Dragging a clip made with In/Out points from viewer

I'm using Tom Wolsky's book FCE 3.5 to learn FCE 4.
I'm hoping it will at least get me through some of the minutiae.
I'm on page 44 and 45 "Slicing your clips" and under "Slice 1" #9 it says I should drag the marked clip from the viewer and drop it in my newly created bin marked "Clips".
When I drag whats in the viewer with my new In/Out points into my browser, I'm dragging the entire "Temple" clip into my browser that has the marked In/Out points on it, not just the clip made with the In/Out points.......my understanding is that I'm supposed to be dragging the clip I just made, not the entire Temple scene with the In/Out points simply marked......
Naturally, any help or scathing insight would be great!

I guess I wasn't supposed to be dragging the clip itself, but the master clip >with In/Out points on it..........
but the master clip >with *(_new in/out points_ and been made to a Modify>Make Master Clip)* In/Out points on it.
The new ones are now independant.

  • How to remove all in and out points from extendscript code?

    Hi,
I am creating a sequence from a clip from extendscript code to automateToSequence function.
But if there are some in and out points in the clip only the select clip part is converted as a sequence, what is the solution to remove all those in and out points from extendscript code, or to get the full clip to sequence even there are some in and out points.
    I am using the function like this; qe.project.getItemAt(i).automateToSequence(seq,0,0,1,1);
    Please suggest,
    Thanks and Regards,
    Anoop NR

Double click the pre-comp or nested comp, open comp settings from the menu or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmnd + k.
Note, changing the length of the comp will not extent the length of footage or layers inside the comp. You have to do that manually and it depends on your footage type.

  • Sequence plays right on canvas but exports clips at wrong in/out points!

    This is driving me nuts.
I've made a 90 second sequence the way I always have: previewing the clip in the viewer, setting in/out points, then dragging it down to the time line. It plays perfectly when I watch it from the time line/canvas but when I export to QT the clips are all wrong (sometimes a whole second off)! The cuts all happen in the right places in regards to matching the music, but the clips inside the cuts have become skewed one way or another.
    I hope that made sense.
I'm working with files from a 7D, it's my first time messing with HDSLR stuff.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I couldn't figure out MPEG Steamclip (it was a little late haha), so I imported into iMovie as a HDV 720p project and then pulled the converted files from inside the project. It came into FCE fine with no rendering needed so I figured it was fine until I watched the sequence after it was exported to QT.
Sequence is good in FCE "canvas" but all wrong in the exported QT movie. I don't understand how it would get screwed up between the perfect preview and the final output.
Another note... the thumbnails in the time line are wrong in regards to the canvas. What the canvas shows as the first frame of a clip is not the first frame on the time line clips thumbnail. The thumbnail is the actual first frame that is exported to the final QT file though. I'm bewildered.

  • Clips shift in and out points after render (Dissolves messed up too) Urgent

Hello all, I have a frustrating and urgent problem.
I'm working with DV NTSC footage at 23.98 fps, shot 24pA and captured with the advanced pulldown removal from a dvx100.
The problem arises when I am rendering my footage from a color correction, etc, the in and out points of my shots change and the shot seems to shift. The cut points don't change, but the shot shifts position within them, almost as if rendering has caused final cut to use the slip tool on these and move them ever so slightly forward or backward.
This problem is also effecting my dissolves, causing them to start to dissolve then suddenly jerk into another part of the clip and then back to the shot that it is transitioning to.
I have tried outputting a QT movie of my timeline (in order to color correct that instead and avoid a render), but as you may have guessed, this only results in a QT movie with all of the above problems.
It is very similar, if not the same, as the problem described here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8096178&#8096178
I'm under a deadline and any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks all,
    Nathan

I've had that happen before. Crazy as it sounds, I "solved" it by laying a large video file over the top of the timeline (covering everything) then brought the opacity down to 0%. Go figure but it worked; everything straightened out and rendered fine.
Ghost in the machine for sure.

