DPM is Only Allowing Express Full Backups For a Database Set to Full Recovery Model

I have just transitioned my SQL backups from a server running SCDPM 2012 SP1 to a different server running 2012 R2.  All backups are working as expected except for one.  The database in question is supposed to be backuped up iwht a daily express
full and hourly incremental schedule.  Although the database is set to full recovery model, the new DPM server says that recovery points will be created for that database based on the express full backup schedule.  I checked the logs on the old DPM
server and the transaction log backups were working just fine up until I stopped protection the data source.  The SQL server is 2008 R2 SP2.  Other databases on the same server that are set to full recovery model are working just fine.  If we
switch the recovery model of a database that isn't protected by DPM and then start the wizard to add it to the protection group it properly sees the difference when we flip the recovery model back and forth.  We also tried switching the recovery model
on the failing database from full to simple and then back again, but to no avail.  Both the SQL server and the DPM server have been rebooted.  We have successfully set up transaction log backups in a SQL maintenance plan as a test, so we know the
database is really using the full recovery model.
Is there anything that someone knows about that can trigger a false positive for recovery model to backup type mismatches?

I was having this same problem and appear to have found a solution.  I wanted hourly recovery points for all my SQL databases.  I was getting hourly for some but not for others.  The others were only getting a recovery point for the Full Express
backup.  I noted that some of the databases were in simple recovery mode so I changed them to full recovery mode but that did not solve my problem.  I was still not getting the hourly recovery points.
I found an article that seemed to indicate that SCDPM did not recognize any change in the recovery model once protection had started.  My database was in simple recovery mode when I added it (auto) to protection so even though I changed it to full recovery
mode SCDPM continued to treat it as simple.
I tested this by 1) verify my db is set to full recovery, 2) back it up and restore it with a new name, 3) allow SCDPM to automatically add it to protection over night, 4) verify the next day I am getting hourly recovery points on the copy of the db.
It worked.  The original db was still only getting express full recovery points and the copy was getting hourly.  I suppose that if I don't want to restore a production db with an alternate name I will have to remove the db from protection, verify
that it is set to full, and then add it back to protection.   I have not tested this yet.
This is the article I read:

  • RMAN backup for two databases with similar DBID

We have two databases with SID 'uiivc' and 'uiivc1' running from one of the HP Unix 11.11 PA-RISC server. I did configured RMAN backup for both databases. But it is found that both databases have same DBID [connected to target database: UIIVC (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC & connected to target database: UIIVC1 (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC1] and backup configured via crontab seen running fine with full backup at weekend and archivelog backup at daily for both databases. Now my query is that will it create any issues at time of restoration since both databases have similar DBID? Does RMAN uses DBID to distinguish databases?
    Kindly help to clarifiy

    Hi Tycho,
I configured RMAN to store controlfile backups in different folders on each database.

    UIIVC1 database:

    Hi,
In the snip provided above does the log outline what the
    Exception Message is equal to?
Example of what you may see in the stack  [

  • What are the limitations of AMS5 only allowing one-way broadcast for the video capture support?

I am interested in a tool that can access a clients webcam and begin recording from their device. When the time is up, it should store that recorded video to a server. Then, of course, the files can be accessed. Streaming is of less significance than simply capturing and accessing video from a client
Can I do this with only Adobe Media Server Standard Edition?
Bearing in mind, I may need to be capturing video from multiple clients at one time. Is this limited by the fact that Standard only allows "one-way broadcasts?"
    Thanks,
    Carl

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried using DVCPRO HD in the past, but the picture quality of the captured screen footage turns out blurry. The only codecs I've found that provide a perfectly clear image are H264, Animation and Uncompressed 8-bit. The problem with the latter two is that video files lasting only a few seconds measure in the 100s of MBs. Working with files that large would slow my editing and rendering down to a non-workable length.
I just don't understand why I can't edit H264 video if my sequence codec is set to H264. The 'Codec error' I get is baffling.

  • Backups for large databases

I am wondering how people do restores of very large DB's. Ours is not that large yet bit will grow to the point where exports and imports are not feasible. The data only changes periodically and as it is a web application, cold backups are not really an option. We don't run in archived log mode because of the static nature of the data. Any suggestions?

put the read only tables in a read only tablespace and slowly changing tables to another tablespace. the most frequent ones in another tablespace.
take transportable tablespace export of the frequently changing tablespace daily and slowly changing 2-3 times a week (depending on your site specifics). this involves nothing but a metadata export of the datadictionary info of the tablespaces exported and an OS level copy of the datafiles of those tablespaces.
this is the best way for you to backup/recover. check out oracle documentation or this website for transportable tablespaces.
I guess it comes to a point where you have to make a tradeoff between performance and recoverability. In my opinion always take recoverability over performance.
If the periodic change of data is nothing but a bulk data load then after the dataload take a backup of a database. having multiple recovery scenarios is the best way for recovery.

