DPM failing SQL backups due to error: "the SQL Server instance refused a connection to the protection agent. (ID 30172 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990F85)

I ran across this error starting on 6/4/2011 and have been unable to find the root of the problem.  In our environment, we have a DPM 2010 server dedicated to backing up all our SQL envrionment (about 45 SQL Servers total).  All of the SQL
environment is backing up fine except for a SQL Cluster Application.  This particular SQL Instances is part of a 6 node failover cluster with 6 SQL Instances distributed amongst them.  The other 5 SQL instances in the cluster are backing
up fine; only one instance is failing.  The DPM Alerts section shows this error when attempting to do a SQL backup of one of the databases on this SQL instance:
Affected area: KEN-PROD-VDB001\POSREPL1\master

I have checked the cluster node this particular SQL instance is running on using Perfmon and the machine is nowhere near capacity on CPU, memory, network, or Disk I/O.  I have failed this SQL Application to another node in the cluster and
receive the same error (this other node has another clustered SQL application on it that is actively running as well as backing up fine).  The only thing that I am aware of that has changed is that we installed SP2 for SQL 2008 about 2 weeks prior
to when the failures started to occur.  However, we updated all six clustered SQL Instances at the same time and only this one is having this issue so I don't believe that caused the problem.  We are running SQL 2008 SP2 (version 10.0.4000.0)
on all clustered instances along with DPM 2010 (version 3.0.7696.0) on this particular DPM server that has the issue.
One last thing, I have also noticed errors in the event log pertaining to the same SQL backups that are failing (but the time stamps are not concurrent with each backup attempt):

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Don't know if this helps or not, but I also noticed another peculiar issue that is derived from this problem.  If I go to "Modify protection group", then expand the cluster, then expand all six nodes in the cluster, five of them show "All SQL Servers"
and allow me to expand the SQL Instance and show all databases; the one that is having a problem backing up, when I expand the node, doesn't even show that SQL exists on the node, when in fact, it does.
I would also like to add that the databases on this node that will not backup are running fine.  They run hundreds of transactions daily so we know SQL itself is OK.  Even though it is a busy SQL Server, there is plenty of available resources as
the SQL buffer and memory counters show the node is not under durress.

              o Login failed for user '<machine name>\ASPNET'
        * I also noticed that after I installed RS,I do not see reports folder under C:\Inetpub. This folder does not exist, I manually created reports virtual folder in IIS and liked it to  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer
        * Thsi is obviously permissions issue and I missing something so your help will be really appreciated.
    During installation, I always specified user as domain\user.

    Hi NewToReporting,
    From you descriptions, I know you have tow questions: 1.Why the SQL Server Reporting Services does not create virtual directories in the wwwroot? 2. Why the error "A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing" happen? If I have misunderstood, please do not hesitate to let me know.
    One of the changes in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 is the removal of the Internet Information Services (IIS) dependency. So, we won't see report server virtual directories in the wwwroot folder.
    The second problem is caused by the user '<machine name>\ASPNET' does not have permission to login the SQL Server database "Reports".
    To solve the issue, please follow these steps:
    1.Open SQL Server Reporting Services Configuration Manager(Start - All Programs - Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - Configuration Tools)
    2.Go to "Database" tab.
    3.Click "Change Credential"
    4.In the coming dialog, fill the textboxes with this information(some textboxes are not modifiable )
    Server: <the server name of the report server catalog database>
    Authentication Type: Current User - Integrated Security (This will use the user we are login to connect to the database server.)
    UserName:(If selecting "Current User - Integrated Security", this textbox is not modifiable. )
    Password:(If selecting "Current User - Integrated Security", this textbox is not modifiable. )
    5. Click Next
    6.In the coming dialog, configure the following information:
    Authentication Type: Service Credential(This will use the user the reporting services running under to connect to the report server catalog database. The user is the one we configured in "Service Account" tab)
    UserName:(If selecting "Service Credential", this textbox is not modifiable. )
    Password:(If selecting "Service Credential", this textbox is not modifiable. )
    7.Click Next to confirm the information.
    8.Click Next to apply.
    This will auto add the user  '<machine name>\ASPNET'  to login group, set this user to be the owner of report server catalog database, and also give this user "RSExce" role.
    Now, we are able to connect to the report server.