  • Serial Composition with In/Out points

I`ve asked that question a while back in the prerelease forum but did not made any progress since then so one more try.
I would like to play a series of videos. For those videos i want to specify individual in and out points.
So the first video should start at 0.30 and have a duration of 40 sec for example.
So basically i want to create a playlist of media elements with in points and out points. The whole thing should look like it`s one video.
So there should be one seek bar that scrubs over all video elements and gives me the correct video...
Is this a supported scenario? If not will it be supported? If it`s already supported any help in getting me started would be welcome :-)
    Thanks
    Benjamin

This is on our feature roadmap as subclip support, slated for inclusion in the Nov/Dec/Jan time frame.

  • Fixing AV clips that have uneven out points

For some reason, After Effects CS5 exported Premiere Pro projects often have audio clips that are a few frames longer than its associated video track.
Is there a way just to adjust the audio track's out point without unlinking them first?  I've been using the razor blade to cut it even, delete the extra bit, then drag out of the outpoint again. Kind of clumsy, but it works.

Depending on the Export settings (both from AE, and PrPro), the block sizes on some Audio formats will differ very slightly, than the accompanying Video file. The differences are usually very slight, but can cause problems, similar to what you are encountering.
What are the Audio and Video formats and their settings?
Not saying that this is your cause, but it happens fairly often, and will usually show up in Encore.
    Good luck,

  • Problems with in/out points when submitting jobs via Terminal/command-line

I've writting a GUI based script which allows a user to select a source Quicktime file, and will encode that file to multiple formats, and trims each destination based on specific timecode in/out points. However, I'm having problems getting the Compressor command-line interface to honor the in/out timecodes that I've explicitly set for multiple jobs within a single commandline.
In other words, if I want to encode a source Quicktime between 01:00:00:00 and 01:00:29:23 with just ONE setting/destination, then the following commandline works:
    /Applications/Final\ Cut\ Studio/Compressor.app/Contents/MacOS/Compressor -clustername MHM -batchname CLI_BATCH -jobpath /Volumes/mel/temp/20120329/TEST_SRC.mov  -settingpath /Volumes/common/settings/compressor/M9_Slave/_Local_/OTWC.setting -destinationpath /Volumes/mel/temp/20120329/TEST1234_Testing30_OTWC.mov -in 01000000 -out 01002923
But if I try to append multiple settings/destinations to the commandline, Compressor will only honor the -in/-out arguments which appear in the LAST -jobpath instance in the commandline.
For example, the following commandline will properly encode the file to multiple destination files, using the appropriate .settings file, but it ignores the -in/-out points that were set for any -jobpath instance that appears before the last -jobpath instance (in other words, every file is output using 00:59:57:00/01:00:30:01 as the in/out points, instead of having the "*_OTWC.mov" file output using 01:00:00:00 as the in point)
    /Applications/Final\ Cut\ Studio/Compressor.app/Contents/MacOS/Compressor -clustername MHM -batchname CLI_BATCH -jobpath /Volumes/mel/temp/20120329/TEST_SRC.mov  -settingpath /Volumes/common/settings/compressor/M9_Slave/_Local_/OTWC.setting -destinationpath /Volumes/mel/temp/20120329/TEST1234_Testing30_OTWC.mov -in 01000000 -out 01002923 -jobpath /Volumes/mel/temp/20120329/TEST_SRC.mov -settingpath /Volumes/common/settings/compressor/M9_Slave/_Local_/HNN-HD.setting -destinationpath /Volumes/mel/temp/20120329/TEST1234_Testing30_HNN-HD.mov -in 00595700 -out 01003001
It's wierd that everything else about this command-line syntax works as expected (and as explicitly stated in the Compressor -help output, which says "when submitting individual source files. (The) Following parameters are repeated to enter multiple job targets in a batch"), except for the -in/-out points.
I've even tried quoting the -in/-out arguments using colons (e.g., -in "01:00:00;00") , but this doesnt appear to change the behavior.
Is this a bug, or am I missing something here?

