download the Security Update for SQL
Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 from this link (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43957), and retry install it manually.

  • WSUS service pack updates for SQL Server 2008 R2

Hello, how do we configure WSUS for SQL Server Service Packs? One problem we have is that we do not see SQL server 2008 R2 SP2 available as a download from our WSUS server and this is when SQL SP1 is installed. Now I can apply these service packs manually
but when we have 100's of virtual machines with different versions and editions of SQL this task can be quite daunting. Suggestions please?
    RFDZ12

from memory, SQL service packs and CUs are not released via WSUS.
This article is a good reference for (products other than Windows) for what has been released via WSUS:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb456965
The equivalent article for Windows releases, is
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894199
Or, you can check the MU catalog (which doesn't necessarily mean the update is available via WSUS, but if the update you seek in is the MU catalog, you can usually import it into your WSUS)
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/
some updates for products are not able to be released via WSUS, for various reasons, and so in those cases, you need a different deployment solution.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 - Express Download Link Broken

    Hello there
I am installing Backup Exec 2014 and during the installation I need to provide the EXE from the "Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 SP2 - Express" installer (German version). Unfortunately the link is broken, even when I navigate from the download
page to the SQL Express download page (http://www.microsoft.com/de-de/download/details.aspx?id=30438) I always get:
We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found.
I cannot find the German installer anywhere else in the internet, and as I just had to uninstall the old backup solution to be able to start the installer from the new one it is quite important that I get this file as quick as possible so I can get the backup
    running again.
Any idea what I could do or where I could find the installer?
    Thanks for you help.
    Kind regards
    Phil

    Hello Phil,
    yes, seems to be broken.
    Download 2008 R2 SP1 (http://www.microsoft.com/de-DE/download/details.aspx?id=26729) and apply SP 2 afterwards.

  • Sharepoint 2007 and SQL 2008 SP3 on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 (64-bit)

Is there any documentation we can check if SQL 2008 SP3 is compatible with Sharepoint 2007 SP2 or SP3? Both Sharepoint and SQL servers are running on separate Virtual machines (Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2(64-bit)). Currently DB is running on
SQL server 2008 SP2, and we would like to have SP3 loaded on it, but want to find if there is any compatibility issue?
    Thanks in advance!
    mh

I'm not aware of any known issues with SQL Server 2008 SP3 and SharePoint 2007. I did a quick check and saw one person reporting an issue with their Central Admin site after applying the SQL Server update, but that's it.
With that being said, I would strongly encourage you to test out the application of that SQL Server service pack in a non-production environment well before you apply it in production. There is always a chance that your environment has something set up in
it that would cause an unexpected issue, and the best way to get an idea of whether or not an issue exists is by doing it somewhere else first before you do it in prod.