    Solution:
    The error might occur due to following cases.
    case 1: when the password is wrong
    case 2: when you try to login from some App
    case 3: when you try to login from the domain other than your time zone/domain/computer (This
    is the case in most of scenarios when sending mail from code)
    There is a solution for each
    solution for case 1: Enter the correct password.
    Recomended: solution for case 2: go to
    security settings at the following link https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and
    enable less secure apps . So that you will be able to login from all apps.
    solution 1 for case 3: (This might be helpful) you need to review the activity. but reviewing the activity will not be helpful due to latest security
    standards the link will not be useful. So try the below case.
    solution 2 for case 3: If you have hosted your code somewhere on production server and if you have access to the production server, than take remote
    desktop connection to the production server and try to login once from the browser of the production server. This will add exception for login to google and you will be allowed to login from code.
    But what if you don't have access to the production server. try
    the solution 3
    solution 3 for case 3: You have to enable
    login from other timezone / ip for your google account.
    to do this follow the link https://g.co/allowaccess and
    allow access by clicking the continue button.
    And that's it. Here you go. Now you will be able to login from any of the computer and by any means of app to your google account.

    Hello
    I wrote this code. I searched but could not find a solution for my problem.
    private void button_sendemail_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    string temp = "mygmailpassword";
    System.Security.SecureString password = new System.Security.SecureString();
    temp.ToCharArray().ToList().ForEach(p => password.AppendChar(p));
    string mailfrom = "…@gmail.com";
    string mailto = "…@yahoo.com";
    string subject = "Hello";
    string body = "Hello, I'm just writing this to say Hi!";
    using (MailMessage mail = new MailMessage())
    mail.From = new MailAddress(mailfrom);
    mail.To.Add(mailto);
    mail.Subject = subject;
    mail.Body = body;
    mail.IsBodyHtml = true;
    // Can set to false, if you are sending pure text.
    using (SmtpClient smtp = new SmtpClient("smtp.gmail.com", 587))
    smtp.UseDefaultCredentials = false;
    smtp.DeliveryMethod = SmtpDeliveryMethod.Network;
    smtp.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(mailfrom, password);
    smtp.EnableSsl = true;
    smtp.Send(mail);

    Hi ARZARE,
    After some research and i have tested your code, it works fine on my side. But i used Hotmail
    using (SmtpClient smtp = new SmtpClient("smtp.live.com", 587))
    Per my understanding, you're trying to send from an @gmail.com address and they will require authentication, but you don't have credentials specified.  Try sending from @hotmail.com or change smtp.EnableSsl
    = false to see what happens.

  • DPM failed to communicate with the protection agent on DPM 2010 SERVER because the agent is not responding. (ID 43 Details: Internal error code: 0x8099090E)

    Hi everyone,
    Backup jobs for protected members are intermittently failing with the following error on the DPM server:
    DPM failed to communicate with the protection agent on <DPM 2010 SERVER> because the agent is not responding. (ID 43 Details: Internal error code: 0x8099090E)
    Why does the DPM server failing to see it's own DPM agent cause the backup job for another server to fail? One day a backup will work fine, the next it may fail; and the next back to normal again...
    The following error is recorded in the Service Control Manager event log on the DPM server just prior to the above error:
    A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the DPMRA service to connect.
    Thank you.
    With regards,
    Rob

    Hello,
    I have read these entire postings and see that my problems match most of the above problems.
    I believe we have tried all of the ideas in this blog and lots of other ideas from other forums and internet searches.
    We have about 80 small databases protected and set at 15 minute incremental and most will work but some fail.  When they fail the most common, but not only error, is something like "DPM
    failed to communicate with the protection agent on <DPM 2010 SERVER> because the agent is not responding. (ID 43 Details: Internal error code: 0x8099090E)". The alert is inactivated in the DPM Console, and the backups resume as normal."
    Since later jobs are successful I thought all was well.  All was well until I went to restore from incremental backups.  We worked for two days (day and night work) to restore
    from a corrupted virtual disk on our SQL Server 2008 R2.  I suspect DPM had something to do with the corrupted virtual disk.  All I know is that we never had this problem until installing DPM.  Here is what we encountered when we went to restore
    from the protection points:
    *  Restore jobs take a minimum of 15 minutes for jobs that are 45 MB or 2 GB.
    *  If you pick a backup from the list of recovery points that is not valid the job runs for 15 minutes and then "Failed".
    *  You cannot rerun the job because SQL Server 2008 has the table being recovered as <tablename> (recovering) and a retry will not work.  Of course time is wasted while waiting
    to see if it worked.
    * Eventually you realize that even after dropping the table in the (recovering) mode in SQL that the restore point must be bad or possibly one of this failed recovery points.
    * So begins the quest to start restoring recovery points one by one and 15 minutes by 15 minutes until you find one that actually restores to a SQL Instance.
    *  If you have 80 of these to do and you average trying three recovery points and each takes 15 minutes, not to mention the time to drop the table in SQL, well that time adds up to 3,600
    minutes of trial and error.  60 hours of trial and error, wow not much of a savings using DPM over a SQL backup plan.
    * And then you have to explain to your customers that their databases were restored but you do not know at what point the DB was restored.
    All in all it seems like DPM concept is great but like many backups the backup plan looks good on paper but actually restoring a backup is quite a different matter.
    I don't know if anyone has ever solved the problems presented in this forum but if they have then I wish they would post and if no one has solved the problem then shame on DPM.
    Good luck everyone, but I for one have spent about two months on trying to protect and restore consistently.  I have never had one day of consistent and reliable restore points.  I
    am going back to sql management plans for my backups.  I have never, in 10 years had a sql generated backup fail me.  Never.