  • Compressor Losing IN/Out Points from FCP

I recently loaded my fcp studio to a new (to me) 2x3ghz quad core intel xeon mac pro with OS 10.6.7. Running FCP 7.0.3 and Compressor 3.5.3
When I export a sequence from FCP to Compressor using the "file;send to;compressor", Compressor sees the whole sequence, ignoring the In and Out points I have set. I can't seem to figure this out. I have taken to setting in/outs and exporting a reference QT using "file; export; QT movie", then importing the file into compressor. An extra step that is really slowing me down.
    Any suggestions?

Adding a sequence to the render queue is sort of like duplicaitng it. Each time you put a sequence into the render queue, it will stay in that state (same edit, ins & outs) regardless of what you do to the original. I use this behavios to batch export several selects of the same sequence - changing the in and out and dragging a new instance to the export queue.
The thing about the export queue is that it will lose its contents when you quit FCP. If you want to be able to mark the same portion of a sequence over again, you might try putting a marker with a duration or pair of markers and use Mark to Markers - (^A) to set the same in and out each time.
    hope this helps -

  • How to retrieve a clip's in and out point?

I have cut a clip appart and now I need to know at which frame of the clip the new clip fragment starts.
Can someone please enlighten me on where to find this piece of information?

Strange, if I do this at my machine, nothing happens...
What action would this shortcut perform?
I have created another, small, (hypothetical) case here:
As you can see I have added the same video clip to the timeline twice:
So in the sequence both start at frame 00:00:00:00.
I trimmed both clips in the sequence. (BTW: What would the correct terminology for clips being added to the sequence be? Clips themselves can only reside in the Project window. Sequences may only contain links to those clips... So, just to be able to distinguish both, I'll call these links in a sequence 'clip links' here.) ...Thus, what I actually did was to trim both clip links in the sequence.
As you can see from the thumbnails in the image, I trimmed each of the clip links at different clip positions.
Although both clip links are of same length, I trimmed the clip link in track Video 1 to start at 00:00:00:00 while the clip link in track Video 2 has been trimmed to start at 00:00:15:07.
Correspondingly, the clip link in track Video 1 ends at clip frame 00:00:03:05 while the clip link in track Video 2 ends at clip frame 00:00:18:13.
These are the values I want to retrieve. After trimming I need to know exactly what is the first frame of a clip link that's being displayed.
So I need to acquire the 00:00:00:00 - 00:00:03:05 for that clip link in track Video 1 and the 00:00:15:07 - 00:00:18:13 for the clip link in track Video 2.

  • Can clips made with different recording modes (SP/LP) be put in same movie?

My cousin recorded the family reunion in LP mode while I had my digital camcorder set to SP. I'm using Premiere Elements 4 to make a DVD using everybody's stills and the two digital camcorders' movie clips. Does it matter about the different recording modes? Can I put clips of both speeds in the same authored movie? If not, I guess I could make two movies and burn both files to the same DVD disk. Can they have the same menu? Or how do I make it easy for viewers to play both movies on their TV (not on a computer)? Thanks for your help and for any suggestions.

If you're talking about a miniDV camcorder that's recorded in both LP and SP -- it won't make any difference at all. Digital data is digital data, as far as Premiere Elements is concerned.

  • Accessing purchases made with 1 Apple ID from multiple Apple IDs

I have been sharing 1 Apple ID to make all purchases and homeshare for the household.  As I now begin to add new IOS devices (IPAD, Iphones, etc.) and the kids want their own IDs for purchases and icloud syncs, is it possible to access music and app purchases made under the original id with the new id(s) so tey dont lose any of their existing stuff?  Put another way, can multiple ids access purchases made under one master id?
    Thanks

