Downloading and installing 3.0+ to 2nd ipod touch

For the next two months, I am away from home (and my "base" computer) but my 2nd ipod touch badly needs updating to the new software 3.0 or higher. How can this be accomplished on a public computer?
Also will I have to pay again after I paid for it on my first ipod touch? I don't want to sync anything and I don't needt to do a back up yet... I simply need to install the update.
.

Yeah, since it is a public computer there would be no need for them to have a backup file from my ipod. Plus it will take forever to wait on it.
Well, keep in mind that the backup does not consist of your media files, only your iPod preferences, contacts, calender, web links, game data, etc. This normally only take a few seconds, and you can always delete the backup from within iTunes (as long as your Touch is still connected).

I think I will try downloading the update to itunes while my ipod is still disconnected and see if there is any trouble and then connect to install if everything goes well.
OK, just beware that its not always the downloading part where problems happen, usually the problems (if there will be any) occur during the OS installation, and that is where a firewall and AV software can get in the way (among other potential issues). I'm not trying to scare you off, just warn you that there can be problelms and you might think twice before insalling a new OS while away from home. If you really wanted to play it safe, you could use a 3rd party software to extract your media files to a local computer before udpating the OS, but you probably don't want to do that on a public one.