    I have a web page that contains a ReportViewer control.  I am trying to display a report, which is an .rdl file located on the SSRS server, in this ReportViewer control.  I have set the ReportPath and ReportServerUrl correctly.  I am
    getting an error message.
    Am I suppose to use an .rdlc file rather than a .rdl file?  Does the web server configuration need to use a certain account?
     I am getting the following error message:
    The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible version.
    The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.

    Hi bucaroov,
    The error "The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found." means the ReportServerURL configured in the ReportViewer control is invalid.
    Please follow these steps to solve the issue:
    Logon the Report Server machine.
    Open the Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
    Copy the Report Server URL from 'Web Services URL'.
    Logon the application server(in this case, it is the server that host the web page), check if we can use the URL we got from step 3 to access the Report Server. If so, please replace the ReportServerURL in the ReportViewer control with this URL. If it is
    not available, could you please post the error message.
    Additionaly, we don't need to provide the extension for a server report. The ReportPath should be like: /<reports folder>/<report name>
    For more information, please see:

  • DPM 2012 R2 (ID 104 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FF)

    We are running DPM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012 R2
    We have a Protection Group:Servers (9 members) where 5 servers always give the same error message, when we try to run a synchronization job with consistency check. With other 4 server everything is fine. (All 9 servers: Windows Server 2012 R2)
    All servers have "Windows Server Backup" feature installed
    Error message:
    The replica of Microsoft Hyper-V \Online\S022 Reports on S022 Reports.SynCrust.********.eu is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can
    recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.
    For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
    Any help would be appreciated

    Just wanted to add some further details to this thread...
    As suggested in
    this article, Windows Server Backup has been installed on all 3 cluster nodes. I have also tried disabling/enabling the WinRE agent, as it suggests, with no effect.
    The Virtual Machine I am trying to back up is running Windows Server 2008 R2 with the latest updates, and has integration services version 6.3.9600 installed.
    Additional searching led me to
    this article, which states "DPM works seamlessly with Hyper-V VSS writer to ensure that consistent versions of virtual machines are captured and protected without affecting virtual machine access." It doesn't clarify if this is the method used
    when backing up VMs stored in a CSV, however. Regardless, the Hyper-V VSS writer is not listed when issuing
    vssadmin list providers
    I went through the steps outlined in
    this article to install the writer, but even after following said steps, the writer still does not appear as registered on the Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster node via the above command.
    I should also mention that
    this prereqs article mentions that the Hyper-V role should be installed on the DPM server. The hardware I'm using has an old AMD Sempron 3400+ CPU, so I'm unable to install this role on the DPM. The article states "DPM protects Hyper-V virtual
    machines even without the role, but you cannot perform item-level recovery (ILR) unless the role is installed.", so it's doubtful that lack of the role would cause this issue; MindaugasKa, is the Hyper-V role installed on your DPM?
    Despite the effort of upgrading my storage server to Windows Storage Server Standard 2012 R2, my cluster nodes to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, and my DPM to 2012 R2, the
    nightmare continues...

    I keep getting an error message saying "There was a problem connecting to the server.  URLs with the type "file:" are not supported"  Can someone help me locate and get rid of this error.

    Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences. If it shows that Time Machine is ON, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner, if necessary, to unlock it. Scroll to the bottom of the list of backup drives and click Add or Remove Backup Disk. Remove all the disks, then add them back. Quit System Preferences. Test.

    Not related to your question, but...
    It is important that you keep IE updated. The information included with your question, indicates that you are using IE7; you should update to IE8 for your own protection. IE9 will not be made available for Windows XP.