I happened to stop at the Apple store yesterday for a separate issue and had a discussion about iCloud. Seems like this is how iCloud works (also, there's another thread on this forum that explains it well).
Each member of the family can have their own iCloud ID, which will be used for Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Apps, Bookmarks, Media, Photos, etc. and having this content synced automatically with a Mac (computer). The iCloud IDs work in tandem with the associated Apple ID — so while you cannot have multiple Apple IDs, you can certainly have multiple iCloud IDs tagged with a certain Apple ID.
While all this makes sense from the iOS device standpoint, I'm unclear on how things will sync with a Mac computer, especially if the family uses a single iMac with multiple login IDs for various members. For instance, I currently have an iMac and iTunes content resides in my Public folder, which my wife can still access when she logs in with her login ID. I'm guessing that I'll be able to set up her iCloud ID using her login, set up my iCloud ID using my login, while both our iMac logins will retain the same Apple ID. This would take care of syncing Photos, Contacts, Calendars, etc.
Another (not sure if unique) problem I face is our Address Book — right now, we have one GIANT address book with different groups set up. Certain groups sync to her iPhone, while others to mine. Some contacts are common between both of us. I'm hoping that if she/I updates a common contact, then the change will be reflected in both our groups of contacts. I hope this makes sense — for instance, I update a contact named Joe, and he's on my group of contacts in my iPhone. Hope iCloud updates the master contact card for Joe on the iMac, which would then automatically trigger the update on my wife's group of contacts—that Joe also belongs to— leading to an update on her iOS device as well.
    Apologies for the lengthy response..

  • Help with partial image loss from Viewer to Canvas

Hi--I'm brand new to FCP and would really appreciate any help with my problem. I'm creating 2 second video clips composed of four still images (15 frames...or 500ms each) laid back to back, then rendered. Very simple, I know. The individual images are tiff files that look great in the FCP Viewer. But in the Canvas, part of the image is missing. Specifically, in the center of each image there should be a + sign, about 1cm square. This + should remain constant thoughout the short movie, while the items around it vary (from image to image). (This is a psychology experiment, and the center + is a fixation cross.) The problem is that in the Viewer the + sign is intact, but in the Canvas (and the resulting rendered video), only the vertical bar of the + is present! This is true for every individual tiff, and for the resulting movie. The items around the fixation cross are fine. My question is WHY on earth does the central horizontal bar get "lost" between the Viewer and the Canvas? I've read the manuals, but obviously I've got something set wrong. Also, there is a considerable overall reduction in quality between the viewer and canvas, even though I'm trying my best to maximize video quality. Everything looks a bit blurry. Truly, all ideas are welcome. Sorry if it's obvious. Thanks.

steve, i'm viewing on my 23" cinema screen. i read up on quality and know that this is a no-no; that i should only judge quality when viewing on an ntsc monitor or good tv. the problem is that i'll ultimately be displaying these videos on my Dell LCD, so i've got to maximize what i've got. thanks to the discussion boards i have a short list of things to try now. thanks!

  • Clip and subclips with audio out of sync

I have a one-hour or so clip that I broke up into about 20 subclips.
Unfortunately, the audio is out of sync throughout the hour, but the degree of out-of-syncness varies throughout the hour, so some of the clips are 10 frames out of sync, some 3 frames, etc.
I went through the clips, setting in and out points, and now I realize that I have to put them in sync individually.
I can sync them by placing them in the timeline and breaking the a/v link, or locking the audio and dragging the video around, but then I am left with a clip in the timeline. What I really want to do is sync them now, before I assemble the clips in the timeline (with lots of other media interspersed; they won't be continguous), so they are waiting for me in the browser, all synced and ready to go.
    How do I do this?

Sounds like the video was shot with 12 bit audio. Please make certain your camera /camcorder is set properly to 16 bit audio (not 12 bit).

  • Is there any way to lock your in and out points on a clip?

Everytime I click outside the clip, my in and out points disappear and I have to reset them.  Any ideas?