  • Speeding up full backup of Replicate database ASE 15.5

    Greetings all
I need to speed up replicate database backup.
    ASE version 15.5

    RS version
    Replication Server/15.7.1/EBF 21656 SP110 rs1571sp110/RS6000/AIX 5.3/1/OPT64/Wed Sep 11 12:46:38 2013
Primary database is 1.9 TB about 85% occupied
Replicate database is same size but used about 32%  (mostly dbo tables are replicated)
As noted above backup sever is 32 bit on AIX.
    SIMILARITIES
Both servers use SAN with locally mounted folder for backup files/stripes.
Databases are on  'raw' devices for data and log
Both backup servers have the similar RUN files with following
    -N25 \
    -C20 \
    -M/sybase/15/ASE-15_0/bin/sybmultbuf \
    -m2000 \
Number of stripes are 20 for both primary and replicate databases.
    DIFFERENCES
Replicate has less memory and less number of engines.
Devices on primary are mostly 32 GB and those on replicate are mostly 128 GB
    OBSERVATIONS
Full Back up times on primary consistently about 1 hour.
Full Back up times on replicate are consistently double that (120 to 130 minutes).
Full Backup with suspended  replication or with minimal activity does not reduce the run times much.
What do I need to capture to pinpoint cause of the slow backup on replicate side ?
    Thanks in advance
    Avinash

    Mark
    Thanks for the inputs.
We use compression level 2 on both primary and replicate.
This was tried out before upgrade to 15.5 and seems good enough.
BTW on a different server I also tried new compression levels 100 and 101.
for database of same size and did not get substantial reduction in run times.
Stripe sizes increased from 23 GB to 30-33 GB.
As far as I have noted Replicate side is not starved for CPU.
sp_sysmon outputs during the backup period do not show high CPU usage.
Wll it be accurate to to say that like a huge report query,  backup activity also churns the caches ?
(i.e. each allocated/used page if not found in the cache is brought in cache by a physical read )

    Hi bestrongself,
Before you use a SQL Server Agent job to back up all database, I recommend you run the backup statement in query windows directly, and check if it can run well. I do a test by using the following statement,
    DECLARE @name VARCHAR(50) -- database name
DECLARE @path VARCHAR(256) -- path for backup files
    DECLARE @fileName VARCHAR(256) -- filename for backup
DECLARE @fileDate VARCHAR(20) -- used for file name
    -- specify database backup directory
    SET @path = 'C:\Backup\'
    -- specify filename format
    SELECT @fileDate = CONVERT(VARCHAR(20),GETDATE(),112)
    DECLARE db_cursor CURSOR FOR
    SELECT name
    FROM master.dbo.sysdatabases
WHERE name NOT IN ('master','model','msdb','tempdb') -- exclude these databases
    OPEN db_cursor
FETCH NEXT FROM db_cursor INTO @name
    WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
    BEGIN
    SET @fileName = @path + @name + '_' + @fileDate + '.BAK'
    BACKUP DATABASE @name TO DISK = @fileName
FETCH NEXT FROM db_cursor INTO @name
    END
    CLOSE db_cursor
    DEALLOCATE db_cursor
the script allow you to backup each database within your instance of SQL Server.
Your account  need to have read and right permission to the path file.
If the above script can run well directly, then you can create a job and put your backup statement inside of it. There is a similar detail about how to create a simple backup job in SQL Server. You can review it.

  • Recover full backup into another database

    Hello,
I have a particular need that does not seems to be done so often and I just cannot get it.
So here is the situation : I have a backup of a full database. That means that I have the init parameter file, the autobackuped controlfile (+pfile) and the autobackuped backupset.
The source database is release 10.2.0.5.0, RAC instance.
On another server, I have a simple instance, same release and I would like to recover the full backup in the second database.
I have already done that once before but I had both pfile and controlfile backuped manually and the two instances were simple ones.
Here I have tried the same way : shutdown my target database, changing my pfile backup parameters to match the target database. Startup the target database in nomount mode using the pfile. Create spfile from pfile. Then restore controlfile from the backuped controlfile with rman.
But here this step is a problem.
My question is simple : what is the best way / good practices to get this working?
Thanks in advance for your help. Ask if you need any further informations.