No way of locking them in, but once you have your in and outs set, if you hit F it will favorite that area. Then whenever you want to go back to that clip just click the favorite icon on the clip and your in and outs will be set around the favorite section.

  • Selecting and Dragging multiple clips - CS6 Sniper mode

With the introduction of ability to select Edit Points, now it's inconvenient to drag multiple selected clips or add clips to selection because in some cases - depending on timeline zoom state and/or clip duration. The edit points are altered instead of the clips, that behaviour drives me nuts. It leads to a necessity to do one of the following actions before selecting and/or dragging multiple clips with comfort:
sniper mode - put the cursor over a place in the selection where the cursor will not indicate Edit Point trimming mode.
to avoid loosing selection when using sniper mode - Group the clips after adding every clip to selection and/or after a dragging operation
dynamically change zoom state so that you will not have to use sniper mode
use copy/cut/paste - may involve a necessity to do additional pre-pasting steps
IMHO, this behaviour should be rethinked.
How fast it was in CS5.5 and older versions:
Please, Premiere Pro Programming Team, especially Tim Gogolin, Steve Hoeg, Peter Lee, Gerry Miller, James Mork, Vivek Neelamegam, Axel Schildan, Jerry Scoggins, Sven Skwirblies, Tod Snook, Jesse Zibble, rethink the behaviour of selecting and dragging clips. Start giving links to beta-versions to other editors too, not only to editors like Philip Bloom.
Selecting edit points is sometimes helpful and sometimes distracting.
To get the best of two worlds (CS6 edit points vs. CS5.5 and older) - a switch could be added to Keyboard Shortcuts list, like the "hidden" Add Clip Marker shortcut.
Let's name it "Application > Sequence > Select Edit Points".
When Shift- or Shift+Alt- key is pressed and some Clip is selected, clicking on an edit point of another clip should add a clip to selection in the same way as previous versions of Premiere Pro did:
To drag clips in legacy sniper-free mode only a switch can help. Let's name it "Application > Sequence > Select Edit Points when Multiple Clips are Selected".
To add comfort to the editing process - selecting/dragging multiple clips - additional switches cannot be avoided. Additionally you may add an option to the Preferences > Trim:
Allow Selection tool to choose Roll and Ripple trims without modifier key
Allow Selection tool to select Edit Points while multiple Clips are selected

With all due respect Kevin, nobody at Adobe has the right to change a program SO drastically.  I am also a mouse person, and am MUCH faster using the mouse, vs the keyboard.
When people have invested YEARS into a program like Adobe, they get used to things, how things work, the feel of a program.  I really don't see how you all can just change it on a whim.  IF you are going to do this, BOTH methods should still work.  You cannot just stop the way people are used to editing.  You can't just decide to change a program so drastically, that it doesn't feel like a program we have grown to love over many long years.  If Adobe on a whole is changing things, just because a few people in your company voice opinions like I've quoted below, it's not the way to go.  Adobe should be really putting feelers out there, and seeing how people are really using the program.  Things should be getting easier, more powerful, sure that's natural, but you can't just decide to remove things that mouse users do every day. :-(
Upgrading a program, and changing it to this degree, are two different things in my book.  I have not yet upgraded, but it is very scary - the things I'm seeing.  For one, way way too many bugs.  The amount of bugs on so many boards being reported are just beyond comprehension.
And a final note, I for one, am very glad Steven is posting these videos ( I'd like to hear him go through steps though - just watching the video with no audio of what he is doing is not so great, however after watching some of his posts, he's knows what he's doing, and has a good head to think with )
I mostly read posts, but I thought I would voice my opinion, if none of us speak up, nothing will get changed.  I'm really hoping that Adobe implements some change in the next revision .5 or whatever it will be called.  Reading posts like this one are really depressing.  Did you watch Steven's video on a simple task as moving multiple clips around on a timeline ?  Doing this with a mouse just isn't going to work for many, removing simple tasks by way of using a mouse would stop me from upgrading.
Please address this in upcoming updates.
    Dave.