  • Restoring Full backup for Duplication

    Hello,
I am duplicating my production database to Test environment. We have FULL sunday backup and daily increamental. I am restoring from Tape backup till Monday. Production DB size is 350 GB
Usually it takes more than 2 days. Is there any way to improve performance of Restoration?
    Regards,
    Sandeep

    I am checking the bug/notes.
    For backup I am using - allocate channel t1 type sbt PARMS="BLKSIZE=1048576" maxpiecesize 32G maxopenfiles 64;
    and for Restore script -
    allocate auxiliary channel t1 type 'sbt_tape' send 'NB_ORA_POLICY=ora_zus26d-0701_uh_00_sesz_cl02,NB_ORA_CLIENT=zus26d-0701-bkp.csintra.net,NB_ORA_SERV=bkphg7en1.csintra.net,NB_ORA_SCHED=ora_zus26d-0701_uh_00_sesz_cl02_user';
    allocate auxiliary channel t2 type 'sbt_tape' send 'NB_ORA_POLICY=ora_zus26d-0701_uh_00_sesz_cl02,NB_ORA_CLIENT=zus26d-0701-bkp.csintra.net,NB_ORA_SERV=bkphg7en1.csintra.net,NB_ORA_SCHED=ora_zus26d-0701_uh_00_sesz_cl02_user';
    Can this affect restore performance?

I have been having trouble downloading apps that are on the the store but not iPad exclusive or iPhone exclusive. So apps available on both devices are not available to me

    Are you sure?
An App that appears in the iPad Store, for example, may be useable on the iPhone.  If it is, there would be a small "+" sign in the upper left of the price (or free) indicator.

  • 11gR1 backup for 11gR2 database clone.

    Hi all,
Our OS is 64 bit RHEL 5.7. On this we have EBS R12.1.3. with db version 11.1. Recently I installed EBS 12.1.3 (actually installed 12.1.1 and upgraded to 12.1.3) on a VM and upgraded its 11.1.0.7 db to 11.2.0.3. Now as I want to test the CPU patches on this instance I decided to clone the production instance here. Since this is a higher version oracle home (11.2.0), I will have to do some new steps here but am not sure what they are. I have restored the controlfile, restored and recovered the database and opened the database with STARTUP UPGRADE command. What steps should I perform next?
    Regards,
    Vinod

I believe this is what you need to do:
    - Clone your application tier node only
Cloning Oracle Applications Release 12 with Rapid Clone [ID 406982.1]
Rapid Clone Documentation Resources For Release 11i and 12 [ID 799735.1]
    - Re-apply the application patches you applied for 11.2.0.3 upgrade using "nodatabaseportion"
Interoperability Notes EBS 12.0 and 12.1 with Database 11gR2 [ID 1058763.1]
AD Command Line Options for Release R12 [ID 1078973.1]
    - Apply CPU patches
Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 11i and 12 Critical Patch Update Knowledge Document (April 2013) [ID 1530756.1]

  • Hot Backup for oracle database?

    Dear all,
I want to change Cold Backup to Hot Backup. Does anyone how to do Hot Backup and has some simple document I can follow? If the database is running in ARCHIVELOG mode, is the size grow very fast or other effect will overcome?
    Please advice,
    Amy

I want to change Cold Backup to Hot Backup. Does
anyone how to do Hot Backup and has some simple
document I can follow?online/hot backup don’t need to shutdown the database we can put the database in backup mode and then start taking backup even though users database activity read/write data going on. This strategy useful if ours database goes for 24x7.
For online/hot backup the database should be in archive mode.
I hope you know how to turn on archive. Before turning on check the archive on or not.
    SQL> archive log list
    Database log mode              Archive Mode
    Automatic archival             Enabled
    Archive destination            USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST
    Oldest online log sequence     1
Next log sequence to archive   2
    Current log sequence           2
SQL> you may also check it by connecting to database as sys
    SQL> select log_mode from v$database;
    LOG_MODE
    ARCHIVELOG
SQL> if yours database is not in archive mode then first enable archive, please before turning on the archive take cold backup.
    SQL>shutdown immediate
    SQL>startup mount
    SQL>alter database archivelog
    SQL>alter database open;
    SQL> archive log list
Now you are able to take hot/online backup ,its upto you you use user managed backup and recovery or use RMAN oracle own shipped free tool for backup and recovery ,however my recommendation would goes for RMAN.
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/A97630_01/server.920/a96572/toc.htm
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/rman_overview.htm
ARCHIVELOG mode, is the size grow very fast or other
effect will overcome? However, the growing size pace either fast or slow everyday can be impractical it alls depends on activity of yours database operation. You will have to observe it yourself by turning on archive log its vary database to database activity.
